Rishabh is a very big and integral part of our plan for the next few months: Dravid

India head coach Rahul Dravid has made it clear that the under-fire Rishabh Pant is a ”big” and ”integral” part of the set-up heading into the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Pant, who led the side in the five-match series against South Africa that ended in a 2-2 draw after the last game was called off due to rain, managed only 58 runs in the five innings which led to some questions being raised about his place in the shortest format.

However, Dravid was very clear that Pant is going nowhere.

”He would have liked to score a few more runs but it is not concerning him. Certainly, he is a very big part of our plans going ahead in the next few months,” Dravid said during the post-match press conference.

He was categorical that he won’t judge someone based on one series — whether it is batting form or captaincy.

”I just don’t want to be critical. In the middle overs, you need people to play a slightly attacking brand of cricket, to take the game on a little more. Sometimes it’s very hard to judge it based on two or three games,” the head coach said.

Dravid was impressed with Pant’s strike rate of 158 plus during the IPL where he managed an underwhelming 340 runs for the Delhi Capitals.

”I think he had a pretty good IPL in terms of strike rate even though it might not have looked good on averages. In IPL, he looked to move up a little bit (in terms of averages), and probably three years ago he was on those numbers. ”We are hoping that we can get those numbers from him at the international level.” Pants is a high-risk game that comes with a price and the coach is ready to pay the price by looking at the bigger picture.

”In the process (of playing an attacking game), he might go wrong in a few games but he remains an integral part of our batting line-up with the power he has, and the fact that he is a left-hander is important to us in the middle overs, he played some good knocks,” he said.

About his captaincy, Dravid felt that Pant did well considering that he led the side back in the series from 0-2 down.

”To bring a team back from 0-2 down and to level it at 2-2 and give us a chance to win was good. Captaincy is not about wins and losses only. He (Pant) is a young captain, growing as a leader. It is too early to judge him and you don’t want to do that after one series,” Dravid was clear in his thought process.

”It was nice to see he has got opportunities to lead, keep, and bat. He had a lot of load on him but gaining from that experience and credit to him for ensuring that we went from 0-2 down to 2-2,” the coach was all praise for the stand-in skipper.

Agnipath Scheme result of ‘rough calculation’ of new recruitment

Lok Sabha MP and Congress leader Manish Tewari on Monday stood in support of the concerns expressed by protestors against the ‘Agnipath scheme’, a recruitment scheme aiming to induct youth into the Army.

He said that the scheme is a result of ‘rough calculation’ of the impact of new recruitment paradigms.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Tewari wrote, “As an MP from a rural constituency, I stand with the concerns/fears of the youth’s desires of joining the armed forces. Politics apart-rough calculation of the impact of new recruitment paradigms on even largest employer army shows that the issue not insurmountable if retirees are transitioned to CAPF’s/SPF’s.”

About four days ago, the Congress MP empathised with youth who have concerns over the Agnipath recruitment process. “I do empathise with youth who have concerns over Agnipath Recruitment Process.

The reality is India needs a younger armed force with lighter human footprint savvy on technology and equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry. Armed forces of Union shouldn’t be an employment guarantee programme,” he said in a tweet.

The top military leadership of the country on Sunday stressed that the main motive behind implementing the Agnipath scheme was to bring in more youth into the forces.

Lieutenant General Anil Puri, Additional Secretary, Department of Military Affairs speaking on the Agnipath scheme, while addressing a press conference, said, “This reform was long pending.” Lt General Puri said, “The announcements regarding the reservations for ‘Agniveers announced by the different ministries and departments were pre-planned and not in reaction to the arson that happened after the Agnipath scheme announcement.”

He said Agniveers will get compensation for one crore rupees if he sacrifices his life in service of the nation. Lt General Puri said, “The ‘Agniveers would get the same allowance in areas like Siachen and other areas which are applicable to the regular soldiers serving at present.”

He said, “In next 4-5 years, intake of soldiers will be 50,000-60,000 and will increase to 90,000 – 1 lakh subsequently.”

He said the process to recruit 46,000 Agniveers started to analyse the scheme and to build up infrastructure capacity.

Air Marshal Suraj Jha, Air Officer Personnel said IAF will begin Recruitment under Agniveers under Agnipath Scheme from June 24 onwards.

Air Marshal Jha said the first batch would be enrolled by December and training would commence by December 30.

Meanwhile, Kupwara Police launched a joint anti-terrorist operation alongwith the Army’s 28RR on the disclosure of an arrested terrorist Showket Ahmed Sheikh. Security forces are on alert as there have been incidents of targeted killings in Kashmir and sections of the minority community had threatened that they were preparing for mass migration if the government did not relocate them.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who was on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, had urged the people not to allow inimical forces to break the social fabric and noted that the electoral process is likely to begin in the coming months. Rajnath Singh also made a veiled reference to Pakistan and said some forces were trying to sow seeds of hatred in the Union Territory.

He said there is a foreign conspiracy in the recent targeted killings in Jammu and Kashmir and such attempts would be foiled. He was addressing an event held here today to mark the 200th anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh’s ‘Rajyaabhishek ceremony’.

“I appeal to the people here that the social fabric of Jammu and Kashmir should never break rising above religion, caste. There are some forces here which have always tried to break this social fabric and promoted the radicals. Recently, attempts were made again to ignite hatred in J-K,” he said.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib blamed poor batting for loss in 1st Test

After facing a seven-wicket defeat against West Indies, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan blamed the batters for their dismal show.

Kemar Roach and captain Kraigg Brathwaite shined for West Indies, helping them seal a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first Test of the two-match series at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Sunday.

In the first innings, Bangladesh were bowled out at 103, with only Shakib playing a decent knock of 51 runs.

“(The toss) Played a significant part, but we can’t complain. If we could have applied ourselves better, it would have been ideal. The wicket was pretty good after that. That one session killed the game for us. Happy with the way the bowlers performed.

(Batting failures) Not acceptable, we have been doing that quite regularly in the Tests. Batsmen need to find ways to score runs.

That’s a simple equation that we need to work on,” said Shakib in a post-match presentation. “(On the partnership with Nurul) A lot to be gained from that, Nurul was under pressure, the way he applied himself showed a lot of character.

Some of the other batters can take the same approach and play good cricket in the next game. All our bowlers bowled their hearts out. Batting let us down and hopefully, we come back well in the next game.

I was positive in my batting, I kept it simple and that’s how I was successful,” he added. Bangladesh scored 245 runs in their second innings with Shakib playing a knock of 63 runs while Nurul Hasan scored 64 runs.

It was a memorable outing for the Windies, outplaying Bangladesh in all departments. With this win, they have taken a 1-0 lead in the series. Chasing a target of 84, Windies lost captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Raymon Reifer for single-digit scores in the second over.

All-rounder Nkrumah Bonner was dismissed next for a duck, sinking WI to 9/3. John Campbell and Jermaine Blackwood took control of the West Indies innings next. The duo ensured that their side achieved the target without any further hiccup by seven wickets.

Campbell finished with an unbeaten 58 while Blackwood with 26. Both the teams will be squaring off for the second Test of the two-match series, at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Saint Lucia on Friday.

At least four volunteers of a social organisation were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire at their car in Pakistan’s North Waziristan district on Sunday, a local media reported.

District Police and residents said that unidentified men on two motorcycles opened fire on a moving car in the Haiderkhel area of Mirali tehsil, Dawn reported.

All the deceased activists were part of a social organisation, the Youth of Waziristan.

They all have been identified as Waqar Ahmad Dawar, Sunaid Ahmad Dawar, Aamad Dawar and Assadullah.

The bodies were shifted to a hospital in Mirali town. The Youth Organisation, formed after the Zarb-i-Azb military operation, has worked for the restoration of peace in the militancy-hit region.

The organisation has also staged a protest and sit-in against target killings, reported Dawn. About two years ago security agencies took action against a sit-in organised by the Youth of Waziristan and arrested its founding president, Noor Islam Dawar.

Meanwhile, another case has been registered in the town, where bullet-riddled bodies of two people, who were kidnapped from a market, were found near the Tochi river, also called the Gambila River on Sunday.

The residents in Mirali town said that the unidentified gunmen had kidnapped the two people from Khadi market.

Till now no group has so far claimed responsibility for the killing. The deceased belonged to the Lakki Marwat district.

Mumbai coach Muzumdar acknowledged his wonderful time’s with new gen team

Anmol Muzumdar, Ranji Trophy 2022, Mumbai vs Madhya pradesh

Mumbai head coach Amol Muzumdar said that it has been wonderful working with the new generation of cricketers of the team and shaping them.

Mumbai, who are 41-time champions have reached their 47th Ranji Trophy final overall and their first since 2016-17. Their semi-final tie against Uttar Pradesh was a draw, with Mumbai advancing on basis of their first-innings lead. They will face off against Madhya Pradesh in the finals.

“The only difference [in this generation’s approach] is how you take it and how you bring it to the dressing room; how you keep that dressing room light. It should not be heavy. That has been the goal,” ESPNCricinfo quoted the former Mumbai legend as saying.

“This generation has been fantastic. I keep telling them if you keep working on your game, the world is your oyster. There is no looking back. Look at the opportunity. It has been wonderful working with them, and just shaping them. Seeing them grow gives me immense pleasure,” he added.

Muzumdar feels that the bold next generation of the team has the ‘sense of the Bombay legacy’ and every player values the coveted Mumbai cap.

Getting the team on track in red-ball cricket was a priority of his since taking up the job as a head coach from Ramesh Powar in June 2021 and month of hard work have borne fruit now that his team is in the finals.

The head coach’s mantra for success was simple: to follow the process that is working in the dressing room and show complete commitment till the very end.

“This is a different generation you are dealing with here. I personally feel it is another game [the final]…We have not looked at the quarter-finals or the semi-finals or the finals. There are systems that are working in the dressing room, and we would like to follow that till the last ball is bowled in the Ranji Trophy season. That was our commitment at the start of the season,” he said.

The progress of several individual players has also given him a lot of pleasure as many players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suved Parkar, Sarfaraz Khan, Shams Mulani, Arman Jaffer, Hardik Tamore have stepped up for Mumbai and delivered big scores or great bowling spells.

The team was extremely particular about managing the workload of bowlers and preventing burnout. A five-bowler strategy was decided before the start of the season.

The effort has paid off as left-arm spinner Shams Mulani now leads the bowling charts with 37 wickets, the pace duo of Dhawal Kulkarni and Mohit Avasthi have accounted for 26 wickets and off-spinner Tanush Kotian has 18 wickets to his name. All of these players have played all the five matches of the tournament so far.

Mazumdar is impressed with his bowling unit.

“The bowling unit has been fantastic, they have been putting in the effort throughout – 365 days. Trainers and physios have done a fantastic job. Dhawal has led the pack nicely. He has been the sort of a guy who mentors and takes them under the wings and gives them the freedom to do that,” he said.

“Shams Mulani’s… terrific performance this season. He did not pick up a wicket this match [semi-final], but he has been wonderful this season so far. There are some tweaks that have happened during the season and that’s paying off,” he added.

Keeping the team motivated this season was also a challenge as Ranji was played in two phases this time around, but the head coach said that team bonding sessions with National Security Guards in October last year and in-season fitness programmes during April-May for players not part of IPL helped.

With the final set to take place on June 22, Muzumdar is not fretting over his opponent or its head coach Chandrakant Pandit, who had led Mumbai and Vidarbha to two Ranji Trophy titles. Pandit was also the team’s head coach back in 2016-17 when Mumbai had last reached the Ranji final.

Pandit was also the team’s head coach back in 2016-17 when Mumbai had last reached the Ranji final.

“There are a lot of things that happen in a season – a lot of ups and downs, out-of-form players and so many things to deal with. We would like to follow our process and focus on what we have done in our dressing room,” he said.
