Disputing facts mentioned in a government affidavit on instances of double allotment of flats from Chief Minister’s discretionary quota, a PIL urged the Bombay High Court to order a CBI probe into such irregularities.
In his affidavit which came up for hearing today, the petitioner Ketan Tirodkar cited some cases which he alleged the state government had either “omitted or concealed” in its list (of double allottees of flats from the CM’s quota) submitted to the court.
The PIL challenged double allotment of houses from the CM’s quota either to same beneficiary or to his family members in the same urban agglomeration or in other urban area of the state.
The government sought time from the court to file a reply to Tirodkar’s affidavit and the bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka gave four weeks time for this purpose.
The petitioner also pointed out a case of an MLA who owns a house in Mumbai while his wife being allotted a flat under the CM’s quota in Mumbai. In another case, he said the state had wrongly mentioned that a mother has no blood relations with her sons.
Since these cases were not listed by the government in its affidavit filed earlier in keeping with the Court’s order on furnishing names of double allottees of houses, the petitioner demanded a CBI probe into the matter.
Earlier, the PIL had asked for a state CID inquiry.
However, in view of the government’s affidavit in which allegedly some names of double allottees were missed out or a wrong set of facts mentioned in some cases, the PIL is now seeking a CBI probe.
The state had on last occasion informed the court that it had identified 14 cases wherein the same person or his/her spouse had been allotted more than one house in state under the CM’s five per cent discretionary housing quota.
A PIL has been filed in the Bombay High Court against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), its leader Arvind Kejriwal and members Mayank Gandhi and Anjali Damania for allegedly misusing the national flag and emblem to gain political mileage.
The public interest litigation (PIL) filed by one Ram Samudre claims that the party was using the national flag and emblem on its websites during political rallies and trying to pass it off as its party symbol.
“The respondents have been using the national flag and emblem to gain political mileage. This is a violation under the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act and the State Emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper Use) Act,” the petition said.
The petition came up before a division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M S Sanklecha which posted it for hearing on March 12.
The petition has sought a direction to the political party and its members not to misuse the flag and emblem.
You tube video exposing Arvind Kejriwal and Punya Prasun Bajpai’s conversation, gathered lots of attention and hits. Since inception of AAP, many journalists have shown a soft corner for the party, as Kejriwal is being created by the media. Even, many journalists joined his party to fulfill their political aspirations. The so called ‘exposed’ was no surprise to me at all. Arvind Kejriwal always remains in the headlines. His social network team keeps him and his party AAP both in news. Let’s talk about the interview, and ‘exposed’.
Prasun says, “Fine, let’s drop this topic. And let’s talk about the 80 per cent of the population, where the ‘vote bank’ lies.”
Kejriwal replies, “Absolutely. I had forgotten to talk about that!” And this is exactly the order of the final version of the interview.
Generally, this happens in everyone’s case. After the interview the panelists and anchor generally sit over the discussions, not necessarily with any agenda. If interviews could be managed or it is possible to go against channel’s policy or anchor’s ethics, many such top politicians who got embarrassed time and again would have managed the show in their favour.
Look at the video again. Kejriwal is narrating roughly to Prasun that he is not happy conversing about privatisation as it would create disillusion among the middle class; and of course middle class is his vote bank. When Kejriwal was telling Prasun that he doesn’t want to argue an issue which may upset his electoral politics, should the broadcaster change the topic of debate? I couldn’t see any fixing or planning in this interview.
A sting video, featuring Arvind Kejriwal and TV anchor Punya Prasun Bajpai, is doing rounds on You Tube. In the video, Arvind Kejriwal and Punya Prasun Bajpai are shown discussing the content of the interview in an off-the record talk. The video shows how AAP leader is expressing to senior journalist about his discomforts, Prasun was reciprocating to the same. Whatever Kejriwal said should be telecast on air then what is fixed or pre planned about it? The video starts with Kejriwal and Bajpai discussing the questions and content of the interview with a transcript of their discussion. Anyways, Modi ‘bhaktas’ on social media already declared Punya Prasun Bajpai as the media advisor for Kejriwal and he is deciding the content and topic of interviews before the Lok Sabha elections. They even attacked Anjana Om Kashyap. Attack on media or journalist in particular is not new. Barkha Dutt, Sagarika Ghose, Nikhil Waghle all were on radar of BJP supporters, after Godhra riots. These journalists were called as paid coolies of Congress. Time and again media has been accused for many things. Now, the BJP and Congress supporters shifted their focus to Kejriwal as he is the biggest threat to both parties. His growing popularity has made these national parties restless.
Today, social media is another big threat. It can build image instantly as well as do character assassination also in one day. Just one has to spread the word in a particular group, then that goes viral. I won’t be surprised, if after watching this particular clip, Election Commission’s ire on AAP increases and alleges them of violating ‘model code of conduct’ and managing media.
This is not the first time media has come into limelight for controversy. There are many such news agencies, social media, news channels and newspapers which take undue liberty to gain attention. Social Media at times violate policies. There was an IT Act currently administered by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. Media ethics (and ethics in general) is, and always has been, a matter of constantly inventing and altering norms to meet ever-new social and technological conditions. Contestation and change are natural to ethics, not regrettable aberrations. In the long run, this is a good thing. Today’s alternate interpretations of journalism are a rich resource for constructing a more adequate ethics for interactive and global media. But, journalism has reached across borders and social media even beyond that.
The role of the journalist needs a global amplification. People trust what media shows, and social media breaks that faith and inculcate their own narration. Here media needs to be more subtle and responsible. There should be some morals on how to use new media: Future media integrities will say useful things on the responsible use of new media and how to deal with unified newsrooms. Today’s journalists need more study and patience while handling delicate issues. But individual journalist needs more detailed guidance in making ethical decisions.
Liable media experts remain committed to general principles, such as seeking the truth and reporting independently. However beyond this general level, the media revolution has undermined a previous professional consent on the best forms of practice, and the norms that guide them. Our media uprising creates multiple and contradictory clarifications of journalism. Turning small issues into a disaster and serious issues to go unnoticeable is today latest fashion in social media. We need to be more matured and disciplined. People trust us and taking them for a ride with all misleading stories will not create any revolution. Over drama will not resolve the social status.
The narration between Punya Prasun and Kejriwal is completely misinterpreted. Anyways, the big question remains here is, how that video footage leaked from Aaj Tak office and who is playing spoilsport for media house for some gains? What is the intention behind leaking this video? Whoever leaked the video but Punya Prasun is paying for that, where his intention was not that what video is showing.
Shiv Sena rebel sitting Member of Parliament Anand Paranjpe has quit the party to join NCP for contesting Lok Sabha election from Kalyan. The party has fielded Shrikant Shinde son of MLA Eknath Shinde. The district president Gopal Landge and his group are upset with this decision which might affect the party’s poll prospects. The MNS has fielded Raju Patil but the main competition is between Shiv Sena and MNS.
Anand Paranjpe contested the 2009 Lok Sabha election through the Shiv Sena ticket and defeated NCP candidate Vasant Davkhare and MNS candidate Vaishali Darekar. Paranjpe had served the Shiv Sena for four years and later quit the party. He joined NCP and received a ticket from the party for contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha election. Party workers received an instruction from Matoshree to teach a lesson to Anand Paranjpe for rebelling against the party.
Groupism is prevalent inside the Shiv Sena which will adversely affect the party’s performance in the forthcoming election. Gopal Landge has been working as the Kalyan District President from last four years. Under his leadership the Shiv Sena was re-elected in the Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation. After Paranjpe quit the party, Landge started attending minor events in the constituency. By nominating Shrikant Shinde, Shiv Sena will make every effort to defeat the rebel NCP candidate Anand Paranjpe.
After the demise of MP Prakash Paranjpe, Shiv Sena issued a ticket to his son Anand Paranjpe. People were expecting that a renowned candidate will be issued tickets to contest the 2009 Lok Sabha election from Kalyan constituency. However, the party issued ticket to Anand Paranjpe.
The candidature of standing MP Anand Paranjpe was not opposed by any supporter. A conflict existed between Eknath Shinde and Anand Paranjpe as the latter quit the party and joined NCP. After quitting Sena Paranjpe had mentioned in an interview that Shiv Sena leader used to criticize him and say that nobody recognises him. As a result of this, Paranjpe quit the party due the prevalence of infighting in it. Many times he tried to contact Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray but he refused to meet him.

Without naming Nitish Kumar, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi slammed him on Monday, saying that his arrogance is higher than Mount Everest as he thinks that no none is better than him to be the prime minister.
Addressing a massive rally, Modi said he had mulling for days over the reason that led to the breaking of alliance (BJP-JD-U) in Bihar.
“I was thinking for days, why did our very happy alliance break. I thought a lot. Some people suggested that it was due to arrogance, some said he stabbed us in back. I thought how would Jai Prakash Narayan and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia be feeling. Imagine their pain,” Modi said without naming the Bihar Chief Minister.
“But a few days ago we understood why he broke the alliance – the dream of becoming PM did not let him sleep…and he thinks so highly of himself, it is higher than Everest…feels nothing is possible without him,” he said.
Attacking the Third Front, Modi said, “All the parties in the formation have at one point or the other helped the Congress form the government. And there are ex-PMs or those who want to be PM.”
Modi also used the opportunity to greet the people for the upcoming Holi festival. “Along with Holi, the country will also be awash with colours of elections,” he said.
“Like the colours of Holi, the colours of development, progress and brotherhood will be spread all over India,” Modi added.
In what could prove to be a significant step in the process of decriminalisation of politics, the Supreme Court on Monday set a deadline of one year for lower courts to complete the trial in cases involving MPs and MLAs.
The apex court bench headed by Justice RM Lodha said the offences for which trial has to conclude within one year are those mentioned under Sections 8(1), 8(2) and 8(3) of the Representation of People Act.
The SC said the trial judge will have to explain to the Chief Justice of High Court if he fails to complete trial within a year of framing of charges. The bench, however, said the period can be extended by the Chief Justice if he is satisfied with the reason given by trial judge for not completing the trial within this period.
The SC further stated that the trial in cases involving MPs and MLAs are to be conducted on day-to-day basis.
As the trial is kept pending for years, lawmakers continue to enjoy membership of the legislative body despite being charged in a heinous offence, the court noted.
The court direction came on a petition filed by NGO Public Interest Foundation which sought to decriminalise the electoral politics in the country.
The NGO contended that MPs and MLAs continue to be Members of Parliament and Assembly for a long time due to delay in proceedings.
Actor-turned-politician Jaya Prada, along with her political mentor and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, on Monday joined Rashtriya Lok Dal.
While RLD chief Ajit Singh welcomed the duo in the party, Amar Singh lauded Chaudhary Charan Singh and said that his contribution in the development of the country is praiseworthy.
Targeting BJP and Congress, Singh said that both the parties have shown no concern towards the division of Uttar Pradesh. He also said that the state must divide for further development.
Backing Amar Singh, Jaya said that she will follow Singh in whichever party the former SP member would join.
As per the sources, Singh may contest from Fatehpur Sikri while Jaya will be fielded from Sikar.
Singh and Jaya were expelled from the SP for indulging in anti-party activities and denting its socialist image.
Later, Singh formed Lok Manch and contested for 360 Assembly seats in UP in 2012. However, he could not win the elections. Moreover, rumours were doing the rounds that he would join the Congress.
On the other hand, RLD will contest 2014 General Elections along with the Congress. The party will contest from eight seats where Congress will not be fielding any of its candidates. The seats include Baghpat, Kairana, Bijnor, Nagina, Amroha, Hathras, Mathura and Bulandshahr.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday released the fourth list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Among the 60 candidates announced today is journalist Ashish Khaitan from New Delhi constituency. Former Tehelka journalist Khaitan is the founder of news portal gulail.com that had levelled charges against Narendra Modi over alleged illegal surveillance of woman by the Gujarat Police.
The other name announced for Delhi was of Col Devendra Sehrawat, he will contest from South Delhi.
Another prominent name in the list is that of satirist turned politician Bhagwant Mann. He will contest from Sangrur in Punjab. Mann was earlier with Manpreet Badal’s Peoples Party of Punjab.
The fourth list has names of two candidates from Delhi, four from Haryana, 13 from Karnataka, three from Punjab and 38 from UP.
Addressing a rally in Tonk district’s Deoli town Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi said on Monday that his party would go all out to fight the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Launching the campaign in Rajasthan, Rahul said, “We want to do politics and run the government for those who run the country on a daily basis, namely chowkidars, taxi drivers, auto drivers and son on.”
Hitting out at Congress’ main rival the BJP, Rahul said, “They (BJP) just want to benefit the rich if they come to power. But we want to help the downtrodden,” adding, “We will go on the road, will go to villages, we will go to streets and we will fight the BJP government in Rajasthan.”
Playing the youth card, he said, “After we lost the (Assembly) elections we made a youth as PCC president to represent your aspirations.”
Talking about the Congress’ development agenda for Rajasthan Rahul said that they were building dedicated industrial and freight corridor and that the state will benefit from it. He also said that the Congress had industrial corridors from Delhi to Mumbai, Mumbai to Chennai and Delhi to Kolkata on its agenda. “This will create lakhs of jobs,” he said.
At the same time the Congress VP maintained, “We want more and more people to go to IIT’s and universities.”
Rahul Gandhi also promised to bring in new faces for every election. “We will put up new faces and young faces in Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha,” he said.
After being expelled from the Aam Aadmi Party, Laxmi Nagar’s former MLA Vinod Kumar Binny is likely to contest Lok Sabha elections from East Delhi on Trinamool Congress’ ticket.
According to reports, Binny recently met TMC Rajya Sabha member Derek O’Brien and party’s chief campaigner Vinod Singh in Delhi.
At present, East Delhi constituency is represented by Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit who is also a son of former Delhi chief minister Shiela Dikshit. Furthermore, AAP has fielded Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Rajmohan Gandhi from East Delhi.
Buoyed by Anna Hazare’s support, Mamata Banerjee will organise ‘Jantantra’ rally at the Ramlila ground on March 12. Banerjee may announce the names of the candidates she will field in Delhi’s seven constituencies.
In the Delhi Assembly elections, held in December last year, Binny had defeated former Delhi health minister Ashok Kumar Walia by 8,000 votes. However, he turned into a rebel when he was reportedly not made a minister in Delhi cabinet. Later, he called Arvind Kejriwal a dictator and alleged that the AAP had deviated from core issues.
On the other hand, Kejriwal said that Binny was seeking to contest General Elections from East Delhi, but the party had already decided that no sitting MLA would get ticket. On January 26 Kejriwal expelled him from the party.
