Icing on the cake for Team India

Team India under Virat Kohli is enjoying a winning formula which suits both the conventional and the one day game.  After winning the test series with 3-0, the icing on the cake was winning the one day series with 5-0 and thus proving that India’s overseas jinx is a thing of the past. Even though the team was full of young talent, the experience of MS Dhoni, striking form of Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and the death over bowling of Jasprit Bumrah all added to the winning combination. The team passed the real test at the Emerald Islands with flying colours. This is after the absence of the twin spinners Ashwin and Jadeja being rested for the sterner tests ahead at home. If Virat Kohli played like a master with his 30th one day hundred, it was records galore for Team India.  Virat Kohli in the process reached 1000 runs in One Day Internationals for the calendar year.  He achieved this feat in his 18th innings of the year. MS Dhoni holds the number one position of stumpings in ODIs as he surpassed Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 99 dismissals. This is the first time Team India achieved the unique feat of winning an one day series with 5-0 and that too on an away series. It was indeed a complete whitewash and the Sri Lankan side could not face the onslaught of Indian batsmen despite being at an advantageous position at time during the 5 match series. Kudos to Kohli and his team for the incredible show!

The visitors, who remained dominant throughout the series, produced another superb performance during Sunday’s match, dominating the Sri Lankans in all departments of the game. Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned with career best figures of 5/42 as India bowled Sri Lanka out for 238 runs while Lahiru Thirimanne and Angelo Mathews top-scored for the team. Opting to bat, Sri Lanka did not have the greatest of starts as they lost three wickets inside the first 10 overs. However, Lahiru Thirimane (67) and Angelo Mathews (55) steadied the innings and they took the hosts on course of a big first-inning score.

They both did a decent job of rebuilding the innings from 63/3 and took the 185 when Thirimanne went out. And with the fall of his wicket, the hosts suffered from yet another batting collapse in the series. They lost their last seven wickets for 53 runs and eventually got bundled out for 238 in the last over of the innings. Apart from Thirimanne and Mathews, skipper also contributed with a valuable 48 to the team’s total. Bhuvneshwar was well supported Bumrah by who scalped two wickets giving away 45 runs in his quota of 10 overs. Spinner Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal also chipped in with a wicket each. It has been a tremendous performance by Kohli’s men in the ongoing tour. After clinching a 3-0 whitewash in the Test series, they continued their dominance in the shorter version of the game as well as they routed the already criticized Sri Lanka. This is the second successive ODI series defeat for the Lankan team. The two teams will now square-off in the T20 International to be played on September 6.  It was game and a clean sweep for Team India.
