The Motive Of Farmer’s Protest Depends Upon Which Side You Belong

singhu border, farmers protest, farmer protest, pm modi, protest, delhi, violence, red fort, lal killa, tricolor, national flag

If you are a BJP supporter, right-winger, or their side of media fans then this protest is politically motivated by congress and other UPA Alliance, maybe even Pakistan and China-funded event. For you, the protesters from Punjab are supporting it because of their demand for a separate country AKA Khalistan. In your mind, protestors are the members of the new ‘Tukda-Tukda gang’ who want to divide India. Your media feeds have convinced you that these farmers are fake and real farmers are already happy with the bill and working in their fields. Agitating farmers are terrorists and they want to secure the future of Rahul Gandhi in active politics. If you are a right-winger, then the real Annadata is a taxpayer but not the farmers. In your logic agitating farmers should be arrested, attacked, killed, beaten, or sent back to their homes. Because for you all those agitating against government policies are anti-nationals and have no place in this country.

If you are a left-winger or UPA, AAP, and Akali Dal supporter then this protest is to save farmers from the people like Adani and Ambani. This protest is to resist the over Privatisation of the Mandi System to ensure the safeguard of MSP (minimum support Price) should not be removed and lastly to save the Mandi system from Private individuals. This particular group believes that the PM should listen to the voices of agitating farmers and take them in confidence before implementing any such laws. These new laws are opposed by almost all the farmers of other states too. They see Modi as Adolf Hitler and a very adamant leader who is loyal to only the corporate houses but not the people of India, especially farmers. He wants to create Hindu Rashtra by dividing people in the name of caste, creed, and religion. Inevitably there are some conflicts.

Apart from all these sides if you are an Impartial or neutral citizen then you might notice, fighting farmers have only one identity: farmers. No one is Hindu, not Muslim, and not Sikh. It is natural for people to bring their identities, for people don’t exist in a vacuum. Naturally, the Morcha has the symbolism of langars or community kitchens and Nishan Sahibs – the Sikh flags everywhere you look. However, everyone here is a farmer. A unique example is the peasant movement of the country. But somewhere there is class conflict, this is a class war. The skirmish between the big bourgeoisie in collaboration with international investment capital and the whole peasantry, including rich peasants and landlords. The dividing line is clear. The big middle-class farmers are on one side of the conflict over corporate-oriented agricultural laws. On the other hand, there is a peasant society including rich farmers. There is division even among the capitalist landlords. It is seen that there is a conflict between the partners of the ruling class too. There is a conflict between media house opinions and there are some honest coverages whom we consider, anti-Modi or anti-establishment media houses. Everyone has their own narrative and that is the reason, the common public’s approach towards agitation is very much confusing.

The neo-liberalism of the last three decades is responsible for this overall unity in the peasant movement. As a result, the cost of cultivation has increased as well as the prices of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides. On the other hand, crop prices have come down. The farmers had to sell their crops at a low price due to hunger. Its consequence was the ‘Suicide epidemic’. Today’s urgent demand is, therefore, the price of the crop should be one and a half times. Three laws passed by the Modi government claim to increase the income of the farmers but there is enough doubt in farmers’ minds and they think these bills backfire then small farmers’ survival will be tough. By enacting the new laws, the government of India aims to support Farmers by eliminating so-called middlemen, who farmer claim is their ATM. Further, the government view is that middlemen operate from Mandis or Agricultural marketing committees (AMC), and hence by reducing the role of the mandi system can improve the fate of farmers. Under the new law, any person or company can buy directly from the farmers and pay them. But we need to understand that AMC’s did not fall from ecstasy or abyss but were most sought by farmers themselves. As farmers faced a lot of hardships to sell their produce, they were set up to assist farmers. They might have failed in their objective or lacked efficiency due to political intervention or some other structural problems. Prior to the establishment of agricultural market committees’ farmers could sell the produce at their will. The system was almost similar to what the new law says but there is a lack of clarity. The PM and the agriculture minister should have a dialogue with farmers and try to resolve this issue, by doing so Modi might earn some goodwill. The government should listen to the voices of agitating farmers, rather than attacking them by various means.

Most of the farming unions and bodies fear that relaxations like this will end up making it much easier for corporations to control the pricing of farmers’ products and in the long run, control the entire market machinery i.e., Exiting from the environment of one less harmful middle man to one more harmful middleman and after the takeover, farmers will be left at the mercy of big corporations. It is outrageous to believe that the farmer having small land will have no bargaining power over corporates. Women have less access to contract farming than men since most of the female farmers aren’t even completed elementary education (and you expect them to understand clauses of contract) and also to men, still today most of the farmers prefer to give thumb impression and you are expecting them to enter in a legal contract. There are many trust issues on government policies, after the failure of policies such as Note Bandi, GST, farmers have developed trust issues, and they are not sure that they will be able to deliver these promises made in the bill. If a dispute arises between the farmer and the private purchaser, the machinery under the bills is so bureaucratic and convoluted that no farmer will have the strength or the resources to fight the purchaser. The small and medium farmers will be ruined. The bills undermine the three pillars of our food security system. The MSP is like a government security net for farmers against bullying by middlemen and a steep decline in prices of farm produce. The MSP is set twice a year by the government for a set of 22 crops. It is set by the Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP) and is the rate at which the government guarantees to buy crops from farmers via different agencies. But due to the unavailability of a written clause of continuation of MSP, farmers fear that’ the government will eventually dismantle the state procurement system and the MSP transaction which they depend on. The rattled and disturbed farmers need the government’s discourse but not dominance. Hope something good may prevail and India restores its peace within.

In a fresh attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Home Minister Amit Shah while addressing a virtual rally said the way leaders of her Trinamool Congress (TMC) are joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), there will be no one left except her in the party at the end of the assembly elections.

Shah’s remark comes after five leaders from TMC quit the party and joined BJP on Saturday. The leaders which left the TMC party are former Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Rajib Banerjee, Baishali Dalmiya, Prabir Ghoshal, Rathin Chakraborti and Rudranil Ghosh.

Reportedly, ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections several leaders from TMC rebels have joined the BJP party. Former West Bengal Minister, Suvendu Adhikari had also joined the BJP in December 2020.

“By the time the elections will be held in Bengal, Mamata Didi will turn back and see no one in the party. There will no one left except for her,” Shah said while virtually addressing the BJP’s mega joining rally at Howrah Dumurjala stadium.

Shah further asserted that BJP will come to power in the state after assembly polls. “I want to make it clear that the BJP would come to power in the state after the elections,” Said the home minister.

The senior BJP leader also questioned that Banerjee should introspect why her party leaders are leaving TMC.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari once again hit out at the Trinamool Congress dubbing it a private limited company. He said that by February 28, there will be no one left in the Trinamool Congress private limited company.

Elections for 294 Assembly seats in West Bengal are expected in April-May this year. However, no dates have been announced by Election Commission yet.

Reportedly, the BJP along with its prominent leaders has been extensively campaigning over the past few months in West Bengal.

The 34-year-old actor exited the movie after several private messages were leaked by the anonymous social media account ‘House of Effie’. The unverified messages were alleged to be from the ‘Rebecca’ actor and described sexual fantasies including BDSM.

However, the actor denied all the accusations levelled against him, stating “I’m not responding to these bull– claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic.”

“Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that,” Hammer added.

A production spokesman for the upcoming movie previously told I an earlier interview, “Given the imminent start date of Shotgun Wedding, Armie has requested to step away from the film and we support him in his decision.”

Earlier this month, Hammer trended on social media after several graphic direct messages allegedly from the actor were leaked. “I need to drink your blood,” the 34-year-old allegedly wrote. Another message read, “You’re my angel! You’re made to save me.”

Writer Jessica Ciencin Henriquez, who was reportedly linked to Hammer in September 2020, said the messages “are real,” adding, “I stand by women, and I hate men who don’t.”

Meanwhile, ‘Shotgun Wedding’, which is produced by Lopez and actor Ryan Reynolds, is scheduled to begin filming on February 22 in the Dominican Republican.

As local train services are not functional for all passengers right now due to COVID-19 outbreak, most of the people use two-wheelers and their vehicles for commuting. Fuel prices being on an all-time high in the city adds to the financial burden on most of us. The state and central government should immediately take measures to bring the fuel prices under control. Value-added tax (VAT) should be decreased. Fuel prices in the city climbed for the second day in the city, on Wednesday. The price of one litre of petrol is now Rs 92.86 and one litre of diesel is Rs 83.30. Bal Malkit Singh, chairman, All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) said, “The people of the country and road transport sectors are adversely impacted by surging fuel prices. The situation is fomenting the crisis in the road transport sector. We are waiting for the budget as we expect some relief from the government in terms of excise duty. There is acute pressure on us to make a call to strongly protest against the insensitivity of the government towards the rising fuel cost and making their operations economically unviable.” Citizens have also expressed their displeasure with the increase in fuel and have asked both the central and the state government to lower the fuel prices.

The Centre’s newly introduced farmer’s bills which have grabbed the headlines since the day it was enacted by the Upper house. The farmers from the several states have been protesting against the three controversial bills at the different borders of Delhi. However, nothing has been done yet. Several talks between the farmer’s group and Centers have taken place but did not end with any conclusion again.

Recently, the farmers from the 21 district of Maharashtra held a rally at the Azad Maidan to express solidarity with peasants agitating near Delhi borders against the Centre’s three new farm laws. The framer’s rally was attended by several state leaders including NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, and Maharashtra Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat.

And now the reports come in that activist Anna Hazare would be launching an indefinite hunger strike against the Union government’s new farm laws on Saturday at his village Ralegaon Siddhi in Maharashtra.

Parliament Canteen Food Became Expensive

parliament, canteen, subsidy,

New prices announced this week shows most items will be sold at par with market rates. A roti will cost Rs 3, a vegetarian meal Rs 100, and a non-vegetarian lunch buffet Rs 700. The Mutton Biryani will now come in at Rs 150 and the British heirloom of boiled vegetables Rs 50. After years of setbacks in efforts to end the subsidy at the parliament canteen which offered dishes like Hyderabadi Mutton Biryani at Rs 65 and boiled vegetables at Rs 12, those entrusted with the unpalatable task have succeeded. Since at least 2016, the government has issued several circulars and the hallways have buzzed with proclamations that the canteen subsidy will end. At best, they spurred modest revisions in rates, and at worst, they fizzled into thin air.

However, last week it was no less than Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla who said that food served in parliament canteens for MPs and others will become more expensive as the subsidy being given out for it has been stopped. Lok Sabha Secretariat can annually save more than Rs 8 crores with the subsidy coming to an end. Talking to reporters about preparations for the next parliament session, beginning on January 29, Mr. Birla also said the parliament canteens will now be run by the India Tourism Development Corporation or ITDC in place of Northern Railways. The latest move to end the taxpayer-support to meals for politicians follows a splashy announcement in 2019 when BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy announced that lawmakers have unanimously agreed to give up the decades-old subsidy. One problem: the Lok Sabha Secretariat had already announced the move to kill the handout in 2016. Back in 2019, sources said, Rs 13 crore was being spent on subsidised food sold in the parliament canteen.

Ajit Pawar Slams Karnataka Deputy Says, “Mumbai Will Always Remain Part Of Maharashtra”

Ajit-Pawar-Karnataka- Laxman- Savadi-mumbai

Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar on Thursday criticized his Karnataka counterpart Laxman Savadi over his remarks that Mumbai should be made part of his state. On Wednesday Savadi demanded that Mumbai be made part of his state (Karnataka).

On that NCP senior leader cited that everyone knows that the metropolis belongs to Maharashtra and that it would always remain its part.

The NCP, which is part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra, asked the BJP to come clear on Savadi’s demand.

The BJP currently rules Karnataka.

Savadi had on Wednesday said Mumbai should be made part of Karnataka and urged the Centre to declare it a Union Territory until then.

His remarks came after Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that areas dominated by Marathi-speaking people on the state’s border with Karnataka should be declared a Union Territory till the Supreme Court gives its final verdict on the issue.

Talking to reporters, Ajit Pawar said, “He (Savadi) took Mumbai”s name to appease the people of Karnataka after our chief minister (Uddhav Thackeray) made the remarks.”

“Mumbai belongs to Maharashtra. It was ours yesterday, is ours today and will be ours in the future too. Nobody can change this. Everyone knows it. Hence, there is no need to pay attention to what he said. In my opinion, he should be neglected,” Pawar cited.

“What is the relation between the demand Thackeray had made and the demand for declaring Mumbai as a Union Territory? It may be a poor attempt to appease the people of Karnataka. There is no logic in it (Savadi’s demand),” the senior NCP leader said.
