Veteran rocket scientist and propulsion expert V Narayanan has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of the Space Commission, a role that also makes him the head of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Narayanan will succeed S. Somanath, who concludes his tenure next week.

According to an official order from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Narayanan, currently serving as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in Valiamala, will take over the position for two years starting January 14, 2025, or until further notice.

Who is Dr. V. Narayanan?

Narayanan began his career in ISRO in 1984, working on solid propulsion systems for the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). Over the decades, he has held numerous key roles, eventually leading the LPSC, where he spearheaded advancements in liquid propulsion technologies.

He played a pivotal role in the development of the C25 cryogenic stage for the GSLV Mk III rocket, guiding its successful deployment. Under his leadership at LPSC, 183 Liquid Propulsion Systems and Control Power Plants were developed and delivered for various ISRO missions, including significant contributions to Chandrayaan-3 and the PSLV’s second and fourth stages.

Notable Contributions

Narayanan chaired the National Expert Committee that investigated the hard landing of Chandrayaan-2, identifying corrective measures and leading efforts to ensure the success of Chandrayaan-3. His contributions to propulsion systems have been instrumental in advancing India’s space capabilities.

Recognitions

Narayanan has received numerous accolades for his work, including a Gold Medal from the Astronautical Society of India (ASI), a Silver Medal from IIT Kharagpur, and the National Design Award from the NDRF.

His appointment marks a new chapter for ISRO, with expectations of continued advancements in India’s space exploration and technology development.
