Srinagar: Kashmir’s enduring literary and spiritual legacy will take centre stage on July 12 as writers, scholars, journalists, spiritual leaders and public intellectuals from across India gather at Tagore Hall for a literary event dedicated to the life and philosophy of the 14th-century mystic poet Lal Ded.

The occasion will mark the release of author and journalist Dr Vaidehi Taman’s latest book, Lal Ded – The Mother of Kashmir, an exploration of the saint-poet’s life, teachings and continuing relevance in contemporary society.

The event will also witness the institution of the Lal Ded Literary Awards, recognising outstanding contributions in literature, culture, journalism, education and public life. The honours comprise one Lal Ded International Literary Award, three Lal Ded National Literary Awards, and seven Lal Ded Regional Literary Awards.

Regarded as one of Kashmir’s most influential spiritual voices, Lal Ded’s verses have transcended religious and social boundaries for centuries, inspiring generations with messages of self-realisation, compassion and universal human values. The organisers believe that revisiting her philosophy is particularly relevant in an era that increasingly calls for dialogue, understanding and cultural reconciliation.

Speaking ahead of the event, Dr Vaidehi Taman said the book was the outcome of extensive research aimed at presenting Lal Ded’s philosophy in its historical and cultural context.

“Lal Ded is much more than a historical figure or a mystic poet. She represents the soul of Kashmir’s shared cultural consciousness. While researching this book, I realised that her teachings continue to resonate across generations because they speak of humanity, inner awakening and coexistence. My hope is that readers discover not just the life of Lal Ded, but also the timeless wisdom she left behind,” Dr Taman said.

Beyond the book launch and awards ceremony, the gathering is expected to serve as a forum for conversations on Kashmir’s literary traditions, its shared civilisational heritage and the role of literature in fostering dialogue across cultures.

The event is expected to attract eminent literary personalities, authors, journalists, academicians, spiritual leaders and thinkers from different parts of the country, reflecting the growing national interest in Kashmir’s rich intellectual and cultural traditions.
