Tirupati Tragedy: Stampede Claims 6 Lives, Injures 40 During Darshan Token Distribution 2

A stampede near the Vishnu Niwasam ticketing counter at Andhra Pradesh’s revered Tirupati Temple on Wednesday resulted in the tragic loss of six lives and left 40 devotees injured. The chaos erupted during the distribution of darshan tokens for the Tirumala Srivari Vaikuntha Dwara, a high-demand ritual at the temple.

Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of panic as a sudden rush among devotees spiraled out of control. According to officials from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the stampede’s casualties include women and children, with the injured being rushed to local hospitals for treatment.

TTD Chairman B.R. Naidu issued a statement expressing deep condolences to the victims’ families, describing the incident as “unfortunate and avoidable.” He confirmed that one of the deceased has been identified, while efforts are ongoing to identify the others.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, visibly distressed by the tragedy, held a teleconference with officials and expressed dissatisfaction with the crowd management. He vowed swift corrective measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The Chief Minister is scheduled to visit the families of the deceased on Thursday at 11:45 a.m.

“The Chief Minister has taken this incident very seriously. He has warned authorities to ensure such failures are not repeated and is personally monitoring developments,” read a statement from Naidu’s office.

An eyewitness detailed the harrowing experience, saying, “The heavy rush during token distribution led to the stampede. When the gates opened, people surged forward. Out of my 20 family members, six were injured. Women and children were also hurt and taken to the hospital.”

The eyewitness also noted lapses in crowd control and mentioned that the pilgrims had been waiting since 11 a.m., with milk and biscuits provided during the long wait. However, the unexpected rush by male devotees caused a breakdown in order, resulting in injuries and fatalities.

The incident has raised serious concerns about crowd management and safety measures at one of India’s most visited religious sites.

Questioning Justice: Unresolved Murder of Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh Exposes Political Nexus in Maharashtra 4

The lack of resolution in the murder case of Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh raises serious questions about the intent and effectiveness of the Maharashtra government. Despite the passage of significant time, the investigation remains inconclusive, and justice for the heinous crime continues to be delayed.

Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog in Kaij tehsil, Beed district, was brutally kidnapped and murdered in broad daylight on December 9. He reportedly opposed extortion attempts linked to local political strongmen. The post-mortem revealed 56 injuries on his body, and the police recovered chilling evidence, including a video of the accused mercilessly beating the victim. The weapons used in the assault, such as a gas cylinder pipe with iron wires, a wooden baton, and an iron knuckle punch, bore bloodstains, underscoring the brutality of the crime.

Valmik Karad, a powerful local figure and former Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator, has been accused of orchestrating the crime. Karad, who has close political ties as an aide to NCP minister Dhananjay Munde, is alleged to have led a crime syndicate in the region. He was also implicated in an extortion case involving a windmill company just days before Deshmukh’s murder. Deshmukh’s family alleges that his opposition to these extortion activities cost him his life.

The case took a murky political turn when Balaji Tandale, a close associate of Minister Munde, was spotted meeting the accused Karad at a police station in Beed, despite strict security measures. Tandale claimed the meeting was part of CID questioning, but Deshmukh’s family has accused him of facilitating undue political interference. This incident sparked widespread outrage, with opposition leaders accusing the government of shielding the accused and undermining the investigation.

The Chief Minister announced a judicial probe and the transfer of the Beed Superintendent of Police while promising stringent action under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). Despite these measures, opposition parties, including Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction, criticised the government for allowing Karad to surrender instead of arresting him. They have demanded a transparent judicial inquiry, pointing to the apparent failures of the police and investigating agencies.

While the Maharashtra CID has frozen Karad’s bank accounts and initiated property seizures, the broader implications of political interference and delayed justice remain unaddressed. Deshmukh’s brutal murder and the subsequent handling of the case highlight a glaring lack of accountability. The government’s silence on the alleged nexus between local politicians and criminal elements has further fuelled suspicions of collusion.

The integrity of the government’s actions is under question as the case continues to drag on without resolution. The people of Maharashtra are left wondering whether justice will prevail or if the powerful will continue to manipulate the system to their advantage.

CM Fadnavis Declares War on Drugs: 'Youth Being Targeted to Weaken India From Within' 6

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday sounded a clarion call against drug abuse, warning that the youth of India are being systematically targeted through narcotics to destabilise the nation from within. Speaking at the launch of the ‘Nasha Mukta Navi Mumbai’ campaign, an initiative by the Navi Mumbai police to eradicate drugs from the city, Fadnavis described narcotics as an “invisible enemy” that requires a united societal effort to combat.

“India is emerging as a global powerhouse and the fifth largest economy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. But as we rise, our youth are being targeted through drugs to weaken the country,” Fadnavis said, emphasising that this battle transcends Navi Mumbai and is a fight for Maharashtra and the nation.

Comparing India’s stance to countries like Canada that have legalised certain drugs, Fadnavis expressed confidence in India’s ability to win this war. “Bharat is in a position to succeed where others have failed. Through robust coordination across states and districts, we will make Maharashtra and India drug-free,” he declared.

Fadnavis stressed the importance of collective societal action, stating, “This isn’t a conventional war. Fighting an invisible enemy like drugs demands the combined strength of society. Saying no to drugs is not only self-preservation but also true patriotism.”

The chief minister also highlighted the critical need for educating youth about the dangers of drug abuse, urging them to resist peer pressure. “Doing drugs is not cool. Addiction destroys lives, families, and the nation’s future. Mental resilience is the key to rejecting this menace,” he said.

Bollywood actor John Abraham, who attended the event as a campaign ambassador, was lauded by Fadnavis for his personal stand against drugs. “John Abraham’s involvement amplifies the campaign’s reach. Celebrities wield influence, and their words resonate deeply with the public,” the CM said.

Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe provided insights into the city’s drug problem and outlined the steps being taken to address it under the campaign.

Fadnavis concluded with a rallying cry: “This fight against drugs is a battle for the soul of our nation. Your determination to abstain from drugs is the first victory for yourself, your family, and your country.”

BSF Dismisses Claims of Bangladesh Seizing Indian Territory as 'Baseless and Irresponsible' 8

The Border Security Force (BSF) has categorically denied allegations circulating in Bangladeshi media that Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) has taken control of a 5-kilometer stretch of Indian land along the International Border (IB). Terming the reports as “baseless and irresponsible,” the BSF clarified that these claims lack truth and merit.

In an official statement, the BSF South Bengal Frontier emphasised that the alleged area, located in Ranghat village of Bagda block, North 24 Parganas district, remains well within Indian territory. The IB, which runs along the Kodaliya River, is clearly demarcated with reference pillars on both sides, and there have been no changes in the border status or BSF’s duty patterns for decades.

Refuting additional claims that BGB personnel had initiated 24-hour patrolling using motorised boats and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) since December 19, the BSF dismissed these as “concocted stories.” It further stated that both forces continue to operate peacefully on their respective sides of the river in accordance with the India-Bangladesh Border Guidelines, 1975.

Unfenced Area Under Vigilance

The BSF acknowledged that the area in question is unfenced and susceptible to smuggling and infiltration attempts by Bangladeshi nationals. However, it highlighted that strict measures have significantly reduced such activities to negligible levels.

The BSF firmly stated, “Not an inch of Indian land has been, or will be, taken over by the counterpart.” It reassured me that both forces are working to ensure the integrity of the IB remains intact.

Goodwill Under Threat

The reports, allegedly attributed to Lt. Col. Rafique Islam, the newly appointed commanding officer of the 58 BGB, were criticised by the BSF for being false and fabricated. “Such claims will only erode the goodwill and trust between the two border-guarding forces,” the statement concluded.

The BSF’s strong rebuttal reinforces its commitment to safeguarding India’s territorial sovereignty and maintaining peace along the sensitive border region.

SC Grants Interim Bail to Asaram on Medical Grounds in Rape Case Till March 31 14

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to jailed self-styled godman Asaram in a 2013 rape case on medical grounds till March 31.

Notably, a bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal directed Asaram not to meet his followers post release.

The top court said 86-year-old Asaram was suffering from various age-related health conditions besides a heart ailment.

The top court had sought Gujarat government’s response on Asaram’s plea for suspension of life sentence awarded to him by a Gandhinagar court in 2023.

The SC said it would only examine the issue on medical grounds.

On August 29, 2024, the Gujarat High Court rejected Asaram’s plea seeking the suspension and found no case to grant him the reprieve.

The trial court in January, 2023, convicted Asaram in the 2013 case, filed by a woman who lived in his ashram near Gandhinagar when the alleged crime took place.

Asaram is currently lodged in a Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan in another rape case.

Ajit Pawar Sparks Controversy: 'You Don't Own Me,' Snaps at Public Demands in Baramati 16

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stirred controversy during a public event in Baramati on Sunday by snapping at attendees who presented him with numerous petitions. Visibly irritated, Pawar declared, “You have voted for me, but that doesn’t mean you own me,” and questioned whether the public had made him their servant.

The remarks from the senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader drew criticism and reignited debates about politicians’ accountability to their constituents.

In contrast, Maharashtra BJP chief and state cabinet minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule underscored the importance of public trust, stating on Monday, “It is the people who bring leaders to power, and fulfilling their promises is the government’s priority.”

Pawar’s outburst has left political circles buzzing, with many questioning the implications of such a statement from a leader of his stature.

HMPV Spreads to Nagpur: Two Kids Test Positive, India’s Tally Hits Eight

India has confirmed two more cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Nagpur, Maharashtra, involving a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy. This brings the total number of infections in the country to eight, as the virus—first identified in China—raises concerns over its similarities to the initial stages of COVID-19.

HMPV recently garnered global attention following a surge of cases in China. While the Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat governments have assured citizens there is no immediate cause for panic, Delhi has taken proactive measures, directing hospitals to prepare for a possible rise in respiratory illnesses.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) detected the country’s earlier cases in Karnataka during routine surveillance of respiratory pathogens. In light of the growing tally, Union Health Minister JP Nadda reassured the public, stating that HMPV is not a new threat. “Health experts have clarified that HMPV, identified in 2001, has been circulating globally for many years. The virus spreads through the air, typically via respiration,” he said during a Monday briefing.

While no fatalities have been reported in India, health authorities are closely monitoring the situation to mitigate any potential escalation in cases.

Mumbai Jewelry Scam Unveiled: Torres Jewellers Owners Accused of ₹13.48 Crore Fraud, Investors in Uproar 19

A massive financial scam has rocked Mumbai, with Torres Jewellers accused of defrauding investors of over ₹13.48 crore. The Shivaji Park Police have filed an FIR against the company’s directors and CEO, following complaints from scores of investors who gathered outside the company’s Dadar office demanding the return of their money after promised returns abruptly stopped.

The FIR, registered under Sections 318(4), 316(5), and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Sections 3 and 4 of the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (MPID) Act, names Platinum Hern Pvt. Ltd., which operates the Torres Jewellers brand. The accused include directors Sarvesh Ashok Surve and Victoria Kovalenko, CEO Taufik Riaz alias John Carter, General Manager Tania Casatova, and Store In-Charge Valentina Kumar. The case has now been handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for further investigation, but no arrests have been made yet.

Investors, many of whom had invested substantial sums, claim they were lured into schemes offering a guaranteed 10% weekly return. For over a year, the company appeared to honor its promises, maintaining regular payouts until December 2024. However, payments abruptly ceased two weeks ago, sparking outrage and panic among investors. Police were deployed at the company’s premises to manage the growing crowd of frustrated victims.

The fraudulent scheme involved enticing investors to purchase moissanite stones and gems with a promise of an 11% weekly cashback on the purchase value for one year. A ₹1 lakh investment was assured to yield ₹11,000 weekly, translating into a staggering ₹5.72 lakh in returns within a year—an unsustainable 400% profit. The firm’s tactics included flashy interactive sessions, expensive giveaways, and aggressive social media campaigns to attract potential investors.

DCP (Zone I) Prakash Gaikwad stated, “Based on a complaint received two days ago, we initiated investigations; however, the showroom was already closed. The process to register an offence at the Navghar police station was underway.”

With growing allegations and the discovery of more victims, the financial losses could potentially run into crores. The unfolding scandal has left investors angry and desperate, while the accused remain at large, raising urgent questions about regulatory oversight and investor protection.
