Unidentified parachute-like objects were spotted in the Mumbai airport airspace here, raising security concern.

According to airport police, five unidentified objects were spotted over the airport area on Saturday evening by a pilot of Jet Airways when he was about to take a flight off the runway.

He immediately alerted the Mumbai airport’s Air Traffic Controller about the incident, airport police said. Officials then alerted security agencies about the possibility of the “parachutes” being remote-controlled; the case is now being investigated by the Mumbai police along with intelligence agencies.

The authorities of the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) were also informed about the objects spotted over the airport.

MIAL immediately alerted the airport police station, a MIAL official said.

The matter has also been brought to the notice of Mumbai’s Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti.

Sources in the Mumbai police tell that it’s likely that the airborne interlopers were Chinese lanterns, but the objects have not been traced and officials don’t know where they landed.

The police, however, is yet to register a case since no complaint has been received.

“Since no one has filed a complaint with us, we have not registered any case as of now,” said DCP, Zone 8, Virendra Mishra.
