The Punjab Police on Monday arrested a J&K native named Irshad Ahmed from Pathankot Cantonment for allegedly spying and sending sensitive details from around the cantonment to his handlers in Pakistan. A handler of his was also arrested in the Jammu area on Tuesday.

suspected ISI

The police said Irshad Ahmed was working undercover as a manual worker at the Indian Army’s 29 Division Headquarter in the Mamoon Cantt in Pathankot, where terrorists struck an air force base last month.

Intelligence agencies have reportedly recovered several photos of sensitive installations from Irshad’s smart phone.
The Pathankot Cantonment is one of the biggest and most sensitive military bases of the Indian Army. The Army division based there includes infantry battalions and cavalry.

Ahmed, was working undercover as a manual labourer at Indian Army’s 29 Division Headquarter in Mamoon Cantonmemt in Pathankot where the recent terror attack took place.

Intelligence agencies have got a number of photos of sensitive military installations and equipments from Ahmed’s phone. They said that he was assigned with gathering images of installations and equipments within the cantonment and send it to his Indian handler, Sajjad in Jammu. They are trying to find out how Ahmed received instructions from Pakistan.

Ahmed’s handler Sajjad who was arrested for illegal possesion of arms, is believed to be a conduit between Irshad and Pakistani handlers. He is said to have sent the photographs to Irshad and Pakistani handlers via chat messaging services or email. Sajjad will be questioned based on what Ahmed says to the security agencies.

Irshad’s arrest is being considered a big catch as it proves that Pathankot is still on the terror radar even after the big terror attack at the airbase early last month. Most often, ISI tends to shift to a new target, realizing that the level of guard is raised in the place once it has been attacked.

This comes in the backdrop of the recent Pathankot terror attack, which had been preceded by the Dinanagar attack in the same region of Punjab some months ago.
