13 students drown in Murud beach

The search for the missing students is on with the assistance from locals.

Thirteen students of Inamdar College in Pune have drowned in Murud beach near Alibaug in Raigad district. The deceased comprise 10 boys and three girls, police said. The incident occurred at 4.30 pm on Monday when they had entered waters for swimming.

“The students were part of a group of around 130 from Pune’s Abeda. Inamdar College and had come to the picturesque Murud beach for a picnic,” Superintendent of Police Suvez Haque said.

“The group failed to anticipate the sudden low tide and were swept away by the waters. The chances of any among the group surviving were grim,” he added.

Inamdar College Principal PA Inamdar said that the senior students, studying computer science, had gone on a college-sponsored annual picnic accompanied by five staff members and other support staff.

“We are shocked by this tragedy. We are making all efforts to help the students and their families with the help of the local villagers and police. A team of our trustees has already left Pune for Raigad for rendering further assistance,” Inamdar said.

The search for the missing students is on with the assistance from locals.

The following are the names believed to be of the children drowned: Shifa Kazi, Sumayaa Ansari, Yusuf Ansari, Supriya Paal, Farhin Sayyed, Iftikhar Shekh, Sajid Chaudhari, Raj Tanjini, Swapnali Sangat, Samrin Shaikh, Shafia Ansari, Rafia Ansari and Sana Munir.

The number of casualties is likely to go up as some more students were reportedly missing in the water.
