Rahul’s political career hangs on victory in Amethi, Wayanad?

Rahul gandhi 1The Congress party workers welcomed Congress president Rahul Gandhi to contest polls from Wayanad apart from Amethi. Rahul’s decision to contest poll has lifted the morale of the Congress workers from the southern states. Already party cadres from southern state wanted him to contest from the south. According to them, Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest the election will strengthen the unity of the north and south. On the other hand, political analysts have a different take on Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest from two constituencies. According to them, if Rahul faces defeat from both the Wayanad and Amethi, it will be a major setback for him and Congress party.

Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai said, “We will have to ask who advised Rahul Gandhi to fight election from Wayanad. If Rahul concentrates on Kerala, then he might lose in Uttar Pradesh. If he concentrates on both the constituencies, then there is a possibility of losing both. If Rahul loses polls from both the constituencies, definitely it will be a major setback as he is the National President of Congress. The Election Commission must frame guidelines to prohibit a candidate from contesting election from two constituencies.”

Already Congress was routed out of power in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls where it could only manage to win 44 seats. The party has gone on a revival mode after winning assembly polls from Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. If Rahul fails to win from both the constituencies, it will have an adverse effect on his political career. Already political analysts have questioned his leadership skills as Congress is yet to find an amicable leader who can take the party forward.

Senior Congress leader Abdul Sattar said, “In 2014, there was a possibility of Modi’s defeat in Gujarat, hence, he contested polls from Varanasi. He had contested election from two constituencies. Rahul Gandhi is contesting election from two constituencies as demanded by the party workers. Even Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee had to face defeat but their political career did not end. In the same manner, even if Rahul Gandhi loses the election from both the constituencies, it won’t affect his political career. Let’s keep faith in democracy. Rahul Gandhi will emerge victorious from both the constituencies.”

Even the grassroot level leaders are not pleased with Rahul as he remains inaccessible to them. According to political experts, a mature politician has his own vision and is aware of the responsibility for his acts and speeches. Rahul Gandhi fails badly for both. He gets carried away by just trying to fit the role of an opposition and forgets his own identity.

BJP MLA Prasad Lad said, “Rahul Gandhi is confident of losing polls from Amethi, hence, he has chosen a constituency which has more Muslim population where BJP might not win the election. Indira Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi had contested polls from Amethi. Rahul Gandhi contesting election from a constituency besides Amethi only shows that Congress’s loss and the victory of Modi. There is no problem if a candidate plans to contest from two constituencies as even PM Modi had contested polls from two constituencies but he had won both the seats.”

BJP took jibes against Rahul’s decision with Union Minister and BJP’s candidate from Amethi Smriti Irani alleging that Rahul Gandhi is confident of his defeat from Amethi and this is the reason why he has decided to contest from a second seat.

Political analyst Vaishali Patil said, “Rahul Gandhi has become conscious about his constituency and filing the nomination. If Rahul loses from both constituencies, it will affect his political career. Filing nominations from two constituencies show the insecurity of Rahul Gandhi. A candidate must have the confidence in winning an election while contesting it. Not only Rahul Gandhi, but many other leaders have filed their nomination from two constituencies and after winning from one constituency, they withdraw their candidature from the other.”

In the run-up to Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi had announced that 20 per cent of the weakest category would be given Rs 72,000 each annually as minimum income if Congress party comes to power. Rahul claimed that the Congress Nyuntam Aay Yojana would benefit 50 million households or approximately 250 million (assuming five members per family). Nyay will cost the exchequer Rs 3.6 lakh crore a year – 1.8 per cent of India’s GDP. The scheme was announced just 17 days prior to the first phase of voting. Rahul Gandhi had termed the scheme as Congress’s surgical strike against poverty.

Wayanad is a rural district that shares its borders with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The seat has been a Congress bastion for decades. Congress leaders from three southern states – Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu – had requested Rahul Gandhi to contest Lok Sabha poll from a second seat. On the other hand, former General Secretary Prakash Karat has expressed disappointment over Rahul’s decision, saying that it shows that the Congress’ priority now is to fight against Left in Kerala.

Rahul Gandhi will lose in Amethi and Wayanad: Maneka Gandhi

Maneka GandhiExpressing reliance over BJP’s victory from both the Amethi and Wayanad LS constituencies, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi on Sunday said that the Congress President will fail to secure his victory in the two seats and BJP will emerge victorious.

“We will emerge victorious from both the seats,” Maneka, who is contesting Sultanpur Lok Sabha seat, told reporters on Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday, Congress announced that Rahul Gandhi will contest from Kerala’s Wayanad parliamentary constituency in addition to Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh which he has been representing in Parliament since 2004. It is believed by the Congress workers that the decision to fight from both the seats to further strengthen the unity between North and South.

It will be the first time when the Congress president will contest elections from two different parliamentary constituencies.

Wayanad will to elections on April 23 while Amethi will vote on May 6. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.

‘Game’ should be played from where terror being controlled: PM on Balakot air strike

Narendra Modi addressing mai bhi chowkidar event 1Addressing a ‘Main bhi Chowkidar’ event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the reason behind the decision for the Indian Air Force to conduct Balakot air strikes was that he thought that “the game” should be played from where terrorism is being remote-controlled.

In the same event, he further said that Pakistan is in a fix because if it acknowledges the air strikes, it will have to accept that there was terror camp there.

“They have been saying that there are no terror camps. Now they have to hide it. They are not allowing anybody to go there. We’ve been told Balakot area is being reconstructed by Pakistan to show that a school is being run there, so that people can be taken there and shown that no terror camp existed there,” he said.

The Prime Minister also took a jibe at those who are abusing him and his government on Balakot air strikes; he stated that those people are helping Pakistan with their statements.

The ‘Main bhi Chowkidar’ event was beamed across the country at 500 places where gatherings of BJP workers, professionals, chowkidars (watchmen), traders, farmers among others will listen to Modi and interact with him through video-conferencing.

Shah makes fun of Rahul’s decision to fight from Wayanad

amit shahTaking a mocking jibe at Congress President Rahul Gandhi, BJP chief Amit Shah on Sunday said that Gandhi took the decision to fight the election from Kerala’s Wayanad fearing that the voters in Amethi will seek an account of work done by his party over the years.

Addressing his first election meeting in western UP, that is scheduled to go on polls on April 11, the saffron party chief said that the ruling party had won all eight Lok Sabha seats in the region in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

“Rahul Gandhi has fled to Kerala as he fears that Amethi voters will seek an account from him,” the BJP chief said.

He also targeted Congress stating that the Congress had given a clean chit to Pakistan terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba in Samjhauta Express bomb blast case, sent Swami Aseemanand and other innocent persons to jail, and had put a tag of terrorism on Hindus.

Odisha farmers to opt for NOTA this time

farmers will give nota 1As per an announcement made by Paschim Odisha Krushak Sangathan Samanwaya Samiti (POKSSS), umbrella body of various farmer organisations which includes more than 50 lakh farmers in Western Odisha, it will mobilise farmers to opt for NOTA in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

“The leaders and the activists of POKSSS have been asked to opt for NOTA (none of the above). They would also campaign and mobilise the farmers to opt for NOTA, instead of voting for the Congress, the BJD and the BJP,” POKSSS Convener Lingaraj told reporters.

Alleging both the BJP and BJD for betraying the farmers, he also said that KALIA and the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi schemes are clever tactics to evade the major demands of the farmers such as complete waiver of loan, implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations and bonus for the agricultural produces at the state level.

Targeting the Congress, Lingaraj stated, “The Swaminathan Commission was formed in 2004 when there was Congress-led UPA government at the Centre. The report of the commission was submitted in 2006.

Though the party was in power for 8 years after the report was submitted, the Congress did not show any interest to implement the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission.”

The organisation has prepared themselves with a set of questions to put pressure on the political parties and printed leaflets with the same: Why the agricultural work has been recognised as non-skilled, why the Farmers’ Income Commission is not being formed, why the government is not acknowledging the incidents of farmer suicides, why the Union and state governments have remained silent over the Mahanadi water dispute, why no measures are being taken to give legal status to share croppers, when will the old relief code will change and why all the political parties are reluctant to give compensation to the farmers.

East Indian Culture and Cuisine — Part II

east indian foodEast Indians celebrate their weddings for a full week. They have the Umbracha Pani, the Paspatni and the Sara from both the boy’s side and the girl’s side. Fugiyas (balloon bread), vindaloo and sorpotel are the main dishes for East Indian Catholic weddings. But the vindaloo and sorpotel prepared by the East Indians are quite different from that made by the Goans and the Mangaloreans. During the ‘Umbracha Pani’, all those attending the ceremony go in a procession around their area singing and dancing to draw water from the well, which is used by the bride-to-be or groom-to-be to bathe. East Indian Marathi songs are played and people, irrespective of whether they are Goans, Mangaloreans or East Indians, enjoy them. Some of the well-known East Indian songs are ‘Mary tuze kes lam lam lam’, ’Gaylan Sakli Sonyachi’ and ‘Sakalche Para Sutlai Vara’. Since there are no wells in Mumbai, people go to one of their relative or friend’s house to bring water. The water is brought in a huge vessel (or handi, as it is called). It is then poured on the bride-to-be or the groom-to-be in his or her respective home. After all these rituals, finally, the day of the wedding arrives.

On the wedding day, the groom-to-be sends a car to pick up the bride-to-be and waits for her outside the church. After she arrives, the best man of the groom-to-be welcomes her with a bouquet of flowers. The couple then walks down the aisle along with the bridesmaids, flower girls, best man, page boy, and other family members to reach the altar, where they are given a special place to sit. There, the priest shakes hands with them and offers his best wishes. The Mass is then celebrated and the priest reads scriptures from the Holy Bible, which is followed by a sermon called the ‘homily’ on the sacredness of their wedding.

After this, a grand reception is held in the Church hall or in a hotel.

Here are some East Indians (Marathi Catholics) who have glorified India through their hard work:  Gonsalo Garcia — Roman Catholic saint from Vasai; Joseph ‘Kaka’ Baptista — Indian freedom activist and a close aide of Lokmanya Tilak; Michael Ferreira — Amateur player of English billiards; Gavin Ferreira — Olympic hockey player and Genelia D’Souza (Bollywood actress).  I too am an East Indian.

Here are some words in East Indian Marathi language to keep you cheerful: Tu kavar hais (Where are you), Varad (Wedding), Rajaar (Rosary), Madrin (Godmother), Padrin (Godfather), Jejus (Jesus), Avar yeh (Come here), Tavar jha (Go there), Kolbi (Wet prawns), Maurya (Fish), Bautis (Baptism), Kumjao (First Holy Communion), Kumsar (Confession).

We East Indians have also produced several East-Indian Marathi CDs and VCDs like ‘Jhansi Chi Rani’, ‘Haun Gaonkar Ami Vasaikar’, ‘Baikocha Bail’ and several others and two East-Indian Marathi movies ‘Tu Maza Jeev’ and ‘Sang Mai Tu Kavar Hais’.

A note to readers: East Indians are the original inhabitants of Mumbai (Mobai, in East Indian Marathi) and their Marathi is a mixture of pure Marathi and Portuguese. However, the educated ones today prefer to speak in English.

FEATURE LETTER DIARY 679x400 e1553672678487LPG subsidy be only on basis of affidavits

Subsidy for LPG is for families having a combined income of Rs 10 lakhs per annum with the central government appealing those above the stipulated income-limit to voluntarily surrender subsidy. However, instead of expecting voluntary surrender, the Union Petroleum Ministry should ask to submit affidavits regarding total family-income to avail subsidy. This will drastically reduce LPG subsidy-burden on the exchequer because those not having voluntarily surrendered subsidy will then avoid filing wrong affidavits to get a subsidy.

Net payable price including of all central and local taxes should be rounded in multiples of Rs 10 or 50 because delivery-persons never return balance-money. The system will further reduce financial burden on the exchequer because of LPG subsidy. At least LPG, if not petrol and diesel, can be brought under GST network for uniformity of prices throughout the country.

New-look translucent LPG cylinders made of fibre-glass ensuring tamperproof full-load supply of LPG gas per cylinders should replace old iron-cylinders with iron-cylinders discontinued to be manufactured in future.

Abnormal heavy discounts on online sale

Multi-page super-costly advertisements are usually seen in leading newspapers offering extra-ordinary heavy discounts on popular-branded electrical and electronics items. Even extra heavy discount is added if items are purchased through credit-cards issued by some specific banks.

Discussion with dealers all over the capital city of Delhi investing hugely for the trade of these items revealed that companies sell all their obsolete models and returned items after claim lodged by consumers through such on-line sale. If it is really so, then all such media-publicity should be directed to compulsorily boldly mention about such bitter reality. Obsolete models and returned items on a claim can then also be sold through dealer-network abolishing warranty-conditions and clearly mentioned on items and invoices about discounted rates, where consumers will be an advantage on selecting required items by seeing in showrooms of dealers.

Department of Consumer-Affairs should make proper study-report on an aspect of extra-ordinary heavy discounts through online sale, and logic behind banks giving extra discounts if such on-line purchase is made through their credit cards.

Code of Conduct for saffron flags?

Recently, I read news about police pressurising members of ‘Chhatrapati Shivaraya Janmotsava Sohala Samiti’ at Kurla, Mumbai, for removing saffron flags mounted at various places during a procession taken out on the occasion of ‘Shiva-jayanti’ and the reason given was Code of Conduct made applicable due to elections. It made one wonder since when was Shivaraya’s saffron flag brought under the purview of Code of Conduct. Saffron flags are displayed during programs held by Shiv Sena; but like flags of other parties, Shiv Sena has never claimed that saffron flag was its official flag. As such, the saffron flag doesn’t belong to any party and it is in fact, a victory-pennon that reminds valiant history of Maharashtra. Under this saffron flag, Shivaraya had brought few ‘mawlas’ together, forming his army. Under this very saffron flag, did Shivaraya establish his huge ‘Hindavi Swaraj’ that was considered to be a dream? Bajirao Peshava and Maratha warriors fought till the end against five powerful kings and the British, for flying of this saffron flag with grace. How can Maharashtra accept bringing such historical saffron flag under the frame of Code of Conduct?

How safe are parking lots in Railway Station areas?

In this country, Railway Administration has given land in the area of few railway stations to private contractors on rent, for parking of two-wheelers. A few persons staying near railway stations are running the business of ‘Pay & Park’. Hundreds of two-wheelers are parked at these places for the whole day. After India’s air-strike over Pakistan, ‘high alert’ has been declared in many important cities, including Mumbai. Mumbai is always on the ‘hit-list’ of terrorists. Considering the earlier bomb-blasts carried out in Mumbai, it is easy for terrorists to hide explosives in the storage area of two-wheelers. Most of the ‘Pay & Park’ areas near railway stations in this country are not under CCTV surveillance and wherever such systems are provided, they are either not adequate or non-operative. Therefore, from the viewpoint of citizens’ safety, it is essential to keep a watch on such two-wheeler-parking lots, in at least such railway station areas which are over-crowded.

Four injured in Tapti-Ganga express derailment

Tapti Ganga express 1Thirteen coaches of Tapti-Ganga express derailed at Chhapra in Bihar. The incident occurred at Gautam Asthan in Chhapra. Atleast 4 persons are reportedly injured in the incident. A major tragedy was averted due to slow speed of the train. Running of trains were disrupted due to the incident.

Patna Blues

patna blues“Patna Blues” is Abdullah Khan’s first novel. The background of the story is in Patna, a few small cities of North Bihar and the nearby rural areas. The main character, Arif, is preparing for the Civil Service Examination, which seems natural in Bihar’s background, because the passion among youth for government jobs, especially of civil service is being seen for a long time. Arif belongs to a lower middle-class Muslim family. His father is an employee in the Bihar Military Police. Arif wants to pass the civil service examination like a common Bihari youth. He is preparing this examination with an optional subject of Public Administration.

While preparing for the Civil Service examination, Arif meets a Hindu married woman, Sumitra. They meet several times for one or another reason. Their relationship turns into a love affair later. The author represents love as a natural act in youth. The author further tells that love doesn’t see caste and religion. Even love eliminates the human’s ability to think good and bad. Love may cross all boundaries, but being a sensible and responsible person, Arif doesn’t do like others. The author puts light on these aspects through Arif’s actions and activities.  In the nineties and in the post period of the year 2000, the effects of religious and political incidents in the country have been incorporated in this novel, as well as the social status of that era has also been revealed. Whether it is a matter of implementing the Mandal Commission’s recommendation or the fall of the Babri Masjid, there is an incident of violence. The effect of all is lying deep on Bihar. The author narrates a gloomy state of affairs across the country arising out of reservation given to the backward class. Because of this, there was the youth’s movement occurs all over the country. The violence took place in a few places too. Patna was also not untouched by this fire. For taking the political mileage, a few people do traffic jam on roads of Patna. Arif and Sumitra stuck in such traffic jam while they were going to PMCH, a premier government hospital of Patna, for the urgent treatment of Sumitra’s father, but they somehow manage to get out of there. How a low middle-class family lives in a small house in Patna, how they welcome guest on regular basis, how they struggle to get harmony with guests, how a younger member of family controls their anger, resulting from regular adjustment etc. have beautifully depicted by the author. This is a story of every family of lower middle or middle class who reside away from Patna. As they still depend on Patna for the higher education and better healthcare, therefore, in case of emergency, they compel to live with their relatives due to low income.  The novel also depicts the tension arising out of some incidents between Hindu-Sikh and Hindu-Muslims. The author has made a living depiction of how innocent people are killed in such incidents caused by tension in two communities. In such circumstances, the authors have well-painted how the common man’s sense of insecurity arises. The ongoing war between faith and unbelief in the story has been thoroughly analyzed. In the crowd, the faith is being killed and the person is seen as behaving like an animal. To make the story interesting and vibrant, the author takes the help of grandmother’s stories, idioms, folklore, myths, etc. These narratives play an important role in the life of a common man, particularly in rural areas. In rural life use of black magic, fear of witch, the terror of Panduba (a ghost who lives in water) Jinn, etc. are still alive. Without them, their life stories are incomplete.

Because of the deep affection of Arif’s brother Zakir in acting, he goes to Mumbai to try his luck, but he cannot get his destination even after several years of struggle. Then, he compelled to go to Delhi for his livelihood. After some time, police catch him in an impression of a terrorist. To find him, Arif and his father go to Delhi, but they do not get a clue of him. Thereafter, they come back to Patna. Years pass, but Zakir does not return home. After the loss of Zakir, Arif’s family becomes almost mad. Somehow, they manage to control their feeling. The author has painted in a poignant way to the sad and disturbing mood of this family. However, Zakir comes back home after leaving the clutches of the police. With this positive fact, the author is successful in delivering the message that human beings should never give up hope.

It seems that whatever the author has depicted, that he has received in life. Since the author’s background is of the lower middle-class family, so, he has kept the lower-middle class family in the centre of the story. The place mentioned in the novel, names, etc. are either matched with real names or have been depicted precisely, which make the story alive. The readers of Patna or Motihari or nearby may find the novel’s story factual because they are familiar with many places mentioned in the novel.

In nutshell, the story revolves around Arif, the civil service examination and Sumitra. The warp of the story has been woven from a love affair, passion towards passing Civil Service examination, social and political conflicts, etc., these look natural in the context of Bihar. The story flows like a river’s water from the beginning to the end. There is no boredom anywhere. Through the legendary story of the grandmother, the author has strengthened his story. It can be said that the author has succeeded in making his novel logical and interesting.

Andhra Pradesh poll campaign: Rahul Gandhi promises Special Category Status

Rahul gandhi rally in andhra pradesh 1Addressing his first election rally in Andhra Pradesh, which goes to simultaneous assembly and Lok Sabha polls, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday promised special category status to the state, if the party is voted to power in the coming Lok Sabha elections. He also expressed surprise that how the parties in the state failed to ‘aggressively’ push the issue.

The Congress President also guaranteed the intention of his party to launch a ‘surgical strike’ on poverty. He termed his proposed minimum income scheme ‘Nyay’ as historic and said that it is a “non-violent weapon” that will be used to uplift the poorest.

Rahul Gandhi took the chance to target PM Modi saying that while the previous Congress-led UPA had created poverty eradication schemes, Prime Minister “Narendra Modi dismantled everything.”

“He destroyed the pillars of MGNREGA and Food Security Act,” the Congress chief added in his over 30 minute speech.
