Indian investors deceived from nearly Rs 1,000 cr to false crypto exchanges.

Fake cryptocurrency exchanges have duped Indian investors of more than $128 million (nearly Rs 1,000 crore) as the global crypto market tanks, a new report by Cyber-security company CloudSEK claimed on Tuesday.

The company said it has uncovered an ongoing operation involving several phishing domains and Android-based fake crypto applications.

“This large-scale campaign entices unwary individuals into a huge gambling scam. Many of these bogus websites impersonate “CoinEgg”, a legitimate UK-based cryptocurrency trading platform,” according to the report.

CloudSEK was approached by a victim who allegedly lost Rs 50 lakh ($64,000) to such a cryptocurrency scam, in addition to other costs such as deposit amount, tax, etc.

“We estimate that threat actors have defrauded victims of up to $128 million (about Rs 1,000 crore) via such crypto scams,” said Rahul Sasi, Founder and CEO of CloudSEK.

As investors shift their focus on the cryptocurrency markets, scammers and cheats turn their attention to them as well,’ Sasi added. Threat actors first create fake domains that impersonate legitimate crypto trading platforms.

The sites are designed to replicate the official website’s dashboard and user experience. The attackers then create a female profile on social media to approach the potential victim and establish a friendship.

The profile influences the victim to invest in cryptocurrency and start trading.

“The profile also shares $100-dollar credit, as a gift to a particular crypto exchange, which in this case is a duplicate of a legitimate crypto exchange,” the report mentioned.

The victim initially makes a significant profit, which bolsters their trust in the platform and the threat actor. After the victim seemingly makes a profit, the scammer convinces them to invest a higher amount, promising better returns.

Once the victim adds their own money to the fake exchange, the threat actor freezes their account, ensuring the victim can’t withdraw their investment, and disappears with the victim’s money.

When victims take to various platforms to complain about losing access to their accounts, the same, or new, threat actors reach out to them in the guise of investigators.

“To retrieve the frozen assets, they request victims to provide confidential information such as ID cards and bank details, via email. These details are then used to perpetrate other nefarious activities,” the report warned.

In the long-term, it is imperative for the collaboration between crypto exchanges, Internet service providers (ISPs), and cyber crime cells to raise awareness and take action against threat groups,” said Sasi.

Police have arrested 13 people on charges of abetment of suicide of nine members of a family of two brothers in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, an official said on Tuesday.

The two brothers – one of them a teacher and the other a veterinarian – and seven of their other family members were found dead on Monday at two separate homes of the siblings in Mhaisal village of Sangli district, police had said.

Suicide notes were found at the homes, located 1.5 km apart in the village, over 350 km from the state capital Mumbai, they had said.

A preliminary probe suggested the two brothers had heavily borrowed money from various people, police said.

Addressing a press conference, Sangli Superintendent of Police Dikshit Gedam said, “The contents of the suicide notes indicate the family had borrowed money from some people and they were finding it difficult to repay it.” “As they were humiliated for it, they took the extreme step,” the official said.

Prima facie, it looks like they had taken the loan for some business, he said.

“We have already registered a case against 25 people from whom the family had taken money. The family was harassed and humiliated by these people, who forced them to take the extreme step,” he said.

Out of these 25 people, the police have so far arrested 13 people under Indian Penal Code Sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 341 (wrongful restraint), and relevant sections of the Maharashtra Money Lending (Regulation ) Act and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the official said.

Some of the arrested accused already have cases related to money lending against them, he said.

Police teams have been formed to trace the other accused in the case, he added.

Asked if all the family members consumed a poisonous substance together, the official said they were still conducting a probe into what and how they consumed.

“The cause of the death is still reserved and what substance was used is under investigation,” he said.

When asked if there are any superstition angle to the case, the official said so far debt is the prima facie reason behind the incident, but the case will be probed from all angles.

Maharashtra minister and senior Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and some other Shiv Sena MLAs have gone incommunicado, and are camping at a hotel in Gujarat’s Surat city, a day after the ruling Maha Vikas Agahdi (MVA) suffered a setback in the state Legislative Council polls by losing one out of the six seats it contested.

The MLAs, who are seemingly unhappy with their leadership, arrived in Surat on Monday night and are camping at the Le Meridian Hotel here, they said.

”Some Shiv Sena MLAs, including Maharashtra minister Eknath Shinde, are in Surat,” a source said.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed outside the hotel.

The opposition BJP on Monday won all five seats it contested in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections for 10 seats, while Congress candidate and Dalit leader Chandrakant Handore lost, in another setback for the MVA, comprising the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress, after the Rajya Sabha polls earlier this month.

Two candidates each of the Shiv Sena and NCP won, while the Congress managed to bag just one seat.

Ten Council seats were up for grabs and 11 candidates were in the fray for the elections, which came days after the Rajya Sabha polls, which saw the BJP handing an embarrassing defeat to the Shiv Sena-led ruling coalition.

Cross-voting in MLC polls: Uddhav Thackeray calls emergency meeting of all Shiv Sena MLAs 7

After suspected cross-voting in Maharashtra MLC elections, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has called an urgent meeting of all Shiv Sena MLAs on Tuesday.

According to sources, all MLAs have been strictly asked to remain present in the meeting. Meanwhile, Bal Thackeray loyalist Eknath Shinde will be addressing a press conference in Surat today noon.

Maha Vikas Aghadi candidate from Congress Chandrakant Handore had lost in the MLS polls.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged five seats, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiv Sena won two each while Congress was able to clinch one seat out of the total 10 seats in Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) that went to polls on Monday.

Taking to Twitter, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya said, “Maharashtra Vidhan Parishad election results – Shiv Sena (Mafia Sena) got 52 votes. 12 MLA’s revolted (55 Shiv Sena + 9 supporters = 64) Uddhav Thackeray’s Mafia Sarkar’s count down started.”

As many as eleven candidates were in the fray for the elections to the ten seats in the MLC. All the five candidates of the BJP — Pravin Darekar, Ram Shinde, Shrikant Bharatiya, Uma Khapre and Prasad Lad emerged victorious. NCP candidates– Ramraje Nimbalkar and Eknath Khadse– and the Shiv Sena nominees- Aamshya Padavi and Sachin Ahir also secured their seats. Of the two candidates fielded by Congress, Bhai Jagtap secured the win while Chandrakant Handore lost.

BJP’s winning candidate claimed that cross-voting happened among members of Shiv Sena and Congress.

“We are very happy. Maharashtra has shown faith in the BJP. Cross-voting happened among members of Shiv Sena and Congress. Otherwise, we would not have received so many votes. BJP will get more victory and received 134 votes,” said BJP leader Pravin Darekar.

He further said that independent MLAs have shown their dissatisfaction with the state government.

“We got 134 votes and this is the answer to all those who questioned what Devendra Fadnavis can do? Devendra Fadnavis is the only leader who can lead, which all the three parties could not do. Devendra has done it, the government cannot do anything and dissatisfaction has been shown against the government, independent MLAs have shown their dissatisfaction against the state government. We have proved this in the poll result,” he said.

Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam had pointed out that Handore was lost due to “internal sabotage”.

“It is really unfortunate that a Dalit candidate Chandrakant Handore who was supposed to get first preference votes of Congress MLAs lost to the second preference candidate of the Congress party. It is nothing but internal sabotage. My sympathy is with Handore,” he said in a tweet.

BJP general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh had said that his party has 106 MLAs in Assembly and it has received 133 votes.

“Maharashtra Council Polls: Shiv Sena-MLAs in Assembly: 56, Votes received: 52; NCP- MLAs in Assembly: 53, Votes received: 57; Congress- MLAs in Assembly: 44, Votes received: 41; BJP- MLAs in Assembly: 106, Votes received: 133,” he tweeted.

He further took a dig at Congress and said, “Even in defeat, Congress exhibits its true colours. Its moneybag candidate Bhai Jagtap poaches party votes to defeat a Dalit leader from party Chandrakant Handore. Old habits die hard.”

The Members of the Assembly voted in the legislative Council elections at Vidhan Bhawan in Mumbai on Monday.

The BJP has 106 MLAs, Shiv Sena 56, NCP 53 and Congress has 44 MLAs. A total of 285 members cast their votes in the MLC polls.

Former Home Ministers Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Malik, who are in judicial custody in money-laundering cases were not allowed to vote.

India suffers floods and draughts every year

Assam is flooding and there is water scarcity in Mumbai and many places in Maharashtra. These are two extreme conditions that India suffers. Assam is critical affecting a population of nearly 43 lakhs in 33 of its 35 districts. Just air-dropping of food and other relief materials is not enough; the country needs disaster management in place. Such situations occur every year. People lose their lives, wealth and health but they still live with it and government has no solution to stop this.

The death count in the ongoing flood and landslides in Assam increased to 73 on Monday. The dead included two policemen, including an officer-in-charge of a police station in the Nagaon district that had gone to help marooned people but was swept away. Their bodies were fished out in the early hours of Monday. News anchors and media are displaying the utmost painful footage to garner TRP and government officials issuing statements but no one is talking about the lack of will or government failures.

Assam is reeling under devastating floods for the past week with 127 revenue circles and 5,137 villages affected in 33 districts, according to a bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Nearly 1.90 lakh people have taken shelter in 744 relief camps. Relief materials have been distributed from 403 temporary centres to affected people who have not moved into the camps. The NDRF, SDRF, police and other agencies have evacuated about 30,000 people so far. In Kaziranga National Park (KNP) eight animals – seven hog deers and a leopard have died due to drowning and a vehicle hit. Forest officials have rescued ten others, including eight hog deers and a python.

India suffers from two extreme conditions; one is heavy and another is drought. At least 330m people are likely to be affected by acute shortages of water. As the subcontinent awaits the imminent arrival of the monsoon rains, bringing relief to those who have suffered the long, dry and exceptionally warm summer, the crisis affecting India’s water resources is high on the public agenda.

Monsoon has approached; the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took stock of the current drinking situation and concluded that water can be supplied for around 160 days or five months from the seven lakes. BMC was on the verge of announcing a water cut as the overall water level in seven lakes was just 17%. However, by July 22, the water level had crossed 50%, followed by 60% on July 24 and 70% on July 28. Every year; Mumbai gets sufficient rainfall between July and August, which provides relief from any water shortage. Previously, BMC had to announce water cuts during the low rainfall season.

Also, in August 2022, water supplies in the city’s western and eastern suburbs were affected when BMC carried out repair work on one of its seven water reservoirs, which affected areas like Kurla, Andheri, Ghatkopar, Ram Mandir and Goregaon. The BMC supplies 3,850 million litres of water daily against the city’s demand for 4,200 million litres.

Bhatsa dam in Thane, which supplies 55% of the total annual water requirement of the city, has 45% water stock, which was at 42% last year. For Upper Vaitarna, the water level is 40% as of Monday. Last year at this time, the level stood at 53%. Middle Vaitarna has 41% of water stock as opposed to 23% last year.

The civic body supplies 3,850 million litres of water daily against the city’s demand for 4,200 million litres. In order to meet the shortfall, BMC has been exploring several ways to increase the water supply. Meanwhile, in June 2021, the civic body had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an Israel-based firm for the city’s first desalination project at Manori in Malad, which is expected to be ready by 2025.

There is a need for an integrated approach, which addresses source sustainability, land use management, agricultural strategies, demand management and the distribution and pricing of water. With growing pressures because of climate change, migration and population growth, creativity and imagination, they needed governance to manage this precious resource.

India’s monsoon season lasts from June to September. It sees heavy rains, which refill the country’s water reservoirs and are vital for agriculture but cause immense destruction and loss of life. Dozens died in floods in India every year, particularly in the eastern states of Bihar and Assam, last month, with the inundation causing heavy losses to farms, homes, and infrastructure. All because of rising deforestation, poor urban planning, and increased urbanization reason behind the rise in the intensity of the floods. Unprecedented drought demands unconventional responses, and there have been some fairly unusual attempts to address this year’s shortage. The need to shift water on this scale sheds light on the key issue that makes water planning in the Indian subcontinent so challenging.

One heavy rainfall stalled Mumbai

In spite of several cases filed against the contractors, nothing has changed for Mumbai. The city has experienced its first continuous wet spell with heavy showers in a few locations on Sunday. Areas like King Circle, Chembur, Dadar, and Parel reported frequent rain activity. There was low visibility in many areas. IMD has issued an orange alert for June 20-21, indicating more rain.

IMD Colaba observatory recorded 9.5mm of rain while the IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 16.2mm of rain. While on Sunday, from 8.30am to 8.30 pm the IMD Colaba observatory recorded 48.4 mm of rain, the Santa Cruz observatory recorded scanty rainfall at 2.4 mm. The total rain recorded this season by the Colaba and Santacruz observatories has been 152mm and 115.3mm.

In its five-day forecast, the weather bureau has indicated that rain activity will continue till Thursday, June 23.

Many weather enthusiasts were upset over the IMD Sband Doppler Radar not functioning and claimed that the frequency of it being down, especially during heavy rain events, was only increasing. Some of them even took to social media raising questions on how it

will affect disaster management. Observations from the Doppler radar at Mumbai Colaba have been suspended, whereas those from the radar at Veravali have a massive lag of around one hour.

The Sband Doppler weather radar is situated atop a building in Colaba’s Navy Nagar area. S-band radar can track weather up to a 500km radius. The Doppler radar made an entry into the weather bureau after July 26, 2005, when the city received 944mm of rainfall that led to a deluge. The second radar at Veravali is meant to facilitate improvement in weather forecasting over the Mumbai region.

Bitcoin slips under $20,000, Crypto industry fears contagion

The cryptocurrency industry was on edge on Monday as bitcoin struggled to stay above a key level, with investors fearing that problems at major crypto players could unleash a wider market shakeout.

Bitcoin, the world’s biggest cryptocurrency, was trading just under the symbolic level of $20,000 in early London trading hours – roughly the peak of its charge to its previous record in 2017.

Bitcoin had dropped on Saturday to as low as $17,592.78, falling below $20,000 for the first time since December 2020.It has lost almost 60% of its value this year and 37% this month alone in the cryptocurrency sector’s latest meltdown.

Its fall follows problems at several major industry players. Further declines, market players said, could have a knock-on effect as other crypto investors are forced to sell their holdings to meet margin calls and cover losses.

Crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital is exploring options including the sale of assets and a bailout by another firm, its founders told the Wall Street Journal in a story published Friday, the same day Asia-focused crypto lender Babel Finance said it would suspend withdrawals.

U.S. based lender Celsius Network this month said it would suspend customer withdrawals. In a blog on Monday, Celsius said it would continue working with regulators and officials, but that it would pause its customer Q&A sessions.

“There is a lot of credit being withdrawn from the system and if lenders have to absorb losses from Celsius and Three Arrows, they will reduce the size of their future loan books which means that the entire amount of credit available in the crypto ecosystem is much reduced,” said Adam Farthing, chief risk office for Japan at crypto liquidity provider B2C2.

“It feels very like 2008 to me in terms of how there could be a domino effect of bankruptcies and liquidations,” Farthing said.

Smaller tokens, which usually move in tandem with bitcoin, were also hurt. No.2 token ether was at $1,0752, having dipped below its own symbolic level of $1,000 over the weekend.

The fall in crypto markets has coincided with a slide for equities, as U.S. stocks suffered their biggest weekly percentage decline in two years on fears of rising interest rates and the growing likelihood of recession.

Bitcoin’s moves have tended to follow a similar pattern to other risk assets such as tech stocks.

The overall crypto market capitalisation is roughly $877 billion, according to price site Coinmarketcap, down from a peak of $2.9 trillion in November 2021.

A fall in stablecoins – a type of crypto designed to hold a steady value – is also suggesting investors are pulling money from the sector as a whole.
