New evidence shows there is one more planet in the Universe

UNIVERSE

All astronomers concur that planets are created in protoplanetary discs, which are the bands of gas and dust that encircle newly formed, young stars. Even though the universe has hundreds of these discs, it has been challenging to observe genuine planetary birth and development in these settings.

Currently, astronomers at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian have created a novel method to find these elusive newborn planets, along with “smoking gun” proof of a small Neptune or Saturn-like planet hiding in a disc. The Astrophysical Journal Letters today published a description of the findings.

According to Feng Long, a postdoctoral scholar at the Center for Astrophysics and project leader, “directly finding young planets is highly tough and has thus far only been effective in one or two situations.” Because they are encased in substantial amounts of gas and dust, planets are always too dim for us to see them.

Instead, they must look for signs that a planet is forming beneath the dust.

Long notes that in recent years, “many structures have appeared on discs that we think are caused by the existence of a planet, but it could be caused by something else, too.” “We need new methods to examine and provide evidence that a planet exists.”

Long chose to revisit the LkCa 15 protoplanetary disc for her research. The disc is situated in the Taurus constellation, 518 light years away. Previous research employing ALMA Observatory images showed proof of planet formation in the disc.

Long dug over fresh, high-resolution ALMA data on LkCa 15, mostly from 2019, and found two faint characteristics that weren’t there before.

Long found a dusty ring with two distinct, brilliant clusters of material circling within it at a distance of around 42 astronomical units from the star, or 42 times the distance between Earth and the Sun. The material was divided by 120 degrees and appeared as a small clump and a bigger arc.

Long used computer simulations to analyse the situation and determine what was accumulating the material. He discovered that the objects’ sizes and placements were consistent with the presence of a planet.

She explains, “This arc and clump are separated by around 120 degrees.” That degree of disparity is significant mathematically; it doesn’t just happen.

Long points point to locations in space known as Lagrange points, where two moving bodies, like an orbiting planet and a star, form stronger zones of attraction where matter may gather.

According to physics and the things involved, Long says, “We’re seeing that this material is not simply floating around freely, it’s stable and has a preference where it wants to be put.”

In this instance, the L4 and L5 Lagrange points are where Long found the arc and clump of material. A small planet hidden between them at an angle of 60 degrees is what is producing the buildup of dust between locations L4 and L5.

The findings indicate that the planet is between one and three million years old and is around the size of Neptune or Saturn. (When it comes to planets, that is a youthful age.)

Due to technological limitations, it might not be feasible to directly image the small, young planet anytime soon, but according to Long, additional ALMA studies of LkCa 15 can offer more proof in support of her planetary discovery.

She also expects that astronomers will use her novel method for finding planets in the future, which relies on material that preferentially gathers around Lagrange points.

I sincerely hope that this approach can be extensively used in the future, she adds. The only restriction is that because the signal is weak, very deep data is required.

Taiwan looking for ‘appropriate’ way to mourn Queen Elizabeth

Taiwan is looking for the most “appropriate” way to express its condolences for the death of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and is still in the process of understanding plans for her state funeral, the island’s foreign ministry said on Thursday.

The queen’s funeral will take place in London on Monday, and a host of world leaders, royalty and other dignitaries have already said they will attend.

Britain, like most countries, has no diplomatic ties with Chinese-claimed Taiwan, but the two have close unofficial relations.

Taiwan Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman Tsui Ching-lin told reporters that they and their representative office in Britain were still in the process of “understanding the plans” for the funeral.

We “hope to use the most appropriate way to express the mourning of our government and people to the British royal family and government”, Tsui said, when asked whether a Taiwan government representative would be at the funeral.

Taiwan views Britain as a like-minded democratic partner and has been heartened by support from London over issues like taking part in the World Health Organization, which the island is excluded from due to Chinese pressure.

Taiwan’s government was quick to send its condolences after the queen’s death, with President Tsai Ing-wen tweeting in English that “Taiwan remembers & celebrates her life of leadership & service, which set an example for people around the world”.

Britain’s de facto embassy, formally called the British Office Taipei, has also opened a public condolence book.

Britain is inviting a representative from North Korea to attend the funeral, but Afghanistan, Syria and Venezuela will not be given an invite, a foreign office source said on Wednesday.

Russia, Myanmar and Belarus have also not been asked to attend.

American singer R. Kelly has been convicted on federal child pornography charges.

On Wednesday, R Kelly was convicted for making videos of himself abusing his 14-year-old goddaughter. The victim is now 37 years old.

After a month-long trial in Chicago, the verdict was announced.

According to New York Post, on six of the 13 counts Kelly was charged with, including three child pornography offences, the jury returned with a guilty judgment after deliberating for almost 11 hours starting on Tuesday afternoon.

One such crime alone carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five to ten years in Chicago.

It’s important to mention that it comes on top of a 30-year prison sentence handed to him in June, earlier this year. In June, he was found guilty of sex trafficking and racketeering in a separate federal case in Brooklyn.

Kelly was charged with child pornography and accused of manipulating his 2008 state trial where he was found not guilty. Kelly was also accused of videotaping himself while having sex with underage girls.

According to New York Post, jurors found him not guilty on Wednesday of the conspiracy accusation that he had rigged his prior trial.

In addition, the jury acquitted him of two further charges of enticement and three counts of conspiracy to receive child pornography.

New York Post reports that during the trial, the prosecution claimed that the R Kelly was “a sexual predator” who had used his popularity to prey on young girls and videotape the abuse.

“Robert Kelly abused many girls over many years,” Assistant US Attorney Elizabeth Pozolo told the jurors, using the fallen star’s full name. “He committed horrible crimes against children…All these years later, the hidden side of Robert Kelly has come out.”

New York Post further reported that graphic videos of Kelly abusing his teenage goddaughter, who provided incriminating testimony against him, were part of the prosecution’s list of evidence against the singer

Lakhimpur Kheri: 6 accused arrested for raping and murdering of Dalit teenage sisters in UP

In a heart-wrenching incident, two Dalit teenage sisters on Wednesday were found hanging from a tree in Lakhimpur Kheri district.

Six men were arrested on Thursday in connection with the rape and murder of two Dalit teenage sisters, police said.

The girls, aged 15 and 17, were found hanging from a tree in a sugarcane field about a kilometre from their house in the Nighasan police station area.

”We have arrested Junaid, Sohail, Hafizur Rehman, Karimuddin, Arif and Chottu in an overnight operation,” Lakhimpur Kheri Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjiv Suman told reporters.

Junaid and Sohail were in a relationship with the two sisters, he said.

”According to preliminary investigation, the two sisters left their home on Wednesday afternoon after Junaid and Sohail persuaded them. Junaid and Sohail have confessed that they strangulated the girls after raping them,” the SP said.

The duo then called Karimuddin and Arif to dispose of their bodies. They later hanged the bodies from a tree to make it look like suicide, Suman said.

An FIR has been registered under sections 302 (murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, he said.

A post-mortem examination is underway at the district hospital. Everything is being done with the consent of the girls’ family members, he said.

The girls’ mother had on Wednesday claimed that they were murdered.

Opposition outrage

Expressing her grief over the incident, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed the state government and said, “The incident of murder of two sisters in Lakhimpur (UP) is heart-wrenching.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said in a tweet, “Murder of two Dalit sisters after kidnapping them in Nighasan police station area. Their father’s allegation on the police is very serious that they carried out ‘panchnama’ and post-mortem without the family’s consent. After farmers in Lakhimpur, the killing of Dalits is now a repetition of the murder of ‘Hathras’ daughter’.”

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati wrote that the “heartbreaking incident” from Lakhimpur was linked to the fact that “criminals in UP are fearless because the priorities of the government are wrong.”

The former chief minister said that the incident exposed the Adityanath government’s claims on reducing crime and maintaining law and order.

The relatives say that those girls were abducted in broad daylight. Giving false advertisements in newspapers and TV every day does not improve law and order. After all, why are heinous crimes against women increasing in UP?”

Australian women’s cricket team star batter and vice- captain Rachel Haynes on Thursday announced her retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtains down on an illustrious career.

The 35-year-old southpaw, who made her international debut back in 2009, represented her country in six Tests, 77 ODIs, and 84 T20Is.

“To all the teammates across my career, you are the reason I’ve played as long as I have.

You’ve inspired me to be better every day. I’ve learnt something from all of you, on and off the field,” Haynes said in a statement.

“You’ve challenged me as a player, helped me grow as a person and most importantly, made cricket fun,” she added.

Haynes is the ninth highest run-getter for Australia in both the limited overs formats, having scored 2585 runs in ODIs at an average of 39.76 and 850 runs in T20Is, averaging 26.56.

She has served as Australia’s vice-captain since 2018. Since then, Australia have bagged three World Cups — one 50-over and two T20 — and also a gold medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games this year.

“One of the great things about having a long career is watching those around you develop. I’m extremely proud of the way this team has brought players in and nurtured their development,” she said.

“The ability to help players transition smoothly has been instrumental to our team’s success. To be a leader within this environment has been the greatest privilege of my career,” she added.

Haynes, however, will continue to play in the Women’s Big Bash League with the Sydney Thunder from next month but will not be part of the New South Wales team’s domestic campaign, starting next week.

“On behalf of everyone at Cricket Australia I’d like to congratulate Rachael on an amazing career and also recognise the outstanding contribution she has made off the field,” said Nick Hockley, the Cricket Australia chief executive.

China tackle 5,94,000 cases of telecom and internet fraud in 15 months

China is in the midst of a massive menace of online scammers who lure people into investing in seemingly legitimate products which apparently results in victims losing their identity and life savings, media reports said.

In just 15 months through July 2022, China tackled 594,000 cases of telecom and internet fraud, reported Nikkei Asia citing the Ministry of Public Security.

Moreover, the report said that in 2021, authorities stopped 1.5 million people from transferring 329.1 million yuan (USD 47.5 billion) to scammers.

Basically, scammers develop a rapport with targets through various means of communication such as online chats.

The victim of the fraud starts to trust these complete strangers, transfers life savings only to find out later that it is a cellphone or computer scammer.

The scammers usually work in groups and follow carefully designed scripts and lure people into investing in seemingly legitimate products, often crypto currencies.

The crimes have caused hundreds of billions of dollars in losses and led to some suicides as well.

It is worth noting that the lack of laws to prevent private information leaks and an earlier loophole that allowed telecom operators to sell subscriptions without checking any identification documents created a safe haven for scammers, reported Nikkei Asia.

Earlier this month, Chinese lawmakers passed a law to combat rampant telecom and online fraud in an urgent response to the problem.

The new law taking effect December 1 gives enforcement agencies the power to pursue suspects abroad and orders telecom companies and banks to help hunt down scammers.

The scams involve not only fooling gullible people into transferring money but also include the reselling of personal information, human smuggling, forging of official documents and other criminal behaviors.

A thriving underground information market collects all sorts of personal data such as ID numbers and addresses from businesses and even government agencies, and then sells the information to advertisers and even scammers.

Scammers use equipment that can interrupt and tamper with telecom signals, enabling them to alter their caller IDs so that victims believe they are receiving calls from official numbers.

They also use bulk messaging software to send text messages masked as notices from telecom operators, banks and other institutions to thousands of users.

These technologies and equipment make it much harder to track scammers, said Fu Liang, an independent telecom industry analyst. In recent years, scam groups also used custom-made fraudulent apps to make people believe they are logging on to legitimate investment platforms.

The introduction of the law provides legal support for the fight against telecom and internet fraud but the activities will not die out immediately, anti-fraud experts said.

As with any other crime, they will continue to evolve with the environment and technology, the experts said.

Karnataka govt to table anti-conversion bill in Legislative Council today

Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai

The Basavaraj Bommai government is likely to table the anti-conversion Bill in the Karnataka Legislative Council today.

“Even Congress and JDS must support this bill introduced. Everything should go smoothly. It was passed in the lower house, doing it in the upper house now. We’re all enthusiastic it will be passed and it is one of the most awaited bills,” said BJP MLC DS Arun.

Last year in December, amid the ruckus by the Opposition, the Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, 2021 or anti-conversion Bill was passed in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly but due to the lack of majority, the Prohibition of Conversion Bill was not presented in the Council.

The Government has decided to present the proposal in the Karnataka Legislative Council today and Congress is likely to oppose the bill but since BJP has a majority, the possibility of passing the bill has increased.

The Bill will provide for the protection of the right to freedom of religion and prohibition of unlawful conversion from one religion to another by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or by any fraudulent means.

The bill introduced by the BJP government gives the right to any person to file a complaint against religious conversion, protecting the right to freedom of religion in the state.

It proposes imprisonment of up to 10 years for forced religious conversion and the offense is made to be a non-bailable and cognizable. According to the new law, any converted person, his parents, brother, sister, or any other person who is related to him by blood, marriage, adoption, or in any form associated, or colleague may file a complaint of such conversion.

The bill has the purpose of prohibiting unlawful conversion of religion, providing protection to those who were forced to convert from one religion to another by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement, the promise of marriage, or by any fraudulent means and for the matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

“No person shall convert or attempt to convert, either directly or otherwise, any other person from one religion to another by use or practice of force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or by any fraudulent means or by any other means or promise of marriage, nor shall any person abet or conspire such conversion,” the Bill stated.

Notably, the bill was introduced by the BJP government in the Karnataka Assembly last year after which it sparked controversy and was opposed by Opposition parties in the state.
