A mobile phone thief has been arrested by the Mumbai Police for allegedly demanding money from victims on his digital payments account, an official said on Monday.
The accused, Wasim Qureshi, is a history-sheeter. He recently stole four mobile phones of his co-workers in a bakery in suburban Kurla on the first day of his job, the official said.
Later, one of the co-workers managed to get Qureshi’s phone number and contacted him.
Qureshi told the victim that he would return their mobile phones once they transfer money to his digital payments account.
“The accused started calling up the victims every day asking for money. Fed up with his demand for money, one of the victims lodged an FIR. Qureshi was tracked down to Thane and nabbed. Police recovered ten mobile phone handsets from his possession,” the official said.
Speaking about his modus operandi, the official said Qureshi used to visit various commercial units in Mumbai and demand a job for survival. He then used to steal mobile phones.
He never submitted his identity proof to evade arrest. Qureshi has been booked under section 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the Indian Penal Code, V B Nagar police sub-inspector Bhausaheb Sonawane said.
Urgent action is demanded against the private travel agencies who are robbing passengers 3
According to the order of the State Transport Department, the Government has decided to allow charging only one and a half times the fare of the S.T. bus, however, private travel agencies are robbing the passengers by charging double or triple the ticket price from the devotees going to their native places for Ganeshotsav. Most of the ticket prices are openly given on the websites of private travel agencies.
In this way, despite the open financial looting of the citizens, no administrative action has been taken against them. Against this, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti’s ‘Surajya Abhiyan’, held a protest outside the booking centres of private travel agencies in Dadar (East) in Mumbai. In this movement, strict action was demanded against the private travel companies who loot the money of the devotees.
Abhishek Murukate, who complained to the State Transport department and Police against the increase in private travel agencies’ prices, Satish Kochrekar, Spokesperson of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, activists of Samiti and passengers participated in the agitation. On the occasion, the protestors were shouting slogans and holding placards in their hands, demanding immediate action against private travel agencies.
If the same type of crime is committed by these private travel agencies again in such cases even after preventive and punitive action is taken against them who loot the money of the passengers by an illegal increase in the ticket price, cases of fraud should be registered under section 406 and 420 of IPC, a separate law should be made to prevent financial extortion by private travel companies, and the boards showing the maximum rate that can be charged the places should be displayed by the Government at the places from where the buses depart. Various demands were also made in this agitation, such as providing ‘Helpline’ numbers for the convenience of citizens on the website of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation and the Motor Vehicle Department.
Former India captain Virat Kohli on Sunday gifted a signed India jersey to Pakistan Haris Rauf India after Men in Blue registered a thrilling five-wicket win over the Men in Green.
The crucial partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya helped India defeat arch-rivals Pakistan in a thrilling clash by five wickets in the second match of the Asia Cup 2022 here at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
BCCI posted a video of a star India batter gifting an India jersey to a Pakistan pacer and wrote, “”The match may be over but moments like these shine bright. A heartwarming gesture by @imVkohli as he hands over a signed jersey to Pakistan’s Haris Rauf post the #INDvPAK game.”
Coming to the match, Pakistan were bundled out for 147 in 19.4 overs. Opener Mohammed Rizwan (43) and Iftikhar Ahmed (28) were the only ones who could contribute something decent with the bat.
The pace and short-length deliveries of Bhuvneshwar Kumar (4/26), Hardik Pandya (3/25) and Arshdeep Singh (2/33) and Avesh Khan (1/19) blew away Pakistani batters and wickets fell at a regular rate.
Chasing 148, India lost KL Rahul for a duck in the very first over. After this, Virat Kohli (35) anchored the innings and formed a 49-run stand with skipper Rohit Sharma (12), who largely struggled at the other end.
Twin strikes from Mohammed Nawaz, who took Sharma and Kohli’s wickets restricted India to 3/53.
Following this, a 36-run stand between Ravindra Jadeja and Suryakumar Yadav helped move the scoreboard, before Suryakumar fell to debutant Naseem Shah for 18.
A 52-run stand between Jadeja (35) and Hardik Pandya (33*) followed, which took India close to a win and in-form Pandya finished the proceedings with a six with two balls to spare, giving India a five-wicket win.
Nawaz (3/33) and Naseem Shah (2/27) bowled really well for Pakistan, though not enough to give them a win. Pandya was adjudged as ‘Man of the Match’ for his all-round performance.
Senior Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader and Politburo member Brinda Karat has slammed Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra for organising a ‘Ram Katha’ programme at the Raj Bhavan in Jaipur on Monday.
Speaking to agencies, Karat said that the incident has raised eyebrows, as it was presided by a former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Pracharak.
“Raj Bhavan is not a temple, Raj Bhavan is considered as the temple of our country’s constitution and there is no place of religion. If you have your own private house somewhere else in Uttar Pradesh then go to UP and do whatever ‘Ram Katha’ he wants to do in his private house,” the CPI(M) leader said.
“Governor House is a government place and using religion in a government place is extremely wrong. We oppose this, it should be stopped immediately,” Karat told to agencies.
Speaking on the protests in Jharkhand, Karat expressed concern and demanded immediate action against the culprits. Huge protests erupted in Dumka, after a class 12 girl who was set ablaze by a man, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday. The accused named Shahrukh committed the crime after she refused his proposal.
“This is a very serious crime and surely the man who has done this, named Shahrukh should be immediately arrested and given the strictest punishment because the dying declaration of the girl has very clearly named him.
Karat further alleged that today’s protest by the opposition BJP in Jharkhand is not for the girl but to create communal tensions in society.
“The protest that is happening today, in Dumka is not in favour of the girl, but it is being done by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Sangh Parivar people to create communal polarization using religion. This is not for the justice for the girl, it is only there to divide society in the name of religion and we oppose it. Heinous crime happens with a girl, but it is very wrong to associate her with religion,” Karat said.
Ambar Lakda, the SP of Dumka told to agencies that a swift trial will be ensured in the case in fast track courts.
“We’ll apply at fast track court for a quick trial. People are cooperating with us. We appeal to people to maintain peace. The situation is currently under control and Section 144 has been imposed in the region,” the SP said.

In yet another pothole-linked accident, a man in Thane died on Sunday when he came under the wheels of a truck when his bike skidded due to a bad road.
The man, identified as 22-year-old Ganesh Vitthal, lost the balance of his bike while maneuvering his way on a choppy patch and was mowed down by a tanker coming from the opposite direction.
The incident happened on Diva-Agasan Road in the Thane district near Mumbai.
CCTV video showed the youth losing his balance due to a pit on the road and a tanker then mowing him down, probably killing him on the spot.
Pothole accidents remain a concern in India. The government, in December, informed the Parliament that over 3,500 road accidents occurred in the year 2020 due to potholes.

Vitthal’s death has politicized the issue of potholes with the Eknath Shinde government coming under attack over the conditions of roads
