Portugal health minister quits after pregnant Indian woman dies; probe ordered 2

The tragic death of a pregnant Indian woman in Portugal while being shifted between crisishit hospitals here has led to the resignation of the country’s health minister Marta Temido while authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 34-year-old Indian woman reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during an ambulance transfer from Santa Maria hospital, which had no vacancies in the neonatology service, to another hospital in the capital.

It follows a string of incidents this summer that critics blame on a staffing crisis across Portuguese natal units, the BBC reported on Wednesday. Temido had been the health minister since 2018, and is credited with steering Portugal through the Covid-19 pandemic. But on Tuesday, the government said in a statement that Temido had “realised that she no longer had the conditions to remain in office”.

Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa said the woman’s death was “the last straw” that led to Temido’s resignation, the report quoted Portugal’s Lusa news agency as saying.

“I am grateful for all the work carried out by Dr. Marta Temido, especially in the exceptional period of combating the COVID19 pandemic. The @govpt continue the ongoing reforms with a view to strengthening the SNS and improving healthcare provided to the Portuguese,” Costa, an Indian-origin leader, said in a tweet.

His remarks came after a storm of criticism over the Portuguese government’s handling of staff shortages in maternity units, by temporarily closing some of them and forcing pregnant women to undergo risky transfers between hospitals.

Local media reported that the pregnant tourist died while being moved from Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital – the largest in Portugal – because its neonatology unit was full.

Her baby was delivered in good health following an emergency caesarean section, authorities said. An investigation into the woman’s death has been launched, the report said. There have been similar incidents across Portugal in recent months – including the separate deaths of two infants whose mothers had apparently been transferred between hospitals and endured long delays, it said.

Portugal’s shortage of health staff, especially those specialising in gynaecology and obstetrics, has led to the government considering hiring from abroad.

The closure of some natal units has led to overflowing maternity wards and long wait times, with opposition parties, doctors and nurses pointing blame at the former health minister. Speaking to local outlet RTP, the chair of the Portuguese doctors association Miguel Guimaraes said Temido quit because she did not have any way of resolving the current crisis – before going on to praise her record in office.

However, Gustavo Tato Borges, the president of Portugal’s public health association, told RTP he did not expect her resignation, and was “surprised” that she had stepped down while there are “acute problems” in the health sector.

BJP leader Seema Patra is a blot on humanity

There was one horrible video on social media where a tribal woman is telling her horrific experience with BJP leader Seema Patra. She tortured her tribal domestic help to death. If this video wouldn’t surface on social media the BJP leader would have continued doing so. Finally, she was arrested by Ranchi police in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Seema Patra had fled fearing police arrest, following which Argora police in Ranchi launched a search operation for her. Sunita, who worked as domestic help, was made to clean the toilet with her tongue. This is the height of inhumanity. In my opinion, she and her husband must be tried under all appropriate sections of the law and severely punished as soon as possible. Sunita had multiple wounds throughout her body. She alleged that Seema Patra used to burn her with hot objects.

Acting on a tip-off from a government employee, the Ranchi Police had rescued the woman from Patra’s residence last week and recorded the domestic help statement on August 30 before a magistrate

A case was registered against Patra, wife of former IAS officer Maheshwar Patra, under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections of the SC-ST Act, 1989, at the Argoda police station in Ranchi. The statement of Sunita was recorded in court under Section 164 on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Jharkhand BJP suspended Seema Patra.

Central government’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign, according to her Facebook profile. The NCW said it has written to the Jharkhand police chief for a fair investigation and sought the woman’s arrest if the allegations are true. The abuse sparked outrage among the public, with people calling for Patra’s immediate arrest.

According to a post shared by The Dalit Voice, the domestic help was kept at the Patra household and tortured for eight years. She was beaten with a hot ‘Tawa’ (pan) and metal rods and was compelled to lick the floor’s urine, the Twitter page said. In a video shared in the post, the woman is seen lying on a hospital bed making a desperate attempt to utter a few words to a man speaking to her. Her teeth are broken and bruises on her body point to repeated attacks.

Seema Patra is the state convener of the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ campaign. She was a member of BJP’s women’s wing and is the wife of ex-IAS officer Maheshwar Patra. Seema Patra’s son, Ayushman, working at the state secretariat, attempted to shield the maid and he had informed his friend, Vivek Baske, about the incidents at home. Sunita finally spoke about her ordeal to Vivek and was rescued with his help. The National Commission for Women took cognizance of reports of Seema Patra harassing her domestic help in Jharkhand. Seema is now sent to 14-day police remand till September 12 by a local court, public prosecutor Pradeep Chaurasia said. Every culprit when caught by police for wrongdoing says the same thing that I am innocent. So, there is nothing new in her statement also.

Un-imaginable horrible crime by a leader and her educated IAS husband, she must be punished harshly including breaking her teeth so she realizes the pain she inflicted on her help. This is mind-boggling All BJP politicians are being exposed and arrested that too without ED or the Police. Sadly all those so-called flag bearers of BJP are silent on this incident.

No woman leader came forward to condemn the leader. Indian homes have witnessed a 120% increase in domestic workers in the decade post-liberalization. While the figure was 7,40,000 in 1991, it increased to 16.6 lakh in 2001. Today, it has become a norm for a family to depend on a maid. According to data provided by Delhi Labour Organisation, there are over five crore domestic workers in India most of whom are women. Domestic workers are seldom talked about. New Delhi being the national capital, stories of exploitation of domestic workers make headlines once in a while as a large number of women from other states arrive here to earn a livelihood and work as maids. Here in Maharashtra, you will find most of the house helps are from either Konkan or Bengal, but there are hardly any cases of brutality towards them. Looking at the Seema Patra case, the political climate and leadership show how cruel they can be not only unwelcome, but they also create a threat to women’s safety because of their social status and ethnicity.

A station master was manhandled by a mob of commuters on the Vasai-Diva railway route in Maharashtra as MEMU trains were running behind schedule, the Railway Police said on Wednesday.

Angry commuters staged a protest at Kaman Road railway station in the Palghar district on Tuesday for over 90 minutes before charging at the station master. A quick intervention by the Government Railway Police (GRP) prevented the situation from going out of control.

No arrest is made so far. Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains operate on short and medium-distance routes.

A case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging his duty and other charges, besides the Indian Railways Act on a complaint lodged by the station master, a GRP official said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday morning welcomed Lord Ganesh at ‘Varsha’, his official residence in south Mumbai.

Other political leaders including Shinde’s deputy Devendra Fadnavis and MNS chief Raj Thackeray too welcomed the deity at their homes as the ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival began.

Shinde conducted puja of the Ganesh idol with his wife Lata, son and Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde, and his grandson Rudransh.

Eknath Shinde became Maharashtra chief minister on June 30 this year after he led a rebellion against Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and toppled the Sena-NCP-Congress government led by Thackeray.

In a statement, the chief minister’s secretariat said Shinde sought the lord’s blessings for happiness and contentment of the people of the state.

Later, the Shinde family also welcomed Ganesh at their private residence in Thane.

Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis also welcomed Lord Ganesh at his official residence `Sagar’ in south Mumbai.

Talking to reporters, Fadnavis said he was happy that the festival was being celebrated in Mumbai and the state with the usual fervour, as it was celebrated before the coronavirus pandemic.

Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Ajit Pawar extended greetings to the people on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray welcomed the Lord at Shivtirth, his new residence in Dadar in central Mumbai.

Thackeray was seen clicking a photo on his mobile phone of his son Amit, daughter-in-law and grandson praying to the Lord.

Congress leader and former chief minister Ashok Chavan offered prayers to the Lord at his residence.

Ganesha Puja gaining popularity in Kali’s city

Transcending the boundaries of Mumbai, where Lord Ganesha rules, worship of the elephant-headed god has become popular in the city where mother goddess rules.

Ganesha Puja, introduced in public spaces by freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak in then Bombay province on the lines of Bengal’s Durga Puja, has now become popular in Kolkata, a metropolis whose citizens have many devotees of goddesses Kali and Durga.

After low-key celebrations in the last two years due to curbs imposed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ganesha Puja this year is being held in a grand manner here.

The demand for Ganesha idols had grown so much this time that some artisans of the city’s clay modellers hub, Kumartuli, had to turn down last-minute orders.

“Ganesha Pujas across the city and its outskirts have gone up in the last 10 years. Generally, I make only Durga idols, but this year I had to take several orders for Ganesha ‘murtis’,” master artisan Sanatan Pal said.

At Muraripukur in central Kolkata, Abhishek Das, a member of a Ganesha puja committee, said 15 friends had come together way back in 2008 to start Ganesha Chathurthi celebrations.

“When we started Ganesha Puja here, in ward number 14 of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, artisans used to make only three idols,” he said.

“Anyone visiting their workshops this year will get to see at least 30 to 40 idols of Lord Ganesha there. Many people in and around the area have started organising the puja in the last few years,” Das said.

Joydip Raha of Parnasree Pally Ganesha Pujo Committee in Behala had a similar experience to share.

Around 270 people, who would frequent a cafe, had joined hands some 10 years back to organize Ganesha Chathurthi.

“Even five years ago, two such pujas were held near our locality. Now the count has risen to eight or nine,” Raha said.

Amites Mukhopadhyay, professor of sociology at Jadavpur University, cited lack of formal employment, rising unemployment as reasons for many people to engage in the business of religion and to diversify into new Pujas.

“Festivals and pujas help break the monotony. Also, Bengalis are no longer associated just with white collar jobs. Times and mindset have also changed over the years. Many Bengalis are into different kinds of businesses, interest in the god associated with businesses has thus increased,” he added.

For Babua Bhowmik, who has been organising Ganesha Puja for many years in the city’s Ultadanga area, welcomed the new trend.

“I have been organising this puja for the last 40 years. Not many people or clubs used to celebrate it then. In a way, it is a welcome trend because clay modellers across the city, including those at Kumartuli, are getting more work, leading to more business,” Bhowmik said.

Dr Angshuman Sarkar, professor of sociology at Government Girls General Degree College in the Ekbalpur area of the city, explaining the new trend pointed out, “You must have noted that more and more people in various localities have started organising Jagadhatri Puja too.” The puja was earlier mainly celebrated in Chandannagore and Krishnanagar.

“From the sociological perspective, I think the increase in number of pujas is because people are trying to divert their minds from all kinds of problems just to feel better and to relieve themselves from daily tension, stress, anxiety, and insecurity,” the professor told PTI over phone.

The sociologist predicted that Ganesha Puja will soon have themes as seen in Durga Puja in the city.

“Various puja organisers are competing with each other – be it with idols, pandals or decorations. They want to turn their Puja into crowd-pullers,” the professor, a resident of Salt Lake, said.
