For Lionel Messi, scoring goals is just another part of his life. But for his legion of fans, each goal he scores, counts. When Athletic Bilbao take the field on Saturday at the Camp Nou, many will hope the little Argentine scores at least two to complete a historic 400th.

Messi, 27, has scored 356 times in the Barcelona shirt, which include 67 strikes in the UEFA Champions League, and another 42 for Argentina, making it 398 career goals. Messi started the Liga season with a brace against minnows Elche.

The Argentine has scored an incredible 245 league games for Barcelona alone – taking him to second in the list of all time scorers in La Liga, behind only Athletico Bilbao legend Telmo Zarra, who scored 251 time for the Lions.

In a relatively quiet season by his standards, Messi for the first time in four years saw his rival Cristiano Ronaldo winning the Ballon d’Or. Despite helping Argentina to the Brazil World Cup finals, he failed to win the crown, after his side lost to Germany in the final.
