After attacks on journalists increase, protection of journalists’ law demanded

The state government had promised to bring a legislation to protect journalists in 2005 but it still remains on paper.

journalistThere has been a rise in the number of attacks on journalists across the nation. Last month three scribes were assaulted in Uttar Pradesh raising questions about their security. In a shocking incident, a Mumbai-based journalist identified as Raghavendra Dubey was found in a pool of blood early on Friday hours after he covered a police raid on a bar in Mumbai. He died while he was taken to hospital. Earlier many journalists have been attacked in Maharashtra too raising questions about their security. The Press Council of India has demanded the enactment of a law to make attack on journalists a cognisable offence. The Opposition has also supported the demand for law to protect journalists.

Often journalists association has come forward to protest against the attack on scribes. The state government had promised to bring a legislation to protect journalists in 2005 but it still remains on paper. Journalists are increasingly facing violent attacks by those representing powerful vested interests, local goons and underworld dons. The freedom of press and security of journalists in the state also comes under the scanner following such incidents.

Leader of opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil had a discussion with the senior police officials about the journalist attack incidents occurred at Mira Road and Santacruz. He spoke with Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria about the Santacruz journalist attack case.

“The police must take strict action against the accused responsible for journalist attacks at Mira Road and Santacruz” said Patil.

“Of late there has been a rise in attacks against journalists. Media is known as the fourth pillar of democracy. The government must frame strict laws to curb attacks on journalists” said Ritesh Shah a Kandivali resident.

“Why has the Maharashtra government failed to take action against accused responsible for journalist attacks? Journalists must feel secure while discharging their duties” said Ashok Wadekar a Borivali resident.

According to reports Dubey was called to Mira Road police station as they wanted his help to trace a journalist who was beaten during a bar raid by owners for taking pictures.

Police said Dubey was in the police station till wee hours. He was found in an injured state 500 meters from the bar. A case has been registered against unknown assailants.

The two reporters were injured grievously and six bar employees suspected to have carried out the attack were detained.

Journalists Santosh Mishra and Shashi Sharma went to cover a police raid at White House orchestra bar in Mira Road (East) during which 14 dancing girls were rescued and a few employees taken into custody around 1 am on Friday.

After they left, the journalists were chased and brutally beaten up by bar employees, police said. A photojournalist who clicked pictures of the raid managed to escape.

“They charged at us armed with bamboo sticks and bottles. We ran from the bar to save ourselves. Mishra ran towards Kashimira while Sharma ran in the opposite direction,” the photojournalist said.

He said he spotted a beat chowky barely 100 metres from the bar. “I ran into the chowky and locked the doors from inside,” he said.

“We have detained Ganesh Kamat, Manager Sharad Shetty, Dinesh Shetty, waiter Mukesh, Kamat’s driver and seven others in this connection. We are verifying whether Dubey’s death is linked with the same incident,” Rajesh Pradhan, superintendent of police, Thane rural, said.

“This incident should not be seen as a standalone event and it is yet another incident of attack on journalist community in Mumbai and elsewhere in Maharashtra when they are in the line of duty,” a release issued by Rajesh Mascarenhas, secretary, Press Club, had said after the assault on the woman journalist.

State’s home minister Ranjit Patil said the matter was under investigation. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met representatives of journalist association and assured them that the matter of security of journalists would be taken up on Monday.

Sena taunts BJP over Pak flags in J&K, says ‘don’t forget nation’s interest’

Sanjay-Raut-LeadTaunting its ally in Maharashtra over the surfacing of Pakistani flags in the valley, the Shiv Sena on Friday said being in power doesn’t mean that the BJP will forget the nation’s interest.

“The BJP should raise its voice there (Srinagar), being in power doesn’t mean they will forget issues of nation’s interest,” Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said.

The Shiv Sena’s rebuke comes after the Congress party demanded that the PDP- BJP coalition Government should deal with separatist elements with an ‘iron rod’.

Pakistani and ISIS flags were reportedly waved today in Srinagar after the Juma-tul-Wida namaz, which is held on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramzan.

Won’t allow a drop from Maha’s water share go elsewhere: Fadnavis

Devendra-FadnavisChief Minister Devendra  Fadnavis on Friday told the Maharashtra Legislative assembly that his government will not spare even a drop of water for Gujarat from the state’s share in the Damanganga project.

“We have time and again said that we won’t let even a drop from Maharashtra’s share go to any other state. In case of Damanganga-Pinjal project we have gone ahead and rectified the mistakes done by the previous government,” Fadnavis said while intervening in a debate over the issue during the Question Hour in the Assembly.

NCP member Chagan Bhujbal asked several questions citing technical documents and quoting from the communication between state and union government bodies.

“The state government has not been able to augment over 132 TMC of water storage capacity for over 30 years,” he said seeking to know what does the government plan next.

Minister of State for Water Resources Vijay Shivtare said the state government has asked the Centre to take up the project under national mission for interlinking of rivers and also revised the designs of water tunnels so that the state would be able to get all of its 30 TMC water share.

He said capacity of the tunnels on the project has been enhanced.

Even after detailed reply by the MoS, when the Opposition members tried to target the state government over the issue of water that would go to Gujarat, Fadnavis intervened and asked the Opposition to refrain from indulging in politics over the issue and cooperate with the new government and ensure that the state gets each and every drop from its share.

Conduct Jundal’s trial through video conferencing: NIA to Court

JundalTrial against suspected top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorist Abu Jundal, an alleged mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, should be conducted through video conferencing as he faces threat to his life, NIA told a Delhi court.

The National Investigating Agency (NIA) said Jundal alias Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari, currently lodged in Arthur Road jail in Mumbai, cannot be produced here as Maharashtra government, in its May 2013 resolution, apprehends that he could be assassinated or kidnapped by rivals during his transit from jail to court.

However, Jundal’s counsel advocate M S Khan told District Judge Amar Nath that if the trial is conducted through video conferencing, his defence would be adversely affected.

Khan said he would not be able to properly communicate with his client through video conferencing which would affect his defence in the case.

He, however, said he would write a letter to Jundal to seek his instruction on the issue, after which the court posted the matter for further hearing on August 5.

The NIA, in its application in the court, has requested that the proceedings in the case lodged here was required to be expedited and the trial should be commenced through video conferencing.

NIA had chargesheeted Jundal here for allegedly conspiring to carry out terror activities in India, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and Aurangabad arms haul case.

In its plea, NIA had referred to the resolution passed by Maharashtra government saying it “exclude personal appearance of the accused Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari….after taking into consideration the request of Commissioner of Police, Mumbai to exclude the above-mentioned accused person from personal appearance before court in various cases registered against him due to possibility of assassination bid on the life of accused by rival group or a bid to kidnap.

Nashik violence figures in Maha Assembly; Oppn attacks government

The violence at Harsul town in Nashik earlier this week found echo in Maharashtra Assembly with opposition members charging the government with not doing enough to restore normalcy in the trouble-hit area.

The issue was raised by Jeeva Pandu Gavit (CPM) whose two adjournment notices seeking discussion on the matter was rejected by the Chair twice.

Gavit lamented that even though the notice seeking discussion was rejected, he was not allowed even to speak to draw the government’s attention to the ground situation.

Jayant Patil (NCP) said the Chair was not allowing opposition members to raise issues.

“The government has failed to curb the violence in Harsul,” he alleged.

Nashik Guardian Minister Girish Mahajan told the House that normalcy has been restored and he had visited the area twice to monitor the law and order situation, which is now peaceful.

Housing Minister Prakash Mehta, who is holding additional charge of Parliamentary Affairs, said the government will make a statement on the violence on Monday.

On Tuesday, one person (Ramdas Budhad) was killed in police firing when a protest march turned violent in Harsul.

The march was held to protest against the death of one Bhagirath Choudhary (26) whose body was found in a well in Baripada near Harsul on July 7.

Over a dozen policemen were also injured while trying to prevent miscreants from entering the riot-hit town.

According to police, 49 shops, 14 houses were damaged in the stone-pelting incident.

CBI conducts checks at Navy Hospital, Army Medical Stores

CBI on Friday carried out surprise checks at Indian Naval Hospital (INHS) in Mumbai’s Colaba and Armed Forces Medical Stores Depot in Kandivali after receiving information that drugs were being allegedly purchased in violation of the ‘Stock Policy’.

The action of the agency took place in coordination with Naval and Army authorities. CBI sources said they had received inputs that medicines are allegedly being procured from local dealers at exorbitant rates instead of purchasing these stocks at approved rates from contract dealers or original manufacturers in accordance with ‘Stock Policy’.

“The information also indicates that certain drugs are allegedly being procured in excess of the actual requirement and in violation of the ‘Stock Policy’, thereby leading to expiry of a large quantity of medicines,” an official said.

The sources said it is further alleged that expired medicines are being returned without realising the cost of the same from the local dealers.

Five held in shopping mall firing case

Five history-sheeters were arrested in connection with Tuesday’s firing incident at a shopping mall in Dadar in central Mumbai.

The accused were identified as Mukund Gadigaokar (31), Santosh Bhalekar (28), Rajesh Mewati (30), Ganesh Gore alias Ganya (22) and Anil Dhilod alias Anna (27). A revolver, three cartridges and a car were recovered from them, police said.

According to police, Gadigaokar and Bhalekar are the main accused in the case and one of them had fired two rounds inside Dadar’s Cosmos Mall, in which nobody was hurt.

“One of them entered the shopping mall and approached a mall employee named Hanumant Jagtap (45),” police said adding that the accused fired at Jagtap and told him to inform a person named Jayesh to call one Sandeep.

“The investigators have come to know that between 2013 and 2014, the accused had threatened a Dadar-based builder and extorted Rs 22 lakh from him,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti said.

At that time, the builder had been threatened by the accused, who had identified himself as Sandeep Patil, said DCP (Zone V) Mahesh Patil adding that the victim got scared for his life and did not approach police.

“Recently, the gang members again contacted the builder and threatened to extort money,” police said.

The builder, however, did not respond to the threatening calls, police said. “Therefore, in a bid to send him a strong message, one of the accused fired two rounds inside the mall on Tuesday,” the DCP said.

However, police are yet to find out why they chose the mall for firing.

All the five accused, who have several criminal cases registered against them in the city, have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC as well as the Arms Act, police said.

Maharashtra government directed to probe issue of contaminated chikkis

Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar Friday directed the state government to conduct an inquiry into allegations of contaminated ‘chikkis’ (sweet snack) being sold to tribal students in Ahmednagar district and recall the adulterated stock.

“According to me, issues like these concern human lives and are thus very important. I will put all the questions of (Council) members together and we can together sort out the issue. For now, I direct the government to conduct an inquiry into the issue and recall the stock found to be contaminated,” Nimbalkar said.

During the Question Hour, NCP MLC Kiran Pavaskar said the government should initiate swift action into allegations of contaminated chikkis being sold to tribal students, like it took in banning Maggi on reports that it contained an excessive amount of lead.

“The government was very swift when reports emerged on Maggi being harmful for health. Similarly, the government should be swift in inquiring about reports of contamination of chikkis. These chikkis are supplied to children and thus the government needs to be quick in taking action. I want to ask if the government will close down this company and destroy all the chikkis it supplied,” Pavaskar said.

When Minister of State, Food and Drug Administration, Vidya Thakur could not reply satisfactorily, Nimbalkar directed the government to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

While replying to another query, Thakur said that according to the Centre’s directives, the state government is examining samples of other food stuffs like Maggi, to ascertain if they contain an excess amount of lead.

To a question by Congress MLC Sharad Ranpise, Thakur said that medically it has not been proved that Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) causes cancer, kidney failure or other ailments and it only causes stomach aches, vomiting sensation or giddiness if consumed in excess.
