Modi versus Kejriwal on Gujarat field

A free man now, Arvind Kejriwal, after he stepped down as Delhi’s chief minister, continued his attack on Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s Prime Ministerial Narendra Modi. Kejriwal wants Modi to break his silence on gas pricing. He also wants Modi to specify what is his and his party’s relation with Mukesh Ambani and Adani. Anyhow that issue has been settling down with time. However, Kejriwal literally took it seriously and is touring Gujarat. He sat with people under a tree in a village in central Gujarat, asked a simple question to people surrounding him. He asked, “If you are unhappy with Narendra Modi, why did you vote for him?” The villagers shared stories that contradict the claims of development that Mr. Modi has centre-pieced in his campaign. The women in the audience said government schools are sub-standard and hospitals are non-existent. One man who was there said he paid bribe to government officers for completing his work as they were not forwarding his file. Kejriwal listened intently to them. For the next three days, the former tax inspector will tour parts of Mr. Modi’s homestead, part of a self-declared audit of Mr. Modi’s performance as the man who has governed Gujarat for nearly 13 years. “(They say) education has developed, health issues have been resolved, corruption has been finished… so Kejriwal has gone there to see that development in Gujarat.

Since Mr. Kejriwal resigned as the Chief Minister of Delhi last month, he has been expending his efforts on campaigning and strategising for the national election. His Aam Aadmi Party has suggested that Mr. Kejriwal will contest against Mr. Modi if the BJP leader runs for Parliament from anywhere outside Gujarat. Just over a year since its formation, AAP, which has positioned itself as an anti-corruption party, won enough seats in December’s Delhi state elections to take power. Mr. Kejriwal quit as chief minister after the anti-graft bill proposal he championed, the Jan Lokpal Bill, was stalled in the Delhi legislature.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is continuing its attack on BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. It’s a known fact that Modi’s huge and mega rallies are sponsored by Adani and Ambanis, both these tycoons have played major role in making of Modi a ‘Brand’. Kejriwal said Modi should speak on Mukesh Ambani and gas pricing in Himachal’s rally which he conducted on Sunday. The AAP leader also questioned Gandhi’s support to higher gas price allegedly favouring the Ambanis. The party has been attacking the two leaders over this issue ever since an FIR was registered by AAP led Delhi government against Mukesh Ambani and Union Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily. His party has been making the gas pricing as an issue ahead of 2014 General elections. Would 2014 elections be fought between AAP and Mukesh Ambani, with Rahul and Modi being agents of Mukesh Ambani?

On Kejriwal’s orders, the Delhi government’s anti-corruption bureau had registered an FIR against Union Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily, Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani, former Union Minister Murli Deora and retired director general of Hydrocarbons VK Sibal for creating an artificial shortage of natural gas in the country and raising its prices.

A few months back, Modi had challenged Mr. Rahul Gandhi for a debate and Gandhi did not respond to him. Now, is Modi ready to debate with Arvind Kejriwal? Before elections, there should be debate between in these three leaders. Let people know who is capable to head them. Democracy has the Right to Reject. If Kejriwal can’t bring the bill this time then he could table it in the next session. There are people on streets and slums of Delhi who voted to Kejriwal, believing that he will change their life. Leaving all such crucial priorities aside, he wouldn’t have resigned. There is no doubt that crony capitalism must end and transparency must prevail. But ‘everyone is thief approach’ must be given up otherwise our economy would suffer heavily. On the other hand, his question to Modi is valid, Modi has given a lot of favours to Ambani for his industries in Gujarat and the bond between them is rock solid. So, expecting Modi to break silence on Ambani and Adani would be laughable. He won’t make any statement since it would mean violation of agreement with the Reliance. It’s good that at least Kejriwal is daring to take up the issue and exposing them openly. Now, people of this country have to decide what they want. Whoever comes in power, RIL will be the favourite punching bag for AAP and the party will go to any extent to expose them. Unfortunately, for RIL, they have a product ‘gas” which directly hurts the common man. It really surprises me that people are avoiding the issue by saying matter is being ‘Subjudice’! Discussing alleged unethical things by the corporate houses is never deemed as contempt of court. At last, someone dares to break the conspiracy of silence. The important issues of the day have been carefully shielded from public debate under the guise of “growth” and “governance.” While Manmohan Singh’s reticence is to blame, the principal opposition’s obstructionist stances have led to the death of issue-based politics.

The Indian public discourse needed a rude shake-up to revive these issues. The four pillars, Executive, Legislature, Judiciary and the Media have slipped into a comfort zone in the sleaze of crony capitalist growth. True transparency will start with disclosures on electoral funds, but will take at least another 10 years. The revolution has barely begun and will need persistent support. Those who have manipulated systems so far will try to do so more virulently. Ambani must proceed to court; many things will come out if court takes serious note of it.

Survey conducted by many organisations reached a conclusion that many fake twitter ids were created to favour Modi and dislike others. Many senior politicians of BJP and other parties were abused by these supporters. Who is the brain child behind this, to create fake ids to tweet? How much money has been spent on this project? A probe is needed to establish Modi and Businessmen nexus. After this, court will also ask the government to clarify, who is ruling Gujarat? Modi is touring the nation from last one year, busy in attending mega rallies and meeting people to generate support in his favour.

Meanwhile, neither Modi nor any other politicians dare to utter a single word against Mukesh Ambani. They know the consequences of speaking against him. No political parties or politicians would like to lose election funds offered by corporate houses. RIL and Adani groups are in collusion with Modi and are further exposed from the CAG report which reveals that they were awarded farmland at throw-away prices. It becomes a trend that now the corporate houses do not put their eggs in one basket but in different baskets so that if any political party captures power, they are not harmed by it. Moreover, Kejriwal believes too much in populist talks. He should focus in constructive moves. That will be good for his political career as well as for the politics of this country.

Opinion polls predict that the BJP, led by Modi, will emerge as the largest political party but fall short of a majority in the general election that begins on April 7. Results will be declared on May 16.

Lok Sabha polls 2014: Nine-phase election from April 7, results on May 16

Nine-phaseThe schedule was announced by Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath along with Election Commissioners H S Brahma and Dr. Nasim Zaidi at a press conference held at Vigyan Bhavan in the national capital.

The elections would see more than 81.4 crore voters exercise their ballot; the number of voters is 10 crore more than the last general election held in 2009. The term of the current Lok Sabha expires on June 1 and the new House has to be constituted by May 31.

Sampath said that the EC had taken into consideration factors like examination schedules and weather conditions.

The EC said that electoral roll have already been updated till January 1, 2014 and final rolls have been published in all states.

However, the EC has offered one more opportunity to enroll in the electoral rolls. Camps would be set up on March 9 at all polling booths – around 9,30,000 – across the country to allow people to enroll themselves, the EC said.

The Model Code of Conduct for governments and political parties will come into force with immediate effect.

On the security measures being implemented by the EC, Sampath said, “To ensure free and fair elections we have taken particular care to ensure that people living in vulnerable areas and vulnerable voters are in continuous touch with the election machinery to ensure that they are able to vote uninterpreted by anyone.”

“Adequate number of observers in different categories will be deployed during the forthcoming elections,” he added.

On the neutrality of officials engaged in conduct of elections, Sampath said the EC expects them to discharge their duty without fear or favour.

“Strict action will be taken against officials who are found wanting in any aspect,” the CEC said.

With regards to the steps being taken to curb use of money power in the elections, he said, “The Election Commission has mounted a series of measures for monitoring expenditure; special emphasis is given to check flow of money during elections.”

“Besides expenditure observers, sufficient number of flying squads will be employed to check use of money power,” he added.

Election Commissioner HS Brahma said, “Appeal to all candidates, star candidates, they should not use any words which is against decorum & decency.”

An important feature of the polls would be the introduction of paper trail system for electronic voting in some constituencies on a trial basis.

Also, the EC has issued guidelines to political parties asking them to explain the rationale of financing the promises they make in their election manifestos. The guidelines that followed Supreme Court directions in this regard have now been made part of the Model Code.

Another first in the Lok Sabha elections will be the introduction of “None of the Above” (NOTA) option in voting, which came into vogue in the assembly elections a few months ago.

From the coming elections, candidates in a parliamentary constituency in bigger states can spend up to Rs. 70 lakh on their campaign, up from Rs. 40 lakh in 2011. In the 2009 elections, it was Rs. 25 lakh.

Whether I become PM or not is immaterial: Rahul Gandhi

Kicking off his party’s campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said whether he becomes the Prime Minister or not is immaterial but what matters is that all Indians, including women and youth, feel it is their country.

“My becoming or not becoming PM does not matter. What is most important is that everyone here, specially women and youth in country feel that this is their own country,” Rahul said while responding to best wishes from a youth for becoming the Prime Minister.

The young Congress leader said this while interacting with tribal youth at an engineering college here, as he began his two-day tour of Maharashtra.

Asking youth to enter mainstream politics, the Gandhi scion said there should not be even one youth who says he is afraid in his own country.

“I want to see MLAs, MLCs and MPs from amongst you in the next 10 years, maybe even a Prime Minister also,” he said.

Comparing Mahatma Gandhi and Hitler, Rahul said, “The German dictator shouted as he lacked confidence. But did Gandhi ji ever shout? That was because he was confident.”

“Like Mahatma Gandhi, humbleness while speaking is a sign of extreme self-confidence. Confidence should not be seen as aggression,” he said.

“There is no need for saying things aggressively. You can say it with love. Many people will be with you,” he said.

“If anyone, be it Rahul Gandhi or Prithviraj Chavan, says he knows better than you, he is telling a lie,” he said. “My request to you, specially tribal youth, is to join mainstream politics,” Rahul said.

“My message to the country’s youth is that the talent and capability the youth here have is not there anywhere else,” the Congress leader said.

On the progress the country has made since Independence, Rahul pointed out that today there were several rich people in India.

“Around 50 to 70 years ago there was not even a single rich person here. The only rich were maharajas and British,” he said.

On March 6, the Congress leader will interact with fishermen at Versova, after which he will address a public rally at Sonale village, Bhiwandi bypass, in Thane district.

AICC General Secretary in-charge of Maharashtra affairs Mohan Prakash, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and MPCC president Manikrao Thakre are accompaning Rahul during the tour.

Ruling Congress-NCP coalition in Maharashtra will be contesting the Lok Sabha polls with the same 26:22 seat-sharing formula adopted during the last elections, with Congress contesting 26 of the total 48 LS seats in the state.

There are 17 Congress members from the state in the outgoing Lok Sabha while NCP has eight.

LS polls 2014: Bhaichung Bhutia, Moon Moon Sen to contest on TMC ticket

Former Indian football skipper Bhaichung Bhutia is set to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls on Trinamool Congress ticket, party Chief Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday.

Along with Bhutia, film personalities Moon Moon Sen, Deb and Shatabdi Roy will be contesting the elections on TMC ticket.
While Bhutia will contest the LS polls from Darjeeling, Sen, who is the daughter of Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, will be contesting from Bankura. Deb is in the fray from Ghatal in West Midnapore district.

The Election Commission today announced a nine-phase election to 16th Lok Sabha between April 7 and May 12.

CEC VS Sampath said that the counting of votes will be held on May 16 and will be over in a day.

Voters can check names in electoral roll on March 9

Special camps will be held across the country by the Election Commission March 9 so that voters can check if their names are present in the electoral rolls, Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath said Wednesday.

“The commission has received complaints that some people having EPIC (Elector Photo Identity Card) have in the past been denied the right to vote because their names were not found in the electoral rolls,” Sampath said.

The camps will be organised March 9 in all polling stations, where booth officers will have the electoral rolls displayed, with requisite number of application forms.

“We appeal to those who want to confirm their names to avail of this opportunity before the election, so that if any people want to get enrolled can file applications,” he said.

The commission also clarified that only those people will be allowed to vote at a polling station who are enrolled in the electoral roll there.

“EPIC is only an identity document and does not confer the right to vote on any person whose name is not in the electoral roll,” the chief election commissioner said.

The commission also made it clear that the law does not allow inclusion of names in the electoral rolls after 3 pm on the last date of filing nominations, till the electoral process is complete.

“All people are therefore advised that they must check that their names are in the electoral rolls”.

Voters can check their names on the website of the chief electoral officers. Names can also be checked through SMS through numbers provided by state election commissions.

“If the name of any person eligible to be enrolled is left out for some reason or has been wrongly deleted, such a person should immediately fill an application for inclusion of the name in Form 6 and hand it over to the booth level officer,” he said.

Varsity suspends 67 Kashmiri students for celebrating Pakistan’s victory over India

A prominent university in Uttar Pradesh has suspended 67 of its students from Kashmir and sent them back home for celebrating Pakistan`s victory over India in a Asia Cup match on Sunday.

The development was confirmed to the media by Dr Manzoor Ahmad the Vice-chancellor of Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (SVSU) on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, Ahmad said, “I was taken aback by such an unacceptable gesture of a few students.”

However, the top officials have now ordered an inquiry into the matter.

The group of Kashmiri students who were suspended had watched the India-Pakistan cricket match in the Madan Dhingra Hall in the University on Sunday. The group cheered every time an Indian wicket fell and later went on to celebrate the victory of Pakistan.

“The students were suspended for creating a ruckus on campus and shouting pro-Pakistan slogans, which caused tension on the campus,” RK Garg, the University Registrar, told a leading Hindi news channel.

The varsity authorities were expecting the students to apologise. But when that did not happen, they took the decision of suspending them.

The authorities had reported the matter to the police after realising that anger was brewing among the local students living in other hostels after the Kashmiri students celebrated Pakistan`s victory and shouted slogans in the campus.

It is learnt that more than 200 girls and boys from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir are pursuing various courses in the university. “The decision to suspend the students was taken by the varsity authorities without consulting the police or the district administration,” the SSP said.

Though few parents are happy with the step taken by the authorities. “There was a heated argument between some students but most students are innocent, so we think college did a good thing by sending them to valley in order to avoid any clashes,” said a parent.

Narendra Modi ordered Arvind Kejriwal’s detention, says AAP at large Delhi protest

Angry workers of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party faced water cannons from the police when they protested at the BJP’s headquarters in Delhi this evening.

The demonstration was held after Mr. Kejriwal was detained briefly by the police in Gujarat in the western town of Radhanpur, hours after national elections were announced.

The 45-year-old is on a four-day tour of Gujarat where he says he will conduct on-the-ground checks of the extensive development of the state that has been highlighted by Narendra Modi and the BJP in his campaign for prime minister.

Mr. Kejriwal was detained for failing to adhere to an election code of conduct that requires prior police permission. He described the encounter as harassment ordered by Mr. Modi.

“Kejriwal did not have permission for a rally or procession, hence was detained for violation of code of conduct which came into force from today,” the senior magistrate of the local district told.

“He was not there to hold any election rally. He had only gone there to watch and observe the development that Modi is claiming has taken place in the state,” countered Kumar Vishwas, a senior leader from the Aam Aadmi Party.

Allahabad HC orders transfer of Kanpur SSP; asks doctors to end strike

The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday ordered judicial probe into the 28th February Kanpur incident, which led to the doctors’ strike in Uttar Pradesh.

Taking suo moto cognisance of the incident, the High Court ordered transfer of SSP, Kanpur, Yashaswi Yadav.

The HC also directed the striking doctors to return to hospitals and continue their work.

Taking suo motu cognisance, the Lucknow bench comprising justices Imtiyaz Murtaza and Devendra Kumar Upadhaya clarified that the order of transfer is only to resolve the situation and should not be taken as a “stigma” on the officials, while requesting the doctors to resume their duties immediately.

The HC’s order comes after there was no positive outcome of the talks between Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and a team of doctors last night.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced to go on an all-India strike from Thursday.

The IMA gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the Akhilesh Yadav government to fulfil its demands– arrest of SP MLA Irfan Solanki allegedly involved in the Friday clash, action against SSP Yashasvi Yadav and withdrawal of charges against 24 junior doctors, who were granted bail last night but refused to come out of jail.

An IMA delegation yesterday President Pranab Mukherjee seeking action against Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanpur Yashaswi Yadav and the legislator.

Patients across Uttar Pradesh continued to suffer as the strike by doctors entered its sixth day. Junior doctors and other medical practitioners have struck work in many parts of the state following arrest of two dozen junior doctors in Kanpur after a scuffle with a Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator.

Congress still open for an alliance with TRS: Digvijay Singh

Congress on Wednesday said that it is still open for an alliance with K Chandrasekhar Rao’s Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) even after it ruled out the possibility of its merger with the grand old party ahead of the upcoming General Elections.

AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh tweeted this morning, “We are happy on 2nd June dream of statehood for Telangana will come true, now we must fulfill the promises made to Telangana & Seemandhra.”

On the issue of TRS ruling out a merger with Congress, Singh posted, “TRS ruling out merger is an issue with them. Would have welcomed merger as it was promised. We are opened for an alliance also.”

Through his tweets, Singh also rejected accusations of policy paralysis within the Congress-led government.

“Our government has brought the maximum number of bills and you say there’s policy paralysis,” his tweet said.

Singh also attacked AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, who he said had betrayed his mentor Anna Hazare.

“Arvind Kejriwal is a product of Anna Hazare’s agitation and he has already ditched Anna. No one knows Arvind Kejriwal’s ideology. Sometimes he makes pro-corporate statements, sometimes against them,” Singh said.

The reactions from the senior Congress leader came days after TRS led by KCR ruled out any possibility of merger with the grand old party ahead of the upcoming General Elections.

Addressing party members on Monday, Chandrasekhar Rao said, “No merger with Congress under any circumstance.”

Rao was critical of the attitude of the Congress and the Centre saying even before the ink on the President’s assent to the AP Reorganisation Bill had dried, the UPA government had come out with an Ordinance giving a special category status to the residuary state while denying it to the new state of Telangana.

This, he said, was an undemocratic move which would be challenged in the Supreme Court. He also said that the TRS had cooperated in the passage of the bill because it did not want to be seen as an obstacle in the creation of the new state.

Jayalalithaa’s alliance with Left almost over, say sources

Less than a fortnight after 11 parties stitched up a third front to take on the Congress and the BJP in the general elections beginning next month, it is coming apart at the seams with J Jayalalithaa refusing to give in to ally Left’s demand for six seats in a seat-sharing pact in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu chief minister has told the CPM and CPI that she is willing to give them only a seat apiece to contest in her state. The Left parties had in February announced that they were extending to this year’s elections, their alliance with her AIADMK in the assembly elections three years ago.

On her 66th birthday last week, Ms Jayalalithaa seemed to have forgotten that pact when she released a list of party candidates for all the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and the one seat in Puducherry. But she later said there would be changes to factor in her seat-sharing deal with the Left.
