Nearly two weeks after he was booked, Punjab police on Sunday arrested the chief of Punjab Gau Raksha Dal for allegedly thrashing people in the name of cow protection, extortion and Sodomy charges.

The Patiala Police registered an FIR against him earlier this month after a video posted on social media purportedly showed members of the group beating people up in the name of cow protection.

SSP of Patiala Gurmeet Chauhan confirmed his arrest but did not provide any details.

Police sources said he was arrested from Vrindavan where he was hiding after he was booked.

Satish Kumar was on the run ever since he was booked under Section 377 of the IPC on the basis of a complaint filed by cow trader. Apart from beating him up, Kumar also sodomised the trader.

The victim had told a judicial magistrate that Kumar and others had forcibly taken him to a cow shelter in Rajpura where he was sodomised and beaten up. The victim said that Kumar and others also urinated in his mouth.

A case under sections 382 (having made preparation for causing death), 384 (committing extortion), 341 (wrongfully restraining any person), along with sections 148 and 149, of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was also registered.

Kumar had alleged that the Prime Minister’s remarks against cow vigilantism were motivated by “votebank politics” due to upcoming elections in many states.

“The PM’s statement is politically motivated. It is one-sided. If he had warned the butchers not to slaughter or smuggle cow, then his statement would have been justified.

“He is doing vote bank politics to get the butchers’ vote,” Kumar had said. He said the police were free to arrest him.
