After decades of trials, Delhi court on Monday held Ariz Khan responsible for killing inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, along with his co-conspirator, in the Batla House encounter which took place in 2008 at Delhi. Ariz Khan was arrested by Delhi Special Cell in February 2018 after being on the run for 10 years.
He has been convicted under sections 302, 307, 333, and 353 (which deal with assault or grievous hurt to a public servant in the discharge of his duty), 186 (which has provisions of punishment for people who prevent a public servant from discharging their duties), 34 and 174A of the Indian penal Code (IPC) as well as Section 27 of the Arms Act (which provides for a jail sentence to those who are found in possession of arms illegally).
The encounter took place only after a seven-member Delhi Police team led by Mohan Chand Sharma Inspector in the Special Cell of Delhi police, stumbled upon IM commander Atif Amin and his companions in their rented address at L-18, Batla House on 19 September 2008 morning. The team had received unambiguous information that a suspected person wanted in connection with the serial bomb blasts in Delhi was hiding in a flat in the Batla House area of Jamia Nagar.
Upon reaching the four-storied house the police’s attempt to storm the flat on the second floor at around 10:30 AM (IST) led to a heavy exchange of fire. Sharma received the first explosion of fire from the terrorists holed up inside. In this incident, Sharma lost his life while two other police officers were injured.
In 2013, Shazad Ahmed, who, too, had escaped the Batla House shootout with Khan, was convicted and sentenced. Two of their accomplices, Atif Amin and Mohammed Saif were killed in the incident, while one managed to escape.
Year after year, March 8 is celebrated as International Women’s Day is celebrated across the world celebrating the achievements of women in social, economic, cultural, and other fields. Despite facing N number of challenges either by society or by the family, women have proved their mettle in every sphere. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we asked women from different fields and walks of life on ‘What Women’s Day means to them?’ Here is what they have to say.
Dr. Shradha Maheshwari, a neurosurgeon from Mumbai said, “Women often undermine their contributions whether it is at home, at work or any other platform. Women’s day is a reminder to women themselves first and then to others that these contributions matter. Let’s acknowledge the fact that every role is significant and get ourselves inspired by women around us who strive in every field to make things better for us.”
“International Women’s Day to me is a day to reflect the many positive changes that have taken place to create equality across. A day where we discuss improvements in women’s lives and continue to make changes being part of the process. Definitely, a day to celebrate the many milestones of those who have achieved in tough and challenging situations. I can proudly say – where there is a woman, there is magic, said Shweta Shah, Founder, and Enabler of The Pahadi Story.
Actress Prachee Shah Paandya said, “For me, Women’s Day is any day that women are celebrated because women deserve an equal future, especially in India, free from stigma, stereotypes, and violence. The day we achieve gender equality, every day will be women’s day.”
“Being a woman means being free to be whoever you want to be with thoughtfulness, grace, and compassion. I love both the innate strength and sensitivity we have as women. A woman can not only succeed in anything she sets her mind to, but also accomplish that while juggling multiple roles. I hope one day I can inspire others to follow their dreams and pursue whatever it is they want to do,” said Ashleysha Yesugade, an entrepreneur and Fashion Model – AAY India.
International dancer Grace Rhodes told us, “There is no limit to how much we can continue to support women and celebrate what we as women are and what we can accomplish. Even in this current time, there is even more reason to celebrate women’s achievements. The colors of international women’s day remind us that purple signifies justice and dignity green symbolises hope. This year’s theme is chosen to challenge with the idea that a challenged world is an alert world.”
“I want to send a message to all and especially to the young women to say; stay focused, work hard and be what you want to. I know it’s easier said than done but try not to let this day and age and social media deter you away from who you are as a person. We are all equally amazing individuals”, added Grace.
“Every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We are strongest when we cheer each other. So, on women’s day I make sure to give a big round of applause to all the women’s in my life who set’s a great example of their success story to me and inspire me to lead my life towards great success,” said Grishma Salgaonkar, CS Executive at BookMyShow.
Nishita Chakroborty, an Archaeology Student and a Dance Teacher by Profession said, “To me, International Women’s Day means acknowledging the women throughout history that have paved the way so women like me can achieve their dreams. These women include my Nani, my mother, my sister, my girlfriends, and all of the other important women that surround my life. I am lucky enough to be surrounded by nurturing, caring, and inspiring women. It’s a day of solidarity for us all to celebrate the social, political, cultural, and economic achievements of women. For me, this day especially acts as an opportunity to reflect and admire my mother. Her constant strength and resilience have helped shape me into the woman I am today.”
Nishita further continued, “On this day, I pay tribute to the women in my life that mean everything to me. Happy International Women’s Day to all!”
Arya Kaimal, client head at Global Image Factory told us, “Growing up with a single mother and an older sister has made me realise that women can do miracles and can fight over any obstacles. They will love you in so many ways that you’ll never find yourself alone or lost. I celebrate women’s day as a token of love for the mother who worked day and night to take care of her children and for my adorable sister for being an amazing mother at a very young age. For me, it’s a day to cherish them and all the lovely ladies to come across for their achievements, strength, and courage. I’ve heard their stories and helplessness yet they smile and bloom so beautifully. Every human being deserves a day to appreciate the little things they have sacrificed for their loved ones and today is the day for all the women out there. You are doing so well! You rock!”
“For me, Women’s day means Strength, Individuality, Love, and Compassion. And I think we should celebrate each day as a women’s day. Cheers to all the ladies who always inspire and motivate me to achieve my future goals. Happy women’s day to all,” said actress Rupali Suri.
Actress Malvi Malhotra said, “I feel women are more sensitive and great creation by God who is wise and who knows to love and make sacrifices. A woman is one who encourages and never gives up. A woman is a goddess in herself because she gives life. A woman is always ahead of what she may or where there is a woman there is magic. More power to all the women in this world. Happy women’s day.”
Radhika Nihalani, Founder and CEO of Think Ink Communications and Think Talkies said, “I really believe there shouldn’t be a reason to have a specific day for women. We must celebrate women and men as well, every day. However, what’s amazing to me about this day is the sisterhood that one gets to witness in and around this day. What all women must do, regardless of the day is support each other, back each other and pull each other up. The empathy that women bring to any relationship is the most beautiful and they need to exercise it the most with other women. I am a strong believer when people support people amazing things happen.”
Aarya Vora, a Travel Vlogger said, “Women’s day is a strong reminder for all the women that you are strong and a symbol of power. Because I have seen a couple of women who thinks that they are women and they have to take permission from their family or to husband to do anything. But I would like to remind them you are an independent person, don’t make yourself dependent. Live your dream the way you want, stay strong and you can do anything. Happy women’s day to all the lovely ladies.”
Singer Savaniee Ravindra said, “According to me every day is women’s day. We should always celebrate love, friendship every day, rather than celebrating it on a particular day. And people should celebrate it every day, every moment as the woman is a reason for this world’s existence. I am really proud to be a woman and I cherish my womanhood every day. Happy women’s day to all the beautiful ladies out there. Keep shining and keep smiling.”
Fitness Enthusiast and Social Media Influencer Ruhi Singh said, “I feel women’s day is a day of celebration of women hood, to and how powerful they are and how they need to celebrate every single day as women’s day. This special day represents us, our superpower, and our capabilities to take care of everything with ease. We should always encourage women as they are the backbone of the nation.”
“It is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the many positive changes that have happened to create equality. It’s a day where we reflect on improvements made for women’s rights and an opportunity to discuss further improvements to gain more equality in society. International Women’s day is about celebrating the power of women. I truly believe that when women support each other incredible things happen”, said actress Meera Chopra.
Simran Choudhary, a singer from Chandigarh said, “I think every day is a women’s day because, without them, you cannot exercise anything. Be it your dependence on a woman for food, an ear to hear your day, a hand to console and support, or a lap to comfy. And all these efforts need recognition and have to be thanked, which certainly shouldn’t be limited to a day but having a day specifically makes it credible and you get to realise how important a woman is to you.”
Actress Sunayana Fozdar said, “I don’t think we should celebrate women’s day only one day. Women should be celebrated respected, loved every day. Women play several roles in life and I think it’s time that we should start loving our self. More power and love for every woman out there. Happy women’s day!”
An average man with an extraordinary journey, he has his weaknesses and strengths. He makes controversies; he is always vocal when it comes to his government and state affairs. You might like him, hate him, criticize him, but you cannot ignore him because he has his sturdy presence in Maharashtra. If you ask any outsider to name the top ten known names of Maharashtra politics, I am sure one of them would be Sanjay Raut.
Opposition gets rattled with his writing; he hits where it hurts the most. This always gets translated as Sanjay Raut is a cunning person or a spoiler; the perception is created by some of his opponents and their supporting media houses. Or in other words, when it comes to Shiv Sena and their opponents, it’s always Samna Vs the entire mainstream media.
He is not only a strategist but a lifebuoy for his party and people. Raut has a better understanding of the Thackeray family and Shiv Sena. He is very loyal to his party’s leadership but yet has his own voice. He is considered to be very close to the core decision-making process of his party. He is also hated by most of his party men because of his largest presence above all of them.
His firebrand and provocative statements will remind you of Balasaheb’s peculiar style of humour. With time he has softened his aggression towards religious politics, again which does not decipher that he has compromised his approach towards Hindutva. He is currently a member of the Upper house of Rajya Sabha and not directly elected by the general public. Raut has never taken any position in Government or cabinet but gave his hundred percent towards the decision-making. He is too artful, and always be pungent in his advice.
There were rumours that Sanjay Raut was the reason for withdrawing the support to BJP. Some say it’s he who has diminished the arrogance of BJP and kept them in their size. He is one of those brains behind the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance that has managed to deprive the BJP from power.
Raut is an uncompromising journalist and Executive editor of the Marathi newspaper – Saamna, which is Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece. He has been an active Shiv Sainik since Balasaheb Thackeray’s time. Raut worked very hard to reach here.
Balasaheb always trusted in his ability to write and express. He has not only guarded the stand of his party but always worked in its interest. He is the one who is always at the receiving end for all odds and evens. Post Balasaheb era, he stood with Uddhav Thackeray in every decision making.
Journalism and politics, this lethal combination is an epic of his personality. There was an era when all the prime-time debates and headlines were attributed to Samna edits. His writing speaks volumes, he is mischievously humorous and strong-willed, maybe this is the reason he has earned more trolls than the fans.
He is a music lover, plays harmonium, and enjoys Cinema and movie making. He has his utmost gentle side as a family man. His wife came under the scanner of Enforcement Directorial (ED) but so far no involvement of his is proven. His biggest strength is his simple individual background.
Once upon a time, Shiv Sena was known for violence, the party was known for threatening people. Gradually it’s the Samna edits and conduct of their leaders that has cleared the air on this set discernment. Shiv Sainiks extended a hand in cooperation, they earned the confidence of the people, they never displayed their power over the common public rather they serve them, CM Uddhav Thackeray is a perfect example of humility, which gathers loyalists on the basis of exclusive rights of Maharashtrians to live and work in Maharashtra also believing in the inclusive, cosmopolitan nature of Mumbai. Shiv Sena has today become the beloved of Maharashtra, as it breaks away from its old ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party. Businessmen to back-office employees, all are breathing. To my surprise, Uddhav (whom I never imagined in active politics) proved himself the best CM of Maharashtra by keeping up his demure against all unwanted attacks.
Unfortunately, whatever Sanjay Raut has spoken in the recent past was twisted by mainstream and social media to their advantage, some for political gains and others for TRP. Today, most of the Indian Media houses are sold out. They are busy creating perception and changing the narrative. Post Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case, Sanjay Raut was a one-man army of Sena to render befitted replies to opponents and Supari journalists. I am not saying, Raut was always right, but I am sure he was not always wrong either.
His day begins with his hard-hitting and annoying editorials (for opponents). Soon after he gets surrounded by the journalists, thereafter the entire day he rules news spaces as if there is no other topic in our country. Or you will suddenly realize that he has tweeted something that shook social media and all the army of IT cells are irked. He never sits calm and does not allow his opponents to sit idle. He makes sure he has empowered everyone including media, social media, and their opponents. He just sparks the debate and gets back to his work making sure that they talk about him for the rest of the day. He brilliantly engages people and the news space. These days, Sanjay Raut is all over the place and is persistent too.
This is my personal observation; being Maharashtrian, having lived in Girgaon Mumbai for most of my life, grew up seeing Shiv Sean and its leader at different times.
Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh handed over Hiren Mansukh’s death probe from Mumbai Crime Branch to the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). In between, BJP requested the Centre to have the National Investigation Agency (NIA) take over the inquiry, mentioning a possible terror angle. Opposition leader Narayan Rane has also demanded President’s Rule in the state given the reason of poor law and order.
In the meantime, BJP leader Ashish Shelar criticized and questioned the Shiv Sena-led government about the encounter specialist’s presence at the post-mortem of Mansukh. He also claimed that the ATS officer which is probing the case is neither a part of Thane police nor the ATS.
Answering the constant outbreaks of opposition Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said bringing out the truth in the mysterious death of Mansukh, whose Scorpio vehicle was used to keep explosives near Ambani’s residence, is important for the “image” and “prestige” of the Maharashtra government. He also said the opposition should keep patience and let the investigation come out with the realities but It is wrong to politicize his death and put the government in the wharf.
On the other hand, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Sandeep Deshpande demanded that a sitting judge should be appointed to carry out the investigation.
A police official from Thane told the media that Mansukh had left his shop around 8.30 pm on Thursday in an autorickshaw and since then his phone was switched off. His family members had lodged a missing person’s report on Friday morning after he did not return home and a case was registered at Naupada police station.
By that time, a body was found at Mumbra and it was later confirmed that the deceased was Mansukh. The post-mortem was done at a civic-run hospital in Thane’s Kalwa on Saturday and his mobile phone is yet to be recovered, informed an official.
Mansukh was born in 1977 in Thane and was working in an automobile and spare parts company. An unknown car found near Ambani House Antila revealed that the car belonged to him and he also admitted to the police that the car belonged to him. But the reason behind his death is still unknown.
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) named 33 people, including actress Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik, in a chargesheet filed before a special court in Mumbai in a case related to the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput last year. The document of nearly 12,000 pages has statements recorded of more than 200 witnesses.
Advocate Satish Maneshinde said, “The 12000-page charge was expected. All efforts of NCB have been directed towards Rhea Chakraborty to somehow rope her in. The entire amount of “Narcotic Substances recovered against 33 Accused are nothing compared to what even a Constable in Mumbai Police or Narcotics Cell or the Airport Customs or other agencies recover from one raid or trap. The entire NCB from top to bottom was engaged in unearthing drug angles in Bollywood… There’s hardly any material against any known faces who were paraded during the investigations, I wonder why? Either the allegations were false or Only God Knows the Truth.”
The charge sheet is a damp squib standing on the foundation of Inadmissible Evidence and Statements recorded under section 67 of the NDPS Act even after the Supreme Court Judgement in Toofan Singh Judgement… Without Rhea Chakraborty being Charged this case has no substance… The HC has found no prima facie material at the stage of Bail of alleged “Financing” Drugs Trade,” he added.
Suvendu Adhikari, a member of the 15th Lok Sabha and the 16th Lok Sabha (2014-2016), as an All-India Trinamool Congress candidate, from Tamluk. Famous for his contribution towards the people of Nandigram under the umbrella of the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee, when reports of land acquisition for a chemical hub had triggered a movement. Suvendu defeated CPI(M)’s strongman Lakshman Seth by a margin of 1,72,958 votes.
He resigned from the primary membership of the All India Trinamool Congress and joined Bharatiya Janata Party on 19th December 2020. May contest against Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram. Mamata Didi is likely to file her nomination for the seat on March 11. Nandigram goes to poll in the second phase on April 1.
Dipanjan Ghosh, an IT professional from West Bengal said, “The slogan ‘daughter of Bengal’ has really moved people. Suvendu Adhikari was liked by people the most when he was in TMC, since he has joined BJP, he is going to lose elections. People fear communal violence here.”
Whereas BJP’s West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh said, “My party is going to win by all means; people of West Bengal are tired of Mamta’s inefficient government. He further stated that the BJP will sweep Bengal polls by 200 of the total 294 Assembly seats. He further continued, “We are ready for the contest in the West Bengal Assembly elections.”
Elections to 294-member West Bengal Assembly will begin on March 27. The eight-phase polling will conclude on April 29, results on May 2. Bengal is likely to see a triangular contest with TMC, Congress-Left alliance, and BJP in the fray.
Right now, the state of affairs in West Bengal is the most complicated. The CPI(M) and the Left Front have been rigorously working to recover lost ground. BJP also is in full form; they left no stone unturned. Hundreds of men and RSS cadres are already at the groundwork. IT cells are geared up with their agendas. The 2019 Lok Sabha election saw a polarisation between the TMC and BJP and the latter won 18 of the 42 seats polling 40.6 percent (of votes). The Left Front got squeezed out in this polarisation and got only 7.4 percent of the votes.
Surprisingly just like Maharashtra, there can be another combination that can decide the fortune of West Bengal, Left Front, Congress, and other non-BJP, non-TMC forces that can get together to strip the BJP of additional support. In this entire exercise of keeping BJP out of the game, Mamata Banerjee has a strong chance of coming to power again.
I recently met my West Bengal friends, they told me Bengal and Didi are made for each other. BJP has gained a lot of popularity in the recent past but their politics is communal, they may take some good vote shares but defeating Didi is not so easy. TMC also has strong roots here. There would be tough competition between them. In the 2016 Assembly Election BJP made inroads in WB with 3 seats with a vote share of 10.16% (comparatively increase of 5.56% as compared to the 2011 election).
In the 2014 General Election BJP managed to get 2 seats with a vote share of 17.05% (an increase of 10.88%). In the 2019 General Election BJP really played well in WB earning 18 seats with a vote share of 40.25% (An increase of 22.25% as compared to the 2014 election). TMC was able to secure 43.28%. Looking at these numbers we can say BJP has earned good numbers here. But is that enough for winning?
BJP’s core agenda still is Hindutva, Ram Mandir, Jai Shree Ram chanting but none of their leaders spoke about development. Modi also criticised Mamata and made a very embarrassing statement but made no mention of development or infrastructure. Meanwhile, CAA and NRC to identify the illegal immigrants and send them back to the country of origin was another major agenda that has not gone well with the West Bengal population.
After the formation of the federal government for the second time, West Bengal has become the main target of the Modi-Shah alliance after establishing control over all the important states of India either individually or by forming alliances. Unfortunately, they lost it in Maharashtra but now they don’t want to lose Bengal.
Bengal elections may go the Delhi way. Although BJP increased its vote share from 32 to 40% in the assembly election from 2015 but decreased by 14% from Lok Sabha 2019. BJP had no candidate against the popularity of Kejriwal. Similarly, BJP doesn’t have a strong candidate against Mamata in West Bengal. BJP may increase its vote share & seats in assembly elections but is unlikely to defeat Mamata.
West Bengal is not only the second-largest state in India in terms of population but also at the junction of North-East India with the mainland of India. It shares borders with Bangladesh and Bhutan. Not far away from China, Myanmar and Nepal. As a state, after Kashmir, Assam and West Bengal are the most populous Muslim regions in terms of population.
In 2019, the BJP-led central government passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) in the Indian Parliament, promising to grant citizenship to Hindu immigrants from Bangladesh and providing them with housing. West Bengal has about 28 per cent of Muslim voters. The BJP wants to implement its NRC plan at four levels. Minority voters don’t want to buy these promises from BJP.
Many want TMC to win because they believe BJP will compromise the peace of the state with riots and communal clashes. 18 MPs of BJP were elected in 2019. But they have not done anything for the people of Bengal. Only religion should not be an issue. TMC has done many reforms and development works.
As per the micro-level scenario, BJP may win in the Northern part of West Bengal and rural districts, including Burdwan, Dinajpur (North and South), and Murshidabad. People from these areas are actually fed up with this current government, and they see BJP as the best alternative (despite knowing the fact that BJP lacks a proper CM face in the state). They want proper coordination between the Central and the State government, which is currently lacking due to the egoistic nature of Mamata Banerjee.
Even though the State government employees have total control of the Election Machinery on a voting day, it is very difficult for a rival Political party to perform to its expectations on Election Day in the State of West Bengal.
The current hottest diva Bidita Bag who has done a considerable amount of work on the OTT platform is all excited for her upcoming movie ‘Fauji Calling’, which also stars a bunch of talented actors like Sharman Joshi, Mugdha Godse, and Ranjha Vikram Singh.
She had started her filmy career with the Bengali movie ‘Ichhe’ in 2011 and later worked on several movies like ‘Kagojer Nouka’, ‘Sangabora’ and ‘Bouma’. The model-cum-actress also seen in ‘The Missing Stone’, ‘Abhay 2’, ‘The Sholay Girl’, and many others.
Bidita got candid with our correspondent Hema Singh where she shares about her upcoming projects, characters, favorite directors, take away from Fauji Calling, and more…
Can you describe your role in this movie?
Fauji Calling is a film that gives tribute to the sacrifices of the families of our soldiers. I am playing the wife of a soldier who is at the LOC. We have seen a lot of war films that have given us a glimpse of a soldier’s life, his struggles, and sacrifices, but we have hardly spoken about what a soldier’s family goes through.
If we analyze the journey of a soldier, the families are equally are a part of it and they go through several ups and downs along with the soldier. Through ‘Fauji Calling’ the makers want to show the family life of a soldier and hence the wife becomes a focal point in that sense.
We saw in the trailer that the role is given to you was quite intense, so what you want to say about that?
I am thankful to my director Aaryan Saxena and producer Ovez Sheikh Ji that they gave me an opportunity to play this role. In the movie, directly or indirectly I am representing every soldier’s wife (smile). Though it was a challenging experience for me as an actor I enjoyed every bit of it. Aaryan sir has guided me at every step, so overall it was a delightful experience.
Does the growing competition in the industry make you feel nervous?
I used to get nervous initially as they say it’s a cut-throat industry. But with every passing day, I am becoming more secured and less judgmental about people and myself as well. It’s my karmic journey. I am just trying to be the best version of myself and this is why now I don’t get nervous at all.
If you could live the life of one actor for a day, whose life would it be and why?
I take inspiration from Akshay Kumar. According to me, he is the fittest and finest actor in Bollywood. And if we see his acting graph then he has done a variety of films in his career. So, I really want to live his life for one day (laughs).
Which Bollywood director, would you like to work with next?
Any good passionate director who wants to work with me… (laughs). Jokes aside, there are many, Shoojit Sircar, Anurag Basu, Anurag Kashyap, Sujoy Ghosh, Prakash Jha, Vikramaditya Motwani, and the list goes on.
Bidita, what’s your takeaway from this film?
Fauji Calling is a film of today relevant yet layered… it’s about relations, about extremely strong emotional attachment between mother and child, the love between a husband and wife, emotional companionship and respect between a mother and daughter-in-law, and the gratitude and friendship that two hurt souls seek in each other.
Set against a backdrop of an army family with their trials and tribulations. This is a movie that shows love, affection, support and I guess all these are my take away from the film.
What genres do you want to work on?
I have mostly done very serious kinds of roles that are quite challenging. It’s a dream of every actor to work on different kinds of roles because versatility is the thing that keeps an artist moving forward especially where people are ready to slot you in a particular kind of role. I would like to do few comedy films. I believe my sense of humor is quite good.
Lastly, what are your future projects?
Currently, I am promoting my upcoming film Fauji Calling. By end of March, I will start shooting for Bhaukaal 2 which is the MX Player series. Along with that, I am also shooting for few other interesting projects which I can’t reveal now.
The current Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) government has done quite a decent job in handling the COVID-19 crisis but people expected something more than what the government delivered. Meanwhile, DMK has taken every advantage of politicizing this crisis. Also, the two major parties bickering with themselves in front of the public give neither a big edge.
Still, Chennai and suburban areas of the city are measured as the stronghold of DMK. Party is also considerably sturdy in northern Tamil Nadu and in the Cauvery Delta belt. DMK is traditionally weak in the western belt and southern belt. After the AMMK split from ADMK, the party has considerably gained in the South, but it is still weak in western Tamil Nadu but that will not make much difference to the party.
Ousted former AIADMK chief VK Sasikala’s sudden announcement that she will “step aside from politics and public life” gives benefit to All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and a setback to her nephew and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) leader TTV Dhinakaran.
By any remote chance, if the AIADMK-NDA wins, Sasikala’s self-imposed political isolation may extend longer and she would need to wait for an appropriate time to strike. Currently, there are two major parties grouped along with some minor parties that are having chances to win in the 2021 election.
2021 is a tough election and it is going to be difficult for ADMK because TTV Dhinakaran formed a new party called Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) which contested in the 2019 election and this party gained a 5 percent share of votes. This 5 percent of the votes are traditional ADMK voters.
Naveen Kumar a Bank employee from Tamil Nadu said, “It is very early to decide which part will win because a lot of things are happening around the political scenario in the state. But still, the DMK landslide is for sure if the current political scenario persists and the current party alliances continue till the election.”
AIADMK has lost a considerable vote share after the demise of Jayalalithaa who had a mass appeal among the public.
Ahmad Thaha, a Tannery owner told Afternoon Voice, “People prefer DMK to restore the pride of Tamils and to drive out Hindi imposition. Get our freedom to speak, and to destroy pseudo nationalism. We don’t want to communal hate in our state.”
J Sudkhakaran, a hotelier said, “We common people of Tamil Nadu very well know the fact that both ADMK and DMK are second to none when it comes to corruption. But as a commoner one main difference to note is that ADMK from the very start has been very careful in not ripping apart/ stealing from Poor and Middle-Class people. But they have a lot of internal issues, somewhere voters lost faith.”
The party’s vote share in the 2019 Indian general election was merely 19 percent. The same party secured 44 percent in the 2014 Indian general election when Jayalalithaa was the leader. Sasikala has now clearly taken a decent stand, not just staying away from politics but pleading for the AIADMK to retain power in the April 6 election.
Sathish Kumar, working for an IT firm as Team Head said, “Rasing sun (DMK) will burn the lotus (BJP) and give hope to all Tamilians.”
A Dental surgeon from Tamil Nadu Bijvin Raj said, “DMK has done a lot for the economical as well as the socio-cultural development of the state and our people.”
S Vaithiyanathan, works as a Language Lead for Tamil at an IT firm said, “I support DMK to prosper to keep Tamil Nadu away from communalist.”
DMK is expected to win the 2021 elections on the alliance arithmetic and the possibility of alliance formation. However, still there are months of time for the election and anything can happen in the due course.

Tamil Nadu geared up for the sixteenth legislative assembly election that is being held on 6 April 2021 to elect members from 234 constituencies. The voters are split into two parts; some are strong with Congress as Rahul Gandhi succeeded in winning the confidence of the people. Moreover, with the entry of BJP, they are scared of communal politics and losing their Tamil Pride inviting Hindi imposers in the state.
Amma’s dream is right now the biggest priority for the AIADMK cadre but unfortunately, they are divided within. Party can continue to rule even after Jayalalithaa is a big question. Making an effort to keep everyone in the loop, Sasikala the close aide of Jayalalithaa urged her party workers “All true followers of Jayalalithaa need to act with wisdom to ensure the DMK, that ‘Amma’ identified as our common enemy, is kept out of power,”. The party has lost a considerable vote share after the demise of Ms. J Jayalalithaa who had a mass appeal among the public.
On the other hand voters of Tamil Nadu suspect that the AIADMK may align with BJP to come to power so their Tamil language pride is diverting them towards DMK. Meanwhile, TTV Dhinakaran formed a new party called Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) which contested in the 2019 election, and this party pulled out around 5% seat share. This 5% of the votes are traditional ADMK votes and these votes were mostly from ADMK supporters who want Sasikala/Dhinakaran to take up ADMK leadership.
AMMK has been opposing ADMK leadership since the time of its formation. So if AMMK continues to oppose ADMK even in 2021, there will be a considerable loss to ADMK votes. ADMK has Edappadi Palaniswamy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and O. Panneerselvam Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as its powerheads. However, they were not elected Ministers like Jayalalitha. People may need some time to accept these leaders.
Meanwhile, Kamal Hassan made his entry into active politics and there are many who endorse him as CM candidate. Kamal Hassan has his fan following as an actor, and as a politician, he can grab Muslim votes. In the 70s and 80s, ADMK was very popular among the masses because of its founder M. G. Ramachandran, a popular actor and former chief minister. Kamal Hassan is an equally famous actor but his political inning may not be as strong as it was of M. G. Ramachandran.
Later on, Jayalalithaa became the face of the M. G. Ramachandran AMMK party for over 20 years till her death in 2016. After her death, ADMK experienced a leadership crisis. Finally, Panneerselvam and Edappadi Palaniswamy took over the leadership with the consent of party workers, but they didn’t appeal to the masses like MGR or Jayalalithaa.
ADMK had an alliance with BJP and is close to BJP, which took away ADMK’s traditional minority votes in the 2019 election. They form a considerable solid 3–5% of the party’s vote bank. If the alliance persists in 2021, there is a good chance of losing these votes again.
Forming a grand alliance including Congress, PMK, Muslim league, Tamil Manila Congress, Makkal Needhi Maiyyam, CPI, CPM, Viduthalai Ciruthaigal (VCK), and DMDK would help ADMK beat DMK. Cutting off BJP and having an alliance with Congress would help ADMK in reviving its minority vote bank. But chances of this grand alliance are a rare possibility because DMK is not on good terms with Congress.
Cash for votes has been playing a major factor in every election in Tamil Nadu. The ruling party generally tends to distribute a higher amount than the opposition. Since ADMK is currently ruling the state, they have this advantage. If the party gives big amounts of cash to the public, chances can be improved.
Minority voters are DMK’s staunch vote bank, they are bound to vote for DMK again if the party continues its alliance with Congress and ADMK continues to be with BJP. A strong performance in the 2019 elections has boosted the party’s image and strength. DMK completely lost in the 2014 general election and emerged as a party with 0 seats. But in 2019 it emerged as the nation’s third-biggest party with respect to the number of seats won in 2019.
Both DMK and ADMK lost their big leaders between 2016 and 2019. But ADMK did not have a defined successor, while DMK had a successor. Even though the party has allegations of nepotism, the current leader of DMK, Stalin was well known among the public when compared to Mr. Edappadi Palaniswamy of ADMK. A split between AMMK and ADMK may help in southern Tamil Nadu.
BJP is the predominant opposition of DMK and the party in the centre. This party tends to make political strategies that are shrewd in nature. On the other hand, Sasikala’s move has stumped the BJP, which was hoping to control the AIADMK and Tamil Nadu through her. Above all, if north India’s politics is based on Religious polarization, politics in Tamil Nadu is based on “Pride”.
Stalin had been the Deputy Chief Minister and it was during his tenure Chennai was completely developed at the infrastructure level. Also, the “First Graduate” scheme introduced by Karunanidhi has helped a lot of the rural populace and is seen as a boon. If EPS avoids making blunders and if Stalin continues to follow his present strategies, DMK has all the fortune in forthcoming elections.
