In a shocking incident from Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district, a man allegedly attempted to poison food prepared for guests at his niece’s wedding reception after objecting to her marriage, police revealed on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Mahesh Patil, reportedly gate-crashed the reception at a marriage hall in Utre village, Panhala tehsil, on Tuesday afternoon. Patil, enraged by his niece’s decision to marry without his consent, allegedly mixed a poisonous substance into the food being prepared for the guests.
Fortunately, no one consumed the tainted food. Alert guests caught Patil in the act, but he managed to escape before he could be handed over to the authorities.
Sub-Inspector Mahesh Kondubhairi of Panhala police station stated that the woman, who had been raised in Patil’s home, recently eloped and married a man from the same village. Her decision infuriated Patil, leading to the shocking act during the reception.
The police have registered a case against Patil under sections 286 (negligent conduct with respect to poisonous substance), 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Efforts are ongoing to apprehend him.
Samples of the contaminated food have been sent to a forensic lab for analysis. Thankfully, the timely intervention of attendees averted a potential tragedy.
