Are Hindus unsafe in India? – For seven decades, India has been held together by its constitution

hindu sadhus, sadhus, hindus, save hindus, Hinduism, Hindutva, Hindus in IndiaFrom 75 years as a free country, India has never faced a more serious catastrophe. Since 2014 the scenario has completely changed. Indian history is manipulated; Indian institutions – its courts, much of its media, its investigative agencies, and its election commission – have been pressured to fall in line with the central government’s policies. The idea of Hindutva, in its fullest idiom, will ultimately involve undoing the constitution and unravelling the fabric of liberal democracy.

The BJP’s blueprint for a country in which people are graded and assessed according to their faith, the tumult enthralling India since the passage of the citizenship act – the fever of the protests, the brutality of the police, the viciousness of the politics – has only reflected how existentially high the stakes have become. For seven decades, India has been held together by its constitution, which promises equality to all. We spoke to various think tanks to understand the plight of Hindu’s in India and what they really feel about the existence of saffron as an ideology.

Rupal mistryRupal Mistry, an animation film director said, “The RSS and the BJP’s success, over the past seven years, are owed in part to its adept poisoning of the public discourse. Politicians indoctrinate media outlets and squadrons of social media trolls lie, polarise and demonise all day long. Among their stratagems is the invention of categories of abuse for their opponents, to convey with a single label because such people should not be trusted to have India’s interests at heart. We all know Kangana is thriving on appeasement of BJP, and BJP wants such loose cannons to create unrest in India. I am Hindu and I feel very safe in my motherland, those who see threat should vote out Modi first.”

Nishant VarmaPolitical analyst Nishant Varma said, “Multiculturalism in India, even with the inclusion of Religions or Politics which Originated Far from our Land, have infused with suitable amendments. None is followed in its pure form. Left ideology was alien to India. Impressed with ‘European Left’ ways of Politics, was adopted here. Pointing in precision to Communist Policies, it’s a fact that BJP has officially learnt Maoism from CPC China, in the last 20 years. Hence, with the RSS thought process admixture with Left ideology, it’s BJP and RSS ‘Hindutva’ which threatens Existence of Age-Old ‘Hinduism’, which largely is ‘Sarva Dharma Sambhav’.”

Monojit SinghaManojit Singha, a journalist from Assam said, “Indian leaders love to talk about Mahatma Gandhi when they travel abroad. It plays well to the popular notion of India as a land of peace and love and boosts its moral authority as a responsible democracy on the world stage. Why don’t they talk about Subhash Chandra Bose, Dr Ambedkar, Tilak, Bhagat Singh or Savarkar there? So, Gandhi and his ideas came up a lot as Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped out of India recently for the first time in about one and a half years. Kangana like people does not represent India or Hindu.”

Devendra SharmaBJP worker advocate Devendra Sharma said, “Left is not in power but the left is in the mind of those who are in power. In theory and practice left is Abrahamic anti-pluralistic anti-Hindu thought. So yes, the left is a threat for Hindus. However, there is a need to define contours of engagement. Theoretically, there is no point in rejecting left aka Marxism without proper critique, engagement is essential. As there is a need to understand these conceptual frameworks from Bharatiya perspective.”

T ShrinivasT Shrinivas, a medical professional from Hyderabad said, “India will ever lean towards left ideology. But it had some influence on a small number of the population. Indian diversity and Indian Culture coupled with the conservative Indian character do not allow people to get influenced by these Imported Left Ideologies in the long run.”

Namrata ThakkarBusinesswoman Namrata Thakkar said, “If Hindus want to save Hinduism, then STOP practising female infanticide which is one of the main reasons for the Hindu community to have a lesser female population. I have seen many Hindus out of their ignorance blaming other religions for the decline of Hinduism. The fact is that many Hindus themselves are responsible for the decline of Hinduism because they shamelessly prefer male children over female children. In my opinion, Hindus should learn from Christians regarding the importance the latter gives to gender equality. If Hindus live in the majority and are undivided, there is no threat.”

Odde Siva KesavamMaterial Scientist, Odde Siva Kesavam said, “As Hindus, we are not taught to be aggressive. So far, many people tried to play with the Hindus, and the Hindu religion, and the Hindu Gods. I don’t think anyone had succeeded in the past, nor do I think they would succeed in the future.”

Rishi Banerjee, a Software Engineer writes, “Well, it would be more apt to say Hindus have been in danger since the “homecoming” of Islamic bigots in the 11th Century AD. Hindus have been in danger since the day we decided to fight amongst ourselves and started responding with this one very retarded phrase, “not every minority”. I have nothing against minorities, but it is clearly very evident how the persecution of Hindus in the hands of other people goes unnoticed.”

Abhijeet Karkare an avid reader says, “A community which existed from Afghanistan to Myanmar has now lost Afghanistan, seeing the birth of Pakistan and Bangladesh 75 years before, which are based on rabid anti-Hindu ideology. A community that was 100%, 1000 years before has now shrunk to 65% in United India (including Pakistan and Bangladesh) is fast losing its grip on Kerala, Bengal and Assam and already lost Kashmir. Muslim decadal growth rate is 1.5 times of Hindus (2011 census), couple it with conversion in form of Love Jihad and also Missionary conversion to Christianity, Hindus are rapidly losing the demographic advantage. On top of this lack of organization, Western influence, lack of spine to stand up for one’s own defence, not able to distinguish enemies from friends after 1000 yrs of persecution and not supporting nationalist organizations like RSS, VHP and others. Don’t you think Hindus are in real danger of becoming extinct?”

Vikram Gokhale is grossly misquoted by the media?

vikram gokhale, vikram, kangana ranaut, indepedence, india's independence, independence controversy, kanganaIn the last two days, Vikram Gokhale not only hit the headlines but was trending on Twitter because some media channels misquoted him stating that he endorses what Kangana Ranaut has said. The story began with a local Marathi news channel and then a news agency like ANI circulated the threads on Twitter. Within no time, his statements went viral. As we all know, these days media houses need more sensation for the TRP than views and news.

I don’t know why but I felt like knowing the accurate side of it, so I called Vikram Gokhale and spoke to him at length. He was aghast with manipulated reports. First of all, he never said independence was British alms to us, he just extended his opinion when the media asked him to comment on the current controversy of Kananga Ranaut. Point to be noted, it’s the media that initiated with their question to him about Kananga, otherwise, he might not have even spoken about it. He said, the fighters who wanted to snatch the freedom from the British were hanged and the bigwigs at that time did not attempt to save them. Many people were just mute spectators when freedom fighters were hanged (during the British raj). These mute spectators included many senior leaders. He wanted to say, independence to India should not be credited to few but at large those who laid their lives should also be valued.

His speech was more on protecting Hindus in India, at the same time he said those elements who are dividing the nation should be handled with an iron hand. He further said, all those Dalits, Sikhs and Muslims who has a love for this land are mine, but those who are trying to divide my nation are anti-nationals. People failed to understand Quran and Dalits failed to understand Dr Ambedkar because the real side was never displayed to him. Many national heroes like Lal Bahadur Shastri are made to be forgotten. He further criticized film personalities for their fanatics’. But his only emphasis was protecting India from all those playing divisive politics.

Most of you who have watched that video where Gokhale could be seen explaining his point, that was edited by the media to suit it to their advantage. There is no responsibility, no accountability and no professionalism from them. Most of the media houses are directly or indirectly associated with different political parties. Viewers can clearly understand if they observe the news, debates and talk shows (with reference to their topics) are influenced by hidden political agendas. And not to forget social media, one should not forget that it is free from any censorship or Information and Broadcasting regulations of the land. Often video proof turns out to be no proof of anything at all.

Meanwhile, several politicians reacted with outrage at Gokhale’s real freedom’ remark. Youth Congress workers protested against the same. Shiv Sean’s leaders criticized the actor for his so-called controversial remarks and translated it as a desperate attempt to get Padma Shri like Kangana. If you carefully listen to what he said, you will realize without siding anyone Gokhale specifically mentioned that every political party, including BJP, tries to derive a benefit from controversies. Replying to a query on the alleged communal violence in Tripura and its echo in Amravati and other cities in Maharashtra where incidents of stone-pelting had taken place, he said communal riots are a result of vote bank politics. Every political party plays that (vote bank politics). Speaking on the political scenario in Maharashtra, Gokhale said former allies Shiv Sena and BJP should come together again for the betterment of the country. Looking at the present scenario every Maharashtrian wish for the same. It is his personal thought. But translating it as favouring or opposing some political party is certainly not good reporting.

He just expressed that Shiv Sena and BJP should try to win the people’s confidence, and no political parties should deceive people because people can punish them. Isn’t this a common view of responsible voters and citizens of Maharashtra? politicians are responsible for the present condition of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and Air India. Thousands of employees of the MSRTC have been on a strike demanding a merger of the cash-strapped undertaking with the Maharashtra government. It was his concern for the people of Maharashtra, like any other Marathi manoos.

But all the news channels were busy making headlines. There was no depth in their reporting. The quality of news reporting was shameful, it is beyond embarrassing. They are misguiding the gullible population by sensationalism. Such exaggeration is nothing but brainwashing the general public and filling them with hatred for religion or entities. Indian media likes demonizing without showing the complete story. This is what Vikar Gokhle said, I don’t follow any ideology or politician but don’t take people for granted. The people who are creating dissection in the name of “Unity in Diversity” are dangerous for India’s unity.

But the irony is that in India TV anchors have become bigger than the news itself. They do not report news/facts, they are busy publishing propaganda. No media channel showed what he exactly said, but just picked a few lines to create controversy. The actual news or facts are lost when such TV anchors report. There are lots of areas in India where these media houses could provide credible reports like an increase in the number of deaths due to young heart attacks because of lifestyle stress, unemployment in the state, undue blabbering by ministers targeting one particular officer, corruption by the ruling alliance. I do not find any such reports although India has more than 500 media houses. It’s a big cause of concern. I think it’s high time now to make these media houses accountable for what they are reporting.

These days the media is agenda-driven. In such a trend, people like Gokhle get trapped for no reason. Misrepresentation is also called marketing. All propaganda is designed to mislead with a bit of truth in a pool of falsehoods. It is not at all called the fourth pillar of democracy nowadays because many of the media channels are running propaganda against or in favour of ruling and opposition political parties. Sometimes the channels will show you the news without approving it by the name of sources. Indians don’t use much mind what these channels are doing, they just want time to pass while eating food or getting rest on the sofa or bed. Because most of them still trust it as the fourth pillar, without realizing that it is also crumbling like the remaining pillars under the weight of dishonesty. The irony is that the common man in India has no means to independently verify the fact check of a news report. The 24×7 news media channels on TV make it more convincing to believe. Social media is an alternative but its credibility is more susceptible. You have no legal recourse, however, in the case of a misquote or “out of context” remark — although that’s damn hard to prove/demonstrate.

Babasaheb Purandare – Most loved and hated historian of Maharashtra

babasaheb purandare, babasaheb, purandare, chhatrapati shivaji maharaj, shivaji maharaj, shivshahir, shiv charitraMaharashtra lost a most beloved historian who reinvented the Shivaji era for 7 long decades.

Babasaheb Purandare was a very learned historian from our state. And had the Maharashtra government taken it seriously, he would have got Bharat Ratna by now. He deserved it too. Any person who knows a little about the politics of Maharashtra knows that criticizing Babasaheb was politically motivated. The politics were about the castes. The problem was the fact that Babasaheb, sadly for them, was a Brahmin. Then the Maratha dominant politics could not digest a Brahmin representing the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. What can you expect from frail, pathetic souls whose only reason of existence seems to be seeing castes in people’s surnames? Lastly (and understandably) that is all that they are capable of seeing and understanding. Reading his books requires a lot of effort and some amount of intellect.

The approach of the opposition was that there is more fiction than fact in Babasaheb Purandare’s rendition of the life of Shivaji, though there are enough signs which show an anti-Brahmin element (Babasaheb Purandare is a Brahmin) in the whole issue. Some political groups had claimed that Chhatrapati Shivaji and his mother Jijabai had been maligned in Purandare’s work. These groups, especially the Sambhaji Brigade, seem to have grown to consider themselves as the de facto protectors and promoters of Shivaji’s work and Maratha history. Sambhaji Brigade also blamed Babasaheb Purandare for causing confusion over Shivaji’s birth date.

It is interesting to note that the Sambhaji Brigade has always tried to downplay the role of Dadoji Konddeo (a Brahmin) in the education and grooming of Shivaji, and that of Sant Ramdas (also a Brahmin) who was hailed as Shivaji’s political guru – and both have been featured favourably in Babasaheb Purandare’s work. The removal of Dadoji Konddeo’s statue from Lal Mahal, Pune (where Shivaji grew up) sometime around 2010 by is an example of the intensity of their opposition. They are also openly and vocally anti-Brahmin in other issues and on the Internet.

Perhaps the fact that one of the most eminent historians to document and reintroduce Shivaji’s life happened to be a Brahmin might have irritated them. Leaving this mudsling aside, no one can refute his enormous work. He is a brilliant historian and has brought history into every household of Maharashtra. Political workers that had been protesting against Babasaheb Purandare also filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court, in protest when the Maharashtra government decided to award Maharashtra Bhushan to him. However, the Bombay High Court, dismissing the public interest litigation, calling it a “publicity stunt”, ruled that the petition lacked “substance” and fined the petitioners Rs 10,000 for wasting the court’s time.

Babasaheb (Balwant) Moreshwar Purandare was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award on 25 January 2019. His works are mostly based on the events related to the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the 17th-century founder of the Maratha Empire; as a result, he is termed as Shiv-Shahir (“Shivaji’s bard”). He is mostly known for his popular play on Shivaji Jaanta Raja which was popular not only in Maharashtra but also in Andhra Pradesh and Goa. Purandare has also studied the history of the Peshwas of Pune. He is also known for his significant contribution along with Madhav Deshpande and Madhav Mehere as senior party leaders in the early-1970s of Shiv Sena along with Balasaheb Thackeray. In 2015, he was awarded the Maharashtra Bhushan Award, Maharashtra’s highest civilian award.

Purandare had started writing stories related to the period of Shivaji’s reign at a very young age, which were later compiled and published in a book titled “Thinagya” (“Sparks”). His other works include books titled Raja Shiva-Chhatrapati and Kesari, and a book on the life of Narayanrao Peshwa. But the most well-known of his works is the drama, Janata Raja, a widely popular play on Shivaji published and first staged in 1985. Since then, the drama has been staged over 1000 times in 16 districts of Maharashtra, Agra, Delhi, Bhopal, and the United States. Originally written in Marathi, this work was later translated into Hindi. This drama is performed by over 200 artists, as well as elephants, camels and horses. Generally, the performance of this drama begins around Diwali each year. For his works in the field of drama, he was awarded the Kalidas Samman by the Madhya Pradesh government for the year 2007–08.

With time, people have matured and have moved away from caste-based politics, though there are still a few anti-social elements present that are almost negligible. However, Marathi Brahmins themselves must also share some of the blame for all the attacks on Purandare. Many such incidents give enough evidence to demonstrate how furtively some members of the Brahmin sub-castes were engaged in trying to prove their imagined superiority over other sub-castes. Given the politically engineered anti-Brahmin sentiment in Maharashtra, it would have been wise for the Brahmin sub-castes (i.e., Chitpavan, Saraswat, Deshastha, Karhade etc.) to support each other rather than try to score points over one another. Meanwhile, we lost one legend, he was one of his kind.

Maharashtra mourns for Babasaheb Purandare

babasaheb purandare, babasaheb, purandare, maharashtra, Maharashtra, government, balwant purandare, shivshahirBabasaheb Purandare, a celebrated author and theatre personality, was known for his work on the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He was one of the Lifetime Achievers of “Newsmakers Achievers Awards 2021, August” at Raj Bhavan Mumbai. That was his last public appearance. At his age, he was seen as quite enthusiastic and wholehearted.

Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Devendra Fadnavis said, “Famous Shivshahir, Maharashtra Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Siddhahast writer Shri Babasaheb Purandare’s demise is great pain, the moments spent in his company are coming to the fore. As many as three generations got to hear and read Shivcharitra from him; this is the destiny of our generation! Recently, on his 100th birthday, he had the opportunity to attend the ceremony in a virtual way and he is no longer with us today. I can’t believe it.”

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, in his condolence message to the Purandare family, said that the death was a great loss to the cultural world of Maharashtra. “He had a great affinity to the history of Maharashtra and its forts. He brought the history of the state alive through his writings, talks, and plays like Jaanta Raja. With his passing, an important witness in Maharashtra’s long journey has been lost. I join in grief with the family,” Pawar added.

Born on July 29, 1922, at Balwant Moreshwar Purandare in Saswad, Pune district, Purandare started writing about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from an early age, creating stories and essays about the Maratha king.

In his prolific writing career, Purandare wrote several books, including a two-volume biography of the king “Raje Shivchhatrapati”. His other prominent publications include “Maharaj”, “Shelar Khind”, “Gadkot Kille”, “Agra”, “Lal Mahal”, “Purandar”, “Rajgad”, “Panhalgad”, “Sinhagad”, “Pratapgad”, “Fulwanti”, “Purandaryanchi Daulat”, “Mujaryache Mankari”, “Savitri” and “Kalawantinicha Sajja”.

He often toured the state delivering lectures on Shivaji. In 1985, he wrote and directed the play ‘Jaanta Raja’, which involved over 200 artists, and several horses and elephants. The play was translated into several languages and was performed even outside the state in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and the US.

His wife Nirmala Purandare, an activist and educationist, had passed away in July 2019. He is survived by his two sons — Amrut and Prasad — and daughter Madhuri. In 2015, the state government had awarded the Maharashtra Bhushan award to Purandare. He was also the recipient of the country’s second-highest civilian honour — the Padma Vibhushan — in 2019.

Coming generations will get further connected to Shivaji due to Purandare’s work: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the death of noted historian Balwant Moreshwar Purandare leaves a major void in the world of history and culture, and noted that the coming generations will get further connected to Maratha king Shivaji because of him. Union minister Nitin Gadkari and NCP chief Sharad Pawar also condoled the 99-year-old historian’s demise.

According to the Maharashtra government, Purandare will be accorded a state funeral.

The historian, popularly known as Babasaheb Purandare, died at a Pune hospital on Monday after a brief illness.

The Padma Vibhushan awardee was considered an authority on Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji. His mortal remains were kept at his residence ‘Purandarewada’ here for people to pay their last respects.

Since morning, several people queued up at his residence to pay tributes to him.

Those who paid homage to Purandare here included Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol.

Prime Minister Modi in a tweet said, “I am pained beyond words. The demise of Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare leaves a major void in the world of history and culture. It is thanks to him that the coming generations will get further connected to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His other works will also be remembered.”

The PM said Purandare was witty and wise and had rich knowledge of the Indian history. “I had the honour of interacting with him very closely over the years. A few months back, had addressed his centenary year programme,” he tweeted, posting a video of his address at the event. Purandare will live on due to his extensive works, Modi said, extending condolences to his family and countless admirers.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in a video message said Purandare explained about Shivaji Maharaj and his works to contemporary students and youth and because of this, the feeling of patriotism got infused in people.

“As a youth, I was among several such people who got inspired from Purandare and we came to know about the persona of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. I will never forget him (Purandare),” he said.

Lauding Purandare’s contribution in the field of history, Gadkari said the coming generations will not forget him.

NCP chief Pawar took to Twitter to express grief over Purandare’s death.

“With the demise of Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare, Maharashtra lost its luster in the field of literature and art. A heartfelt tribute to them!” the former Union minister tweeted.

Purandare was admitted to Pune’s Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital three days ago and was being treated for pneumonia.

He breathed his last shortly after 5 am on Monday, a statement from the hospital said.

Supreme Court directs Centre to hold emergency meeting to control air pollution

supreme court, sc on air pollution, air pollution, stubble burning, punjab, haryana, construction work, delhi, national capitalThe Supreme Court on Monday directed the Centre to call an emergency meeting on Tuesday to take measures like stopping non-essential construction transport, power plants, and implementing work from home.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana, directed the concerned secretaries of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab and Delhi to attend the meeting to make their submissions before the committee formed by it.

“The affidavit filed by respondents and after hearing we come to the conclusion the major culprits of pollution are construction activity, industry, transport, power and vehicular traffic apart from stubble burning in some parts. Even though some decisions were taken by the Commission for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas Act has not indicated precisely what steps they are going to take to control factors that are causing air pollution.

“In view of that, we direct the government of India to a call for an emergency meeting tomorrow and discuss the areas which we indicated and what orders they can pass to effectively control air pollution. So far, as stubble burning is concerned, broadly affidavits state that their contribution is not so much except for two months. However, at present a good amount of stubble burning is taking place in Haryana and Punjab,” the bench also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant said.

The top court also asked the state governments of Punjab and Haryana to pursue the farmers for two weeks not to do stubble burning. “We direct the government of India, NCR states to examine introducing work from home for employees,” the bench said.

Maharashtra riots: Curfew announced amid more violence in Amravati; shops, private property destroyed

violence, amravati, amravati violence, maharashtra riots, tripura violence, nanded, malegaon, malegaon riot, maharashtra police, maha policeThe incident occurred during a bandh (shutdown) called by a saffron body against Friday’s stone-pelting incidents in Amravati city during rallies held by Muslim organisations in protest against the Tripura communal violence.

Hundreds of people, many of them holding saffron flags in their hands and raising slogans, came out on streets in Rajkamal Chowk area of this east Maharashtra city, located around 670 km from the state capital, in the morning.

A curfew has been imposed in Amravati city following further incidents of violence on Saturday morning when a huge mob of hundreds went on a rampage, destroying shops and private property, while the local police, greatly outnumbered, failed to stop them despite a lathi charge. The Maharashtra Police later dispatched four companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and another 125 police personnel to rein in the mob.

In Amravati, Nanded and Malegaon there were some people from the minority community who took out a rally without due police permission to protest against the reported violence in Tripura against members of the minority community. Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil had on Friday promised stern action against those indulging in violence and the state BJP had called for a bandh in Amravati till 4 pm Saturday to mark their protest against the violence.

Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis said the rallies in Maharashtra to protest against the Tripura incident seem to be a well-orchestrated plot to provoke communal clashes, adding that it is unfortunate and does not augur well for the state. “It is my ardent appeal to people from both the communities to maintain peace. Nobody should indulge in any violence,” he said.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said, “The Raza Academy is not strong enough to arrange such violence and manpower has been provided to them for it. We will arrest and unmask them; the real mobsters are different. They (Opposition) are the biggest enemies of Maharashtra. People are watching and they know who is behind the violence.”

Devendra Fadnavis urged the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to initiate measures to restore communal harmony. He also demanded stern action against the ruling parties’ elected members and warned people who shared the dais with those protesting and making provocative speeches.

Authorities in Maharashtra’s Amravati city imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure after stone-pelting incidents during protests against the recent communal violence in Tripura. the district’s guardian minister Yashomati Thakur told the media.

Under the provision, district authorities imposed a curfew in the city for four days. People will not be allowed to come out of their homes unless there is a medical emergency and gatherings of more than five persons have been banned. Internet services will also remain suspended in the city for three days to stop the spread of rumours, the police said.

Withdraw Kangana Ranaut’s Padma Shri: DCW chief Maliwal writes to Prez

kangana ranaut, padma shri, ramnath kovind, president, dcw, delhi commission for women, swati maliwal, maliwalDelhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday urging him to withdraw the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, bestowed on actor Kangana Ranaut for her remarks allegedly belittling the country’s Independence.

Ranaut on Thursday had kicked off a row by saying India attained “real freedom” in 2014, apparently referring to the Narendra Modi-led government assuming power, and describing the country’s Independence in 1947 as “bheek” (alms).

Maliwal, in her letter, said the actor had ”made certain outrageous statements disgracing the great freedom fighters of the country”.

The DCW chief also demanded sedition charges against the ‘Queen’ actor. “These statements reflect her hatred for our great freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, and countless others who laid down their lives for the nation! We all know that our nation got its Independence from British rule through ultimate sacrifices and martyrdom of our great freedom fighters,” she wrote.

Highlighting that Ranaut’s statements have hurt the sentiments of millions of Indians and are “seditious” in nature, she urged the president to “kindly take cognizance of the matter and withdraw the Padma Shri honour bestowed upon Ms Ranaut”.

“I also request you to kindly ensure that an FIR is registered against her on charges of sedition. I hope that you will uphold the sentiments of crores of Indians and do the needful in the matter,” Maliwal stressed.

The DCW chief said Ranaut, “through her insensitive and thoughtless lies”, had demeaned and belittled ”the sacrifices of millions of Indians who participated” in various movements such as the revolt of 1857, the Champaran Satyagrah, the Khilafat Movement, the Quit India Movement, the Dandi March and the Non-Cooperation Movement among several others.

“How can we forget the thousands who had assembled at the Jallianwala Bagh to protest against British rule and the massacre that followed? Are these chapters in our history a ‘bheek’?” Maliwal sought to know.

She also pointed out that it was not a stray incident by the actor and that “Ranaut appears to not be of sound mind”.

“She habitually spews venom against people of her own country and has repeatedly used vile language to attack those she does not agree with. Her behaviour is in no way befitting of the recipient of the highest award in the country and is also an insult to the stalwarts who received the award with and before her,” Maliwal added.

Ranaut was recently awarded the Padma Shri.

Not necessary whatever I do will be great, says Pankaj Tripathi

pankaj tripathi, bunty aur bubli 2, pankaj, actor pankajActor Pankaj Tripathi is arguably in the best phase of his career: he is not only swamped with work but continues to garner applause for his every outing, regardless of the format.

But the actor, a scene-stealer in any film or web series he does, is a little concerned about “disappointing” his fans if his work is not up to the mark, someday.

“I remember 10 days ago I met a group of people at the airport who were from the South and Bengal and they said when they see a shot of mine in a trailer, they feel they want to see the film as I will do something for sure. “There is a sense of responsibility too (and also) that the day I mess up a little, people might be disappointed. I am also a human being. I do feel a little worried sometimes. It is not necessary that whatever I do will be great. It might be average but then people say that my average will be fine too,” Tripathi told PTI in an interview.

The 45-year-old actor said he tries to concentrate on doing his job and believes in giving his 100 per cent to every role. “I try to maintain a balance of entertainment and sensitivity; I make sure the purpose is not missed.” After years of struggle, Tripathi has been working round-the-clock and said he wishes to slow down a bit after honouring his prior commitments.

”This has not happened overnight; it has taken a lot of time to be here. I am 45-years-old today and at this age, the success won’t get to my head because you know and understand life. So, my perspective is a little different.

“I feel I need to slow down now and I will, after finishing my prior commitments. I have pre-COVID-19 commitments which will take six months or so. I will after that (slow down) a little bit because I need (to look at) physical health,” he added.

With fewer breaks in between Tripathi visits his family in Bihar’s Gopalganj district less often now. But the actor, a graduate from the National School of Drama (NSD), shared that during his time at home around 600 people queue up to take selfies and he happily obliges them.

“They all love me and come this far to my house to see me and I don’t want to upset them. Although, I do get a bit tired, smiling all the time but I don’t get irritated soon,” he said.

Back in Mumbai at his sea-facing apartment in Madh Island, Tripathi prefers to stay away from the limelight and finds peace in being close to nature.

“When I am at home, the phone is off. Today, I am not worried about missing a phone call, earlier I was. For three years or so the phone is on silent mode as I have prior commitments so I want to finish that first. “Besides, I also read books of contemporary Hindi writers like Satya Vyas, Nilotpal Mrinal and others and some who write on nature, environment and farming. I also read political columns in the newspaper,” he said.

Currently, he is busy promoting his next film “Bunty Aur Babli 2”, backed by Yash Raj Films. The film is a sequel to the 2005 Shaad Ali-directed blockbuster, which featured Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan as the titular characters.

While Mukerji is returning as the original Babli, the sequel stars Saif Ali Khan who steps in for Bachchan’s Bunty, with Siddhant Chaturvedi and debutante Sharvari who are the new age con-couple, also called Bunty and Babli, respectively.

Recalling watching “Bunty Aur Babli” in a Patna theatre upon its release 16 years ago, Tripathi said he thoroughly enjoyed the original, which he said had a beautiful storyline and music.

In “Bunty Aur Babli 2”, the actor will be seen as Jatayu Singh, a shrewd cop, who pits the two pairs of con artists Bunty and Babli against each other.

“In the film, the new Bunty Aur Babli are tech-savvy. The old con couple had an old-world set-up. In this new digital age, to earn quick money some people, unfortunately, get trapped. It is the right time to come up with a film like this,” he said.

Like any other common man, Tripathi said he too was conned years ago over car insurance after a man, who claimed to be an agent took money from him. It was a few months later that the actor learnt it was a fraud, he added.

“When I contacted the company to check on the policy, they denied having it. After this, I made sure to make only a cheque payment. It was a small amount of Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 but the incident made me aware,” he said.

The movie, directed by Varun V Sharma, is set to be released in theatres worldwide on November 19. Tripathi will next be seen in Kabir Khan’s much-anticipated cricket drama “83”. He is also working in films like “Bachchan Pandey”, “Oh My God! 2” and will reprise his role as lawyer Madhav Mishra in the Hotstar web series “Criminal Justice”.
