India didn’t start Sunday with rich medal-haul but as day nine progressed, a surprising silver medal came through Khushbir Kaur in women’s 20km race walk.
Khushbir became the first Indian woman to clinch a 20km Race Walk silver medal in the Asian Games by bettering her personal best and setting a new national record in the process.
The 21-year-old from Amritsar clocked 1:33:07 to improve on her previous personal best of 1:33:37, which was also the national record, to finish second at the Marathon Course.
While, Yuki Bhambri clinched India’s lone singles’ medal in tennis at the ongoing Asian Games, settling for a bronze in the men’s event after unforced errors cost him the semifinal clash against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka.
Yuki lost the match 6-3, 2-6, 1-6 in one hour and 46 minutes.
In boxing, Mary Kom assured herself a medal by reaching the semifinals of the women’s fly (48-51kg) category by beating Si Haijuan of China 3-0 to win by a unanimous decision.
However, India’s recurve archers disappointed and have to return empty-handed after the women’s team lost to Japan in the bronze medal playoff by a solitary point.
Again tennis gave India a set back as Sania Mirza and her partner Prarthana Gulabrao Thombare lost their semifinal match 6-7,6-2,10-4, but the duo settled for bronze.
