The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) saved 17 more Bangladeshi fishermen on Sunday after rescuing 10 fishermen earlier today.

A total of 27 Bangladeshi fishermen have been rescued in three separate operations on a single day amidst extreme challenging conditions and rough seas. “@IndiaCoastGuard Ship Anmol rescued 10 Bangladeshi fishermen found in water (#BayOfBengal) today.

Search for the remaining 02 missing Bangladeshi fishermen is in progress by #ICG ships and aircraft” Indian Coast Guard tweeted yesterday.

Meanwhile, on August 18, the Indian Coast Guard launched a Chetak Helicopter from Daman and rescued 14 stranded fishermen of Fishing Boat (FB) Tulsi Devi off Valsad coast.

Earlier on Wednesday, at about 11:30 am Coast Guard Air Station Daman was tasked to render rescue assistance to stranded FB Tulsi Devi which had sailed from Krishnapur fishing harbour Valsad on August 16, Press Information Bureau (Defence Wing) read.

The increasing perilous conditions with the swell height of 5-6 meters, strong gusty winds of 20-25 knots and sea state 5 in the area precluded rescue by ship or boats in the area.

Displaying unmatched resilience, the aircraft successfully rescued all crew members of the distressed FB and safely airlifted them to Coast Guard Air Station Daman.

On arrival, a preliminary medical examination was undertaken and the fishermen were provided with first aid. All survivors were conveyed to their next of kin.

Need to completely eradicate caste system, adopt ‘zero tolerance’ for prejudice: Meira Kumar

Amid the uproar over the death of a Dalit school boy in Rajasthan after being beaten up by a teacher, senior Congress leader Meira Kumar on Sunday stressed on completely eradicating the “illness” of caste system and adopting a “zero tolerance” approach against prejudice.

In an interview with agencies, the former Union minister also said one should not get into which particular regime or political party is responsible in the wake of incidents of atrocities on the basis of caste as it takes the focus away from the main question that the caste system must be abolished.

The former Lok Sabha speaker asserted that over the years the caste system has neither been diluted nor has been eradicated. Her remarks come days after Indra Kumar (9) was beaten up by a teacher allegedly for touching a drinking water pot at a school in Rajasthan’s Jalore district on July 20.

He died during treatment in Ahmedabad earlier this month. The accused, Chail Singh, has been arrested.

The Congress government in Rajasthan is facing heat over the death of the Dalit school boy. Asked if there has been lacuna on the part of the Congress government on the front of Dalit atrocities, Kumar said, “This is something everyone asks me. It is not that I am defending anybody or accusing anybody. I just want to say that yes the political class is responsible to some extent but the issue is social. Politics is a reflection of society.” “To say that this particular regime is responsible, this particular party is responsible and that it has happened in this state, these are the statistics, in other states statistics are different because the party there is different, we should not really get into all this because then it diverts attention from the main issue,” she said. When people start talking about political angles then it dilutes the issue, said Kumar.

Every time an atrocity takes place eventually it gets entangled into whose fault it is, the former minister of social justice and empowerment said. Talking about ways to move forward on eradicating the caste system, Kumar said there is a need for social will. “Society must come forward. This is a problem rooted in religion so what are the religious leaders saying…the young people, they always want change, they should come forward. Women, they are mothers, they have a major role in shaping the attitude of the child right from the moment the child is born,” she said.

The Congress leader called for talking about “zero prejudice”. Prejudice on the basis of caste, religion, skin colour, economic background needs to be done away with, said Kumar who had recently tweeted and recalled that 100 years ago her father Babu Jagjivan Ram was prohibited from drinking water in school from the pitcher meant for Savarna Hindus.

“There are so many prejudices. Right from childhood we should start, and have a slogan ‘zero prejudice’ like we have zero tolerance for terrorism. I have not heard anyone say, ‘zero tolerance for any kind of prejudice’,” the 77-year-old leader said.

Atrocities related to caste often lead to the “crippling of the soul”, she said. Kumar said incidents of physical harm were just symptoms while the “illness” was the caste system.

She said caste system is an illness and unless that goes, atrocities cannot stop. Attention has to be on completely eradicating the caste system, she added.

Asked about the coming to power of the Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar headed by JD(U)’s Nitish Kumar after he dumped the BJP to join hands with the RJD, the Congress and other parties, Meira Kumar said it was a “welcome” development and a “positive sign”.

“I hope this is followed in other states also,” the former MP from Bihar’s Sasaram said. On suggestions from certain quarters that the Congress had gotten a raw deal with two ministerial berths in the Bihar government, she said, “I think we should examine the positive aspects of it. Be positive about it.”

On whether the formation of the Mahagathbandhan government holds out hope for 2024 general elections, Kumar said, “Yes. But one cannot be very categorical, we have to build on it. Give it time to strengthen it, nurture it, and then it will spread all over.” Asked if the Congress should be the fulcrum of an Opposition alliance to take on the BJP in 2024 general elections, she answered in the affirmative.

To a question on the buzz that Bihar Chief Minister Kumar could emerge as a prime ministerial candidate, the Congress leader said, “I have heard this from various quarters, let us see who is there, the Opposition has a number of stalwarts, at an appropriate time the parties will decide.”

She also accused the Centre of indulging in “vendetta politics” with the Enforcement Directorate questioning a host of Opposition leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

“When you are in the Opposition, there are so many charges against you, and so many who have shifted their loyalties from the Congress to the ruling party, suddenly they have no charges against them. We have seen this happening,” she said.

The BJP on Sunday alleged Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is the ”kingpin” of the excise policy ”scam” and said handcuffs are getting close to him as nodes of corruption are being unravelled.

Addressing a press conference here, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia alleged Kejriwal was busy indulging in corruption when Covid-affected people needed his help.

Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta, who also addressed the press conference, said, ”Delhi’s excise policy has proved to be a corrupt one. Arvind Kejriwal is the kingpin of this entire scam.” Bhatia said when it was time to help Covid-affected people, Kejriwal was busy indulging in corruption by signing the excise policy.

”Roots of the excise policy ‘scam’ lead to the doorstep of corrupt Kejriwal. No one is above law and no corrupt person will be spared,” he said.

On the AAP’s claim that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will be a direct fight between Kejriwal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP spokesperson said everyone knows what happened in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa polls.

The public will give the AAP a reply, he said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday raided 31 locations, including Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s residence, in connection with the irregularities in the Delhi government’s Excise Policy 2021-22.

What did rebel Sena MLAs achieve by backstabbing us? Ex-Maha minister Aaditya Thackeray

Shiv Sena MLA and former Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray has sought to know what did the rebel legislators achieve by “backstabbing” the party leadership when it supported them in every possible way.

He made the remarks on Saturday at a public rally in Jalgaon, the Assembly constituency of rebel Sena leader and present state minister Gulabrao Patil.

In June this year, Shiv Sena MLA Eknath Shinde and 39 other legislators revolted against the party leadership, leading to the collapse of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, which comprised the Sena, NCP and Congress. Shinde was sworn in as the chief minister on June 30 along with BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy. CM Shinde recently expanded his cabinet, inducting nine ministers each from the Sena and the BJP.

“We gave them tickets, made efforts to get them elected and supported them in every possible way. Why did they backstab us? What did they achieve by being traitors?” Aaditya Thackeray asked. “Whatever they have got, they got it for themselves. They have not given anything back to the people,” claimed the MLA, who is the son of former CM Uddhav Thackeray.

In the Shinde-led ministry, Gulabrao Patil has retained charge of the water supply and sanitation department, which he held in the previous MVA government.

AIIMS Panel gives clean sheet to Apollo Hospital over late TN CM Jayalalithaa’s death

JAYALALITHA

A report by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ panel of doctors has asserted that the treatment provided to late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was as per “correct medical practice and no errors” have been found in the care provided.

This clean chit provided relief for Apollo Hospital where Jayalalithaa was admitted. With direction from the Supreme Court, the AIIMS panel was formed to assist Arumughaswamy Commission.

The panel found all the final diagnosis and timeline of events of Jayalalithaa’s health was fully observed and also agreed with Apollo’s treatment and diagnosis.

After the demise of Jayalalithaa in December 2016, full-scale politics erupted over the cause of her death and the medical procedures followed during her hospitalisation.

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister O. Pannerselvam had requested a probe over her death which led to the formation of the Arumughaswamy Commission.

Arumughaswamy Commission commenced its investigation in November 2017 with many hearings of close aides of Jayalalithaa and doctors who provided treatment, then Tamil Nadu Health Minister Vijayabhakar, then Health Secretary Radhakrishnan, then Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu and AIADMK senior leader O. Pannerselvam.

Over 157 witnesses in relation to Jayalalithaa have appeared before Arumughaswamy Commission and have put forward their points of view.

Meanwhile, in 2019, Apollo Hospital moved to Madras High Court seeking an interim stay on proceedings of the probe panel relating to the medical treatment given to former Jayalalitha.

The plea claimed that the probe panel has gone beyond the scope of its terms and references and behaved in a partial manner to fasten liability on Apollo Hospitals.

Whereas Madras High Court rejected Apollo Hospital’s plea to objections to the enquiry commission. Following this Apollo appealed to Supreme Court against the Madras High Court order where the apex court ordered AIIMS to set up a medical board to assist Arumughaswamy Commission to understand the medical treatment provided to Jayalalithaa.

Based on the medical records, a final diagnosis was made of Bacteremia and Septic shock with a respiratory infection. There was also evidence of heart failure.

She had uncontrolled diabetes at admission which was treated. There was also a history of hypertension, hyperthyroid, asthmatic, irritable bowel syndrome and atopic dermatitis and the medical panel at AIIMS has said that it “agrees with the final diagnosis”.

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia states BJP will receive “Look Out Circular” from people after 2024 general election

Manish Sisodia,Delhi

Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia on Sunday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the CBI Look Out Circular against him and said that after the 2024 general election the people will give a “Look Out Circular” to the BJP.

“It is unfortunate that the PM keeps thinking against whom should a CBI ‘Look Out Circular’ be issued today,” he said in a conversation with ANI. Hinting toward the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he further asserted that the public will give a “Look Out Circular” to the BJP.

“Today, the country is looking for a leader who can give solutions to inflation, unemployment, and work to make India number one. What can they achieve by making Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia zero? The country needs a Prime Minister who thinks about Health and Education, the public will give a ‘look out notice’ to them in 2024 after asking about their huge promises,” he said.

He further claimed that the condition of India is the same as it was 75 years ago.

“They do not understand that the country is seeking solutions to unemployment. Where Arvind Kejriwal is finding out ways to make India number one, they (PM Modi) are thinking about the people to whose house they can send CBI and ED for conducting raids.”

Earlier in the day, he took to Twitter to react to the LOC issued against him and termed the CBI raids a “gimmick”. “

All the raids issued by you have failed, the foul play of not even a single penny has been found.

Now, you have issued a Look Out Circular that Manish Sisodia is absconding, what is this gimmick, Modi Ji? I am openly roaming in Delhi, tell me where do I need to come?” Sisodia tweeted attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Hindi.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has barred the travel movement of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and 12 people for being allegedly involved in the Delhi Excise Policy Scam by issuing a Look Out Circular in their name.

The CBI had issued the Look Out Circular against all the accused, which is used by the authorities to check if the person travelling abroad is ‘wanted’ by the police or any agency.

It can be used in immigration checks at international borders. The LOC is issued to ensure that a person absconding or wanted by law enforcement agencies is not able to leave the country.

It is mostly used at immigration checkpoints by the immigration branch at international airports and seaports.

During the raid of CBI in Delhi at 31 locations including seven states, two accused were not found during the raid, so the agency opened LOC with immediate effect against the 13 accused. “CBI issues a Look Out Circular (LOC) against 13 accused in Delhi excise police case including deputy chief Minister Manish Sisodia,” an agency

CBI had registered an FIR against Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and 14 others in connection with alleged irregularities in the excise policy which was implemented in November last year.

On Saturday the CBI summoned several accused for questioning in the corruption case in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy.

An agency official told, “the agency was probing documents seized during raids at 31 places, including the residence of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.”

The investigative agency is currently probing the process of verification of bank transactions along with documents related to the case and electronic gadgets which were seized during the raids.

Excise officials, liquor company executives, dealers along with unknown public servants and private persons have also been booked in the case.

The FIR alleged that Sisodia, Arva Gopi Krishna, Anand Tiwari and Pankaj Bhatnagar, were instrumental in recommending and taking decisions pertaining to excise policy for the year 2021-22 “without the approval of competent authority with an intention to extend undue favours to the licencees post tender”.

The CBI on Friday conducted a raid at the house of Minister Manish Sisodia in connection with the alleged corruption in the implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy. CBI registered a case against Manish Sisodia, Deputy Chief Minister, GNCTD of Delhi and others including Arva Gopi Krishna, the then Commissioner (Excise), GNCTD of Delhi, Anand Tiwari, the then Deputy Commissioner (Excise), GNCTD of Delhi, Pankaj Bhatnagar, then Assistant Commissioner (Excise), GNCTD of Delhi and 10 liquor licensees, their associates and unknown others on a reference from Ministry of Home Affairs.

It was alleged that irregularities were committed including modifications in the Excise Policy and undue favours were extended to the license holders including waiver or reduction in licence fee, an extension of L-1 license without approval etc.

It was further alleged that illegal gains on the count of these acts were diverted to concerned public servants by private parties and making false entries in their books of accounts.
