In a first in Maharashtra state, Thane Zila Parishad is planning to soon introduce the online tax payment facility for 20 gram panchayats of the district.

“Online tax payment system would be tried in as many as 20 gram panchayats in the district this year,” Chief Executive Officer of Thane Zila Parishad Uday Choudhari said.

“Thane would be the first Zila Parishad in the state to provide the facility for online payment of property tax, house tax, water tax, etc,” he said.

The work on the project is in the initial stages and is likely to be operational by the next month, he said.

He said this would enable the villagers to avail payment facility from their homes. The ease of process would also help increase the promptness of payment, he asserted.

“The platform may be developed indigeniously. Or we may go for the existing software, he said, adding the decision on that would be taken in due course,” he said.

“There are a total of around 430 gram panchayats and as of now, we would start the service in the panchayats which are in the vicinity of urban areas, so that connectivity and other issues don’t pose hurdles, he said. This would also depend on the acceptance by the village members, he added.

Choudhari hoped that the service would be popular among the villagers, saying it would be beneficial to both, the Zila Parishad and the villagers.
