HC refers Jiah Khan’s suspected suicide case to police chief

jiah-khanThe Bombay High Court asked late actor Jiah Khan’s mother Rabia Khan to approach the Mumbai police commissioner with her grievances regarding the probe into the death of her daughter.

Rabia has alleged that Jiah was murdered and did not commit suicide as claimed by police.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Rabia, demanding a probe by Special Investigating Team or CBI into the actor’s death as she produced forensic and medical evidence to indicate that it was a case of murder.

“You may approach the Police Commissioner with all your grievances and provide whatever evidence you may have in this regard”, said the bench headed by Justice Naresh Patil while deferring the matter to May 8.

The suggestion to go before the police chief was given by public prosecutor Purnima Kantharia who vehemently denied the allegations of the petitioner that probe was improper and that an attempt was made by police to shield the accused.

Police had filed a chargesheet in the trial court naming Suraj Pancholi, son of Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi, as an accused for abetting suicide of Jiah.

According to prosecution, both were into an intense relationship which was later severed.

Mahesh Jethmalani, counsel for Rabia, said his client wanted to know the truth and the cause of her daughter’s death. She had procured evidence from private forensic experts which showed that Jiah did not take her life by hanging from the fan as claimed in the investigation but was murdered, he said.

Jethmalani also said that they were prepared to move the police commissioner with these grievances. He, however, asked for histopathology report and videography report of Jiah’s postmortem which the police had not given them.

However, the judges opined that the Commissioner of Police may decide on this plea and asked the petitioner to come back to the court in case she was not satisfied with the response of the police establishment.

Congress only agenda is to stop me, says Narendra Modi

Ridiculing the Congress and its allies for fearing him, BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi said that the ruling coalition is more concerned about stopping him than strategising to win the Lok Sabha election.

Addressing a rally of the Shiv Sena-BJP-RPI combine, Modi said that the Congress has a singular agenda of “Modi roko” (stop Modi).

“They tremble when they hear Modi’s name, since they know their place after May 16,” he said.

Targeting the UPA government as “Ma bete ki sarkar (government of mother and son)”, Modi said the government shamelessly failed to deliver on its “slum free” and “employment” promises.

“The government has no respect for democratic institutions. Such is the arrogance that the family feels it is not answerable to anyone. The character of the Congress is to only fool the people,” the Gujarat chief minister said.

Modi said that 232 constituencies have voted so far and it is clear that the UPA government is on its way out.

“Polling so far has laid the foundation stone of the next government. It is the duty of those going to vote in the next phase to ensure a strong and stable government,” he said and urged people to see to it that the Congress-NCP never opened their account in the state.

“You give us a mandate for a strong government and we will ensure you a strong nation,” Modi said.

Sharing the stage with Modi for the first time, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray lauded the Gujarat chief minister as a “strong and decisive leader”.

Man arrested for allegedly raping minor girl

A 20-year-old villager was arrested in Thane for allegedly raping a teenage girl for three days under the pretext of marrying her, district rural police said.

According to PSI A V Salunke of Wada police station, the accused Nagesh M Wagh was arrested on Sunday night and was charged under sections 376,363, 366-A and also sections 6 and 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 following a complaint by the girl.

The incident took place on April 17 when the 17-year-old girl was on her way to work in Kandivali that Wagh, who lives in the same locality offered her lift on his motorbike and took her to an isolated place.

He then allegedly raped the girl repeatedly over the next three days and then abandoned her, following which she approached the cops.

Two members of Pujari gang held; machine gun, pistol recovered

Three days before the Lok Sabha polls in the city, two men working as bouncers at a night club in a five-star hotel, allegedly associated with gangster Ravi Pujari gang, were arrested and a sophisticated carbine machine gun and a pistol were recovered from them, police said.

Acting on a tip-off that Pujari gang members were to deliver firearms to their aide in Kandivali, a trap was laid last evening when two accused – Deepak Padwal (27) and Amol Sawant (29) – were found moving suspiciously in the area, police said.

“The two were arrested by the Anti Extortion Cell and firearms recovered from them. A carbine machine gun, a pistol, three magazines and 13 live rounds were seized from the duo, who reached Kandivali to hand over the consignment,” Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Sadanand Date said.

Although the seizure assumed significance ahead of the Lok Sabha polls to be held in the city on Thursday, the crime branch chief clarified it had nothing to do with elections.

“The two carriers, who work as bouncers with a popular night club in a five star hotel in Mumbai suburbs, wanted to deliver the firearms to their associate. There was no specific operation by these two linking to the elections,” Date said.

Investigators were alarmed to discover the carbine machine gun with the two accused as this weapon is usually used by armed forces, police said.

According to police sources, the two were given these firearms by their associate Kamal Singh Rajput (32), a bouncer in the same night club, who had been arrested from the city by Mangalore police last week in connection with a firing case in their jurisdiction.

Rajput and his colleague Dattatray Waghare had been arrested by Mangalore police from Mumbai with the help of the city crime branch.

“Padwal and Sawant were produced before a court which remanded them in police custody till April 25. We suspect that the two may have the knowledge about the places where some more firearms are concealed.

No foolproof method to avoid errors in electoral rolls: CEO

Problems arising out of deletions in electoral rolls is inevitable as there is no foolproof measure against errors, Chief Electoral Officer Maharashtra Nitin Gadre said.

“The exercise of deletions was concluded in August 2013 and names of as many as 50 lakh people were deleted. Through lot of publicity, we gave time to people to correct mistakes if any in the voter rolls.

“CDs were given to all political parties and the deleted list was published on the website. Details of the proposed deletions were also circulated to political parties. There was no secrecy in the deletions,” Gadre said.

He was responding to criticism of incidents where several people from Pune found their names were missing from the voter lists and protests were staged outside the collector’s office.

After August 2013, 40 lakh new voters were added in the summary revision. “Another 16 lakh were added after January 31, 2014 including 6.8 lakh after March nine this year. Hence, a total of 56 lakh voters have been added which includes 23 lakh first time voters,” he said.

Gadre said in Pune, 6.22 lakh names were deleted out of which 1,400 complained that their names have been mistakenly deleted.

“The scrutiny of the names is in progress and the Election Commission of India will take an appropriate decision in this regard,” he said.

In Mumbai, he said 6.5 lakh names have been deleted during revision of electoral rolls. “So far, we have not received official complaints from citizens that their names have been mistakenly deleted,” Gadre said.

He said for the first time, a massive deletion exercise was undertaken last year. We agree it is not foolproof because about 60,000 people were in the exercise to scrutinise electoral roll of eight crore. A person might not be found in the residence during one or two visits of the officials, neighbours might not know and the person may turn up after two months,” he added.

Themes of displacement, dislocation in contemporary Indian literature

Contemporary Indian writing in English upholds the themes of diaspora, dislocation, alienation, loneliness, caste and identity crisis. Written in the post colonialism scenario, it revolves around situations, problems of identity and dislocation of migrants. Sometimes it is written against the backdrop of partition, how generations later move on, the political scenario which threaten their existence, their reactions and actions as a result of it and their journey of emotional upheavals, old wounds which become a part of their memories and the choices they make and the personality they exhibit as a result of it. The books do not necessarily depict a journey of their psychological healing but it just presents a journey, physical, mental or emotional of such a character in the practical world.

JhumpaLahiri’s ‘Lowland’ deals with a similar context. There is an atmosphere of political unrest with Naxalism threatening the peace and security of Kolkata. The story begins with the life of two intelligent brothers, one of who gets attracted to the Naxalite movement and as a result, loses his life for the same. The other brother, who migrates to US, takes his brother’s pregnant widow with him to give her a new life. However, he feels a sense of loneliness and displacement. He still cannot forget the’ Lowland’, his brother or his parents. His wife Bela gives birth to a girl but her presence reminds her of her dead husband, her painful past, the memory of which she is trying to erase and her marriage to his brother, which was her only escape route from the clutches of her in laws and the society. Thus these themes have been brought out well in her book.

Her previous book ’Namesake’ also deals with the theme of identity crisis. Gogol, a kid born to Indian parents settled abroad struggles to survive with his name. While his parents struggle to retain their ‘Indianness,’ he feels a sense of dislocation.

Indianness is a cultural construct. It creates in a being a sense of rootedness, it becomes a part of their identity. To go to another country an embrace their culture creates a sense of uprootedness, a sense of displacement which creates loneliness. Such cultural diversities are frequently experienced by people due to the large population of migrants comprising students and workers to the West. These find way in literature and films as this is today’s reality. Thus contemporary Indian writing In English gives a sneak peek into the lives of modern Indians.

Congress ne desh ki Gadi aise gehre khadde mein dala hai ki mujhe bahut log chahiye ise bahar nikalne ke liye, (Congress has put the nation in such a deep trench that I need support of more people to bring it out),” he added.

Modi also came down heavily on the Congress chief, Sonia Gandhi and asked the gathering, “Do you want a government in Delhi which runs with the oxygen provided by the mother and the son?”

Further attacking Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, Modi said, “He can’t take care of Amethi, how he can run the country. Don’t you need a strong government at the Centre?”

The Gujarat Chief Minister also compared Rahul Gandhi’s much-publicised visits to the houses of Dalits and poor with tourists visiting the Taj Mahal in UP.

In a stern warning to corrupt leaders, Modi said, “I want a Parliament free from criminals. I won’t spare a single convicted politician.”

“Be it BJP, NDA or any other party, no one will be spared. Those who have committed crimes must be punished, “Modi thundered at the rally.

Amid chants of ‘Modi’ ‘Modi’, the Gujarat Chief Minister said, “If we form the government, I will make sure criminals do not enter Parliament, even if they’re from BJP or NDA, thorough probe and action will be taken against them.”

The BJP’s PM nominee said that he is not bothered about the safety of his life and victory and defeat of his party in these elections but whatever happens he will never compromise with his principles.

“I am not bothered if I win or lose. I will never compromise with my principles. I will make committees to look into criminal cases of people,” Modi said.

Modi will be seeking support for the yesteryear “dream girl” at two places in Mathura and will also address a rally for Rajveer Singh, son of former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh at Etah, SP Singh Baghel (Firozabad).

Firozabad is a high stakes seat for the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) as Akshay Pratap Singh, son of senior party leader Ram Gopal Yadav is the party candidate from here.

Akhsay is the cousin of UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and nephew of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. The ruling party has pulled all stops to ensure his victory.

1984 riots: Akali Dal workers protest against Amarinder Singh’s clean chit to Tytler

Akali Dal workers on Monday held a massive protest outside the Congress headquarters in Delhi over a statement made by former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh with regards to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The Akali workers were protesting against a clean chit given by Singh to Jagdish Tytler —an accused in the case.

A protester told reporters, “Our protest is against the clean-chit given to Jagdish Tytler by Amarinder Singh. We feel Singh did it at the behest of Sonia Gandhi.”

Police had to use water cannons to bring the rioting crowd under control.

Congress wants Modi questioned in encounter case

Firing a fresh salvo at BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, on Monday, the Congress took on the CBI for not questioning the Gujarat CM in Tulsiram Prajapati alleged fake encounter case.

Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal claimed that CBI had strong circumstantial evidence against the Gujarat CM’s office in the Tulsi Prajapati encounter case but the agency had not taken any action in the case. The former union law minister also claimed that Modi’s close aide Amit Shah is an accused in three murder cases.

Sibal said that call records show that a OSD in CM’s office, Parag Shah, was in constant touch with suspend IPS officers DG Vanzara and Rajkumar Pandian and questioned the CBI’s inaction in taking the lead forward. Shah was OSD in Modi’s office between 2003-2008.
When a scribe pointed out that the CBI reports the union home ministry, Sibal snapped back: “The CBI is not in our pocket, it is an independent agency, why didn’t CBI interrogate Parag Shah in the last 8 years?”

Narendra Modi’s office was fully aware of the encounter that happened with respect to Tulsiram Prajapati, he claimed.

Targeting the CBI, Sibal said Parag Shah should have been arrested and Narendra Modi questioned.

Sibal also made serious charges against BJP general secretary and UP in-charge Amit Shah by claiming that he was an accused in three murder cases.

Taunting Modi, Sibal said Amith Shah, an accused in murder cases is leading Modi’s campaign; Modi’s stand on criminal politicians is laughable.

Tulsiram Prajapati was an underworld associate of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and was a witness of Shiekh’s alleged fake encounter in 2005. Prajapati was also gunned down a year later by the police.
