The Madhya Pradesh government has said that it will take action against sonography centres conducting sex determination tests under the stringent National Security Act.

State health minister Narottam Mishra made this announcement in a meeting of the State Supervisory Board on Sex Determination Prohibition Act on Monday. Prenatal sex determination is banned in India under the Prohibition of Sex Selection Act.

Presently a doctor found conducting a sex determination test can be sent to jail for up to five years. The NSA Act, though, allows detention up to a year without trial and if found guilty under the NSA, the accused faces a life term or death.
