BJP slammed Kejariwal over freebies remark

The BJP has taken on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with its full force in refuting his claims about the BJP seeking withdrawal of subsidies in the education and health sectors.

Kejriwal came under heavy attack from BJP on Thursday with BJP hitting out against the “perverse twist” given by him on the debate on freebies and alleging that his politics was all about “revdi (freebie) culture”.

BJP leader Amit Malviya said that successive governments have been caring for the poor and Kejriwal cannot claim the credit for measures taken by a welfare government.

“In what seems like an inadvertent slip, Kejriwal admits that various governments, for the last 70-75 years, have been providing free education, food and healthcare to the poor. That is a welfare state. Arvind Kejriwal can’t claim the credit. His politics however is all about ‘revdi culture’,” he said.

BJP spokesperson RP Singh also accused Delhi Chief Minister of “unbridled spends on only ads”.

“Kejriwal has perfected a model which is about freebies for the certain media and allied ecosystem. Unbridled spends on only ads and ads and nothing else. This is what allows Arvind Kejriwal to blatantly lie in full public glare knowing media won’t expose him,” Singh said.

Former Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari said Kejriwal has been “resorting to lies” and said he had failed to fulfil his promises. He alleged that Kejriwal is not a man of his words.

“He has become a lying machine and he is not hesitant about it. A number of times, he made a U-turn over controversial statements made by him. A number of times he has apologized for his statements. Despite this, he continues to make such remarks. Whenever the central government makes schemes, it aims to serve people for their overall development. Earlier, during the days of election campaigning, Kejriwal said ‘sabke paani ke bill maaf, bijli half’. Did it happen for all people of Delhi? This is called revdi culture. He (Kejriwal) is not a man of his words,” Tiwari said.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that promising and distributing freebies by political parties during elections is a “serious issue” and an amount has to be spent on infrastructure etc.

The apex court was hearing a plea seeking direction to seize election symbols and deregister political parties that promised to distribute irrational freebies from public funds.

A bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Krishna Murari told parties in the case: “Economy losing money and welfare of people, both have to be balanced. That is why this debate and there must be someone who can put their vision and thoughts. Please submit something.”

BJP MP KJ Alphons said the Modi government has spent money on changing the lives of the poor.

“Most of the money spent by the Modi government has been on creating infrastructure for the poor, from housing to toilets, drinking water, insurance, medical, you name it,” he said.

He said political parties should seek votes on performance and not freebies. “It should be based on performance but some governments, I mean, take the example of Delhi government, all that it does is give freebies. Whose money is it? It is the public’s money being used for political purposes that is inappropriate,” he said.

“What government should do is perform and then ask people– look at this, we have done things for you, would you vote for us? I think that is exactly what the Prime Minister is saying,” Alphons said.

Whereas BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia hit out at Kejriwal over allegations faced by his ministerial colleague Satyendar Jain. “Kejriwal is asking where the money goes? It does not go to Satyendar Jain’s house, it goes to provide ration to 80 crore people, goes to vaccines. Today is the day to catch lies of liars like Kejriwal,” Bhatia said.

The BJP leader said Kejriwal also “uttered lies about MNREGA”.

“There have been no such cuts in the MNREGA scheme as he has alleged. And this was a lie Arvind Kejriwal said that the amount of MNREGA has been cut. Also, I would like to remind Arvind Kejriwalji about what Nirmala Sitharaman said in Parliament. The government will allocate more funds for MNREGA if needed. In fact, I challenge Arvind Kejriwal if he thinks what I’m saying is a lie. We come prepared with facts. BJP stands by the common man, Kejriwal should learn about finances,” he said.

BJP leader Adesh Gupta said money allocated to the Delhi government is “not used properly”.

“Can Kejriwal answer my one question? If the Centre is not giving money, then from where was he able to present the Delhi budget? The Delhi government is getting its required share of GST. The Centre is giving states its required share of GST in a proper manner. However, the money allocated to various sectors in the Delhi budget is not used properly. A large chunk of funds is lying unused. The money that was needed for the uplifting labourers is not being used adequately. Where is the money going? Who is responsible for this problem?” he asked.

Referring to Agnipath scheme, Gupta said it is very successful. “This scheme will make the youth of the country towards self-reliance. Kejriwal has only favoured those who run liquor vends. Why is Kejriwal anti-people and only pro-politics? It shows that Kejriwal is no longer ‘aam aadmi’ and has become ‘khaas aadmi,'” he said.

BJP MP Parvesh Verma also accused Kejriwal of resorting to lies. “He states that he will address press conference but runs away by addressing the people virtually with no political debate. He cooks up lies and makes efforts to deviate people’s attention from the core problems,” the MP said.

Verma rejected Kejriwal’s allegations pertaining to waive offs and tax rebates.

“Recently, Kejriwal went to Gujarat and said that he will provide Rs 1000 per month to every woman in the state. Why did he not propose this for the women in Delhi? Kejriwal also promised to provide unemployment allowance to the people of Gujarat. Why did he not propose this offer for the women in Delhi… he has no accountability for his statements.”

In his press conference, Kejriwal alleged that it is for the first time in the history of the country that “the Centre, justifying their Agnipath Yojna, said they’re doing it so they do not have to pay pensions to defence persons anymore”.

“Never in past 75 years has govt taxed basic food grains. Tax over petrol and diesel is over Rs 1000 crore. They’re now saying all free things by government should end, fee should be charged in govt schools, hospitals. They’re saying free rations to be stopped,” Kejriwal said.

“Where did all money of the centre go? They’re forgiving loans of their friends with this government money. They’ve even forgiven taxes of their billionaire friends,” he alleged.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said that the culture of ‘revdis’ being promoted by AAP government was more focused on advertising but weak on governance.

“I am here to expose the free education model of Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal’s mantra is Vigyapan par zor, Vyavastha me kamjor (Focus on advertisements, weak on governance). Kejriwal’s revdi model means that of the 500 schools and 20 colleges promised, none have been delivered. This is the revdi culture we caution against,” he told the media.

Government sources said Kejriwal is deliberately framing the argument in a manner that is wrong. They said nobody is saying that free benefits to the poor is wrong but it is also wrong to classify the loan write-offs as freebies or to say that corporate tax rate cut was designed to benefit the corporates.

The sources said the central government is giving free food over and above the highly subsidised food provided under the NFSA.

The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana provides 5 kg of free foodgrain to 80 crore people every month, and at the end of September 2022 it would have been running for 2.5 years.

They said some political parties do not have a coherent strategy to take long-term corrective steps, create more employment, boost incomes or improve the ease of doing business and they are unable to resolve issues adversely affecting people.

The entire focus, they said, is to simply promise freebies and allurements to either win elections or stay in power by offering them as ‘bait’ to woo the voters.

There is no justification for political parties offering freebies that the government’s exchequer cannot afford and will eventually lead to bankruptcy of the state, the sources said and added that when they promise free electricity, water or other freebies, they are merely borrowing from future generations to reward the present generation.

The BJP and AAP had engaged in a war of words on the freebie culture. While the BJP has emphasised that such politics is not in the people’s interest, AAP has claimed that its politics were in favour of the poor.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh slammed the BJP government. “The free services provided to the people come from taxpayer’s money. People reciprocate for the facilities given. The schemes are run on money provided by the taxpayer. The use of words like ‘free revdi’ is a mockery of people, of the poor, of the facilities given to people,” he said in a video posted by AAP on its Twitter handle.

He alleged that the government had hiked GST on items of daily use such as curd. He also said that the Centre has been unable to control inflation and alleged that it has been unable to tackle unemployment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that people who have a tendency to avoid problems by adopting shortcuts for political selfishness can never solve the problems permanently.

Those adopting short-cuts may get applause for some time and may gain political advantage, but that does not solve the problem.

Adopting a short-cut will definitely result in a short-circuit, he said. “Instead of following short-cuts, our government is engaged in permanent solutions to the problems. A lot has been said about the problems of stubble over the years. But those with a short-cut mentality could not solve it,” he said.

“Selfish announcements of freebies will prevent the country from becoming self-reliant, increase the burden on honest taxpayers and prevent investment in new technologies,” he added.

The youth is the hope of our future 3

August 12 is celebrated as International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 to recognize efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing global society. It is a Day to focus on the rights of the young people to have full access to education, adequate healthcare, employment opportunities, financial services and full participation in public life. Over half the world’s population is under the age of 30. The progress, dreams, and world-changing abilities are restricted for many young people. The international Youth Day is a moment to recognize and celebrate the promise and power of young people to change their communities, their counties, and the world. Today’s youth bring great leadership and resilience. Swami Vivekananda has rightly said while giving advice to the youth that “Supreme value of youth is incalculable and indescribable. Youth is the most precious part of human life. The way in which you utilize this period will decide the nature of the coming years that lie ahead of you. Your happiness, success, honor and good name all depend upon the way in which you like now, in the period.” The objective of this day is to spread his knowledge and literature to society, to build good characters and true citizens of the Nation.

There are currently 1.9 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24 in the world. This is the largest youth population ever. But 1 in 10 of the world’s children live in conflict zones and 24 million of them are out of school. They are a source of innovation, creativity, energy and foresight, and member states must use all means possible to foster and harness the power of the youth. They are the most connected, the most outspoken and the most open-minded generation the world has ever seen.” Today’s youth have potential to shape the world both in the present and in the future. Empowerment through education has the power to change the life of young people and release them from the grip of poverty. No doubt, efforts are being made to provide youth with many opportunities to develop their skills, capabilities, personality and become good citizens of the country. Youths of today are much more sensitized than before and there is a growing demand for recognition of their rights. Youth empowerment is an attitudinal, structural, and cultural process whereby young people gain the ability, authority, and agency to make decisions and implement change in their own lives and in the lives of other people, including youth and adults. Access to education and training has to be amplified so that youth can develop their competencies. We need to create an international perspective in the youth and to involve them in promoting peace and understanding and the establishment of a just global economic order;

It is quite important to focus on the goals and ideas to cultivate a better future amongst different Countries. Today as we acknowledge and celebrate youth around the world, let us pledge to continue the momentum and together work to ensure that youth, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized, are equipped with the proper skills and tools needed to lead us towards a better world. Youths are most precious and latent resource and it is necessary to organize them and channelize their energies towards desirable goals for national development. Everyone have a dream to arrive at a great height, and they want to perform in their activity in a better way. So it is important for the development of the country to develop the Youth of the Nation to make a strong and better Nation.

The youth is leading the change, and International Youth Day ensures that they have the ability, skill, motivation and recognition to continue to do so. Leadership, discipline and citizenship cannot develop automatically nor these qualities be acquired once character is formed. These qualities have been inculcated by proper training to the youths.
While the international youth day primarily focuses on celebrating young people and their efforts in conflict prevention, inclusion, social justice, and peace across the globe, it is reasonably important for the people to encourage each and every youth to participate in every activity to make them perfect for every activity to develop their and Countries future.

US-based NRI philanthropists join hands to fight hunger in India

The United States-based Indian diaspora has joined hands to provide food and livelihood support to poor and elderly people in India. Anil K Monga, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Victory International (USA), LLC, which is involved in the manufacturing and distribution of fine fragrances worldwide, has taken the lead in raising money for the welfare of the poor and marginalised in India.

“We have been doing this for 26 years now. On average, we have managed to mobilise and spend 3 to 4 million dollars annually for the welfare of people in India,” said Monga. Monga runs the welfare initiatives in India under Dream & Beauty Charitable Trust. The Trust was founded in 1996. The focus of the Trust’s welfare activities has been Punjab.

“We have been working on multiple fronts in Punjab. We serve over 7,000 meals per day to the poor and destitute mostly in slums,” said Monga, who is also the chairman of Dream & Beauty Charitable Trust. During the COVID pandemic, DBCT served nearly 4.2 million meals to people who lack basic amenities and were in difficult times.

The Trust runs its hunger alleviation programme under the initiative called Brahmbhog. “During the COVID pandemic, we served approximately 4.2 million meals and saved several souls. We have been sending five ambulances with drivers, doctors, nurses and medications serving about 800 to 1,000 people daily under Karma Healthcare.

We have a livelihood programme called Margdarshan where we train the youth and place them in jobs. We have transformed more than 7,000 lives so far. Once these girls start making 7,000 to 10,000 rupees a month their next generation won’t be uneducated,” said Monga.

For the welfare of elderly people, DBCT has set up Heavenly Palace, a home for senior citizens situated at Doraha in the Ludhiana district of Punjab. DBCT has also set up Heavenly Angels, an orphanage for homeless children.

“We have been providing healthy food to over 5,000 poor people every day for the past several years. This needs to be replicated in other parts of the country,” Monga told ANI. Monga said he is keen to collaborate with industrialists and other social welfare organisations to expand and replicate the welfare initiatives in other parts of the country.

He urged the Indian industrialists to spend on social welfare. “Businesses need to spend more on social welfare. There are CSR-related laws. But there is a need to do more. They need to do it voluntarily,” he said.

“It does not matter how much money you earn. If people are forced to sleep without food and inequality rises it is alarming for businesses. Businesses must work for the social welfare and remove inequality,” he said.

Chairman of International Meditation Foundation Mahamandaleshwar Swami Advaitananda Giri said millions of people have benefited from the Brahmbhog initiative.

“During the COVID pandemic, elderly people were among the worst affected. Old people were taken very good care of at Heavenly Palace,” Advaitananda Giri said.

“If we all participate in the wider objective of lending a helping hand to those in need, we will very soon see a massive shift in the world we live in. It not only changes the lives of those in need but also the life of the person who supports them,” he added.

Nitish may reconsider his decision: Maharashtra minister on Bihar politics

Maharashtra minister Deepak Kesarkar on Thursday said that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar might “reconsider” his decision to part ways with the BJP if he felt he had picked a “wrong party”.

“It’s just a phase. I don’t mean to criticise him (CM Nitish Kumar). He is a senior politician who has served the state well as the CM. But he may reconsider his decision if he feels that he has picked the wrong party. That’s not unprecedented,” Deepak Kesarkar said while commenting on the recent political developments in Bihar.

There has been speculation that Nitish Kumar is gearing up for a larger role at the national level. However, the Bihar Chief Minister rejected any such speculation after being sworn in.

“Those who came to power in 2014, will they be victorious in 2024? I would like all (opposition) to be united for 2024. I am not a contender for any such post (PM post),” he said.

Kumar has sworn in as Bihar Chief Minister again yesterday after parting ways with the BJP and joining the RJD-led Grand Alliance to form a new government in the state.

Kumar ditched the BJP alleging that it was trying to break his JD(U), and joined hands with former political opponents RJD in the Mahagathbandhan on Tuesday.

The BJP alleged that by joining with the RJD, Nitish Kumar had disrespected the mandate given by the people. Meanwhile, soon after the swearing-in ceremony, Kumar said that his party made the decision to leave the BJP through internal consensus.

He sought cooperation from interim Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for change in Bihar. Sonia Gandhi asked him to contact Rahul Gandhi as well. However, Kumar gave the responsibility to contact Congress leader Rahul Congress to Tejashwi Yadav.

Tejashwi immediately contacted Rahul Gandhi. Notably, Rahul Gandhi agreed to be in touch with the party in charge of the state Bhakta Charan Das. After this talks took place and the script for the change was ready.

Nitish wanted such a majority so that the BJP could not topple the government by making a dent in it, so remained silent till the figure reached 164 through the Left and Congress and the bet was played as soon as he got the chance.

Meanwhile, BJP leader and former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi suggested that the fallout between his party and Nitish Kumar could be linked to the Bihar chief minister’s desire to become the country’s vice president. Kumar was a long-time BJP ally before snapping ties in 2013. He later again joined hands in 2017.

Kumar said that there was a unanimous decision in the party meeting in the morning “to break off ties”. JD-U and BJP had fought the 2020 assembly polls together and Nitish Kumar was made the chief minister of the alliance though the BJP had won more seats.

Nitish Kumar’s ties with BJP stretched to over two decades and he was a minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1996. JD-U leaders indicated that factors including the developments related to the exit of RCP Singh from the party had soured ties with BJP.

JD-U leaders have also been chafing at the role of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan during the 2020 assembly polls and have indicated that his putting up candidates from seats contested by the party had damaged it.

JD-U and RJD had fought the 2015 Bihar polls together. JD-U has 45 and the RJD has 79 MLAs in the 243-member Bihar assembly. JD-U is the third major ally to leave the BJP in the past three years after Shiv Sena in Maharashtra and Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab.

Kejariwal slammed the Centre saying that, ”the money collected from taxes is not for waiving loans of politicians friends.”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday slammed the Centre saying that the money collected from taxes is for serving the people of the country and not for waiving loans of politicians’ friends.

Kejriwal on Thursday held a press conference to counter the statement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the day.

PM Modi said, “Instead of following short-cuts, our government is engaged in permanent solutions to the problems. A lot has been said about the problem of stubble burning over the years. But those with a short-cut mentality could not solve it”.

Delhi CM countered by saying, “Never in the past 75 years has the government taxed basic food grains. Tax over petrol and diesel is over Rs 1,000 crore. They’re now saying all free things by the government should end, and fees should be charged in govt schools and hospitals. They’re saying free rations to be stopped.”

“It is for the first time in the history of the country that the Centre, justifying their Agnipath Yojna, said they’re doing it so they do not have to pay pensions to defence persons anymore. The Centre has time and again repeated that they don’t have money, and has decreased money that was given to states. Tax being collected is much higher as compared to 2014 but they have no money. Where is the money going?” Kejriwal asked.

Kejriwal raised questions saying, “Where did all money from the Centre go? They’re waiving loans of their friends with this government money. They’ve even waived the taxes of their billionaire friends.”

Earlier, the Prime Minister said that if there is selfishness in politics, then anyone can come and announce free petrol and diesel. Such steps will take away the rights of children, and prevent the country from becoming self-reliant.

“Due to such selfish policies, the burden on honest taxpayers of the country will also increase,” the PM remarked.

To deal with the challenges that the country is facing, it needs clear intentions, hard work, policy and huge investments.

The Prime Minister said if the government does not have money, then even ethanol, biogas and solar plants will also close down.

“We have to remember that even though we will not be there, this nation will always be there, and the children living in it will always be there. Those who sacrificed their lives for freedom have also worked with this eternal spirit…..As a country, we have to take a pledge that we will not allow such tendencies to grow. This is a collective responsibility of the country,” he said.
