It’s time to review age old norms

Many people are in favour of construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya. According to me this issue should be resolved by arriving at a consensus between various strata of the society. Earlier the country had witnessed communal riots over the Ram Janmabhoomi and Babri Masjid issue but people have become more practical now. They want development and are aware that politicians are raking up this issue to garner votes before the onset of election. A mosque too can be constructed in the vicinity. Even hotels, shops can be constructed for creating employment for locals.

On the other hand, why can’t a school be built for teaching Ram Charitmanas on a piece of land which is free from dispute? I have noticed that we are forgetting Ramayana. I myself knew a lot about this epic during my school days but today I have forgotten about it. I fail to recollect most of the “chawpais”. Those who are interested to know about the epic can study here and carry out further research which will also sharpen our Hindi language skills. I will offer the same advice to my Muslim friends. They can establish a school for studying Quran and Islamic history. They can also start institutes for imparting training for students preparing for civil services examinations.

Nowadays a lot of debate is happening about whether women should be allowed to enter Shani temple. Women outfits have been spearheading campaign against centuries-old ban on female devotees entering the sanctum sanctorum of Shani Shingnapur temple in Maharashtra. Over 400 women had launched a protest against the tradition of not allowing women at the inner platform (chauthara) of the temple where only men are permitted to make offerings to the deity (Shani). Police stopped women activists from entering into Shani Shingnapur temple after they were blocked few kilometres away from the Temple. Women activists have urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to intervene in this matter and sought his support to end the gender discrimination. Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar had met the trustees of Shani Shingnapur for finding a solution for this issue.

Why menstruating women are denied entry into temples? People should change their mindset as women are excelling in all fields today and are at par with men. We talk about age old norms temples follow while prohibiting entry of women. On the other hand, we don’t pay attention to important issues like keeping Delhi garbage free or Mumbai pollution free. So, friends let us change our attitudes first and focus on basic tasks first.

We are not taking effective steps to control the rising population which is putting a strain on our available resources. China has achieved rapid progress and has also started reclaiming land from sea. When it comes to economic development and technological advancement we are lagging behind China. There is shortage of electricians in our country. Therefore the government must start offering training to 1000 youth. They can also seek the assistance of trainers from foreign countries but the objective is to create skilled workers. Our government must take urgent steps in this matter. We must not be ashamed to seek foreign assistance for the purpose of learning.
