Christmas: A season of sharing!

Is Christmas only about Santa Claus? If you ask any child, he/she will only remember Santa Claus and gifts offered by him to little children. If you enter any mall or shopping centre, you are welcomed by the red-coated Santa, with no mention of Jesus Christ at all. But Christmas is not all about Santa Claus and the wonderful gifts that he brings for children year after year. Christmas is the birthday of Jesus Christ. The children innocently associate their gifts with Santa Claus but we forget that the greatest gift that we all received on Christmas Day was our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who was born of simple parents, Joseph and Mary. Yes, Jesus is the reason for this Christmas season. “For God so loved the world that He gave us His one and only begotten Son Jesus Christ, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16). Again in the gospel of St. John, Chapter 1, verse 14, we read “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.” The Word here refers to the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

Christmas is also a season of sharing and giving not just gifts, but also forgiveness to our enemies, tolerance of our opponents, maintaining honour in our relationships, and setting a very good example towards our children. As we draw near to this wonderful season, let me begin by sharing with you this little poem by John and Edna Massimilla.

“Christmas is a time for caring and being with the folks you love.
Christmas is a time for sharing blessings sent from above.
Christmas is a time for giving to those who have some special need.
Christmas is a time for trusting and forgiving, a time for doing a worthwhile deed.
Christmas is a time for music, for Christmas carols we love to sing,
Bringing peace and goodwill to all and praising Jesus Our Lord and King.”

As we celebrate this great festival of Christmas, we cannot but lift up our hearts to the Christ Child and thank Him for all the caring, sharing and giving of your generous hearts during the year gone by. As so we cherish these memories with gratitude during this holy season. May the Child Jesus who is love incarnate, enfold you in His arms. May the gentle peace that he brings, touch you softly from above and fill your hearts and home with peace and love.
