Coriander futures dip 0.02% on subdued demand

corianderCoriander prices fell 0.02 per cent to Rs 6,539 per quintal in futures market on Tuesday as participants reduced positions amid muted domestic as well as exports demand against ample stocks position. Besides, rising arrivals from major producing regions and profit-booking at higher levels weighed on the sentiment.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, coriander prices for delivery in April declined by Rs 13, or 0.02 per cent, to Rs 6,539 per quintal with an open interest of 29,450 lots. On similar lines, rates for delivery in May was trading lower by Rs 27, or 0.41 per cent, at Rs 6,595. The open interest of the contract stood at 3,330 lots.

Analysts attributed the fall in coriander futures to subdued demand in the physical market against adequate stocks position on increased supplies from producing regions.

Independent institutions have lost their prestige: Sena

udhav thackreyAmidst the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Save the Constitution’ dharna, which began on Sunday, over the unprecedented face-off with the Centre over CBI versus state police issue, Shiv Sena on Tuesday launched another attack on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government saying that with the Centre taking control of various institutions in the county, the courts, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the NITI Aayog and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have all lost their prestige in the past few years.

“The political war happening in West Bengal is a sign of new anarchy… Courts, Reserve Bank of India, NITI Aayog and CBI have all lost their prestige in the past few years. The plight of these institutions has become similar to that of a caged parrot. How can you trust them? CBI has been half dead since last few years,” reads the latest piece in Hindi in Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

Banerjee started her sit-in protest on Sunday after the CBI attempted to arrest Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in connection with the Saradha chit fund case, which was foiled by the state police.

“Why did the clash between Kolkata CBI and the West Bengal government start immediately after the central investigation agency appointed its new director? The 2019 Lok Sabha election play a big role in this. The BJP is not expected to get the same victory like 2014. Around 100 seats will get less from North till Maharashtra. To fulfil the gap of these 100 seats, BJP is looking forward to states like West Bengal. They are aiming to get 10-15 seats from West Bengal. This is why the politics of Rath Yatra took place in the state,” the Shiv Sena said

“They (BJP) say that Mamata Banerjee is against Goddess Durga and people should vote for BJP Hindu in the state. This strategy is fine, but why didn’t they make the Ram temple in Ayodhya even after taking out Rath Yatra there? Why didn’t the CBI officials have a warrant with them? They could have also done it two months ago. Narendra Modi should look at the situation as the Prime Minister,” the article in the Sena mouthpiece said.

The CBI, which suspects Kumar of having “destroyed” evidence in the chit fund scam, on Monday moved the Supreme Court to seek direction on how to act against Kumar, a senior IPS officer. The Supreme Court’s directed that no coercive steps, including arrest of Kolkata Police Chief Rajeev Kumar, will take place during the course of investigation. The SC also directed Kumar to make himself available before the CBI and “faithfully” cooperate with the agency in investigation of cases arising out of the Saradha chit fund scam probe.

Activist Teltumbde won’t be arrested till Feb 12: Pune Police to HC

TELTUMBDEjpg

Pune Police told the Bombay High Court on Tuesday that it will not arrest activist Anand Teltumbde till February 12 midnight. The statement was made by state’s counsel Aruna Pai, representing Pune Police, before a bench of Justice N W Sambre. However, the court directed Pai to give an undertaking as a pre-condition for securing time to file an affidavit opposing Teltumbde’s plea seeking protection from arrest in the Elgar Parishad-Koregaon Bhima case.

Teltumbde is an accused in the case, which was filed following violent clashes at Koregaon-Bhima village near Pune on January 1, 2018. He was booked on several charges, including sections under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The Dalit scholar, who was arrested last week and released following a court order, approached the high court seeking protection from arrest. He filed an anticipatory bail application through his counsel Mihir Desai, arguing that he had had no role to play in the case.

Advocate Pai, however, urged Justice Sambre to dismiss Teltumbde’s application on the ground that UAPA Section 43D(4) bars granting anticipatory bail to an accused. She also pointed out that earlier last year, Teltumbde, who the police claim has Maoist links, filed another plea in the high court denying all charges against him and urged the court to quash the FIR against him in the case. However, another bench rejected the plea.

Pai said that the HC bench rejected the plea after analysing all evidence against him. That, too, should be a valid ground to dismiss the anticipatory bail application whereas Desai said that the law provided for anticipatory bail even under UAPA in “exceptional cases”. Pai, however, asked the court to grant her time to put her arguments on an affidavit and Justice Sambre granted her time to February 9 to file the affidavit after she assured the court that Teltumbde would not be arrested till February 12, considering that the Supreme Court had granted the activist time till February 11 to exhaust all his legal remedies seeking protection from arrest.

Teltumbde was arrested from the Mumbai airport last Saturday around 3 am. His arrest was deemed illegal by a sessions court and he was released from custody. Teltumbde was booked following an Elgar Parishad event on December 31, 2017, which, the police alleged, triggered violent clashes the next day at Koregaon-Bhima village in Pune district.

According to police, the event was funded and supported by Maoists. At the event, some activists made inflammatory speeches and provocative statements that contributed to the January 1 violence. However, several activists were named in the FIR which include Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj, P Varavara Rao and Gautam Navlakha, were initially put under house arrest on the directions of the Supreme Court. All of them, except Navlakha, were recently re-arrested and taken into custody by police. However, in Octoober last year, Pune Police registered another FIR, naming eight more activists, including Teltumbde and Stan Swamy.

BJP calls SC order ‘victory of democracy’, demands Mamata’s resignation

kailash vijayvargiyaWhile West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is on a sit-in against the CBI’s attempt to question the Kolkata Police Chief in connection with chit fund scams, called the Supreme Court decision a ‘moral victory’, BJP National General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya on Tuesday thanked the Supreme Court for ordering no arrest of Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and directing him to appear before the CBI, saying it was a “victory of democracy” and demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The apex court on Tuesday directed Kumar to make himself available before the CBI and “faithfully” cooperate with the agency in investigation of cases arising out of the Saradha chit fund scam probe.

“The SC verdict is a victory of democracy. Mamata Banerjee should immediately tender resignation,” Vijayvergiya told agencies.

The apex court also said that no coercive steps, including the arrest of the Kolkata Police chief, will take place during the course of investigation.

The state government and the state police have repeatedly created hurdles during the investigation, he alleged.

A CBI team had gone to Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar’s residence in the city on Sunday to question him in connection with the multi-crore chit fund scams, but was denied permission, bundled into jeeps and whisked away to police station.

The Trinamool Congress supremo has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah of trying to plot a “coup” in the state and alleged that National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is directing the CBI to “harass” political opponents on the orders of the PM.

“Mamata Banerjee is on dharna to stop CBI from questioning a police officer. The people of this country would have loved to see Banerjee holding dharna to return the money of chit fund investors,” Vijayvargiya said.

Kamal Haasan calls union budget “self-serving”, says it failed to address critical issues of TN

Describing the union budget 2019-20 as ‘self-serving,’ Actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Tuesday said it sounded in parts “like the legitimate version of money for votes.”

The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president said that the promises made to farmers “might look impressive” but that it would amount to a “paltry sum,” when broken down to per diem.

Union Finance Minister Piyush Goyal had presented the NDA government’s interim budget last Friday.

“Economic experts will easily be able to pick holes in this budget. But what is obvious even to the common man is that this budget sounds in some parts like the legitimate version of money for votes,” Haasan said on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Without referring to any particular announcement, he said “all the promises in this interim budget made to the middle class and the farmers might look impressive prima facie but if broken down to per diem/day allowance, it would amount to a paltry sum.”

Among others, Goyal had announced that farmers would be provided Rs 6,000 per year in three instalments under a scheme to be fully funded by the central government.

Apparently referring to the BJP as “the party in power,” he said, while it may reap the benefits of this dole, what if the people choose another party in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

Why would the new dispensation continue with these budgetary proposals “which they are already critical of?” he asked.

“The bottom line is that it is a very self-serving budget by the Government. And more importantly, the budget doesn’t address any of the critical issues that affect the people of Tamil Nadu,” Haasan added.

Rail accidents – Let us stop blame game & focus on safety measures

Train Accident 1The recent train derail incident in Bihar killing six passengers and several injured reveals the fact that the increasing number of train accidents is alarming and is also a symptom of the rot within. These are needless deaths, which happen only in India which is really disgusting. In order to prevent the recurrence of such mishaps, the modernisation of safety equipment, the maintenance of track and signals, the re-training and fitness of the staff, especially drivers, their assistants, guards, and those at the stations need to be improved. On the one hand, safety measures are out of place and, on the other, safety awareness is abysmally low among people. How many of us know what to do in cases of emergency? Our Railway Minister needs efficient, adequate and trained staff too, for turning the vision into reality. As evident due to trains derailment and accidents, our country faced a lot of loss the precious lives of passengers, private & public property as well as caused fear in the minds of commuters to refrain from using rail journeys to reach their destination.

It is a fact that railway traffic has grown disproportionately to railway infrastructure, particularly railroads and routes. There are serious flaws in the scheduling of trains on some routes. So much so that the Railway system would not be able to handle the traffic on certain routes if all trains were to run as per schedule. Every year we introduce new trains without improving the infrastructure. While a probe has been ordered, and compensations announced, the history of Indian Railways is not very bright when it comes to safety.

Successive governments have ignored warnings given by expert committees and engineers of the Indian Railways on track safety and maintenance.

It has become a routine for the Railway Ministers and officials to rush to the scene of an accident, express their sorrow and opinion for its cause, announce ex-gratia payments to the victims’ families and initiate an inquiry, and there ends the matter. It is clear that the phenomenal advance in modern technology has not led to the upgradation of safety to the desired extent.

In addition to use of new technology for improvement, great need is to felt to look after the manpower behind the rail in terms of providing better facilities in incentives, promotions, training, healthcare, accommodation and proper rests to shift workers and imparting yoga & meditation for their well-being and also devise mechanisms to comfort their families, which play pivotal role to bring mission of Railway Minister’s dream and mission comes true.

But safety hardly seems to improve. Has any action taken on various inquiries instituted by railways in the past after accidents? No! Successive governments have ignored warnings given by expert committees and engineers of the Indian Railways on track safety and maintenance. Every time a major train accident occurs, we get down to a postmortem on the reasons that caused the accident.  Every time a serious accident occurs, the Railway Ministry announces a probe. While chanting the development mantra, the Railways should take care not to compromise safety. The Railways should allocate sufficient funds for passenger safety and learn from other countries, if necessary. Let us stop the blame game and focus on safety measures so that these accidents can be avoided in the future. It is only the common man who has to pay the price for all this with his life. It is time for a systemic overhaul, including safety measures, on a war footing. The Indian Railways needs to launch ‘Zero Accident Mission’ in a definite time frame.

FEATURE LETTER DIARY 679x400 e1545637164261

A matter of great concern

It is the matter of great concern that the autonomy of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seems to be under the threat. For a couple of months, the CBI’s matter is not coming at a conclusion as every alternative day rises with a new case that shakes the nation from within. In earlier, CBI was a hot topic to be discussed for its former director Alok Kumar Verma and deputy director Rakesh Asthana’s dispute and now once again it is in the headlines because of the Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar. These cases are threatening our democratic face. I request the Apex Court to handle the matter and direct to repay the premier agency of the country its credibility and autonomy. I also request the SC to put some stick measures in place for the government so that it could not interfere in independent agencies of the country.

Didi is doing a selfless task

Nowadays, encircled in the news clip is, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who escalated her street fight against the Centre and the CBI by vowing to continue her “Satyagraha” to save the country and its Constitution till February 8. It is a reality that Mamata Banerjee’s anti-Centre protest evoked a tsunami all over the country and she gained the support from almost 22 Opposition parties. It will be not wrong to say that Banerjee is fuelling her prime ministerial ambition as she tactically pitched herself to the forefront of a united Opposition whose leaders tore into the Central government on the floor of Parliament and outside. I hope for the best that her protest will make the country free from all anti-democratic elements.

Time in India should be shifted to GMT+6 Hours Time-Zone

India should also advance its time-zone by half an hour to make it GMT+6 hours rather than present haphazard GMT+5.30 hours as also recommended by National Institute of Advanced Studies. Since presently just eight countries in the world deviate from separating their time-zones by a fraction of an hour, the Indian government should approach international authorities so that time-zone for a country may compulsorily be deviated by full one hour from GMT. Making Indian Time at GMT+6 hours will fulfill long-pending and genuine demand of people from north-east India without going for dual and impractical time-zone for the country. Suggested change will reduce big time-difference of 127 minutes between extreme east and west zones of the country. The demand of north-eastern states is highly justified for better utilisation of day-time energy when sun-rise and sun-set are comparatively much earlier there than rest of the country.

India should also take lead in taking up the matter of metric-measure of time with concerned international authorities. When all other measures are converted in metric-system from earlier haphazard systems, metric-measure of time has not yet been introduced. A metric unit of time should be introduced with a complete day divided into 10 metric hours instead of present 24 hours. Each metric hour may have 100 metric minutes with a metric minute having 100 metric seconds thereby making a complete day of 100000 metric seconds instead of present 86400 seconds.

No arrest for Kolkata Police Chief, Mamata calls SC order a moral victory

(TOP STORY, WEST BENGAL)

The Supreme Court’s direction that no coercive steps, including arrest of Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar, will take place during the course of investigation is “our moral victory”, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said Tuesday.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed Kumar to make himself available before the CBI and “faithfully” cooperate with the agency in investigation of cases arising out of the Saradha chit fund scam probe. The court also said no coercive steps, including the arrest of the Kolkata Police chief, will take place during the course of investigation.

Banerjee is on a sit-in against the CBI’s attempt to question the Kolkata Police chief in connection with chit fund scams. Her protest entered the third day on Tuesday.

“The Supreme Court’s order is a victory of the common man, democracy and the Constitution. There must be some story behind this. Nobody can dare to speak against (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) Modi. Our’s is a mass agitation and we are going to fight it unitedly,” Banerjee told reporters at the dharna venue in central Kolkata.

Banerjee sat on a “Save India” dharna in front of Metro Cinema in the heart of Kolkata on Sunday night insisting that the latest CBI action was tantamount to stifling the spirit of “Constitution and federalism” in the country.

“We always respect the law and feel that things should run as per the law. But, if someone tries to destroy the pillars on which democracy stands, then there would be nothing left of the democratic process that we are so proud of. We really welcome the [Supreme Court] verdict. It is absolutely correct. Our case is very strong. We never said we will not cooperate. This is political vendetta,” Banerjee said.

Several opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, DMK’s Kanimozhi, RJD’s Tejaswhi Yadav, have supported Banerjee’s protest.

Trinamool protests disrupt LS proceedings over CBI ; House adjourns till 2 PM

8120e5160c16ffc47a1238430c124011

Lok Sabha proceedings were disrupted again on Tuesday as belligerent Trinamool Congress members engaged in sloganeering against the government over the standoff between the CBI and the Kolkata Police. The House was adjourned till 2 PM even as papers were laid and members raised various issues during the Zero Hour, which went on till around 12.30 PM.

Earlier, the Question Hour was washed out and the proceedings were adjourned till noon. Soon after the Zero Hour commenced, members from the Trinamool Congress trooped into the Well shouting slogans against the CBI and the government.

The incident involving the CBI and the Kolkata Police in Kolkata on Sunday has escalated into a bitter political slugfest between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP. Various Opposition parties have also come in support of West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who is sitting on a dharna. Members from the TDP, SP and the Congress were also in the Well. Some members displayed placards and sought to raise the issue of alleged corruption in the Rafale deal.

“You do not have faith in CBI. You do not have faith in Supreme Court … this is not done…the case is being heard by the SC. Let Parliament do its function. Let all institutions perform their (respective) roles,” a peeved Speaker Sumitra Mahajan told the protesting the Trinamool Congress members before she adjourned the House till noon.

Interestingly, when TMC members were shouting slogans during the Question Hour, their fellow member and former Union minister Dinesh Trivedi was asking a supplementary question on agriculture. On Monday too, TMC members had disrupted proceedings over the CBI issue.
