‘Super Cop’ KPS Gill, who rooted out militancy from Punjab, passes away at 82

Former DGP of Punjab KPS Gill, who is credited with wiping out militancy in the state, passed away after suffering cardiac arrest in Delhi on Friday afternoon. He was 82.

Gill was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi after he was diagnosed with end stage kidney failure and significant Ischemic Heart Disease. “He was suffering from end stage kidney failure and significant ischemic heart disease. Gill had been recovering from peritonitis but died of a sudden cardiac arrest caused by cardiac arrhythmia,” said Dr. DS Rana, Head of the Department of Nephrology.

Kanwar Prasad Gill was known for bringing the militancy in Punjab to halt. A bold officer, Gill has also had his share of controversies. Gill served twice as DGP of Punjab and is credited with having brought the Punjab insurgency under control. KPS Gill retired from the IPS in 1995.

Mr. Gill is credited with rooting out pro-Khalistan uprising in Punjab in the Eighties. In 1988, he commanded Operation Black Thunder to flush out militants hiding in the Golden Temple.

He was conferred Padma Shri in 1989.

“KPS Gill will be remembered for his service to our nation in the fields of policing and security. Pained by his demise. My condolences,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
