Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and he would play the remaining two and a half years of their term like a fast-paced T20 match. He was speaking at a public rally in Mumbai.
“CM Shinde and I are now in power. We have two and a half years in our hands and we will play like a T-20 cricket match. There is no time to play a Test match now,” Fadnavis said. Shinde became chief minister in June this year after breaking up the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and toppling the Sena-NCP-Congress coalition government.
Fadnavis, meanwhile, also said that attempts were being made by some people to spread fear that Mumbai will be separated from Maharashtra. “I am making it clear that Mumbai will remain an integral part of Maharashtra and all Marathi festivals will be celebrated without any restrictions,” the BJP leader said.
India posted a mammoth total of 208 propelled by half-centuries of Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul and a blinder of an innings from Surya Kumar Yadav.
After losing quick wickets in the initial overs, India came back strongly with the help of KL Rahul (55) and Suryakumar Yadav (46) who stitched an important third wicket partnership of 68 runs to power India to a commendable total.
Hardik Pandya (71*) also played an attacking inning and punished the Australian bowlers to help India achieve a daunting total.
Australian captain Aaron Finch invited India to bat in the first innings after winning the toss.
Australia made quick inroads in the Indian batting line up with Rohit Sharma losing his wicket to Hazlewood in the third over, in an attempt to make use of the fielding restrictions. Nathan Ellis positioned at deep square leg gobbled up the flick played by the Indian captain.
Ellis then cut short Kohli’s scratchy inning in the fifth over, ending his seven-ball stay. Kohli failed to clear the infield, dragging a length ball to mid-on, spooning a simple catch to Cameron green.
A few eye-catching strokes from Rahul and Yadav ensured India made use of the powerplay. India ended the powerplay at 46 with the loss of two wickets.
KL Rahul then partnered with Surya to take the attack to the Australian bowlers, providing India with much required momentum in the middle overs.
KL notched up his fifty in the process, proving his worth at the top of the batting order.
The right-hander smashed three sixes and four boundaries, before being dismissed to hazelwood at 55, leaving India at 103/3 in the 12th over.
The wicket of Rahul did not stop Surya from continuing to play flamboyant shots as he sent the ball over the ropes twice consecutively in the next over of Zampa. India were 126/4 in the 14th over when Surya made his way to the pavilion.
However, Cameron Green got the better of the batter as he had him edge a rising delivery to Matthew Wade behind the stumps. Surya made a contribution of 46 from 25 balls, smashing four sixes and two boundaries.
Axar Patel was promoted ahead of Dinesh Karthik but failed to make a mark as he was sent back in the 16th over leaving the team at 146/5.
The designated finisher Karthik failed to trouble the opposition as he perished in the 19th over looking to play big shots. Hardik Pandya took over the mantle from Surya and continued playing attacking shots, plundering the Aussies for runs whenever the Australian bowlers erred in their line and length.
Pandya scored an unbeaten half-century and ended with 71 from 30 playing the role of the finisher. The all-rounder smashed five sixes and seven boundaries powering India to 208/6 at the end of 20 overs.
Brief Score: India 208/6 in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 71*, KL Rahul 55; Nathan Ellis 3/30) vs Australia

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has summoned Twitter India and Delhi Police officials over alleged videos of child pornography and rape being shared on the social media platform.
DCW took Suo moto cognizance of several alleged tweets on the social media platform Twitter displaying child pornography.
“Videos of child pornography were shared on Twitter and were sold for Rs 20. Twitter is yet to delete them and report it further. We have summoned the head of Twitter India and have sought a report. We have also summoned Delhi Police and have sought immediate action,” DCW chief Swati Maliwal told to agencies.
DCW said these tweets are openly depicting videos and photographs of sexual acts involving children. In its letter to Twitter India and Delhi Police, the Commission said “Almost all the tweets are portraying children completely naked and many of them also depict brutal rape and other non-consensual sexual activities with children and women. Shockingly, some of these videos even depict rape with children and women while they are asleep!”
“Some of the twitter accounts engaging in these criminal acts appear to be running a racket wherein they seek money for providing pornographic and rape videos of children and women from other users of the social media platform,” said DCW.
The Commission claimed there appear to be hundreds of such objectionable videos on the social media platform which are openly displaying child pornography and rape videos of women and children.
DCW said it is deeply distressing that such illegal acts involving sexual abuse of children and young women are being publicized openly through the social media platform Twitter.
The Commission said it wishes to ascertain the steps being taken by Twitter to prevent such “filthy and outrightly criminal acts” being propagated through its medium as well as the systems in place in the platform to immediately report the same to law enforcement agencies.
“Now therefore you are hereby summoned to appear before the Commission for the purpose aforementioned on September 26. If you fail to comply with this order without lawful excuse, you will be subjected to the consequences of non-attendance as provided in law,” stated DCW.
Senior BJP leader Anurag Thakur has said the party’s outreach in Lok Sabha seats held by the “real” Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde would only strengthen the ruling alliance in Maharashtra ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
Thakur’s remarks came days after he visited Lok Sabha constituencies of Kalyan and Mumbai South Central, held by members of Eknath Shinde-led Sena faction Shrikant Shinde and Rahul Shewale respectively, giving the new alliance partner some anxious moments about their future in the general election.
Shrikant, a two-term member from Kalyan parliamentary seat, is the son of the Maharashtra chief minister, while Shewale is the leader of the Shiv Sena in Lok Sabha.
Eknath Shinde led a rebellion within the Shiv Sena in June, claiming the support of more than 40 of the party’s 55 MLAs in Maharashtra, to become the chief minister with the support of the BJP.
The then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, who led the coalition government of Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress, resigned from the post in the face of the large-scale rebellion.
Thakur’s visit to the two Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra was part of the BJP’s plan to strengthen the organisation in 144 parliamentary seats it lost in the 2019 elections.
Seeking to allay apprehensions in the Shinde camp, Thakur said he would focus on strengthening the BJP in the respective constituencies and ensuring timely implementation of central schemes. “A strong BJP will benefit the alliance. We will also remove shortcomings if any.
We are working to ensure that we recover the lost ground in the one-and-a-half years left for elections,” Thakur, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Youth Affairs and Sports, told reporters.
He said several central schemes such as building toilets, developing sports infrastructure and other aspects of the smart city project were not given due attention during the Thackeray government had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the Shiv Sena and won 23 out of the 25 seats where it had fielded candidates. Shiv Sena, which had contested 23 seats, managed to win 18 seats. After the rebellion in the Shiv Sena ranks, 12 of the 18 Lok Sabha members from Maharashtra had shifted allegiance to Shinde.
