Khurshid not fit as an External Affairs Minister

As the Lok Sabha elections are approaching, personal attacks by leaders have also increased. A day after Salman Khurshid launched a direct attack on Narendra Modi, the Union Minister stands by his comment and again on Wednesday, he calls Modi politically ‘impotent’. Can we call it a decent language when it comes from Salman Khurshid, a Foreign Minister and senior Congress leader? Look at the rowdy mindset of these representatives, one is calling Modi impotent whereas others want to crush the electronic media. These immature leaders are giving comments when their uncrowned prince wants to empower the people and women in particular, with various laws and rights which he forgot to provide in last 10 years.

Meanwhile, after Khurshid’s jibe, the Opposition came out to defend its PM nominee, launching a direct attack on Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. Khurshid said, some people came, attacked and went, and Modi government couldn’t protect. Is he not a strong man? He further stated, we don’t accuse you (Modi) of killing people… Hamara aarop hai ki tum napunsak ho. (Our accusation is that you are impotent). You couldn’t stop the killers,” he added. Napunsak is a term used for impotent men in Hindi. Modi can be the PM of India, but Muslims should not vote for him. These kinds of ridiculous utterances would have been avoided by senior leaders. It is sad that present politicians never make comments on what they will contribute to the country if they are elected, instead of commenting like primary school kids on the other peoliticians. It is strange that people holding high Government office should stoop so low to attack opposition leaders in such uncivilised language. And that too people who claim to have been educated in Harvard/Oxford, St. Stephens & Doon schools. Is this the Congress party which claims the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders who fought for country’s independence?

On the other hand, Rajnath Singh apologised for 2002 Gujarat riots but at this crucial stage, seeking apology is not going to favour his party. BJP president Rajnath Singh on Tuesday sought to bridge a trust deficit between his party and Muslims by saying that he was ready to apologise for any mistakes committed by the party in the past and urged the community to give the saffron outfit at least one chance. Singh’s remarks immediately sparked speculation that the BJP chief was referring to events like the 2002 Gujarat riots or Babri Masjid demolition. He told Muslims, “try us once. If we don’t come up to your expectations, don’t look at us ever again,” at the event ‘Modi for PM – Mission 272+ – Role of Muslims’. Though BJP leaders said Singh’s remarks did not amount to acceptance of culpability for the Gujarat riots and pointed out that the party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was exonerated by the courts, the outreach did generate ripples in political circles. On a similar note, but in less dramatic terms, leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley said BJP had been pleasantly surprised by the success of minority candidates fielded by it in states like Goa and Rajasthan. He said BJP stressed the principles of equality and security for all citizens.

Is there any Muslim leader ready to apologise for the systematic massacre of thousands of Kashmiri Pandits and the exiling of lakhs of them? Or, was that as usual “a conspiracy by cunning Hindus to make peaceful Muslims look bad”? Or maybe we will hear a sanctimonious “doesn’t attack an entire community for the actions of a few misguided souls”? Funny how these arguments were never allowed for Hindus! We should also wonder why those lakhs of Kashmiri pundits in exile for decades due to religious persecution never get a mention, while we are constantly bombarded with news of a relatively tiny number of Muslims in Muzaffarnagar refugee camps, caused by mutual fighting.

Is this general apology needed at all, when the courts have given clearance and termed it as ‘false allegations’? It only shows the magnanimity and their concern for all people of the country. Congress has a lot of questions to answer. The Gujarat riot has happened because of the train burnt at Godhra. No person is bold enough to burn a train. Who backed them and gave them the courage to burn a train? Who benefited from it? When the riots broke out, Modi rightly ordered to open a control room in his office to control the riot. He requested the army’s help and within 24 hours, the army reached Gujarat. He also asked the Congress governments in Maharashtra and MP to send reinforcement. The Maharashtra government sent the police force after 3 days. Then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh refused to send the Police force to the neighbouring state. Under which circumstances, he refused to send the police force to Gujarat? By this, the main mistakes were done by the Congress CMs and now they are blaming Modi for not handling the riot properly.

It is very sad that Congress and its ministers are making character assassination. One should fight elections by highlighting the achievements of their party. From this comment, it is very clear that Salman Khurshid does not have anything to say about Congress’s achievements. He is unfit to be an external affairs minister. Not only BJP, all other political parties should condemn Salman Khurshid’s comment made on Modi. Election Commissioner must ensure that these types of comments are not permitted and strict action should be taken on the political parties which are stooping down to this level.

‘Dil Maange More’ was a terrible choice: Soha Ali Khan

soha-ali-khanSoha Ali Khan still cannot figure out why she opted to make her debut with 2004 film `DilMaange More`, which had three actresses in the lead.

The 35-year-old actress, who was new to Bollywood at that time, said it was a terrible decision.

“I don`t know why I chose to make my debut with `DilMaange More`

The film had three leading ladies — me, Tulip Joshi and Ayesha Takia — opposite ShahidKapoor. I was fresh to Bollywood at that time because I had just come back from England and had no clue about hero-heroine dynamics in India,” Soha said here while discussing the portrayal of women in cinema and TV at an event.

Soha said she took the film because she found her character progressive because she dumps her boyfriend over her career.

“When I was asked a character out of three, I chose Neha because she is ambitious. At an young age of 21 she chooses her career over boyfriend. It was again a wrong decision taken by me because in Hindi films, actresses keep their partner over any other thing,” she said.

But the `War Chod Na Yaar` actress is happy that cinema has changed over the period and she gets to play strong characters.

Both are excited to see how the idea shapes up in the film “Kolkata Calling”, which is a collage of three stories set in the 70s and 80s, directed by MainakBhowmik.

Moonmoon said that Mainak was persistent that they did the scenes together.

“We two feature in one of the three stories and Raima appears in another story. So you might dub it as a film where all three of us are part of it.”

She said that she had earlier done ad shoots with Riya and a telefilm with Raima.

“However, this is the first time we have fully fleshed out characters. Maybe I am not exactly happy with my role, but the youth will identify with the subject,” Moonmoon said.

She said she would like to do new challenging roles, provided the young group of directors want her.

Riya, who had earned critical acclaim for her role in RituparnoGhosh`s `Noukadubi`, said, “Maa has three scenes in the film and they are intense ones.

Scene-wise the figure may be small but each frame is detailed and embedded with the story.”

Riya said the Sen women didn`t think about doing a film together, but since it is Mainak`s story, they agreed because he treated women`s issues and relationships very well.

“As we understand each other, Maa wishes to be around whenever I shoot for a film,” she said.

Riya`s role in the latest film of Srijit Mukherjee `Jaatiswar` also won praise from critics.

Hope to work with Ranbir Kapoor one day, says Amitabh Bachchan

“Ranbir has done a cameo but I have not shot with him. He is very popular and I can’t compare myself with him. Hope I get to work with him someday,” he told reporters during the trailer launch of ‘Bhootnath Returns’.

Amitabh says he enjoys working with new generation.

Sahara chief Subrata Roy fails to appear, SC issues non-bailable warrant

Subrata-RoyThe Supreme Court on Wednesday issued non bailable arrest warrant against Sahara Chief Subrata Roy for his failure to appear before it in connection with the case in which his two companies have been directed to refund Rs. 20,000 crore to investors.

“We had already declined yesterday Roy’s plea seeking exemption from personal appearance. He has not appeared even today and we are issuing non bailable warrant returnable for March 4,” a bench comprising justices K S Radhakrishnan and J S Khehar said.

At the outset when senior advocate Ram Jethmalani, appearing for Roy, informed the court that he has been unable to appear because of the ill health of his 95-year-old mother, the bench shot back “the arms of this court are very long. Only we had refused your plea for exemption from personal appearance. We will issue the non bailable warrant. This is the Supreme Court of the land.”

“Yesterday we told you that we are not inclined to exempt him from personal appearance. If other directors can appear, why can’t you?,” the bench said.

The court had on February 20 come down heavily on the Sahara group for not refunding Rs. 20,000 crore of investors money despite its order and summoned Roy, Ravi Shankar Dubey, Ashok Roy Choudhary and Vandana Bhargava, directors of its firms–Sahara India Real Estate Corp Ltd (SIREC) and Sahara India Housing Investment Corp Ltd (SHIC) to be personally present before it.

Jethmalani sought to explain Roy’s non-appearance by saying that he was sitting on the bed side of his ailing mother and holding her hand.

He also placed before the bench the medical certificate on Roy’s mother’s ill health and said on all earlier occasions, the Sahara Chief had complied with the apex court’s order.

However, the bench said, “for last two years we have been seeing what’s happening in the matter”.

The apex court had yesterday rejected Roy’s plea seeking exemption from personal appearance and had asked him to be present before it today.

The bench had made it clear that “rule of law” has to be maintained and Roy has to comply with its February 20 order in which he along with three directors of his companies have been summoned to appear.

During the hearing earlier, the bench had observed that SEBI could go ahead with the sale of properties of the group whose sale deeds were handed over to the market regulator to recover Rs 20,000 crore.

“Those properties you can sell. We allow you to sell them and recover the money. If they are encumbered properties then you can file criminal case against the company. The case must be brought to a logical conclusion,” the bench had said.

The bench had raised question on the way the group has been defying its order for the last one-and-a-half years.

The bench had said SEBI can put those properties on auction and get the money after the market regulator had said that let the company itself sell the properties and deposit the money.

The apex court in its judgement of August 31, 2012 had directed SEBI to attach properties and recover the money.

Sending a clear message that the court is not “helpless” in taking action for flouting its directions, the apex court had on November 21 last year barred Roy from leaving the country and also restrained the group from selling any of its properties.

Congress-TRS merger imminent?

AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh on Wednesday hinted that a merger between the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) was a matter of time.

Digvijay said that “TRS has indicated merger with the Congress.” He added details of the planned merger are being worked out.

Digvijay had earlier also hinted that the TRS – the party which was born on the cause of creation of Telangana – will merge with the Congress. He had said that the consultation process between the two parties was over.

The TRS had earlier, however, denied any such headway. Party chief K Chandrasekhar Rao had said that nothing was finalised so far on alliance or merger talks with the Congress.

The remarks came on a day when the Centre was likely to decide on the next government in Andhra Pradesh.

Sources added that state leaders Chiranjeevi and Kanna Lakshminarayana are leading the race for CM’s post.

Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar won’t be executed: Centre to SC

The central government on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that it will not execute 1993 Delhi blast convict Devender Pal Singh Bhullar on grounds of his health.

The decision was conveyed to the apex court after Bhullar’s wife filed a mercy petition, which is in the process of consideration.
The Centre has asked for 14 days time period from SC to convey the final decision in the matter. The next hearing in the case is scheduled on March 10.

Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung had recommended commutation of his sentence on January 6.

Bhullar was convicted in 1993 bomb blasts at Youth Congress office in New Delhi which killed nine people. He was awarded a death penalty in 2001.

After his review petition was dismissed, he filed for mercy petition in 2003 which was dismissed in 2011.

Was talking about Narendra Modi’s impotency in politics: Salman Khurshid

Salman-KhurshidExternal Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Wednesday dismissed criticism of his remarks calling Narendra Modi “impotent”, saying the BJP had misconstrued his comments.

“If he (Modi) does not understand these words then I can send him a dictionary,” Khurshid said after the BJP reacted sharply to his remarks, saying the Union minister had lost his mental balance.

Clarifying his remarks on the BJP’s PM candidate for 2014 polls, Khurshid said, “You have another word for incapacity? For lack of strength? I talked about impotency in politics.”

“I am not his doctor; I didn’t physically examine him. I meant that he lacks strength to do what he could have done,” the Congress leader said further.

However, refusing to apologise for the choice of his words Khurshid asked: “Would I call him potent? No other word expressed my feeling better. He should accept what he did in 2002.”

Khurshid also targeted BJP chief Rajnath Singh for saying yesterday that he was ready to seek forgiveness for any mistakes committed in the past by the BJP.

“Rajnath Singh must be regretful; he is a man of character. He’s in a spot because his PM candidate isn’t accepting the blame,” Khurshid said.

“First he should accept; apologising comes later,” the minister suggested, adding “he is offering to apologise to Muslims. Why? He should apologise to the nation.”.

Reacting to Khurshid’s remarks yesterday, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain had tweeted this morning, “Filthy words used 4 political opponent, seems foreign education has taken away Indian values of ‘Tehzeeb’ & ‘Tameez’ frm Sh Salman Khurshid (sic).”

“Is the language used by Sh Salman Khurshid a reflection of the so called guidance being given to Congress leaders by Sh Rahul Gandhi? (sic)”

TCS employee sexually assaulted, murdered: Tamil Nadu police

In a sensational disclosure, two persons arrested by the Tamil Nadu police on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) woman employee have confessed of sexually assaulting the victim, who went missing last week and was later found dead in Kanchipuram area, before stabbing her to death.

Police was investigating the suspected murder of Uma Maheswari as the post-mortem report revealed a deep wound.

Maheshwari, 24, was reported missing since February 13 evening after she left office at IT Park at Siruseri, 20 km from Chennai. A body, later found in a bush by passers-by, was identified as hers.

As per an English news channel, the state police today issued a press release, which says that the arrested persons have been identified as Ram Mandal and Utham Mandal.

“The accused have confessed that they sexually assaulted the victim and took away fer mobile phone and credit card,” the press release said further.

The accused will be now be reportedly produced before the court tomorrow.

Investigation in the case was on Sunday transferred to the Tamil Nadu Police Crime Branch-CID (CB-CID) after Kelambakkam Police Station Inspector Subbaiah was suspended for dereliction of duty. The officer reportedly did not file complaint or follow- up on the missing person’s case and failed to provide adequate security within the SIPCOT IT Park .

According to the company, she was employed in the accounts section for the past one year and was liked by her colleagues. Uma’s decomposed body was traced after passers-by alerted the police after getting a strong smell emanating from behind a bush in a desolate place near the office complex.

The office CCTV footage showed that Uma left alone half an hour early before her shift ends.

Earlier, the Kanchipuram district police had registered a case of suspicious death and were investigating the matter. The police said they did not rule out rape.

Uma went missing after she left the office at IT Park at Siruseri, 20 km from Chennai. Police then recovered the body and summoned Uma’s colleagues and father to identify the body since a missing person complaint was filed by the TCS.

What superpower? I will rather make a woman safe in a bus, says Rahul Gandhi

Rahul-Gandhi-PMCongress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he would rather make women travelling in a bus safe than have India being a superpower.

“Big statements are made about India being a superpower. What superpower? I will rather make a woman safe in a bus than (India) being a superpower,” Gandhi said in an interaction with students at the Don Bosco University here.

“Are you comfortable in a bus? Are you treated well on the streets when you walk?” he asked girl students.

“It is complete nonsense. There is no way this country can be a superpower if Kakoli (a student who asked him a question on respecting women) is feeling scared to go in a bus. How can we call ourselves a superpower if a young girl of this country is scared to go in a bus?” he asked.

“Fifty per cent of the country are women and if you are to ask any of them whether they feel comfortable in a bus, whether they can walk around comfortably, whether India treats them comfortably … Every single one will say no, they do not feel safe and are not represented in our political system,” the Congress leader said.

“And I think boys should think about this. It is at the end of the day that boys who treat women badly. This is a message to them … These women are 50 per cent of the country, these are mothers and sisters,” Gandhi said.

“Women go every day in a bus, go for an interview and are treated badly. When you go for an interview, I am sorry to say, but if you are a woman you can expect to be discriminated. You can also expect discrimination when you are working. Why don’t we talk about that?” Gandhi asked.

“In my mind I have 45 years of experience that women are at least smarter than men. They are more intelligent than men, more capable than men. Yet we spend our whole time in this country every day disrespecting them and we talk about super power,” the Congress leader said.

“Sorry to be angry, but I am emotional about this because I have been brought up in a family where women are treated well, they are powerful,” he said.

“My father (Rajiv Gandhi) treated my sister exactly as me. My grandmother (Indira Gandhi) was the boss of the family. My father listened to my grandmother. So that is the family where I come from,” he said.

“People focus when there is a rape case. The entire country gets up and focuses on the rape case. That is very important because these type of crimes should be punished. But what we don’t focus on is the everyday problem women face,” Gandhi said.

“How many women do you see in Parliament, in Vidhan Sabhas, business? So it’s not only about rape. Rape is the extreme manifestation. It is the suffering of the women every single day,” he said.
