What are Hindu Principles & what comprises ‘Hindutva’ Outlook?

In the recent past, the entire political system and the Vote Banks have divided into Hindutva and Secularism. The word Hinduism is too much exploited even on social media. In an actual sense, the Hindu religion is the lifestyle of people. If we read about the ‘Hindutva’ upholders — Savarkar and his contemporaries in the RSS — they have well defined the connotation of the word. According to them, the Muslims and the Christians are for sure out of the purview of the given ideology. They even proposed that if these religious minorities don’t accept the verdict given by them, they should be deemed as second-class citizens. The ethnic description of the land is Bharata-Varsha and the substitute name Bharat is sanctified by the 1950 Constitution as a valid and official name for the country. Dharma is a word which encompasses the totality of the human activities in its social context. Nehru, for example, popularised the notion of being progressive, modern, and enlightened by ridiculing the beliefs, eccentricities of the conventional Brahmans, particularly, the scholars and the holy class. He was fortunate that someone like Madan Mohan Malviya or Tagore had vanished from the scene, leaving India without an awe-inspiring proponent of the Indian civilisation. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, the phrase “Hindutva” did not exist before 1830. It was fashioned by the English colonialists. There is no mention of the terms “Hindu” or “Sanatana Dharma” in the Vedas, Puranas or any other religious texts prior to 1830 AD nor are they found in any imprinting or in any record of foreign travellers to India before the English rule. The term “Hindustan” was first used in the 12th century by Muhammad Ghori, who dubbed his new subjects “Hindus”.

Somewhere I read about Hindutva, explained by Dr. Prithi Paul; she says that “The patience of the Hindu is not due to an appealing temperament of the mind. It rests on a philosophical substance, on the authoritative belief that the essence of “I” is homogeneous with the essence of the ‘Thou’, as expressed in the Upanishadic Mahavakya: “Tat Tvam Asi.” Mahatma Gandhi was a fundamentalist Hindu, real and a genuine fundamentalist Hindu, who was Universalist, Compassionate, heroically Courageous, and absolutely Faithful to the Mahavakya: “Sarvam Idam Khalu Brahma”. In more than the 95 hard-cover volumes of his collected writings, one would not come across a single verb, or adjective, or noun of insult, or of any contempt for the British who ruled India, despite all their taxing, looting and famishing with the help of the military, the court of justice and a mercenary Civil Service. However, in contrast, the genuine fundamentalist Muslim was Jinnah with his Direct Action and his readiness to wage war against the other Kaum as a fundamental right for his Kaum. For Mahatma, the truth was God and Ahimsa was the right way of being political: two dharmika virtues constantly reiterated throughout the Mahabharata. On the other hand, the fundamentalist belonging to the opposite Kaum cannot relinquish the duty of exclusion and hostility to the other Kaum. One needs to keep these two attitudes, these two cultures, well in the mind to understand the crime done to Indian polity by the indoctrination of the secularist mentality.

In Europe, the secularism has had its proponents: Montaigne, La Rochefoucauld, Rousseau, Voltaire, Mazzini, John Stuart Mill, John Ruskin, Goethe, Hoffman, Rilke, and so many others. But who are salient, if any, Indian proponents of secularism. The Muslims and the Christians are not subscribing to the formula ‘Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava’ and of its content. The fact is that the Hinduism is at the antipode of the revealed religions. (In my writings, I do not use the word Hinduism; rather I use the word “Brahmanism”, i.e. the way of life based on the Absolute Reality, Brahman, which manifests itself into all forms of life, as the Ocean-Brahman manifests itself as the Jiva-Brahman-wave). That was at the root of the Mahatma’s declaration, during his last Delhi phase, asking Hindus not to retaliate while the Muslims were cutting down their fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and he threatened to fast to death if they did retaliate. That was the Mahatma’s greatest and noblest act in the service of the humanity bequeathed by the Acharyas. Compared with the long history of Hindu tolerance, secularism, as taught by the Congress and its mercenaries and the sycophants, is as material as an oasis-mirage in the Arabian Desert. Leaders like Nitish Kumar, Mulayam and Lalu ought to see the film “Garam Hawa” (with the script written by Kaifi Azmi, the father of the actress Shabana Azmi) to have a fair understanding of the genesis of the vote bank, which comprised the former supporters of Partition and then found themselves trapped within India).

That is why, though the BJP is right in upholding its Hindutva ideology, the fact nonetheless is degrading reduction of the Dharma as it has been taught, transmitted, practiced down the millennia. It is wrong to compress the hallowed Dharma into an imitation of the Muslim vote bank. The BJP ought to revive the spirit of the ‘purusharthas’, the metaphysics, the social grammar of tolerance, the energy, which created Ajanta, Ellora, Elephanta, Konarak, Lingaraja, Rameswaram, and Chidambaram. These are the creations of spiritualities, which were also concurrently secular. No civilisation has produced more abundantly and more public beauty to dress the highest spirituality, as has India of the forest dwelling and renouncing Acharyas. It is that Hindu civilisation which ought to inspire the BJP, not the memory of a mere Rath Yatra. Throughout the India’s ancient history, the word Hindu was never meant to denote religion. It was a geographic and cultural term used by the Greeks, Persians, and Arabs, derived from the Sanskrit Sindhu, to describe the people living by and beyond the river Sindhu. The Greeks modified Sindhu to Indus, and it is said that the ancient Persian explorers because of their pronunciation rules, dropped the letter S from Sindhu, and called the people living around the Sindhu River as Hindus. The term “Hindutva” is derived from the two terms “Hindu Tattva”, which literally means “Hindu Principles”. Now the question is — what are the Hindu Principles and what comprises the “Hindutva” Outlook? To answer this question, we would have to begin with the history of the Hindus. The history of the Hindus is the history of a civilisation that has developed in its natural state, without interruption, since antiquity. Its age is dated to be between five and nine thousand years.

Gujjar leader Bainsla starts dharna in Rajasthan for 5% separate quota

gujjarGujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla on Friday started a dharna along with his supporters on the railway tracks in Rajasthan’s Swai Madhopur district, demanding reservation for five communities including Gujjars.

Bainsla last month gave a 20-day “ultimatum” to the state government to clear its stand on reservation to the communities in government jobs and educational institutes, failing which he threatened of reviving the quota agitation. As the deadline lapsed on Friday, Bainsla after holding a ‘Maha Panchayat’ at Malarna Dungar in Sawai Madhopur district, started the sit-in along with his supporters, blocking trains.

“Things are changing fast. I have not come here but the crowd has brought me on the railway tracks. People cannot be fooled all the time. It is a fight to do or die. State government should stand on its promise. It will be a peaceful protest. I will lead the protest and all the youths will support,” Bainsla told reporters.

As the protest started, high-level meetings were held in the state capital to find out ways to pacify the agitators. The protestors are demanding five per cent separate reservation to Gujjars, Raika-Rebari, Gadia Luhar, Banjara and Gadaria for government jobs and admission in educational institutions.

Currently, these communities are getting one per cent separate reservation under the legal limit of 50 per cent under the most-backward category in addition to OBC reservation.

NCP hits out at BJP, Fadnavis on bid to lure K’taka MLAs

city

The NCP Friday attacked the BJP over audio clips in which its Karnataka chief BS Yeddyurappa is purportedly heard wooing a JD(S) MLA with a “Rs 50 crore” offer in an alleged bid to topple the HD Kumaraswamy government in the southern state.

Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy Friday released two audio clips purportedly of Yeddyurappa trying to lure JD(S) MLA Nagan Gouda, claiming the BJP was trying to topple his government.

Yeddyurappa has already trashed Kumaraswamy’s charges, dubbing the clip as “fake”.

NCP national spokesperson Nawab Malik Friday said 11 Congress and JD(S) legislators were lodged at hotels in Mumbai and demanded that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis clarify from where he was going to arrange for the money.

“#Karnataka CM @hd_kumaraswamy has revealed a recording that exposes @BSYBJP (#BSYeddyurappa) where he assures a MLA that they will receive 50 Cr in #Mumbai. @Dev_Fadnavis cabinet colleague had said that there will be no @INCIndia government in Karnataka,” Malik said on Twitter.

“This means that @Dev_Fadnavis will fund 11 MLAs the 50 Cr rupees. Mr. Fadnavis must clarify, from where he is going to arrange this money? #CorruptBJP #CorruptFadnavis,” Malik charged in his tweet.

“Quota to Marathas means permanent crutches to them”

marathaBy granting reservation to the Maratha community, the Maharashtra government has given them permanent crutches which they will never be able to shed, anti-quota petitioners argued in the Bombay High Court on Friday.

The government has destroyed the concept of equality by setting up a special category – Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC)- for the Maratha community, the petitioners argued.

A division bench of justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre heard arguments for the third day on a bunch of petitions challenging the state government’s decision granting 16 per cent reservation to the Maratha community in government jobs and educational institutions.

“Reservation cannot be mistaken for a privilege. The state government by trying to bring the community up has given it permanent crutches. At some point, they need to shed the crutches,” senior counsel Shrihari Aney, appearing for one of the petitioners Uday Dhople, argued.

He added that through this decision, the government has destroyed the concept of equality in the society.

“The Constitution of India has a golden thread by way of Article 14, which speaks of right to equality. Maharashtra government’s decision is an attempt to assault and destroy this Article,” Aney said.

“The government cannot divide the nation/society into small fragments. This decision of the state is a prime example of erecting narrow silos that shuts doors for people to have equal opportunities at jobs and education,” the senior counsel, who was formerly state advocate general, argued.

He added that as per the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission report, Marathas and Kunbis are one and the same caste.

“Kunbis are already included in the Other Backward Class (OBC) and hence even Marathas should have been included in the same category of OBC instead of creating a special category of SEBC,” Aney said.

To this, Justice Dangre said, “Presently, only the Marathas may be included in the SEBC category. However, in future if the government feels that some other caste or community is also backward, then that caste or community could also be included in the SEBC.”

Aney argued that the state government cannot go beyond the 50 per cent rule for reservation.

“All other states have been very careful to not exceed the 50 per cent cap for reservation. Maharashtra presently has 78 per cent reservation. On this basic principle itself the decision of the government should be quashed and set aside,” Aney said.

The government cannot encroach upon the 50 per cent earmarked for the open category.

He also questioned the commission’s report on the basis of which the government took the decision. He claimed the commission’s data collection was contradictory to its conclusion that the Maratha community was educationally backward.

“The data collected by the commission by way of survey has no reference to the educational backwardness of the community. In its final conclusion, the commission has said that the community is socially as well as educationally backward,” Aney said.

Arguments in the case will continue next week.

On November 30, 2018, the Maharashtra Legislature had passed a bill proposing 16 per cent reservation in education and government jobs for the Marathas, declared as socially and educationally backward class by the government.

Caste panchayat members booked for boycott of woman, kin

FIR

Seven members of a caste panchayat in Maharashtra’s Jalna district have been booked for allegedly ordering the social boycott of a woman and her family in connection with a marital dispute.

Sonali Pandirkant Shivkar, a resident of Rajur in Bhokardan tehsil here, had filed a case against her husband, Dnayeshwar Anna Raje, and his family for allegedly torturing her for money, Inspector Pratap Singh of Rajur police station said on Friday.

The Vaid community panchayat, to which the couple belong, however decided to socially ostracise the Shivkar family as their daughter had gone to court against her husband’s family instead of solving the dispute at the panchayat, he added.

“After a meeting in Pune, the caste panchayat ordered the boycott of Sonali Shivkar and her family. They were even turned away from a marriage they had gone to attend in Ahmednagar on January 25. Following this, Shivkar filed a complaint. We have booked seven members of the caste panchayat,” the official said.

He said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Prohibition of People from Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act and further probe was underway.
