Showdown in Tamil Nadu Assembly: Governor RN Ravi Walks Out Over 'Disrespect' to National Anthem 2

In an unprecedented move, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi stormed out of the Assembly on Monday, refusing to deliver his customary address, citing alleged “disrespect” to the Constitution and the national anthem.

Tensions erupted when members of the opposition AIADMK gathered in protest, chanting slogans that drowned out proceedings. Speaker M. Appavu ordered their eviction, while Congress legislators also staged a symbolic dissent, wearing black badges. BJP and PMK members exited the House in solidarity with the Governor.

Raj Bhavan later issued a strongly worded statement accusing the Assembly of ignoring a fundamental constitutional duty. The controversy centered on the omission of the national anthem at the start of proceedings, with only the Tamil state song, “Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu,” being sung.

Governor Ravi reportedly urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Speaker Appavu, and other leaders to ensure the anthem was played but left in “deep anguish” after they allegedly refused.

Senior Minister and Leader of the House Duraimurugan dismissed the Governor’s claims, stating that the Assembly has long followed a protocol of playing the national anthem at the conclusion of the Governor’s address, a practice reaffirmed during a similar dispute last year.

“This raises questions about the Governor’s intentions,” Duraimurugan remarked, asserting that Tamil Nadu has consistently demonstrated unwavering respect for the Constitution, national anthem, and patriotism.

The incident has sparked a heated debate, highlighting the growing tensions between the Governor and the state government.
