After AAP’s ambitious Lok Sabha plan, first voices of dissent

AAPThe Aam Aadmi Party’s first list of 20 potential giant-killers for the general elections due by May seems to have ruffled some feathers internally. The Congress and the BJP are, however, dismissive.

On Sunday, Arvind Kejriwal’s party lined up some of its big names to contest against the likes of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, union ministers Kapil Sibal, Salman Khurshid and Manish Tewari, the BJP’s Nitin Gadkari and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

AAP had sought applications for Lok Sabha ticket. Releasing the list, Mr. Kejriwal’s trusted aide Manish Sisodia said, “Our aim is to send the common man of this country to Parliament. We want good people of this country to be there. This is a new experiment that people of this country are looking forward to.”

But already there is discontent. In Nagpur, where AAP has chosen to air-drop prominent leader Anjali Damania of Mumbai to contest against former BJP president Nitin Gadkari, a local supporter called Rupa Kulkarni said, “The AAP cabinet of Nagpur had approached me over the last two months to convince me to contest elections from this seat. Finally, I made up my mind and agreed.”

She did not oppose Ms. Damania’s nomination but added, “The claims that have been given by AAP that the candidates will be selected on the public mandate within several local districts have not been done. This first list does not have common people in it.”

In Pune, where the party has picked a candidate called Subhash Vaare to contest the seat currently represented by “tainted” Congress leader Suresh Kalmadi, another local, Arun Bhatia, has reportedly threatened that he will contest as an Independent.

The list released yesterday confirms that senior AAP leader Kumar Vishwas, who has already been campaigning, will take on Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. In the same state, AAP’s Mukul Tripathi will contest against Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid in Farrukhabad, while Baba Hardev Singh will fight Mulayam Singh Yadav in Mainpuri.

In Delhi, journalist-turned-politician Ashutosh will take on Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal in his Chandni Chowk constituency. Mr. Sibal seemed unperturbed, only saying, “Someone has to come, and that person will campaign… To them, I say good luck.”

Mr. Khurshid’s response: “Is it a party or was it a party in Delhi?”

Among other prominent names on the AAP list are social activist Medha Patkar, senior leader Yogendra Yadav and former banker Meera Sanyal.

Also on that list are tribal rights activist Soni Sori, senior advocate HS Phulka and Jarnail Singh, who infamously hurled a shoe at Union minister P Chidambaram during a press conference in 2009.

The mini-bus was packed with passengers, they said.

Unidentified woman’s shocking revelation, says ‘I am Asaram’s wife’

In some fresh trouble for Asaram who is accused of raping a minor girl in his Jodhpur ashram last year, an unidentified woman reached Jodhpur court on Monday claiming she is Asaram’s wife.
However, the lady is reportedly married in Jodhpur and hasn’t filed any sexual harassment case against Asaram till now. It is not clear what her intentions are and whether she will become a party in the sexual assault case against Asaram.
On February 8, Jodhpur District and Sessions Court Judge Manoj Kumar Vyas had framed charges against the self-styled godman under sections 342 (for wrongful confinement), 354A (sexual harassment), 370(4) (trafficking), 376(2)f (rape on a woman when she is under twelve years of age), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509/34 and 120 (B) (Criminal conspiracy).
He was also charged under section 23 and 26 of Juvenile Justice Act and section 5(f)/6, 5(g)/6 and 7/8 of POCSO Act. The charges attract a maximum of life imprisonment.
Two other accused Shiva and Prakash were also framed under the same sections except section 109/120(B) instead of plain 120(B) and section 7/8 read with section 17 of POCSO Act instead of plain section 7/8 of POCSO Act. They were however not charged under JJ Act.
The defence had said they were mulling filing a petition against the order.
“Since, the charges on Asaram are redundant, we are exploring the possibilities of filing a revision petition,” Pradeep Choudhary, counsel for Asaram had said.

When Alia Bhatt took Imtiaz Ali for Shopping

alia-bhatt-still-from-highway Imtiaz Ali is on cloud nine with the response his road drama `Highway` received at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.

`Highway`, starring Alia Bhatt and RandeepHooda in the lead, premiered in the panorama section of the prestigious festival on February 13, a week ahead of its world release this Friday.

The festival concluded last night.

“I have never been invited to a film festival before. I thought this would not be the right platform to showcase my film because the audience were European mostly.

But it was heartwarming to see that despite not knowing the language, they related to the movie`s story line. It felt great to be applauded by Berlin audience,” Imtiaz said

Imtiaz, 42, said while he was nervous about the screening and the audience`s response, his leading lady Alia was concerned about his red carpet outing.

The premiere was also attended by music composer A R Rahman and actor RandeepHooda.

“Alia was concerned about what I was going to wear. She took me to shopping and made sure that I buy a new pair of jeans and shoes. I bought it and teamed it up with a band gala,” Imtiaz said.

The director said during their shopping trip to a mall, he was surprised to see that all the three screenings of `Highway` were housefull.

Govinda grateful to younger actors who copy his style

govinda04Ranveer Singh is an unabashed fan of senior actor Govinda and he has often copied his style for songs and performances. Govinda says he is grateful to such young talents who feel his inimitable dancing style is worth being imitated.

Ranveer is getting a chance to match steps with Govinda in Shaad Ali`s “Kill Dil”.

In fact, Ranveer even paid a tribute to Govinda`s dancing skills in Sanjay LeelaBhansali`s “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela”, as well as at an awards function.

Showering praise on the younger talent, Govinda said: “Yes, I saw Ranveer in the song `Ishqyaundhishqyaun` in `…Ram-Leela`. He was in full form. I am grateful to the younger actors who think my style is worthy of being copied.”

The duo is said to be sharing a great bonding on the set of the Shaad Ali film.

“Shaad now plans to incorporate a full-on Govinda-Ranveer dance number where the fan will try to match steps with his idol,” said a source associated with “Kill Dill”.

Meanwhile, Govinda has lately lost a lot of weight to look convincing as RanbirKapoor`s father in AnuragBasu`s “JaggaJasoos”.

Stop passing the buck

Railways are considered as the lifeline of Mumbai. Everyday, the city’s suburban trains carry around six million passengers. The trains get overcrowded during the peak hours in morning and evening as officegoers and students try to enter inside it. The capacity of the train is only 1,500 passengers but it increases to 8,500 during the peak hours which prove fatal for commuters. Many times people try to board an overcrowded train as they stand on footboards. Later, many of them fall on the tracks after being hit by the poles. The worst part is that these commuters don’t even receive first-aid treatment for several hours. Often several passengers lose their lives as they don’t get any treatment during the golden hour. Golden hours means the hour immediately following traumatic injury in which medical treatment to prevent irreversible damage and optimise the chance of survival is most effective.

Sometimes commuters fall from the trains while trying to board a running train. The alarming rise in the number of accidents puts a question mark about the efficiency of railways.

Many times, commuters behave as if it was the last train of the day and they make every attempt to board it. Since ambulances are not available at several stations hence commuters don’t even get the treatment in time. As per rules, the railways have to send the accident victim to the nearest hospital available within 5 km radius. But often this is not done due to the lackadaisical attitude of the railways. If a government hospital was not found in a radius of five kilometres, the victim has to be admitted to a private hospital with the railways bearing the cost of the treatment. Often railways fail to take an initiative and pass the buck.

Last month, Monika More (16) had lost her both arms after falling off a moving train at Ghatkopar, an eastern suburb. She fell in the gap between the platform and footboard on the tracks. Monica was rushed to hospital by two commuters in an auto rickshaw. On the other hand, the Railway officials washed their hands off by failing to provide ambulances. Doctors who were treating Monica said that she would have lost her life due to excessive bleeding if she had not been rushed to hospital. The railways have categorized Monica More’s accident as a case of trespassing, raising the hackles of activists.
Even as help was pouring in for Monica through the week, 31-year-old electrician Tanvir Shaikh lost both legs when he slipped through the gap between the platform and a coach at Kurla station on Wednesday evening. As per a survey, it was found that Kurla and Kalyan on the central route and the stretch between Jogeshwari and Borivali on the Western route are the deadliest zones where more accidents occur.

In order to defend itself both, Western Railway and Central Railway filed separate affidavits in the Bombay High Court held the passenger responsible for the rising railway accidents but they failed to mention anything about increasing the height of platforms. They mentioned that overcrowding, impatient passengers and expensive bus fares responsible for the poor travelling conditions in the metropolis. According to them, the BEST bus fares were 6 to 7 times higher than railways which forces people to opt for commuting in suburban trains. They suggested that bus fares must be reduced and brought in tandem with the trains which will provide people another alternative for commuting. Instead of blaming the commuters for rail accidents railways must take steps to ensure the safety of passengers while commuting.

They should raise the height of platforms and provide ambulances at all the stations so that large number of lives could be saved during emergency. They could also start a trauma care centre at the station itself which will provide the victim with necessary first aid before he is taken to hospital. Finally, commuters too should behave responsibly and should not be in a hurry to catch running trains which is responsible for many mishaps. They must use overbridge and avoid crossing tracks. They should refrain from commuting in crowded trains and board the next train. Passengers should avoid commuting on footboards of trains as there is a possibility of them falling on the tracks. Railways have already started raising the height of platforms at some stations. Finally, railway accidents can be reduced if passengers and railways take some initiative to avoid mishaps.

Rakesh Maria a right choice for the coveted post

Finally, after a lot of speculation and hue and cry, Rakesh Maria has been appointed as the new Police Commissioner of Mumbai. I appreciate the state government’s decision to appoint Maria for the top job. Rakesh Maria was one of the deserving candidates among the list of the probable candidates for the coveted post. Rakesh Maria had served as the Chief of Anti Terrorist Squad so he is aware about the crime incidents occurring in the metropolis.
Rakesh Maria, who belongs to the 1981 batch of the Indian Police Service, cracked the twin blasts of Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazar in 2003. Maria also played a key role in arresting most of the accused responsible for the 1993 serial blasts. He probed the German Bakery blast case, the 2011 serial blasts and the Jangali Maharaj Road blast case.
Before Maria’s appointment as the new CP there were reports about the government trying to derive political mileage out of this issue by proposing the name of Vijay Kamble a Dalit officer to woo the Dalit community. Even Javed Ahmed’s name was been discussed. Congress wanted Vijay Kamble and Javed Ahmed to become the new police commissioner while Rakesh Maria was NCP’s choice. Thus one say that Congress had to bow down before its ruling partner NCP by appointing Maria as the new Police Commissioner.
Congress has played its cards well by appointing Maria for the top job and also pleased Vijay Kamble and Javed Ahmed by promoting them. Kamble has been appointed as the new police commissioner of Thane while Javed Ahmed has been promoted to Director General of Police. If Congress had appointed Vijay Kamble as the new CP then it would have given an opportunity for the BJP to criticise the party for indulging in vote bank politics.
Maria’s selection is bound to raise eyebrows, as the Police Establishment Board had recommended the names of three candidates (Kamble, Mathur and Maria) based on seniority, and Maria was the junior-most in that list. Although junior among the three contenders, Maria’s excellent record in crime detection and his knowledge of Mumbai and its underbelly stood him in good stead.
On Saturday, night a meeting was held between Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Home Minister R.R. Patil for discussing about the name of the candidate for the police commissioner’s job. Finally, Maria’s name was finalised for the top job which was lying vacant since Former Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh resigned and joined the Bhartiya Janta Party.
Finally, the government took the right decision by appointing Rakesh Maria as the new Police Commissioner because he is a deserving candidate and also is aware about the city’s crime activities. Through his vast experience Maria can play a vital role in curbing crimes in the city. I wish Rakesh Maria all success in his future endeavour.

Politics behind Maria’s selection?

rakesh_mariaVijay Kamble and Ahmed Javed are disappointed with Rakesh Maria’s selection as the new Mumbai Police chief. Despite being seniors the duo has been sidelined for the coveted post.

The appointment of Rakesh Maria as the new Mumbai Police Commissioner has not gone down well with Vijay Kamble and Ahmed Javed who too were in fray for the top post. Even though Kamble and Javed have been promoted as the chief Police Commissioner of Thane and Director General of Police but they alleged that there has been too much political intervention in the selection process for the new Police Commissioner’s post. IPS officer Javed said that had the decision been taken in April 2013 when former CP Satyapal Singh was due for promotion, he would have been the natural choice.

After the appointment of Rakesh Maria for the coveted post Ahmed Javed said,” I am not disappointed with Rakesh Maria but with the manner in which the government is functioning. Too much political intervention is hampering the credibility of the police force. The delay in naming Mumbai’s top cop cost me the position that would have come to me automatically due to my seniority.”

The Congress had proposed the name of Vijay Kamble and Javed Ahmed for the post of the Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria was NCP’s choice. The Congress was banking on the candidature of Vijay Kamble to garner Dalit Votes. However, they backed off as the opposition would have criticised them for indulging in vote bank politics.

A close source revealed that Kamble was thinking about announcing voluntary retirement as he was unhappy after being sidelined for the post of police commissioner.

Till Saturday evening, Kamble was the front-runner for the post. “But a late evening meeting between home minister RR Patil and chief minister Prithviraj Chavan abruptly changed the game,” the source added

When asked Sanjay Patil, Mumbai president of NCP whether the appointment of Maria has been politically motivated, he said, “I can’t comment about this issue. Its better you should ask the same question to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan or State Home Minister R.R. Patil.”

Rakesh Maria, who belongs to the 1981 batch of the Indian Police Service, played a key role in arresting most of the accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. He has headed probes into 1993 Mumbai blasts and 26/11 attacks on the city.

Along with the appointment of new Police Commissioner, 86 officers also have been transferred across the state. Himanshu Roy is being appointed as the ATS chief. K.L Prasad has been appointed as the new Police Commissioner of Navi Mumbai. Rajendra Singh has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police of Aurangabad.

Medha Patkar poses new challenge to Congress-NCP alliance in Mumbai

Medha-PatkarThe candidature of social activist Medha Patkar from Mumbai North East Lok Sabha constituency on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket comes as bad news for Congress-NCP which made a clean sweep in the financial capital in 2009.

Patkar’s name is in the list of 20 candidates announced by AAP for the general elections today.

NCP sources said sitting MP Sanjay Patil, who is also the president of the Sharad Pawar-led party’s city unit, was facing resentment from inside the party and from Congress.

“Congress accused him of sabotaging its candidates in the municipal elections two years ago. NCP corporators and senior leaders are also not in favour of him,” a source said.

The constituency has a sizable Dalit population, which had helped RPI leader Ramdas Athawale in the past. But now Athawale, recently elected to Rajya Sabha, is with Shiv Sena-BJP alliance.
Patkar, who shot to fame with Narmada Bachao Andolan, has some base in the constituency as her National Alliance of Peoples Movement (NAPM) works in the slums of Mankhurd.

“We had done well in this area in the last Lok Sabha polls, but Patkar will eat into our votes. Ghatkopar East and West as well as Mulund have Gujarati population, and BJP is likely to do well there given the Narendra Modi factor,” said an NCP leader.

Former MP and BJP leader Kirit Somaiya could be the Sena-BJP alliance’s candidate from the constituency.

NCP sources said the party had already realised that it could be difficult to retain this seat, but Patkar’s entry had made it difficult further.
