AAP to seek disqualification of BJP leader Gopinath Munde

The Aam Aadmi Party unit of Maharashtra is expected to file a complaint with the Election Commission seeking disqualification of BJP leader Gopinath Munde.

This comes after Munde’s estranged nephew, MLC Dhananjay Munde alleged that he was asked to arrange one lakh bogus votes for his uncle during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. He had then facilitated bogus voting in Beed district.

Munde’s nephew is now a member of the Shawrad Pawar-led NCP.

NCP expels Vijay Kumar Gavit after daughter gets BJP Lok Sabha poll ticket

NCP expelled former Maharashtra medical education minister Vijay Kumar Gavit from the party.

Gavit’s daughter is the BJP candidate from Nandurbar. The announcement was made by party president Bhaskar Jadhav.

“Gavit has been expelled from the party,” said Jadhav.

The leader was removed from the Cabinet last week after his daughter Heena was made the BJP candidate from Nandurbar against Congress veteran Manikrao Gavit.

ACB arrests city BJP corporator’s wife for accepting bribes

The city civic body corporator’s wife, his housemaid and a junior engineer were arrested, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 28,000 on two different occasions, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) said.

BJP corporator Mahant Choube’s wife Urmila and his house maid Geeta Yadav, as well as junior engineer Anand Rai were apprehended from Choube’s house at Antop Hill in central Mumbai, an ACB official said.

According to the police, the complainant had built a shanty at Wadala area. The civic body’s ‘F-North’ ward junior engineer Rai visited the site and demanded a bribe of Rs 8000, alleging that the structure was “illegal” and he would not initiate any “action”, if the amount was paid.

The complainant paid Rs 8000, but after a few days, the engineer approached him once again, demanded Rs 10,000 as a bribe and asked him to meet corporator Mahant Choube too.

On March 20, the complainant met Mahant, who also sought Rs 20,000 to refrain from initiating any action against the structure, the police said.

As the victim did not wish to shell out more money, he complained to the ACB. The police asked the complainant to visit the corporator’s house with money as per Mahant’s directions.

Today, the complainant went to Mahant’s house, where the corporator’s wife Urmila asked him to hand over Rs 20,000 to their maid Geeta at a time when engineer Rai also visited the house, after which the ACB arrested them for accepting bribes.

The corporator is still at large, the police said, adding that further investigation is on.

File report on giving gadgets to handicapped staff: HC

The Bombay High Court asked Maharashtra government to file an interim report by April 7 on steps taken by it to provide gadgets and devices to handicapped employees working in state-run establishments.

Hearing a PIL, the bench, headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah, also asked the state to issue directions to civil surgeons in hospitals to issue fitness certificate before May 31 to 2400 handicapped state government employees who were awaiting driving licences.

Government pleader G W Mattos said physically-handicapped persons are asking for ‘side cars’ to be attached to their two wheelers so that they could balance the vehicle while driving. However, RTOs were not granting them licence for want of fitness certificates from civil surgeons.

The government also said there were 18,000 handicapped persons with various disabilities employed by it.

Camps are being organised for various handicapped employees from time to time. However, they have been demanding gadgets required by them. Of the 8254 persons who had asked for gadgets, 4151 were given supplies while orders were placed for another 1000.

However, the court expressed its displeasure saying only half of the handicapped, numbering about 4000, were given gadgets and order for 1000 new gadgets was placed when in fact another 4000 were expecting to get supply.

The pleader said orders were placed only for 1000 gadgets because of fluctuations in the price of dollar as these articles were imported.

However, the court said the price fluctuation of dollar was a permanent feature and this should not be the reason for shortfall in purchase orders.

The matter arose from a PIL filed by Neelima Surve, a visually-impaired person who had got a job in Chetna College in suburban Bandra. She was removed from job but was reinstated after the court intervened. Later, the scope of this PIL was expanded to include all handicapped persons working in government jobs who were denied facilities.

Earlier, the court wanted to know whether the state had adopted guidelines framed by the Centre with regard to recruitment of disabled people or if it had prepared its own.

Mahila Congress forms teams for door-to-door campaigning

The women’s wing of Congress in Maharashtra has formed a team of ten workers in each of the Lok Sabha constituency the party is contesting for door-to- door campaigning and reach out to maximum voters.

“The ten-member team includes local Corporators or other elected representatives of Congress and NCP (party’s ally) and family members of the candidate,” Maharashtra Mahila Congress chief Kamal Vyavhare said.

Congress is contesting 27 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra.

There are 442 booth-level committees of the state Mahila Congress and every village has one female Congress worker. There are 1.28 lakh women from gram panchayat to legislature level from the Congress party.

Vani Rao, newly-elected General Secretary in charge of the State Mahila Congress, said the cell in Maharashtra had good booth level presence.

Efforts are on to rope in NGOs so that more and more social issues can be taken up at the party level, she said.

Rao, who hails from Chhattisgarh, said of the 11 Lok Sabha seats in the tribal-dominated State, four have been given to women. “As compared to other parties, women in Congress get more opportunities.”

Rao, who is Mayor of Bilaspur, said BJP had failed to provide security to women in Chhattisgarh, where it is in power.

“Young tribal girls have been sexually assaulted. There are no toilets in ashrams meant for girls in tribal areas. BJP cannot claim to have interests of women in mind,” she said.

A new party emerging as BJP(I) Independent

Training his guns on BJP president Rajnath Singh who said that the leader’s services will be utilised appropriately, Jaswant Singh had snapped, “I am not a piece of furniture. The choice of the adjective ‘adjust’ itself is indicative of the mentality. You cannot adjust with principles and it is insulting”. He made his move clear and walked out of the party. BJP prefers conspirators over their own pillars of strength. ‘A party with a difference’ not expected to go the way its arch rival ‘grand old party’ has been going. Suitable alternate party people ever trusted is AAP, initially they did take high moral standw but recent ticket distribution has shown that they are also no different from other parties. Politics is just politics – parties are desperate only to raise head count over nurturing intellect.

Challenging the BJP over ticket denial, Jaswant Singh filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate from Barmer Lok Sabha seat. The 76-year-old leader, who was escorted by his supporters, filed the nomination papers in four sets in the collector’s office. There are many leaders hurt in BJP; many were denied tickets to please outsiders. He decided to contest the Lok Sabha elections as an independent after the BJP fielded former Congress MLA Sonaram Chowdhry, who last week joined BJP from the Barmer seat. Singh’s earlier three terms in Lok Sabha have been from Jodhpur, Chittorgarh (Rajasthan) and Darjeeling (West Bengal). He has been demanding a party ticket from his home constituency of Barmer, saying this will be his last election. He represented the Darjeeling constituency in the outgoing Lok Sabha, from where the party has nominated former Rajya Sabha member S.S. Ahluwalia.

Another BJP leader, distressed over being denied a ticket, former Union Minister and vice president of BJP Kisan Morcha Subhash Maharia also decided to contest as an Independent from Sikar constituency in Rajasthan. His announcement comes close to party veteran Jaswant Singh’s decision to fight as an independent from Barmer after being denied a party ticket.

Some critics of Jaswant say, the present BJP did a right thing in refuting ticket to Jaswant, as he and Vajpayee had jointly taken the decision to release Maulana Masood Azhar and take him in a royal way to the place of the hijacked passenger aircraft. Especially Jaswant, being an ex- service man, should not have escorted the terrorist who till today is troubling India with the help of Pakistan. But that time going to Pakistan and appealing for peace making was the dire need of the hour. However, it is wrong that BJP is abusing its own leaders and welcoming all sorts of goons from other party rebellions and rewarding them with the ticket.

Indian leaders, regardless of their party affiliations and principles, want to contest from safe constituencies as if they own them. They give the impression that they cannot influence with their sage advice but need power and authority forever. This is a sad state of affairs in the country. Ignoring Jaswant Singh was a big mistake, putting up a defector from the ruling party BJP is showing they have no moral binding and are opportunists for the sake of few seats. The party will be divided at least in that constituency and one seat will be lost. BJP seems over confident about winning as it was in 2004. Senior members must be taken into full confidence on ticket distribution. An outsider, who had joined the party recently, was given the ticket while senior people who had worked for more than 30 years have been brushed aside. I agree that this ‘horse-trading’ do take place and no party is an exception to this.

Looking at present conditions in BJP, I can see a new party emerging as BJP(I) independent.

Rajnath does a U-turn on BJP slogan, ‘time for BJP’, reverts to ‘time for Modi’

U-turn-on-BJPMinutes after releasing a new slogan “Time For Change, Time For BJP” for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, indicating a shift in focus from Narendra Modi, BJP chief Rajnath Singh on Monday took a U-turn by replacing it with a new one “Bahut Hui Mehngai Ki Maar, Abki Baar Modi Sarkar”.

Singh had earlier tweeted a new campaign slogan “Time For Change, Time For BJP” amid growing concerns that Modi has become bigger than the party and is being revered as a deity, and replaced it with the old one “Time for change, Time For Modi”.

Singh also sought to address the concerns raised by several top leaders that Modi’s growing popularity and towering persona has converted the upcoming Lok Sabha polls into a battle for one-upmanship.

Though Modi will still remain the main face of the party in the crucial Lok Sabha polls, the BJP workers will now seek votes for him using the new campaign “Abki Baar, Bhajapa Sarkar”.

The development was significant as it came amid criticism over the growing use of ‘Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi’ slogan by party workers to seek votes in UP, Bihar and other states.

A prominent Hindu seer, Shankaracharya of Dwarka Peeth, Swaroopanand Saraswati had also raised objections over the traditional chant ‘Har Har Mahadev’ which is raised to hail Lord Shiv being ‘modified’ into ‘Har Har Modi’, to spruce up Modi’s campaign.

Political parties like Samajwadi Party and Congress have also protested against BJP’s slogan ‘Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi’, saying it disrespected Lord Shiva and highlighted an individual over the almighty.

The Bihar BJP leaders had brushed aside the top seer’s objection to the ‘Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi’ slogan being raised by party workers to seek votes, saying it was within its democratic right to coin a slogan to woo voters.

Former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Modi said that there were any number of Shankaracharyas in the country and “we cannot take all of them seriously.”

However, the BJP top brass later sought to distance itself from the controversy over Modi saying, its official slogan was “Ab ki baar, Modi sarkar” (This time, Modi government).

Taking note of the seer’s objections, the Gujarat Chief Minister, in a tweet, urged party workers to refrain from raising the slogan during campaign.
“Some enthusiastic supporters have been using the slogan ‘Har Har Modi’. I respect their enthusiasm, but request them not to use this slogan in the future,” Modi had tweeted.

Advani must drop ‘V’ from his name for Narendra Modi to pay heed to him: Kejriwal

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Monday mocked the BJP over the infighting within the party and said that if its veteran LK Advani wants Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra to listen to him then he should remove the word ‘v’ from his last name.

Kejriwal, who has long accused Modi of having proximity to industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Adanis tweeted: If Advani wants Modi to listen to him, he should drop “v” from his name

Kejriwal’s comment comes in the backdrop of a controversy over BJP’s decision to field LK Advani from his Gandhinagar constituency in Gujarat, overruling his desire to shift to Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh reflecting the tension between him and Modi.

Advani is reportedly miffed with the party top brass after he was told to contest from Gandhinagar and not from his choice Bhopal.

However, Advani later said he has decided to contest from the Gandhinagar constituency, after he was mollified by party leaders, including Rajnath Singh and Narendra Modi.

Last week, the activist-turned politician called the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate a “property dealer for corporates like Ambani, Adani and Tatas.”

The former Delhi chief minister said he came to know from people of Gujarat that Modi uses helicopters and planes allegedly belonging to Mukesh Ambani.

Jaswant Singh files nomination from Barmer, says Rajnath, Raje betrayed him

Upset over denial of Lok Sabha ticket, senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh on Monday filed his nomination papers from Barmer as an Independent, leaving the central leadership sulking over his decision.

“I am relieved. People will tell me whether I should win. I am contesting on principles, and not just my honour but the honour of people,” he said after filing his papers.

Jaswant will now be fighting the elections against BJP candidate Colonel Sona Ram Choudhary who enjoys the backing of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.

Later, while addressing a rally in Barmer, Jaswant said Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and BJP president had betrayed him.

Jaswant said that BJP senior party leader LK Advani and Nitin Gadkari had requested him to join the party, but his family was against it.

The development has also brought to fore the growing dissent among the senior leaders, especially those close to party veteran LK Advani, who feel they are being being sidelined by the present leadership.

Reacting to the development, the BJP today said that no action will be taken against Singh as of now and the party will wait for him till the last date of withdrawal of nomination.

Singh had yesterday dared his party and said that he is “not a piece of furniture” to be “adjusted” after polls.

He has warned that the party will have to suffer the consequences of internal strife coming to the fore ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Back channel efforts were also started to bring him around but the veteran leader showed no signs of relenting.

Training his guns on BJP president Rajnath Singh who said the 76-year-old leader’s services will be utilised appropriately, Jaswant Singh retorted, “I am not a piece of furniture. The choice of the adjective ‘adjust’ itself is indicative of the mentality. You cannot adjust with principles and it is insulting”.

Slamming the BJP president’s remarks that the party will compensate him after the elections, Singh said, “I reject the thought and I reject the mentality behind it. Assumption is that they shall form the government and offer me some throttle. They can keep it for themselves”.

Jaswant Singh will, however, remain the member of BJP for now.

“Yes, I am filing my nomination papers Monday from Barmer. Independent or not, will depend on the party’s attitude,” he had said yesterday when asked whether he would contest despite denial of a ticket from his home constituency.

Sabir Ali expelled from JD(U) for praising Narendra Modi

Janata Dal (United) on Monday expelled its senior party leader Sabir Ali for praising Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

JD(U)’s Delhi unit chief was expelled from the party after he said, “Modi’s policies (in Gujarat) are good and Modi’s work for development is also laudable.”

JD(U) had given an election ticket to Ali from Sheohar region.

Ali is reportedly in touch with the BJP and may join it. He has been upset after the JD-U declined to nominate him to the Rajya Sabha.

Another ex-JD(U) MP NK Singh joined the BJP on Saturday after falling out with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

In his letter to Kumar, he expressed disappointment over the current situation in Bihar, saying ever since JD(U) broke ties with BJP last year the issue of development has taken a back seat.

He said he had told the Chief Minister that his government was now more focussed on political survival rather than development of the state.
