Samsung Galaxy Note 2 caught fire in a Chennai bound IndiGo flight no 6E-054 at 7.45 AM on Friday in mid-air. DGCA has confirmed Galaxy Note 2 smartphone caught fire but no damage has been caused to airline or passengers.

After the flight took off, few passengers noticed the smoke smell coming from a hat-rack and alerted the cabin crew. On examination, the cabin crew identified smoke coming from a bag containing Samsung Note 2 kept in the hat-rack of seat 23C.

“The crew noticed smoke from the bin and found the device was emitting smoke after possibly catching fire. They used fire extinguishers on it,” said a spokesperson of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

DGCA spokesperson advised flyers to exercise caution while flying with Samsung Note devices. They should either keep these devices switched off or not travel with them.

US FAA has already adviced against carrying Galaxy Note 7 smartphones onboard US airlines. Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Etihad have also announced bans on carrying Galaxy Note 7 smartphone on-board.

amsung Galaxy Note 2 comes with user replaceable battery, which could have decayed over the years and have led to explosion mid-air. Samsung has confirmed battery issue with latest Galaxy Note 7 and not older Galaxy models.
