Rushdie, who received death threats from Iran due to his book ‘The Satanic Verses’, was “stabbed” at least once in the neck and once in the abdomen onstage at a lecture in western New York state on Friday morning.

Ashwini Vaishnaw inspects new Vande Bharat train at Integral Coach Factory 9

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday inspected the new Vande Bharat train at Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.

The inspection comes ahead of the probable launch of two more Vande Bharat semihigh speed trains that are expected to come up by August this year besides the two which are already operational in the country, said sources.

The trains, being manufactured by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, are in the final stages. Sources said that the routes of these two newly manufactured Vande Bharat trains are yet to be decided, which would be done after getting NOC (No Objection Certificate) from different departments.

It is notable that this is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement on Independence Day last year that 75 new Vande Bharat trains would come upon the occasion of the completion of the country’s 75 years of independence, connecting 75 big towns across the country

The Railway Ministry prepared a plan for the accomplishment of the target and handed over the responsibility to Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. Interestingly, the upcoming Vande Bharat trains are being promised to be more advanced than the two already operational.

According to sources, the new trains will have automatic fire sensors, CCTV cameras and GPS systems to make travelling safer and more comfortable. The higher speed of these trains are up to 180 Km/hour.

ICF has set a target of manufacturing 75 Vande Bharat trains by August 2023. Travelling in the new trains would be more comfortable because of the lighter coaches than the previous trains. The coaches are made of stainless steel.

Due to less weight, the passengers would feel extra comfortable even at high speed. Also, there are automatic gates operated by the pilot. The windows are wide, there is more space for the luggage. The toilet installed will be advanced.

Most of the parts of the trains are “Made in India” except for a few small parts, said sources. For the safety of the passengers, ‘Kavach’ technology is being installed in all new trains, so that automatic breaks could be applied in case any train is coming on the same track.

RSS changes display picture of its social media handles to tricolour

Faced with criticism over not featuring the national flag on its social media, ahead of the 75th Independence Day, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Saturday uploaded a picture of the tricolour as its display picture (DP) on its Twitter, Facebook and other social media accounts.

“Celebrate the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence. Hoist the tricolour at every house. Raise national self-respect,” Sangh said in a Twitter post even as the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign under the aegis of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to encourage people to bring the Tiranga home and to hoist it to mark the 75th year of India’s independence kicked off today.

Sangh has already extended its support to the Centre’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ and the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ programmes.

The Congress party had launched an attack on RSS for not “hoisting the national flag” at its headquarters.

The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign initiated as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ to commemorate India’s 75th anniversary of Independence will run till August 15.

The Central government has urged people to hoist or display the tricolour in their homes from August 13 to 15 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.

A citizen, a private organization or an educational institution may hoist or display the National Flag on all days and occasions. There is no restriction on the timing of flag display.

The government has amended the Flag Code of India to allow the tricolour to be displayed in the open and on individual houses or buildings day and night.

The Flag Code of India was earlier amended in December last year allowing the use of polyester, apart from cotton, wool, silk and khadi for making hand-spun, hand-woven and machine-made flags.

‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence and the glorious history of India’s people, culture and achievements.

The programme envisages inspiring Indians everywhere to hoist the national flag at their homes. The aim of the programme is to make the relationship with the national flag a more personal one rather than just keeping it formal or institutional.

The idea behind the initiative is to invoke the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of the people and promote awareness about the tricolour.

Explosives to demolish Supertech’s twin 40-storey towers of builder Supertech in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida began to be positioned in place on Saturday ahead of the tower, for its demolition on August 28.

Vans carrying the explosives were seen arriving at the site today. As per the information, the structure will be rigged with explosives that weigh 325 kilograms, which will be towed with the Super Power 90 (25X200mm).

It will comprise 10,990 Non-Electronic Detonators, four electronic detonators, and a solar cord of 63,300 metres. The Supreme Court has given a go-ahead for the rigging of the twin towers with explosives.

The exercise was supposed to start on August 21 but the court accepted the Noida Authority’s request and extended the date of the demolition to August 28. The twin towers are set to be razed over grave violations of building norms.

The Supreme Court had said that it was a result of “nefarious complicity” between the Noida Authority and Supertech and ordered that the company shall carry out the demolition at its own expense under the supervision of the Noida Authority and an expert body like the Central Building Research Institute.

The order had come on a batch of petitions filed by homebuyers for and against the April 11, 2014 verdict of the Allahabad High Court, which had razing of the two buildings within four months and the refund of money to apartment buyers.

The Supreme Court has said that the date of demolition may be confirmed as August 28, with a “bandwidth of seven days” between August 29 to September 4, to take into account any marginal delay on account of technical reasons or weather conditions.
