The latest results of five by-elections held in Rajasthan and West Bengal came as a setback to the BJP. On one hand, the Congress registered an impressive victory in Rajasthan, while on the other hand Trinamool Congress made a clean sweep in West Bengal. This is a moral defeat for the BJP and a ‘people’s verdict’ against it. The people of both the states have rejected the BJP’s policy of caste polarisation. In fact, the BJP started reaping the fruits of what it had sown in the forms of demonetisation, GST implementation and economic slowdown.
