Red hot Radhika Apte sizzles in Sujay Ghosh’s thriller ‘Ahalya’

RadhikaBollywood director, Sujoy Ghosh, whose movie ‘Kahaani’ left the industry spellbound, is back with another enthralling 14-minutes-short film, ‘Ahalya’ starring Radhika Apte and veteran Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee.

The movie is set in contemporary time in Kolkata and will reinterpret a legendary episode from the great Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana where the fate of an apsara, a maharishi and god of rain – Indra is sealed by a curse. As the past tells about the director’s caliber, the story revolves around the female character and creates a strong sense of enigma.

Talking about his film, director, Sujoy said, “The entire experience of making ‘Ahalya’ was very challenging yet interesting. For me, both Ramayan and Mahabharat are the greatest books ever and the unending wealth of stories in these two books is undisputed. The story of ‘ Ahalya’ always remained with me because in my younger days I found it very funny what happened with Indra. The curse of Goutam Sadhu has always stayed in my mind but in an amusing way.”

The movie has been released by Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short Films, a portal focused on giving budding film makers a platform to showcase their short films with large ideas, and is available on YouTube channel.

Never been treated as girl in cliched sense, says Parineeti Chopra

Bangistan doesn’t have to make Rs. 100 crores to be hit: Riteish Deshmukh

RiteshThe standard measure of a hit film in Bollywood has been raised from Rs. 100 crores to Rs. 300 crores, but Bangistan actor Riteish Deshmukh said that they’re not expecting the film to even touch the lower mark.

When asked about this box office obsession, Riteish said: “When you sign a film, you are aware what range the film can touch. If you do Housefull and Grand Masti and they collect Rs. 100 crores, you can expect the next one to do similar business. But when we do Bangistan, we’re not expecting the film to touch Rs. 100 crores because for this film to be successful, it doesn’t need to reach that figure. Every film has a budget and a certain target audience in mind and the Rs. 100-crore mark is not necessary for every film to be successful.”

The film, directed by debutant Karan Anshuman, also stars Pulkit Samrat and Jacqueline Fernandez and is releasing on July 31.

Birthday gift to Yakub: Hang till death

Yakub-Memon (2)It’s a coincidence that Memon who was born on 30th July 1962 will be executed on his birthday.

The Supreme Court dismissed 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon’s curative petition against death sentence. Memon will be hanged on July 30 on the occasion of his 53rd birthday at 7 am in Nagpur Central Jail, where he is currently lodged. It’s a coincidence that Memon who was born on 30th July 1962 will be executed on his birthday. The state government has not revealed how it is planning to go ahead with Yakub’s execution.

Ujjawal Nikam, Special Public Prosecutor in 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case, has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the curative petition filed by Yakub Memon.

Nikam said the apex court has rightly rejected the curative petition and that the verdict will have far reaching consequences.

“Now there is no legal impediment for execution of the sentence,” Nikam said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss Yakub Memon’s curative petition against death sentence, saying the verdict clearly shows that terror has no place in our society.

Saina-NC (2)“I think it’s absolutely imperative to have people like Yakub Memon hung to death because 1993 blast victims know the kind of anxiety they have had to deal with. Law does take its time, but it’s imperative to send out a message that terror has no place in our society,” BJP leader Shaina NC said.

Special TADA Court Judge PD Kode, who conducted the trial in the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case hailed the Supreme Court verdict which sends prime accused Yakub Memon to the gallows.

Retired Special Judge Kode, who sentenced Memon and 10 others to death in the case, termed the Supreme Court’s rejection of Memon’s curative plea as “a solace after 22 years and a victory for those who believe in the rule of the law”.

“The Supreme Court judgement shows that indulging in criminal activities is not a profitable business. As far as India is concerned, we don’t tolerate the people who play with the valuable fundamental rights of the citizens enshrined in the Constitution,” Kode said.

Yakub was sentenced to death by a designated TADA court in 2007, after it found him guilty of playing a key role in the criminal conspiracy. The CBI alleged that the blasts were planned by Dawood Ibrahim, Tiger Memon and others.

In March 2013, the apex court had rejected Memon’s appeal against conviction by TADA court. In May 2014, then President rejected Memon’s mercy petition and in April 2015, the Supreme Court rejected Memon’s review petition against conviction and sentence.

According to investigating agency, Tiger Memon got Yakub involved in planning and plotting the serial blasts that killed at least 257 people and injured about 700 on March 12, 1993.

There should not be political vendetta, but fact should come out

Teesta Setalvad recorded her statement before the CBI in connection with a case against her firm for allegedly receiving around $2.9 lakh in foreign donations in violation of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). She had been asked by a local court to appear before the central agency. It’s an interesting development. Government need to create some laws pertaining to financial disclosure of Non-government organizations. India has several organisations of these kinds and hardly anybody knows how they are financed and how they use money. In 2013, 12 residents of the Gulbarg Society who were the victim of Gujarat riots, accused Setalvad of collecting donations in the name of riot victims but failing to use them for their benefit and sent a legal notice to her. They claimed that she had collected huge donations from national and international organisations in the name of providing financial assistance for reconstruction of houses or developing the society into a museum but it was not passed to the members of the society. They also sought to ban her organisation “Citizens for Justice and Peace” and prevent them from entering the society to organise programmes. The Ahmedabad Crime Branch is conducting an inquiry into the matter.

On 13 March 2013, the official representatives including the secretary and chairman of the Gulbarg Cooperative Housing Society in a letter to the joint commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Ahmedabad, informed him that the letter-head of the society had been misused by some residents and the claims being made by them were patently false since nothing had been parted from them. A similar letter was also released to the media, in a press release CJP and Sabrang clarified that CJP never sought nor received any money for the museum. Sabrang Trust had raised an amount of Rs. 4,60,285 nationally and internationally from donors for the purpose of the museum and since the plan has been abandoned due to spiraling real estate prices, the matter is between the trust and the donors which they will address when final decision is taken. All other funds, nationally and internationally raised, have been funds legitimately collected for activities that they publicly engage in. Their accounts are audited and submitted to the relevant authorities. Subsequent to the letter written by the Gulbarg Society members to the police, the police sent them a letter asking for the status quo to be maintained while investigations were in progress. Later, the Crime Branch claimed that the complaint did not have any substance and instead filed an FIR against Setalvad.

After a First Information Report was filed by the Ahmedabad police on 4 January 2014, Teesta Setalvad and Javed Anand were granted interim bail. According to the judge, similar relief has been provided in the past when false allegations were raised. The bail application stated that “The FIR is a malafide action of the Crime Branch, Ahmedabad, to intimidate a human rights defender. This is the fifth time that a false criminal case has been lodged since 2004 against her as her organization’s consistent legal support to the victims of 2002 riots. Gulbarga cooperative housing society had been totally burnt down by politically motivated anti-social elements and 68 people had lost their lives in the massacre.” It also said that the accusation was brought by “powerful forces in Gujarat who wish(ed) to stymie the appeal in the Zakia Jafri case.

On finding that the Crime Branch, Ahmedabad instead of acting on his complaint had filed an FIR against Setalvad and others, the Secretary of the Gulbarg Housing Society, Firoz Gulzar Pathan moved the court complaining against Gujarat police’s biased approach. The court sought a report from the Crime Branch. The Police responded by claiming that the complaint did not have any substance. This was countered by the complainant’s advocate who maintained that the Crime Branch had not even bothered to question the complainant before shelving the complaint. This led the magisterial court on 15 February 2014 to direct the city crime branch to lodge an FIR and start investigation against former residents of Gulbarg Society who had filed the complaint against Setalvad last year. On 28 November 2014, local court rejected pleas filed by activist Teesta Setalvad, her husband Javed Anand and their two NGOs seeking to de-freeze their bank accounts attached earlier by police in connection with the embezzlement case. On 12 February 2015, Gujarat High Court rejected Setalvad’s anticipatory bail plea regarding the case. However she was given an interim protection by the Supreme Court of India and on 19 March 2015, a two-judge bench of the Court referred the issue involved in her case to a large three-judge bench.
The CBI, which registered a case on July 8 against Sabrang Communication and Publishing Pvt Limited, has alleged that SCPPL was not registered under FCRA for collecting money from abroad and the amount of nearly Rs. 1.8 crore ($2.9 lakh) was, therefore, received in violation of the Act as the organisation needed to seek prior approval of the Union Home Ministry.

Setalvad had helped Ms. Zakia Jafri to file a complaint against then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and 61 others for their alleged involvement in the post-Godhra riots. But an Ahmedabad court recently accepted the Special Investigation closure reports; giving a clean chit to Mr. Modi and others. The Gulbarg Society victims have accused Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand of collecting foreign funds for riot victims but not using them. Twelve Gulbarg victims served notice on her and lodged a complaint with the police commissioner who asked the Crime Branch to inquire into it. The residents alleged that she had sought and collected huge donations from national and international bodies under the pretext of providing financial assistance for reconstruction of houses or developing the Gulbarg society into a museum.

Following investigations, the Crime Branch has registered an FIR against Teesta and her husband Javed Anand.

The CBI, which is probing the firm’s accounts from 2004 to 2014, claimed to have recovered documents showing that the money received from the Ford Foundation had not been cleared by the Home Ministry. Setalvad, during the July 14 searches by CBI, had termed the action by the probe agency as a” shameful political vendetta”.

DHANGAR-PROTESTIn a novel protest outside Vidhan Bhawan, opposition legislators wore robes and headgear of dhangar (shepherd) community as part of their protest to remind the BJP-led government to fulfill their promise to ensure quota for the community.

The former deputy CM accompanied by legislators from NCP reached the Vidhan Bhawan dressed in a typical dhangar attire.

Pawar reminded BJP of its pre-election promise to include the dhangar community in the list of tribals.

Experts to check lung-related illness among students

The Maharashtra government will form a committee of medical experts to undertake a survey of all school going students across the state to get a count of those suffering from lung-related ailments.

“The government will form a committee of medical experts that include specialists, who will conduct a survey of all school going children to identify those suffering from lung related ailments like asthma, so that it can be controlled at an early state,” state Health Minister Deepak Sawant said in response to a query in the Legislative Council.

Speaking during the Question Hour, Congress MLC Anant Gadgil said according to a recent survey conducted by a private firm, around 13 per cent school-going children suffer from lung related illnesses due to increasing construction activities, air pollution, climatic changes and lack of proper ventilation facilities.

He further questioned if cases of Asthma are on the rise among children in 5-11 age-group and if one out of 6 children in Maharashtra suffer from asthma.

In response to Gadgil’s query, Sawant said Mumbai is the second most polluted city after Delhi, followed by Bangalore and Kolkata at third and fourth places, respectively.

“Despite high level of pollution, the polluted air is naturally taken away from the city by sea winds,” he said.

To a query by NCP’s Hemant Takle on the preventive measures taken by government in this direction, Sawant said government through ‘Bal arogya swasthya shivir’, periodically conducts allergen tests of school going children and parents are informed if the child is found to be suffering from any lung-related illnesses.

In 2014-15, medical examination of school-going children in age group of 16-18 was done. Out of total 1,22,36,128 students examined, 1,15,053 were found to be suffering from breathing illness and of them 1,14,713 were given treatment. Remaining 340 students have been sent for further examination, he said.

Government mulls compensation for kin of accident

Maharashtra Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said the state government was considering a proposal to increase the amount of compensation to kin of victims in accidents involving state transport buses from Rs. three lakh to Rs. 10 lakh.

Replying to a discussion on the issue in the Assembly raised through a calling attention notice, Raote said that currently, the compensation given to the kin of those, who lose their lives in accidents involving Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is Rs. three lakh.

“We plan to increase the amount to Rs. ten lakh,” he said.

The issue was raised by Kunal Patil (Congress) and others, who said that 22 persons were killed and 35 were injured in the accident last month on Dhule-Chalisgaon Road in a head-on collision between a Chalisgaon-Surat state transport bus and a container.

He said the Chalisgaon-Dhule highway had no dividers and speed breakers. Local residents have been protesting for the same but with little success.

Raote said Dhule-Chalisgaon was part of the NH-211 and the Centre had undertaken the task of quadrupling and upgradation of the highway.
