Who will be benefitted by ‘political iftar parties’?

As the holy month of Ramadan is about to end, politicians in India are marking the occasion, to gain some political mileage through it. Be it, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attending Shaina NC’s (BJP spokesperson) Iftar Party or West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attending Iftar party in traditional Muslim attire and every other party is busy hoisting iftar party just for political gains, forgetting its significance. Star studded these parties can earn the good will of celebrities but underprivileged Muslims still sit in queue in front of mosque for few morsels.

Iftar means, ‘break the fast” it is the evening meal when Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset. For Sunnis, it is at the time of the call to prayer at the evening prayer while for Shias, it is after the evening prayer. Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together. Iftar is taken right after Maghrib time, which is around sunset. Traditionally but not mandatory, three dates are eaten to break the fast in emulation of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, who broke his fast in this manner. Many Muslims believe that feeding someone iftar as a form of charity is very rewarding and it was practised by the Prophet Muhammad. In Bangladesh, a wide variety of foods are prepared to break the fast at Maghrib time. Traditionally, this is held at a regional or village mosque for those who have or will be performing the evening prayers. At the mosque, a mosque buffet is prepared by the local residents at which all are welcomed to break their fast together.

In India, almost every Muslim stops to rejoice for a few minutes following the iftar sirens and adhan. Preparations for iftar commence hours before, in homes and at roadside stalls. The fast can be broken by eating dates or drinking water, if the former is not available. In places like Hyderabad, people break their fast with Haleem because it has a rich taste and is quite filling. In southern states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Muslims break their fast with nonbu kanji, a rich, filling rice dish of porridge consistency, cooked for hours with meat and vegetables. This is often served with bonda, bajji, and vadai. Vegetarians of other communities are given a dish called surkumba, which is prepared from milk. It is mainly done in certain parts of Karnataka.

In northern states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, Muslims break their fast with family and friends, with most Mosques also arranging free ‘iftar’. Typically, the fast is opened with fresh dates, cut fresh fruits (sometimes served as chaat) and fruit juice along with fried dishes like samosas, pakodas etc. The spread of ‘iftar’ can be grand sometimes with dishes varying from vegetarian to non-vegetarian dishes and a variety of juices and sherbets. Iftar usually is a heavy meal and is followed by a light dinner before the night (isha) prayers and the taraweeh prayers.

Mumbai BJP is all prepared for fully loaded iftar party but the BJP in centre has given the politically-loaded iftar parties in the capital the cold shoulder. The approach of the party’s new national leadership marks a shift away from the policy of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who often employed Congress-like tactics to reach out to Muslims.

Unlike several former prime ministers starting with Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has neither hosted an iftar feast nor attended one. He stayed away from President Pranab Mukherjee’s iftar party last week, and so did other BJP ministers, barring Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla. Neither Heptulla nor BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has ever hosted a political iftar party. Iftar is nobody’s constitutional or political duty to hold a roza iftar. It is a purely religious and personal matter like breaking a Navratra fast. It is not a political event.

BJP’s Shahnawaz Hussain, who has been organising lavish iftar feasts for some15 years, did not host one this Ramzan. He said he had begun the practice on Vajpayee’s advice, but he had no particular reason for breaking with it this year. Atalji organised an iftar feast after our (BJP) victory in 1999 and then told me that from now on, you host it every year and I will join it. Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna introduced iftar parties as a demonstration of a leader’s commitment to secularism that a paradigm shift has taken place. In the old BJP, Vajpayee’s “secular” acts were balanced by celebrations like Murli Manohar Joshi’s Deepawali Milan.

Vasundhara Raje, Chief Minister of Rajasthan, hosted a grand iftar feast for over 1,300 invitees at her official residence in Jaipur. Functionaries of the Anjuman Dargah Sharief (of Moinuddin Chishti) presented her with a chunri. Raje held iftar parties in her earlier (2003-2008) term as well. On this occasion she appealed for brotherhood and unity: “If our language, blood, eyes are the same, then how are we different?”

BJP units in Maharashtra and Punjab organised iftars, as did units in Karnataka, Bihar and West Bengal, which were attended by Railway Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi, and state BJP chief Rahul Sinha respectively. State units in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, however, did not organise iftar parties. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar invited JD(U) and RJD members to his residence for Iftar party, while Uttar Pradesh government celebrated the evening at Raj Bhawan in Lucknow. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh on Sunday targeted the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, saying ‘pure politics’ was being played in the name of Iftar parties. Mamata Banerjee not attending the Iftar party of Sonia Gandhi. Let me put this, in perspective, these so called secular parties have nothing to do with the religion or respect towards religion. It is purely politics through iftar party.

Anyway, let them enjoy the parties, politics has its own timing to play. Only Allah can tell who will be benefitted with it, as far as Muslim appeasement is concerned.

Pankaja Pankaja, yes papa; eating chikki, yes papa: Congres MLAs sing outside Maha Assembly

PankajaStung by opposition’s attack against her over the “chikki scam”, which included singing of a popular nursery rhyme, Women and Child Development Minister Pankaja Munde on Monday sought to play it down by striking an emotional chord while invoking death of her father and BJP stalwart Gopinath Munde.

“When the opposition was attacking me, they should have refrained from using the word ‘papa’ in their jibes at me because I have just lost my father,” Munde said.

She was referring to the protest by opposition members who sang popular rhyme “Johnny Johnny… Yes Papa”, alluding to procurement of a set of items, including “chikki” (a popular snack) for Anganwadis without calling e-tenders by Child and Woman Department presided over by her.

Terming it as a scam totalling Rs 206 crore, the Congress had earlier filed a complaint with the state Anti-Corruption Bureau.

“Except this emotional issue, I am ready to counter the opposition on any allegations that they make against me or my government that stands strong as ever today. The opposition has started making personal attacks as they are devoid of any issues and want to shift focus from the corrupt practices they followed during their tenure,” she said.

The opposition members, who had worked out common strategies to attack the Fadnavis government in both the Houses during the monsoon session, which began today, also raised banners like “Chikki Wale Chikki, Rajgira Chikki, Price Rs 206 crore” and “Pankaja Munde Chikki Chor”.

Adarsh housing scam: SC issues notice to CBI on Chavan’s plea

Ashok-ChavanThe Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to CBI on the plea of former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan seeking recall of an order in the multi-crore Adarsh Housing Society.

The Bombay High Court had in March this year dismissed his appeal to recall an earlier order refusing to delete his name from the Adarsh housing scam case.

Chavan had filed a petition in December last year seeking to recall an order passed by Justice Tahaliyani refusing CBI the permission to drop his name from the Adarsh case.

The order refusing to recall his earlier ruling implies that Chavan will now face prosecution under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly misusing his official position to grant favours to the Adarsh society.

Chavan had earlier pleaded that certain observations in the order were on the points which had not been argued and he had not got the opportunity to address these.

The CBI had first approached the trial court seeking to drop Chavan’s name as an accused on the ground that the Governor had refused to sanction his prosecution. As the CBI court rejected it, the agency moved the HC.

Salman Khan hit-and-run case: Hearing adjourned till July 20

Salman-KhanThe hearing in the Salman Khan 2002 hit-and-run case has been adjourned till 20 July.

The Bombay HC on 1 July had deferred till July 13 an appeal filed by the Bollywood superstar against the five-year sentence awarded to him in the case, after the actor’s lawyer sought time to check documents. But the hearing as been adjourned till 20 July.

Although the ‘paper book’ (compilation of evidence and documents) was ready and copies had been served to both the sides by the court), Salman’s counsel Amit Desai urged for three weeks’ adjournment to check whether the documents were in order.

The actor’s lawyer said he would need to check whether translation of any document in vernacular language is required to be done in English. He also wanted to check whether any documents were missing, in which case he would file an application seeking a direction to place them on record.

The HC had on May 8 stayed the execution of the 5-year sentence awarded to 49-year-old Salman in the 13-year-old case and granted him bail while admitting his appeal.

Salman was convicted by a sessions court on May 6 and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment on various counts, including ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’.

A man was killed and four others were wounded when the actor’s Toyota Land Cruiser ran over them while they were asleep on a pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra on September 28, 2002.

Salman has challenged the findings of the trial court that he was drunk and was driving under the influence of liquor. The actor pleaded that the trial court had wrongly convicted him under the culpable homicide charge, because he had no knowledge that he would meet with an accident.

In the appeal, Salman argued that the trial court had failed to appreciate the fact that four prosecution witnesses, including the investigating officer, had said that there were four persons present in the Toyota Land Cruiser when the accident occurred and that it was the family driver Ashok Singh who was at the wheel.

Apart from being convicted of culpable homicide, Salman was also found guilty of offences under section 279 of IPC (rash and negligent driving) and sections 337 and 338 of IPC (causing hurt by acts endangering life or personal property of others), which prescribe six months’ jail.

Besides, he was sentenced to undergo jail for six months under sections 181 (driving without licence) and 185 (drink driving) of Motor Vehicles Act.

Salman was also found guilty under the Bombay Prohibition Act’s section 66 (a) and (b) for which he received two months imprisonment and fine of Rs. 500. All sentences will run concurrently.

Exit from ‘Opposition’ mindset, Shiv Sena tells BJP

In a stinging attack on its ally, the Shiv Sena on Monday said that it will be “unfortunate” if the BJP does not come out of its “Opposition” mindset and provide a strong leadership in Maharashtra even as it asserted that it cannot turn a blind eye to the situation on the border.

“Some people, when they open their eyes see the border crisis and Pakistan’s breach of trust time and again. This can be only seen by those who have a nationalist and a patriotic eye. Seeing all this is not a fault in perception but our values, which we will continue with.

“There are some who only keep seeing drains. If there is a poll done on whether a drain is important or Pakistan’s aggression, people will choose patriotism and nationalism,” the Sena said in an edit in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

The verbal duel between the two alliance partners had hit a new low when BJP leader Ashish Shelar had on Saturday advised the BJP to focus on civic issues in Mumbai, rather than talking about international ones.

Hinting at the internal rift within the BJP, the Sena said the ‘ammunition’ (controversies surrounding senior ministers of the state cabinet) which the Opposition has got to attack the state government in the assembly session, has not been earned by hard-work but the source lies somewhere else.

“If the present government does not come out of its opposition mindset and provide a strong leadership to the state, it will be most unfortunate,” the Sena said.

It further said that allegations on the law and order situation in the state have been raised by BJP leaders themselves and the Sena has nothing to do with it.

“(Devendra) Fadnavis government is running with the Sena’s support and we are answerable to people of the state. Sena was not born for power but for the people’s well being, Maharashta’s honour, and the security of the country. Thus, if anything goes wrong, we will take to task our enemies even with closed eyes,” the Sena said.

Woman attempts suicide after setting ablaze kids, one dies

Depressed over their poor financial condition, a 24-year-old woman in Bhiwandi town allegedly tried to commit suicide after setting on fire her two children, police said on Monday.

Akshara Chetan Paga took her two daughters, aged two and six months, into the bathroom of their house where she set them afire, Bhiwandi town’s assistant police inspector SR Patil said.

The woman then torched herself as well, he said.

Seeing smoke emanating from the house, their neighbours alerted the fire brigade and police rushed to the spot.

The woman’s elder daughter succumbed to her burns on the spot while Akshara and the infant suffered serious burns in the incident and were admitted to a hospital, he said.

The woman took the extreme step after being apparently fed up with the family’s poor financial condition, Patil said.

Offences under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the IPC have been registered against the woman, he added.

Maharashtra SIC won only one out of 84 cases challenging its order

The Maharashtra State Information Commission (SIC) could win only one case out of 84 in which its orders were challenged in different courts of law in the past 10 years, according to an RTI query.

In rest of the 83 cases, the orders were either reversed or are still pending, the reply to a query filed by RTI activist Anil Galgali showed.

Out of the 84 cases, three cases were filed in the Supreme Court while 81 cases were filed in the High Court of Bombay and its different benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad and tribunals as well.
Galgali had filed the Right To Information (RTI) query with the SIC seeking information about the cases in which different agencies moved the court against its order.

Initially, the information was denied, stating that no such data was available with the SIC, prompting Galgali to file an appeal.

Subsequently, Galgali was informed that in the period of 10 years from 2006 to 2015, a total of 84 cases went to court, in which the SIC got success in just one case whereas in the other 83 cases, its order was overturned.

The highest number of cases in which the court was approached was in 2013 with 24 cases followed by 23 in 2014, 12 in 2012, 10 in 2010, 7 in 2015, 5 in 2011, and one each in 2006, 2008 and 2009. No cases reached the court in 2007, the reply showed.

One case involving Reliance Energy Limited is pending since 2011, which pertains to the order of the SIC to bring the company under the purview of the RTI Act.

According to the data, the agencies which have knocked the doors of the court against the SIC’s orders are the government’s Home department, Mumbai University, Reliance Energy, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Police department, and S D Corporation.

“The SIC does not take much interest in the court cases filed against it, due to which its success rate is less than 1 percent,” Galgali said.

The activist, in a letter addressed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has demanded that to maintain the significance and to preserve the sanctity of the RTI Act 2005, the government should make arrangements of special Advocates to represent the SIC’s side effectively.

Steep metro fare hike plan to be challenged in SC: Maharashtra CM Fadnavis

The dispute between Reliance Infra-led Mumbai Metro One and the state is set to intensify with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis saying his administration will challenge the proposal to increase fares up to Rs 110 for the 11.4-km metro service, in the Supreme Court.

The FFC (Fare Fixation Committee) has recommended a tariff structure of Rs 10-110 for the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro, which is an over threefold increase over the present fare of Rs 10-40.

“The FFC recommendations have not yet reached me. But if this is the fact it is totally unacceptable. We will challenge it in the Supreme Court. If any such decision is taken before the special CAG audit is conducted, it will not be in the best interest of commuters,” Fadnavis told a news agency.

The project, which is a public private partnership (PPP) model, has been embroiled in controversy over fare fixation as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) insisted on Rs 9-13 fare as per the concession agreement, while the operator fixed the rates at Rs 10-40 as per the Metro Act.

The MMRDA later challenged the fares that MMOPL fixed in the Bombay High Court and then in the Supreme Court, which set a deadline for the FFC to come up with its recommendations.

However, the state government has decided to challenge the FFC recommendation in the Supreme Court.

When contacted, a spokesperson of the Anil Ambani Group- run MMOPL, however, said they are examining the FFC report submitted on July 8, and will work towards a phased implementation of the new fare recommendations.

“We will go in for a gradual fare increases together with the mitigating impact of potential real estate development and subsidy from the state, and keeping in mind at all times the overall interest of the commuters,” the company said in a statement.

According to an expert involved in the process of determining the tariff, the decision was taken on the principles of sustainability and affordability. “The fares were arrived at on the basis of sustainability of the project for the operator and at the same time it should be affordable to commuters. Since safety cannot be compromised and at the same time the operator should not be perpetually in loss, therefore the proposal to steeply increase the fares,” the expert, who wished not to be identified, said.

He said sustainability depends on the cost of construction, which is different for private or PPP projects as the capital cost is higher in a such model compared to EPC model where the risk is borne by the government. For PPP, the loan has to be raised from the market.

As per Metro Act, it’s binding on MMOPL to implement the new fares.

“However, when to implement it is up to the operator. Besides, if the government wants, it can intervene by providing subsidy. But these fares will be binding on MMOPL to implement as per the Act,” the expert said.

Can we commit suicide, Maharashtra farmers ask government

In a bizarre development, seven debt-ridden farmers, among them three women, in Maharashtra’s Wardha district have sought the administration’s “permission” to commit suicide.

“The situation has become so bad that these seven peasants have approached the district officials requesting their green signal to end their lives,” said Kishore Tiwari, president of the Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti, an NGO working for farmers’ rights.

Kishore Ingale, Bhanudas Wadadkar, Pankaj Gawande, Shankar Khadse, and the women farmers – Kundabai Lonkar, Kamala Warhade and Vasanta Gingavkar – from Wadad village, have been running from pillar to post since January for the aid promised by the Maharashtra government, he said.

Around 10 days ago, these farmers wrote letters and simply walked down to the local tehsildar (government revenue department officer) to submit to them a memorandum, seeking their “clearance” to commit suicide.

They got an official acknowledgement to their “suicide permission letters” from the amused officials, which they submitted to the collector’s office and got another acknowledgement, Tiwari said.

As per government norms, the farmers are entitled to an aid of around Rs.4,000 per head for crop losses they suffered due to hailstorms, droughts and floods last year.

“For over six months, the money remains locked up in bank accounts as the district authorities are not clearing the disbursal. This is now forcing the farmers to write letters and ask for ‘clearance’ before committing suicide,” Tiwari said.

In the meantime, the current dry spell in the state has damaged around 70 percent of sown crops, and claimed 23 lives in the past 12 days.

These include seven from Yavatmal, five from Amravati, four from Wardha, two each from Akola and Buldhana, one each from Bhandara, Chandrapur and Washim districts.

The dry spell and crop losses are estimated at around Rs.8,000-10,000 per acre, pushing the farmers into deeper debt traps.

UP IPS officer, who complained against Mulayam get rape charge, seeks CBI probe

Amitabh-ThakurAmitabh Thakur, a senior police officer from Uttar Pradesh, has asked the Centre for security, alleging that he is being intimidated by Samjawadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav because his wife filed a corruption case against a minister from his party, which rules UP.

Mr Thakur, an Indian Police Service or IPS officer posted in Lucknow, has also demanded “that everything since the day my wife Nutan Thakur filed a case against UP minister Gayatri Prajapati should be probed by the CBI.”

Hours after Mr Thakur alleged on Saturday that Mulayam Singh had threatened him in a phone call, a rape case was registered against him by the police on a complaint filed by a Ghaziabad-based woman six months ago. Mr Thakur said the timing of the first information report or FIR registered against him shows it is a case of “political vendetta.”

Mulayam Singh is neither a constitutional head nor into administration, said Thakur, adding that he seeks an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the case.

Thakur’s social activist wife, Nutan Thakur, said that they are petitioning the ministry to provide them security by central forces as they had lost faith in the state police.

The IPS officer had on Saturday filed a police complaint saying Mulayam Singh Yadav threatened him over telephone to mend his ways or face dire consequences.

Hours later, an FIR was registered against Thakur accusing him of rape.

Thakur told police at the Hazratganj station that he received a call from Mulayam Singh on Friday evening.

Thakur’s wife in an e-mail to media persons attached a voice recording where a man — alleged to be Mulayam Singh — asks Thakur not to be a ‘loose cannon’ and say anything about anybody.

“I have sympathies with you… have met your parents in Patna where they asked me to take care of you… don’t do this,” the man tells Thakur.

The Indian Police Service (IPS) officer alleged that it was Yadav’s landline number from his house at Vikramaditya Marg of Lucknow.

The official’s wife, who is a social activist, said he came under fire because she had filed a police complaint against state Mining Minister Gayatri Prajapati that allegedly incensed the former chief minister.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has downplayed the audio tape controversy involving his father and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and a senior IPS officer Amitabh Thakur. Breaking his silence on the ongoing tussle between Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amitabh Thakur, Akhilesh on Monday said, “Mulayam Singh Yadav was only trying to make Amitabh Thakur understand the things.”

Akhilesh added that Mulayam was only giving an advise to the IPS officer and nothing else even as the police officer claimed that the Samajwadi Party supremo threatened him.
