Chhattisgarh Journalist Murder: Prime Accused Contractor Suresh Chandrakar Arrested in Hyderabad 2

Suresh Chandrakar, the main accused in the chilling murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, has been apprehended by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Hyderabad, police confirmed on Monday.

Chandrakar, a contractor by profession, had been on the run since January 3, when Mukesh’s body was discovered in a septic tank at a property owned by the accused in Chattanpara Basti, Bijapur. Mukesh, a 33-year-old freelance journalist, went missing on January 1.

The SIT’s late-night operation on Sunday led to Chandrakar’s arrest, adding to the detentions of his brothers, Ritesh and Dinesh Chandrakar, as well as supervisor Mahendra Ramteke, who were earlier taken into custody.

Mukesh’s murder is speculated to be linked to his recent report exposing alleged corruption in a road construction project in Bijapur. The report, aired on NDTV on December 25, had directly implicated contractor Suresh Chandrakar in the controversy.

Political accusations have further intensified the case. While Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma claimed Chandrakar was affiliated with the Congress, the opposition alleged he recently joined the ruling BJP, fueling a heated political debate over the incident.

The arrest of Suresh Chandrakar is expected to shed light on the motive and circumstances surrounding the journalist’s gruesome murder, as calls for justice continue to echo across the region.

Prashant Kishor Arrested Amid BPSC Exam Controversy, Sparks Political Storm in Bihar 4

Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor was arrested early Monday while on a hunger strike at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, demanding the cancellation of the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) exam held on December 13. Kishor, along with his supporters, was removed by the police and taken to Patna AIIMS for a medical check-up, according to his team.

Patna District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh confirmed the arrest, stating, “Kishor and his supporters were arrested for holding an illegal dharna near a restricted site. They will be produced before a court.” The sit-in near the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Gandhi Maidan was deemed unauthorized, prompting police action.

Kishor launched his hunger strike on January 2, supporting civil service aspirants calling for the cancellation of the BPSC exam, which had been marred by allegations of a question paper leak. In response to the controversy, BPSC conducted a retest on January 4 for a select group of candidates, which reportedly proceeded without any irregularities.

Of the 12,012 eligible candidates, 8,111 downloaded their admit cards for the re-exam, while 5,943 appeared at 22 centers. BPSC declared the retest peaceful and free of malpractice, further dismissing demands for a broader cancellation.

Kishor’s arrest has added fuel to the ongoing debate, with critics questioning the government’s handling of the exam controversy and its approach to dissent. The incident underscores the growing tensions in Bihar’s political landscape over issues of accountability and transparency in public examinations.

Kejriwal Promises to Waive ‘Inflated’ Water Bills if AAP Returns to Power in Delhi 6

AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday promised to waive the “inflated” water bills received by people in Delhi if his party returns to power in the upcoming assembly polls in the national capital next month.

In a press conference, Kejriwal said that people were “distressed” due to water bills worth thousands and lakhs of rupees being sent to them by the Delhi Jal Board.

He alleged that the inflated water bills started arriving after he went to jail and urged people not to pay those bills.

“I have said this earlier, but today I am making a formal announcement: when AAP comes back to power after the assembly polls, these inflated bills will be waived. Those who think their bills are incorrect need not pay them,” the former Delhi chief minister said.

The AAP government provides free 20,000 liters of water per month and over 12 lakh households in the city have benefitted from the scheme, he added.

The AAP is seeking to return to power for the fourth consecutive term after the elections to the 70-member Delhi Assembly next month.

BJP's Power Play: Verma and Bidhuri Take on Kejriwal and Atishi in Delhi Poll Battle 8

The BJP has unveiled its first list of 29 candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, sparking a high-stakes political showdown. Among the key contests, former MP Parvesh Verma will challenge AAP leader and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, while ex-MP Ramesh Bidhuri takes on Chief Minister Atishi in Kalkaji.

The New Delhi seat, a stronghold of Kejriwal since 2013, is set to witness a dramatic battle involving heirs of political legacies. Verma, son of former chief minister Sahib Singh Verma, has been actively campaigning even before the official announcement, claiming early approval from BJP’s national leadership. Meanwhile, Congress has fielded Sandeep Dikshit, son of three-term chief minister Sheila Dikshit, completing a triad of political dynasties in the fray.

The BJP’s candidate list reflects a strategic mix of seasoned politicians, defectors from rival parties, and fresh faces. Prominent leaders who recently joined BJP, such as former Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely, are among the party’s top bets. Lovely will contest from Gandhi Nagar, replacing sitting BJP MLA Anil Bajpai, who had earlier defeated him in the 2020 polls.

In Jangpura, Tarvinder Singh Marwah, a three-time Congress MLA who switched to BJP in 2022, will face AAP’s Manish Sisodia. Other notable candidates include Kailash Gahlot from Bijwasan, Raaj Kumar Anand from Patel Nagar, and ND Sharma from Badarpur—seats where former AAP leaders now represent BJP.

The BJP’s lineup also features high-profile incumbents like OP Sharma (Vishwas Nagar), Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta (Rohini), and Ajay Mahawar (Ghonda). Meanwhile, prominent party leaders like Dushyant Kumar Gautam and Ashish Sood will contest from Karol Bagh and Janakpuri, respectively.

With elections to the 70-member Delhi Assembly scheduled next month, the BJP is aiming to dismantle AAP’s decade-long dominance in the city. Party officials expressed confidence in their “strong” candidates, projecting them as agents of change in a city grappling with governance challenges.

The stakes are high, and the battle lines are drawn as Delhi gears up for an electrifying electoral showdown.

China Dismisses Massive Flu Outbreak Reports, Calls It Safe for Travel 10

China on Friday downplayed reports of a large-scale outbreak of HMPV flu overwhelming hospitals, asserting that respiratory illnesses this winter are less severe compared to last year. The Foreign Ministry also emphasized that the country remains safe for travel.

“Respiratory infections tend to peak during the winter season in the northern hemisphere,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated when questioned about the spread of influenza A and other respiratory diseases. She dismissed concerns fueled by social media videos showing overcrowded hospitals.

“The diseases appear to be less severe and are spreading on a smaller scale compared to the previous year,” Mao added. Assuring the public, she said, “The Chinese government cares deeply about the health of both its citizens and foreigners in the country. It is safe to travel in China.”

Mao also cited preventive guidelines issued by the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, addressing respiratory illnesses typical during the winter months.

Reports of a significant flu outbreak have circulated widely in India, Indonesia, and other nations in recent days, sparking concerns. However, Chinese health officials described the situation as a routine seasonal occurrence, noting that the country has been experiencing unusually severe cold weather over the past few months.

Chhattisgarh: Three Detained in Connection With Bijapur Journalist’s Murder 12

Three persons have been detained in connection with the murder of a 33-year-old journalist whose body was found in a septic tank on a local contractor’s property in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, police said on Saturday.

Mukesh Chandrakar, a freelance journalist, went missing on January 1, and his body was found on Friday in the septic tank on a property owned by contractor Suresh Chandrakar at Chattanpara Basti in Bijapur town.

“Three persons have been detained in connection with the murder and are being interrogated,” an official here said.

The police, however, did not disclose their names and said the details would be revealed later in the day.

Mukesh worked as a freelance journalist for news channels, including NDTV, and ran a YouTube channel, ‘Bastar Junction’, which has some 1.59 lakh subscribers. He had played a crucial role in the release of a CoBRA commando, Rakeshwar Singh Manhas, from Maoists’ captivity in April 2021 following the Takalguda Naxal ambush in Bijapur, wherein 22 security personnel were martyred.

He went missing on Wednesday evening, and his elder brother Yukesh Chandrakar lodged a complaint with the police the next day, a senior police official said.

Tracking Mukesh’s mobile number, police reached the property owned by Suresh Chandrakar and found the body in a septic tank, which was freshly cast with concrete slab, he said.

Police suspect the murder is linked to a recent report of irregularities in road construction work in the district the victim had covered. Suresh Chandrakar is said to be involved in the work.

Journalists held a symbolic road blockade at Hospital Chowk on National Highway 36 in the city in the morning, demanding that the contractor’s properties in Bastar division, including Bijapur, be attached and a case be registered against him.

They also demanded a death sentence for the contractor and others involved in the murder, removal of security detail for him, and sealing of his bank accounts, among other demands.

The protesting journalists also sought the suspension or transfer of the Bijapur superintendent of police.

Protestors have warned of an indefinite road blockade from Sunday if their demands are not met.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Friday assured that the culprits would be arrested at the earliest.

Meanwhile, members of the Raipur Press Club on Friday gathered at Jai Stambh Chowk and demanded action against the killers and sought that the state government constitute a special investigation team to probe the murder.

India's Forex Reserves Plunge by $4.1 Billion Amid Market Volatility 14

India’s foreign exchange reserves fell sharply by $4.112 billion to $640.279 billion in the week ending December 27, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday. This marks a continuation of the declining trend, with the reserves dropping by $8.478 billion the previous week to $644.391 billion.

The decline has been attributed to a combination of currency revaluation and the RBI’s interventions in the forex market to curb rupee volatility. India’s forex reserves had peaked at an all-time high of $704.885 billion at the end of September before beginning their downward trajectory.

The fall in reserves was primarily driven by a $4.641 billion decrease in foreign currency assets, which now stand at $551.921 billion. These assets, expressed in dollar terms, account for the valuation effects of non-US currencies such as the euro, pound, and yen held in the reserves.

On a positive note, gold reserves increased by $541 million, reaching $66.268 billion during the same period. However, Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) fell marginally by $12 million to $17.873 billion. The country’s reserve position with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) remained unchanged at $4.217 billion.

The fluctuations in forex reserves reflect ongoing global market pressures and the RBI’s active measures to stabilize the domestic currency, signaling the challenges of maintaining a robust external account amidst volatile conditions.

Consumer Prices Could Rise 3-Fold in Poor Nations by 2050: Study 16

Even under ambitious climate policies, lower-income countries would see consumer food prices rise 2.45 times by 2050 while producer prices would rise 3.3 times, a study has found.

While the rise in consumer prices is less pronounced for farmers in lower-income countries, it would still make it harder for people in these countries to afford sufficient and healthy food, said researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Germany.

“In high-income countries like the US or Germany, farmers receive less than a quarter of food spending, compared to over 70 per cent in Sub-Saharan Africa, where farming costs make up a larger portion of food prices,” said David Meng-Chuen Chen, a PIK scientist and lead author of the study published in Nature Food.

“This gap underscores how differently food systems function across regions,” he said.

The researchers projected that as economies develop and food systems industrialise, farmers will increasingly receive a smaller share of consumer spending, a measure known as the ‘farm share’ of the food dollar.

For the analysis, the researchers assessed food price components across 136 countries and 11 food groups, using statistical and process-based models. They studied prices of food both consumed at home and away from home.

“Most models stop at farm costs but we went all the way to the grocery store and even the restaurant or canteen,” Chen said.

Analysing entire food value chains also helped the researchers provide insights into how policies aimed at mitigating greenhouse gases impact consumers.

“Climate policies aimed at reducing emissions in agriculture often raise concerns about rising food prices, particularly for consumers. Our analysis shows that long supply chains of modern food systems buffer consumer prices from drastic increases, especially in wealthier countries,” Chen said.

However, these climate policies impact poor consumers differently, the researchers said.

Consumer food prices in richer countries would be 1.25 times higher with climate policies, even if producer prices are 2.73 times higher by 2050, the researchers found.

In contrast, lower-income countries would see consumer food prices rise by a factor of 2.45 under ambitious climate policies by 2050 while producer prices would rise by a factor of 3.3, they found.

“Even under very ambitious climate policies with strong greenhouse gas pricing on farming activities the impact on consumer prices by 2050 would be far smaller in wealthier countries,” said author and PIK scientist Benjamin Bodirsky.

Revenues from carbon pricing — when governments charge one for emissions produced — could be used to support low-income households, the researchers said, citing a 2021 PIK study that showed that the households would be better off this way despite food price inflation.

“Climate policies might be challenging for consumers, farmers and food producers in the short term but they are essential for safeguarding agriculture and food systems in the long run,” said author Hermann Lotze-Campen, who is also the head of the research department — ‘Climate Resilience’ — at PIK.

“Climate policies should be designed to include mechanisms that help producers and consumers to transition smoothly, such as fair carbon pricing, financial support for vulnerable regions and population groups, and investments in sustainable farming practices,” Lotze-Campen said.

BJP Slams Karnataka Congress for Alleged Goshala Scheme U-Turn 18

The Karnataka BJP has accused the Congress government of allegedly discontinuing the ‘Goshala’ scheme, an initiative launched by the previous BJP regime to protect cows and promote their welfare in the state. Under the BJP’s tenure, 35 Goshalas (cowsheds) were sanctioned across Karnataka.

In a fiery post on ‘X’, the BJP asserted, “Protecting cows is like preserving the culture of this land. The Congress government’s abandonment of the BJP’s Goshala project shows a lack of commitment to this cause.” The party also alleged that the Congress administration was more concerned about appeasing “beef eaters” than preserving cows and maintaining cultural values.

Citing media reports, the BJP claimed the Congress government is citing a lack of cows as a reason to shut down the Goshalas. “This is merely an excuse. If their intention was genuine, these facilities would already be operational,” the BJP alleged, further condemning the move as a betrayal of the sentiments of millions of cow worshippers.

Responding to the accusations, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil clarified that the Congress government had not scrapped the scheme. Instead, he announced that administrative approval had been granted to strengthen the 14 existing Goshalas and continue work on the remaining ones. Patil reassured reporters that 14 new Goshalas had already been completed and that the government remained committed to supporting cow welfare.

The BJP’s allegations and the Congress government’s response have reignited a heated debate on cow protection, cultural preservation, and political priorities in Karnataka.
