Senior JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar on Tuesday said the poll outcome in the national capital was a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asserted that the same blow would be given to the saffron party in Bihar.
“Delhi election results indeed is a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Delhi is the heart of the country so it reflects the mood of the country,” Kumar told reporters.
Kumar congratulated Aam Aadmi Party’s convener Arvind Kejriwal for the party’s landslide victory in Delhi.
“There was a talk of swing in favour of AAP in Delhi, but indeed the entire pendulum of the clock has moved from one end to another,” he said to highlight BJP’s defeat in Delhi.
“BJP ideological parent Jansangh was born in Delhi. The Prime Minister had addressed several rallies and every decision by BJP was taken in his name…Its indeed referendum on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Kumar said.
“Delhi is the national capital where people from all parts of the country live so it reflects changing mood of the country against BJP-led NDA government at the Centre,” the JD(U) leader flanked by state party chief Basistha Narayan Singh and senior leaders Vijay Chaudhary and Shyam Rajak said while talking to mediapersons at his residence.
People from Bihar who live in Delhi in large numbers have also shown their decision on BJP by voting for AAP, Kumar said.
“Astonishingly in such a short span of nine months of Narendra Modi government, the mood of people is changing against him,” he said and attributed this to BJP’s failure to deliver on any of the tall promises made during the poll.
“He (Modi) talked lofty things on return of black money, paying enhanced bonus to farmers, special status to Bihar in 100 days but none of them are visible even after lapse of nine months,” Kumar, whose JD(U) severed ties with BJP over elevation of Modi, said.
“Hawabazzi se kaam nahi chalega (things will not work only on the basis of lofty talks),” he said in an apparent dig at the Prime Minister.
Kumar said Bihar would be the next destination where BJP would face similar results. Bihar will go to poll before November this year.
In remarks clearly aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said the AAP’s massive win in Delhi was “a big defeat for the arrogant”.
“This is a victory for the people and a big defeat for the arrogant and those who are doing political vendetta and spreading hate among people,” she said in a tweet.
“My congratulations to all the Delhi voters, AAP workers and leaders for the big victory. Well done to you. All my best wishes. We are very happy,” she added.
“The Delhi election is a turning point (in the) present political situation. Shows political vendetta has no place in democracy. The country needed this change.”
The Trinamool Congress leader also congratulated Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
“My hearty congratulations to AAP for sweeping Delhi elections. All the best Arvind Kejriwal the new CM.”
As the picture became clearer in Delhi with results being counted, social activist Anna Hazare on Tuesday congratulated Arvind Kejriwal on his party’s victory in the Assembly Elections.
Anna said, “Arvind Kejriwal is going to be chief minister of Delhi. My congratulations to him.”
“People used to say wind was blowing in favour of Narendra Modi. It was not the case. He had made promises to people but didn’t fulfil them. He used to say his government will reduce corruption but that didn’t happen,” Anna said, adding people’s trust and faith in him has eroded.
“People believe Arvind will fight for them,” he said further.
Speaking further on Kejriwal’s win, Anna said: “My expectations from him are – don’t repeat the mistakes which you committed in your last term as CM. Don’t travel on Metro, take oath in Ramlila Maidan. Remain simple. The more you stay simple, the more people will have trust in you.”
He also cautioned Kejriwal against being confrontationist, but asked not to give up movements.
“Don’t give up movements. But, start agitations only when they are necessary,” Anna suggested.
He further sought to absolve Kiran Bedi of blame for BJP’s defeat in Delhi.
“I don’t blame Kiran Bedi for BJP’s defeat,” he said.
“Who am I to say if Bedi was wrong in joining the BJP,” he said further, in response to a question.
Anna said he will not attend Kejriwal’s swearing-in ceremony. “What will I do by attending the swearing-in?” he asked, adding “I have already congratulated him”.
Bharatiya Janata Party’s chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi on Tuesday lost to Aam Aadmi Party candidate SK Bagga in the Krishna Nagar constituency.
Bedi lost from Krishna Nagar by 2277 votes, which was considered to be a BJP bastion until now.
Addressing the media, Bedi said she respects people’s verdict and hoped Kejriwal will make Delhi a world-class city.
The former IPS officer thanked the ‘inspirational’ BJP leadership for inducting her into the party and anointing her as CM candidate.
“Party didn’t ask for any money from me and accepted me the way I am. I am thankful for all the respect and love I’ve received from BJP members,” Bedi asserted.
Bedi extended congratulations to the AAP and Kejriwal for the emphatic win. She hoped Kejriwal and his team will fulfil the poll promises and work for the poor.
She also apologised to the BJP leadership and party workers for not being able to live up to their expectations. “I think I haven’t lost, I did my best, I would have lost if I hadn’t given my best. The BJP will introspect,” Bedi added.
When asked whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi was responsible for the Delhi poll debacle, Bedi maintained, “Modi ji wasn’t the CM candidate, I’ve taken responsibility for the loss.”
Since 1993 the BJP hasn’t lost from the particular constituency. Union Minister Harsh Vardhan, who was the CM candidate for BJP in 2013 Delhi polls, had won from Krishna Nagar with a margin of 43,000 votes.
Bedi was hand picked by Amit Shah and inducted into the BJP in January this year.
Bedi’s induction into the BJP had led to discontentment amongst the Delhi unit.
Bedi, however, today maintained that she remains a member of the BJP.
“I am happy to be a member of a strong national party,” she asserted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now become the doctor of sociology. I am not underestimating his abilities but to egg an inadequately educated Jitan Ram Manjhi against a qualified engineer like Nitish Kumar who has done some work for Bihar, is not co-operative federalism. It is so simple, keep yourself above board and the states will co-operate towards mutual and national interest. You have to gently nudge them and effectively persuade them.
Mutual co-operation between states is a prerequisite for Inland water transportation to become effective and economical. When there is huge difference of opinion between Shiv Sena and BJP in Maharashtra how can they effectively run the government? When Modi can have a friendly conversation with US President Barack Obama then why can’t he resolve all differences with Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray? “Thodi unse bhi gappen mar liya kijiye”. He wants Belgaun to become a part of Maharashtra. It’s better to administer those territories which are in your possession first. According to reports the government is yet to disburse 50 per cent compensation for farmers.
What federalism has got to do with it? Today people want parties to either perform or perish. I have long been talking about citizen development. Our citizens want everything for free. Their efforts must be mobilised and they must undergo rigorous training, both, physical and vocational. Our society is divided on caste basis as we have so many castes which include BC, OBC, Dalits, Mahadalits etc. It is not intended to belittle them or say anything against them. It’s the duty of the state to reduce such divisions by their economic amelioration and not merely political empowerment for occupation of a chair.
Muslims must organize themselves for their economic betterment through modern education and artisanship. Government must facilitate export of handicrafts and other products made by them such as Banarasi sarees and Bhadohi carpets. Part of the money thus earned must be used for cleaning and upgrading their localities and education of their children. Governors can be very helpful in redressing local grievances.
There must be coordination between local police on the borders and local administration. Just now, I noticed a goat stripping away some stuck eatable in a long strip of wrapping paper. Where are the leaves for them to nibble? The crows drink water from puddles left by car washings. “Bhaiya kutch zamini hakikat ko dekho”.
“Badla sara zamana babu, badla sara zamana…” , a hilarious song from the film Paigham.
If politicians and businessmen don’t have any overseas account then from where did they acquire this ill-gotten wealth?
The list of number of persons holding black money in Swiss Banks unveiled by a leading newspaper is almost double those obtained by the government. The names of former Chief Minister Narayan Rane his wife Neelam Narayan Rane, son Nilesh Rane along with late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s daughter-in-law Smita Thackeray also figure in the list. The government will probe the new cases and disclosed that it is in touch with a whistle blower to get the names of all the undisclosed Indian accounts in HSBC’s Switzerland branch and other destinations.
The names of former UPA minister Preneet Kaur, former Congress MP Annu Tandon and as well as family members of the late Congress minister Vasant Sathe also appear in the list. Most of them have denied having accounts with Swiss banks.
The government will also seek proof of those account holders whose names feature in the list. “Some new names have been revealed whose veracity would be checked by authorities,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley
When journalists tried to ask Smitha Thackeray about the black money issue she refused to comment about it. She nonetheless had posed for photographs on the occasion of her son Rahul Thackeray’s wedding.
Among the several business men are top guns like Mukesh Ambani, Anil Ambani, Anand Chand Burman, Rajan Nanda, Yashovardhan Birla, Chandru Lachhmandas Raheja, Dattaraj Salgaocar, Bhadrashyam Kothari and Shravan Gupta.
Diamond traders who are part of this list include Rusell Mehta, Anoop Mehta, Saunak Parikh, Chetan Mehta, Govindbhai Kakadia and Kunal Shah.
The news daily partnered with Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and the Paris-based Le Monde newspaper to investigate the Swiss accounts and revealed what it calls Swiss Leaks, a trove of secret documents from HSBC’s Swiss private banking arm that reveals names of account holders and their balances for the year 2006-07.
The revelation is likely to bring new political debate in India and expect to widen the scope of the ongoing probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Supreme Court.
Top officials of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said that undisclosed income to the tune of Rs 3,150 crore ($508 million) has been brought to tax from among HSBC account-holders but pointed out that there were some significant gaps in the data — some 200 accounts with the Government had no balance and 211 of them were of NRIs.
“We are contacting everyone and not leaving this as a presumption. We are putting the onus of proving NRI status during the relevant period on the account-holder,” a senior CBDT official
Narayan Rane denied that neither he nor any of his family members held accounts in HSBC Geneva. He told reporters: “I would like to state clearly that neither my wife, my children nor myself have any foreign accounts or Swiss bank accounts. These allegations have come up even in the past and we have nothing to do with it.”
“There is no black (money)…There is nothing to hide, nothing to worry. (I am) following all regulations and rules,” said Goyal.
A Reliance Industries spokesperson said: “Neither Reliance Industries nor Mukesh Ambani have or had any illegitimate bank accounts anywhere in the world.”
Similarly, a spokesperson for Anil Ambani said: “Mr Ambani does not have any HSBC overseas account”.
It was year 2011, when WikiLeaks released a list of Indian black money hoarders. In the same year, Anil Harish, one of India’s best minds on tax matters, spoke at length on the impact of hacking of nearly 700 accounts, held by powerful Indians at HSBC, Geneva. The list released by WikiLeaks created uproar and it has been found that both resident and non-resident Indians are equally guilty. Charges included that of tax evasion while the hoarders chose to put away their wealth in the banks offshore. Since then, BJP and its supporters made this as an agenda against Congress and is using it as a main topic in their election campaign. After coming in power at the centre, BJP has changed it stand and has taken a U-turn on black money.
After it was exposed that more than 1000 Indian’s account is there in Swiss Bank, just day before Delhi Assembly result, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said new names of Indians with Swiss bank accounts have come up and their veracity will be checked while 60 prosecutions have already been launched. A fresh HSBC list revealed by an international body of journalists named more Indians, including big corporates and political leaders. Now question here arises, why to wait for additional names; when you have already done prosecutions of others, then take action against them. Keep it going and start a parallel investigation with the new list. There is no point; if you delay in taking action then you are giving them time to relocate their money. It’s little wonder that the financial analysts are placing their bet on the final figure of the black money. An estimated $2 trillion is sitting snug in the banks abroad, mostly in Swiss Bank. And the holders of this money, obviously billionaires, are steadily climbing the global charts of ‘influential personalities’ day by day.
BJP won with a clear majority in Lok Sabha elections 2014, promising ‘Acche Din Aane Wale Hain’. This term was banged and hammered in every advertisement even a small child relates Acche Din with Narendra Modi, without even understanding what it means. So have ‘Acche Din’ finally arrived? The best and diplomatic answer for this question would be both yes and no. As they say, a single misdeed diminishes the value of hundred golden deeds. One thing that could possibly have hit the credibility of Modi government hard was the issue of bringing back black money. And looking at the current scenario, it has precisely overshadowed the good work of Modi government. The world’s largest democracy saw a ray of hope in Modi, when told that lakh of crores of black money stashed away in foreign banks will be brought back to India. Did it happen? No. These black money holders’ names started getting leaked much before BJP government established in the centre or they made it election issue. List of Black Money holders in Swiss Bank accounts have been leaked by WikiLeaks and published on their websites.
Jaitley said that the tax department has launched 60 prosecutions from an earlier list of Indian account holders in a Swiss branch of HSBC bank and most of the names revealed in Monday’s list are known to the government. He was reacting to a story published in one of the dailies, which said that 1,195 Indian names figure in the HSBC list with a total balance of Rs. 25,420 crore, as part of an investigation by an international body of journalists. Many of the names have already been disclosed, but there are some new additions, including that of prominent corporate leaders, politicians, NRIs and others. Many of these accounts could be legitimate. Jaitley said that he had met top Swiss authorities, including Switzerland’s Finance Minister, in Davos last month and it was agreed there that admission by assessees would be considered additional evidence to seek details.
The Indian names revealed on Monday are part of a global list of account holders in HSBC’s Swiss private banking arm and their balances for the year 2006-07. They include persons from over 200 countries with total balance of over $100 billion. The 1,195 Indian names are nearly double the 628 names that figured in an earlier HSBC list that was shared by the French government with India in 2011. Modi’s election manifesto was the war that his party waged on black money. During the tenure of the UPA government, scams rolled out one after another, exposing way too many influential personalities who had made a quick buck. However, the saga of Indian politicians stacking their booty in the Swiss Bank (among other financial institutions) isn’t limited to the past decade alone. A penurious India has been struggling alteration of its image from a country that was ‘developing’ for a long time to an economic ‘super power.’ According to World Bank reports, poverty in India is waiting to reach another level, with an estimated 11.8% of total population living below the line of poverty and earning less than $1.25 per day in 2014. The only happy thing is the fact that poverty has consistently reduced over the past few years. However, if the black money heads back to the country where it belongs to, then it will be more than India’s GDP.
The largest number of foreign depositors in Swiss Bank is reportedly Indians. If this can change, the country is bound to witness prosperous days ahead. The actions taken by Narendra Modi since his cabinet took office are commendable, but at the same time questionable too. At the time when the government promised achche din, the railway fares were increased by a considerable 14%, but since then the price of petrol and diesel is on a downhill. Passing through a grim situation of geopolitical threats by China and Pakistan, add to it the ongoing period of financial crunch; Modi decided to assign the two most crucial portfolios to one man, Arun Jaitley.
The government used an olive branch in the past to 700 HSBC account holders who kept an undisclosed amount in their accounts aboard. Nearly, 100 members made amends for it while the rest resisted the process. Apart from HSBC and Swiss Bank, Liechtenstein and British Virgin Islands are also offering safe havens for black money hoarders from various countries, including India and China.
Let’s see, how long BJP manages to play with words, without any action on Black money…
Terming the first meeting of NITI Aayog’s Governing Council as “very successful”, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he sought that states should be allowed to prepare their own strategic plans and NITI should provide domain expertise and outlays.
Fadnavis also said that chief ministers of different states got a chance to witness the benefits of “co-operative federalism” during the NITI Aayog meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi.
“The first meeting of NITI Aayog has turned out to be very successful, because the chief ministers of various states got to witness the benefits of co-operative federalism. Even the CMs from different parties seemed to be agreeing with the Prime Minister’s views,” Fadnavis said.
“Earlier, the norm was that the Central government would decide policies under the Planning Commission and the states would comply with it. Today, a committee has been formed to discuss what policies are relevant and which ones should be scrapped,” he said.
Recounting the minutes of the meeting, Fadnavis said he proposed that in the transition Phase of the 11th Plan, the existing system of five-year plan should be continued, but in future a system that is formulated through strategic planning should be adopted.
“Parameters of a balanced national development should be decided and the states should be allowed to make their own strategic plan to achieve the outcome and NITI should provide domain expertise and outlays,” he said.
Block grants should be given to states under NREGA and state-level ratio of skilled and non-skilled should be allowed to be maintained, he added.
“In tune with the Prime Minister Krishi Sinchai Yojana, Maharashtra has already started aquifer-based water conservation scheme under ‘Jal Yukta Shivar’ scheme. I requested that it should be given more outlay,” Fadnavis said.
The Central Government should allocate an amount equivalent to 35 per cent of agriculture crop loan to invest into agriculture infrastructure development, he said adding that Maharashtra has an ambitious plan to provide five lakh solar agri pumps and that the Union Government should provide bigger outlay for it.
“Article 371 (2) of the Constitution has made special provision for Vidarbha and Marathawada. Centre should provide special scheme outlay for the same,” he said.
Members of the All India Bakchod Comedy Company met Bishop Agnelo Gracias, Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay and offered an unconditional apology to the entire Christian community for any offence that may have been caused to its members as a result of the AIB Knockout.
Christian organisations were irked by standup comedy group All India Bakchod (AIB) for hurting their religious sentiments through some statements and demanded action against those associated with the programme.
The Association of Concerned Catholics (AoCC) had also submitted a memorandum to Maharashtra Education and Culture Minister Vinod Tawde.
AoCC secretary Judith Monteiro said they have protested against some statements in the show pertaining to Jesus and the Church.
And now, Tanmay Bhat, Gursimran Khamba, Ashish Shakya, Rohan Joshi at AIB have apologised to them.
According to a post by Archdiocese of Bombay on Facebook, the members of the All India Bakchod Comedy Company met Bp. Agnelo Gracias and tendered an unconditional apology. Bp. Gracias, on behalf of the Archdiocese of Bombay, accepted the unconditional apology and in the spirit of understanding and reconciliation stated that the Archdiocese accepts the AIB apology and considers this matter closed.
The content of the apology letter was also shared along with the post on Monday.
The letter reads: “We, Tanmay Bhat, Gursimran Khamba, Ashish Shakya, Rohan Joshi at AIB hereby offer an unconditional apology to the entire Christian community for any offence that may have been caused to its members as a result of the AIB Knockout.
“While performing our acts, no matter the subject, we never intend to hurt anyone, though as an unfortunate consequence of the nature of our profession we sometimes do. We are sorry.”
They also urged that they have the “utmost respect for all religions and community and have never been against any community, nor do we bear any ill will of any kind towards any community.”
“We also believe and support with complete certainty the notion that every community has the right to live with dignity, honour and freedom from any form of persecution. We would also like to reiterate that the jokes at the AIB Knockout were not intended as a form of persecution or malice towards the Christian community or any other community, for that is not who we are, or what we stand for.”
The show had created a nationwide furore after a three-part edited version of the ‘Roast’; titled AIB Knockout was posted on online video-sharing platform YouTube Jan 28.
AIB Knockout was a December 2014 charity comic event where Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar and a panel of comedians “grilled” actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor on their personal and professional lives.
Dreaded underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s brother – Iqbal Kaskar, who was lodged in judicial custody was on Monday granted bail by Mumbai Sessions Court.
Kaskar was granted bail on the surity of Rs. 50,000.
A magistrate’s court had on Friday remanded him in judicial custody till February 20.
He was arrested on February 3 in connection with an extortion case registered with J J Marg police station in central Mumbai.
The police had sought further remand of Kaskar on the ground that they wanted to investigate his connections with Dawood and the latter’s involvement in the case.
However, the magistrate rejected the remand application after Kaskar’s lawyer argued that further custody was not required.
He was arrested after a complaint was filed by real estate agent Mohammed Salim Sheikh alleging that Kaskar and his men had thrashed him and demanded Rs. 3 lakh.
Kaskar and two others were booked under sections 385 (extortion), 323 (causing hurt) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal code.
Kaskar was deported to India from the United Arab Emirates in 2003 as he was wanted in a murder case and the Sara Sahara illegal construction case. However, he was acquitted in both the cases in 2007.
