simmba

Ranveer Singh Wednesday said his actor wife Deepika Padukone is proud of his work in soon-to-be-released “Simmba”.

Ranveer has collaborated with director Rohit Shetty for a film for the first time while the director has worked with Deepika already in Chennai Express.

“The film is truly a big screen experience. We both watched the film together. Deepika showered praise on Rohit sir, I was waiting for her to talk about me. She is very proud of me and Rohit sir,” Ranveer told reporters here at a promotional event of “Simmba” Wednesday evening.

Shetty added, “Deepika was very thrilled and happy with the film.”

The director said it is hard to predict the box office outcome of a film but he has tried to make a good film.

“It is the audience who decides whether they want to watch a film or not based on the trailer or promo. Awareness is definitely created through the songs. On Friday, we will get to know about the fate of the film.”

Rohit defines “Simmba” as his first women-oriented action film.

“The film makes you happy and cry. I am not saying it is Mughal-e-Azam. But it does give you a high. You will clap, cry and you will get that emotional jolt.”

Sara, who recently attended the special screening of “Simmba” with her mother and brother, is more confident about the film.

“My mom and brother came to see the film and they both are different people, but they both laughed, cried and enjoyed the film. I am very excited and it is going to be killer. I have seen the film and I am sure the film is going to get good response.”

Actor Sonu Sood, who plays the antagonist in the film, says he was very excited about working in the film.

“When you work with Rohit Shetty you get charged as an actor. It was an entertaining experience while shooting. I can vouch this is going to be a very entertaining film,” Sonu said.

salman khan birthday53 d

Salman Khan, who turned 53 on Thursday, said love and respect of the audience is more precious to him than his stardom.

The “Tiger Zinda Hai” star was speaking to the media ahead of his birthday celebrations.

“I am happy that people love me so much. Stardom matters in a way but what makes me more happy is the love and respect of people and that they trust me a lot. This all means a lot to me,” said Salman.

The actor rang in his birthday with family and close friends at his Panvel farmhouse.

Salman’s only release this year, “Race 3” was mocked by critics and the film also did not do expected business at the box office.

The superstar said he will continue to keep working hard and do good work for his fans.

Celebrities such as Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha, Sunil Grover, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anil Kapoor, Mouni Roy, Ameesha Patel, Sooraj Pancholi, Dino Morea, Jimmy Shergill, Mahesh Manjrekar, Satish Kaushik, Bobby Deol, Amrita Arora; directors Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Anees Bazmee; producer Ramesh Taurani and music composer duo Sajid-Wajid were also present.

Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth dance to ‘Uptown Funk’ after their wedding

mileySeems like Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth can’t contain their happiness as the couple looked all elated, showing off some killer dance moves after getting hitched.

The 26-year-old singer shared a video on her Twitter handle of her dancing to Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s song ‘Uptown Funk’ and singing along in an elegant white Vivienne Westwood dress. She flipped her hair and coordinated her funky moves to the lyrics of the song perfectly.

Towards the end of her video, she was joined by her hubby Hemsworth who made a cameo and grooved to the beats of the songs with his lady love.

Cyrus and Hemsworth tied the knot in a secret wedding at their home in Franklin, Tennessee on December 23.

Their home was looking beautiful with a mixture of wedding and Christmas decorations. One archway was covered in a colourful balloon canopy and a huge Christmas tree was also present in the backdrop. The tree was decorated with bright and colourful ornaments and lights.

The couple sparked some speculation on their wedding night and the next few days as some photos and videos surfaced from their special evening. Cyrus’ sister Noah Cyrus posted a photo of herself crying and balloons that spelled out “Mr & Mrs” in the background.

However, neither Cyrus nor Hemsworth confirmed the news until Wednesday when the ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer put up pictures on her Instagram account making it official.

The pictures shared by Cyrus featured the newlyweds hugging and adoring each other. “10 years later…” she captioned a cute snap. In another picture, they shared a kiss in what Cyrus called “probably our one – millionth kiss.”

For the wedding, the 28-year-old actor donned a cut black suit and black tie, giving his outfit a casual spin by wearing white Vans shoes.

The much-in-love couple first met on the sets of the movie ‘The Last Song’ in 2008. After dating on and off for many years, Hemsworth popped the big question for the second time in 2016.

Letters to the Editor: December 27, 2018

FEATURE LETTER DIARY 679x400 e1545637164261When tall promises fall flat!

Leaders make tall promises during elections, hoping that they can get away with some excuse or the other after they have got elected or the matter would end there if they lose.  It was precisely such promises that have landed the BJP in trouble at the Centre. After just a few months, the  upcoming election is about to be held, and the BJP has again started to make tall promises  in different ways to the people  and make pretence to get votes from the public just like the last election. The people, however, have become fully aware of its false promises and deceivableness. As citizens of India, we all are also responsible now that the ball in our court and everything is in our hands. So, we should think about this matter accordingly and select our leaders who will be perfect to provide leadership and governance.

Finally, it is my hearty request to the people that they never waste their valuable votes by voting the wrong party, and avoid selecting the deceiving leaders who just make tall promises and don’t fulfill it, and doesn’t care  about the new generation and their education and then only will our society be at peace. Otherwise, we will lose everything in our short lives.

Central govt. should punish hooligans

A group of 1984 anti -Sikh riot victims defaced the signboard of Rajiv Chowk on Dec 20, and a few days ago they behaved ineptly with his statue in Ludhiana. They demand that the ‘Bharat Ratna’ conferred to the former PM Rajiv Gandhi should be withdrawn. It is not fair that a person who has departed should be insulted or defaced. It’s sorrowful that the government is being deaf and blind. I hope the Central government takes severe steps against them and punish them strictly.

Discriminatory Judgement

The order by the Noida Police barring Muslims from performing Namaz at public places is discriminatory and irresponsible. It is a condemnable and partial judgement. BJP is only creating disputes between Hindus and Muslims by these statements. In fact, the BJP gives such statements to hide its failures and divert people’s attention. If the government has any policy that prohibits religious gathering at public places it should be implemented on followers of every religion.

Drugs being openly sold in Mumbai is a big concern!

Mumbai is heading the Punjab way as Nigerians have made the city the drug hub with cocaine, brown sugar and other forms of additive drugs openly being made available in the markets. The cops too have knowledge about the illegal trade but keeping mouth shut as they are bribed to look the other way round to facilitate the sale of these banned items. Drugs have not only ruined many youngster’s life in the city but the crime rate too has shot up as people in need of money to satisfy their addiction rob, steal and commit all sorts of crimes.

Government should not be a silent spectator and a special task force should be formed to end this drug menace. Nigerians and other foreigners staying illegally in the country should be deported to their countries immediately. Education too is the need of the hour and citizens should be made aware about the ill-effects of drugs. Drugging is a heinous crime and the law should be strict while dealing with it!

The gift of forgiveness

Christmas week is the special time of year we remember and celebrate the birth of our Saviour and Lord, Jesus Christ. It is a celebration of love, the great love God demonstrated for humanity by sending His one and only begotten son Jesus Christ to the earth. It’s also an opportunity to give gifts to the people in our lives. But what can you give to people this Christmas that will be a step beyond the physical gifts we usually go for? Apart from tangible gifts, you can also give people the gift of forgiveness – whether they deserve it or not.

Missing Nana Chudasama

Nana Chudasama – this name is well-known to Mumbaikars. Constantly in the limelight, he was the author of those catchy, popular and thought-stimulating banners which appear at Marine Drive which he had been writing for a record-breaking 30 years, a feat which deserves an entry in the Guinness Book of World Record. The banner, “Pen is mightier than sword…. Agitate, debate but don’t vandalise”— was a very simple yet very meaningful slap to those so-called self-declared custodians of Mumbai. Nana’s banners are not only thought-provoking but they force you to think and reason. Marine Drive banners embedded in satire, puns and humour and the voice of the common man. The banner speaks about the dreams and anguish of the common man; the words reveal feelings of most of the common people of this metropolis.

Farm Loan waiver will hit more NPAs – Part I

Farm Loan1

Our Indian agriculture is in dire need of mechanisation and modernisation to make it a self-sustaining commercial activity. It has become more of a compulsion for the farmers instead of a promising career opportunity. Drylands are the worst-hit by the agrarian crisis and deserve special treatment. It is common knowledge that farming is of little viability on small holdings in drylands. When nature rides roughshod over debt-ridden farmers in the form of erratic monsoon and crop failures, they face grim options. Indebtedness is a key reason for the many farmer suicides in the country. Loan waivers provide some relief to farmers in such situations, but there are debates about the long-term effectiveness of the measure. Farm loan waivers may act like an immediate relief for the financially distressed, debt-ridden farmers. But it’s not an optimal solution in the long run. Money is transferred from taxpayers to the borrowers. Waiving loans addict the farmers to the concept that repayment is not to be expected. It is just like giving alms to the able-bodied beggar and perpetuating begging habits. It is to be remembered that the loan waiver has not helped the farmers as it is a relief only for one season with the farmers going back to grind in the next. Giving such sop is also not economically viable as it reduces government’s fiscal power to intervene when needed the most.

SBI Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya once said that “such schemes disturb credit discipline and raise hopes for more waive by other states. In case of a (farm) loan waiver there is always a fall in credit discipline because the people who get the waiver have expectations of future waivers as well.” No doubt, banks might get benefit in the short run as their loan book gets lighter and they get purge of some non-performing assets. But such waivers and their anticipation in future would damage credit culture. A blanket waiver scheme is detrimental to the development of credit markets. The banks may become wary in providing loans to the poor farmers who actually need it. Such loan waivers will add to the NPAs of the banks and it will cost taxpayers.

When former PM Vajpayee was asked about loan waivers his response was like this “I don’t believe in such populist measures… This issue can be solved only by making agriculture lucrative “. So the state governments should start thinking in that direction to find a sustainable solution. Unfortunately, the loan waiver is an easy way for the politicians to impress the poor and this issue is going to persist for a long time ! Don’t we think, the governments – Centre and states – have repeatedly failed to break the cartelisation and their effort to create farm infrastructure through cold stores has helped the corporate sector more than the farmers ?

Pujara’s classy hundred puts India in command in third Test

pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara produced yet another classy hundred and stitched a 170-run stand with captain Virat Kohli (82) to put India in command against Australia on the second day of the third Test here Thursday.

Pujara hit his second century of the series, a dogged but faultless 106 off 319 balls, to ensure that India consolidated the good start of the first day Wednesday. It was though his slowest hundred in Test cricket yet.

Kohli, who contributed a significant 82 off 204 balls, made a surprising declaration and finished India’s first innings at 443 for 7.

Rohit Sharma ended on 63 not out off 114 balls, inclusive of five fours, while Pat Cummins was the pick of the Australian bowlers, taking 3/72 in a back-breaking effort of 34 overs.

At stumps, Australia were placed at 8 for no loss from 6 overs with openers Aaron Finch and Marcus Harris were both unbeaten on 3 and 5 respectively. India lead by 435 runs.

Post tea, it was a comedy of fielding errors from Australia as they missed three easy chances, all of Nathan Lyon (1/110) in what proved to be a frustrating 48 overs from him.

First, in the 147th over, substitute fielder Peter Siddle put down Rohit (on 15 then) at backward square leg as the batsman played a wild sweep. A ball later, Ajinkya Rahane (34) was lucky when on 32 as Travis Head was caught napping at short leg when the ball sailed past him.

Rahane got unlucky shortly afterwards though as one delivery from Lyon kept too low and he was plumb LBW.

Rishabh Pant (39) played an uncharacteristic defensive innings, and the only aerial stroke he played was in the 159th over off Lyon when Cummins spilled the chance at long on. He was on 15 then.

Australia took the third new ball in the 167th over and it worked as Pant looped up a catch to Usman Khawaja behind the wickets off Mitchell Starc (2/87).

The accelerating burst before the declaration never came as skipper Kohli called the batsmen in when Ravindra Jadeja (4) was caught behind off Josh Hazlewood (1/86).

Rahane and Rohit took India to 346/4 at tea after Australia removed both Pujara and Kohli in the space of four overs.

Post lunch, Kohli-Pujara took their third-wicket partnership to 170 runs before the game turned.

The Indian skipper took medication for some back issue and then stepped through the gears as he brought out two pulls against Mitchell Starc (1/68) in the 123rd over. He pressed on the accelerator a tad too much, and cut straight to third man, much to the bowler’s delight.

Four overs later, in the 126th, Pujara got a delivery from Cummins that kept a tad low and knocked back his stumps as India were suddenly reduced to 299-4.

Rahane then took charge of proceedings and played a breezy knock, not allowing the Australian attack to get on top.

In comparison, Rohit was more sedate and took his time at the crease, even as Tim Paine targeted him with some banter. There was not any major change in the pace of scoring though, with 36 runs coming in the first hour after lunch, and 33 runs in the second.

In the morning session, Pujara scored his 17th hundred as India reached 277/2 at lunch.

Starting from overnight 215/2, India looked ready for another hard day’s grind, with Kohli reaching his 20th Test half-century, off 110 balls, in the very first over of the day.

The two batsmen scored quickly in the first hour and kept the scorecard ticking over, before Australia went back to their tactic of cutting runs.

Cummins bowled another wonderful spell, extracting most out of the pitch than any other Australian bowler, and he beat the edges of both batsmen on a couple occasions but without any luck.

Lyon bowled with a predominantly leg-side field and into the batsmen. His duel with Pujara was quite remarkable, as the batsman kept turning him to the onside again and again, whilst stepping out on occasion to play him through the offside.

Australia kept a tight leash on the scoring rate as 62 runs came in this morning session. Even so, they could not deny Pujara who reached his second hundred of this series off 280 balls just prior to lunch.

In doing so, he went past his previous best tally of runs scored in an overseas Test series. He had scored 309 runs in Sri Lanka in 2017, and currently has 325 runs in the current series.

On day one, Mayank Agarwal scored his maiden Test half-century after India won the toss and opted to bat.

The four-match series is pegged at 1-1, after India won the first Test in Adelaide by 31 runs and Australia took the second Test in Perth by 146 runs.

India eyes $100-bn FDI in next two years; Plans industrial clusters for some countries: Prabhu

prabhu

India will aim to receive $100 billion in foreign direct investments in the next two years and special industrial clusters are being created for countries like Japan, South Korea, China and Russia where their companies can invest and operate, Union Minister Suresh Prabhu said.

The commerce and industry Minister said that his ministry has also identified sectors and countries which holds huge potential for investments in India.

“I have given a target. $100 billion of FDI should come from different sectors into India. It will not happen in one year. We have identified companies, sectors and countries and now we are going for road shows to attract investors,” Prabhu told agencies in an interview.

He said that India would remain a top destination for foreign investors in 2019 and the ministry would look at all sectoral issues that may come come in the way to attracting overseas investments.

“For countries like Japan, South Korea, China and Russia, we are creating industrial clusters where they can invest and operate,” Prabhu said.

The minister said China has agreed to set up industrial parks in India and the Chinese authorities have been asked to give a list of companies that are willing to set up factories in India.

Similarly, India would be happy to welcome firms from Europe and the US who want to move out of other countries and set up manufacturing bases in India, Prabhu said.

“We will be very happy to give them special status in India,” he added.

The comments follow several steps taken during 2018 to further liberalise norms and improve business climate in India to attract greater FDI.

In the World bank’s doing business report, India’s rank has improved to 77th from 130th earlier.

Earlier this year in January, the government permitted foreign airlines to invest up to 49 per cent in debt-ridden Air India, and eased norms for investment in single brand retail, construction and power exchanges.

Norms were also relaxed for medical devices and audit firms associated with companies receiving overseas funds.

The government permitted 100 per cent FDI under the automatic route for single brand retail trading and also in power exchanges that provide an online platform for trading in electricity.

This was the second major liberalisation in FDI policy by the NDA government after major changes effected in June 2016.

Total FDI in India, including re-invested earnings, rose to $61.96 billion in 2017-18, from $60.22 billion in 2016-17.

In April-June period of the current fiscal 2018-19, the country has attracted $16.86 billion of foreign investments.

Experts, however, said that the government needs to focus on areas like infrastructure modernisation and easing of procedures to attract global investors.

“Globally also, FDI inflows have cooled down. India needs to take steps in areas like infrastructure and procedural easing to further attract investments,” Professor Biswajit Dhar of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) said.

India mainly attracts investments from countries like Mauritius, Singapore, Japan, UK, the Netherlands, the US, Germany, Cyprus, France, and UAE.

The sectors that received maximum FDI during 2018 include services, computer hardware and software, construction development, trading, automobile, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and power.

To attract overseas companies, several states such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are also organising investors’ meet for their respective states.

The commerce and industry Ministry has also started ranking of states on their ease of doing business. In the last report, Andhra Pradesh topped the chart among all the states and union territories.

The Ministry has now decided to help the states undertake a similar exercise for their respective districts.

Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day without transacting business

RAJYA SABHA INDIA PARLIAMENT WINTER SESSION

The Rajya Sabha was on Thursday adjourned for the day without transacting any business after ruckus in the House over issues ranging from construction of a dam on the Cauvery River to violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district.

While slogan shouting members of Tamil parties — AIADMK and DMK trooped — into the well of the House over construction of Mekadatu Dam on Cauvery River, Samajwadi Party and BSP members raised the issue of mob violence in Bulandshahr that left two dead, including an inspector rank police officer.

A couple of members from Andhra Pradesh too were in the well of the House demanding special status for the state.

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said that nothing that the protesting members were saying would go on record and then adjourned the proceedings for the day.

“As nobody seems to be interested I have no option but to adjourn the House for the day,” he said before adjourning the proceedings till Friday.

The trouble started soon after the House mourned the death of its former members N Rajangam and Jai Narain Prasad Nishad and listed papers were presented to the House.

Members of Tamil parties shouted slogans from the well of the House seeking justice for the state over the Cauvery issue while SP and BSP members stood in their places raising the issue of Bulandshahr violence.

TMC leader Derek O’Brien too was up on his feet trying to a raise an issue but could not be heard in the din.

Thursday was the first sitting of the House after the four-day Christmas break.

Lok Sabha adjourned amid protests over Rafale deal, other issues

Lok Sabha, Rafale deal, Sumitra, Sumitra Mahajan, KhargeLok Sabha proceedings were again disrupted on Thursday as vociferous protests and sloganeering over various issues forced Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to adjourn the House till noon.

Despite repeated warnings from Mahajan, Congress, AIADMK and TDP members continued to stand in the Well of the House and sought to raise various issues, including Rafale deal.

Soon after the Question Hour began, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge wanted to raise the issue of Rafale deal but Mahajan said the matter can be raised during the Zero Hour.

Besides Congress members who were demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the deal, those from AIADMK protested against the construction of a dam across Cauvery River. TDP members sought to raise issues related to Andhra Pradesh.

As more than 30 members from the three parties continued to shout slogans and displayed placards while standing in the Well, Mahajan’s repeated requests asking them to go back to their seats did not yield any result.

“I am warning you. Go back to your seats… I will be naming you,” a visibly peeved Mahajan told protesting members.

“I want justice for all…,” the Speaker said as she wanted the proceedings to continue.

Kharge said the government should be directed to constitute a JPC to look into the Rafale deal.

One question was taken up during the Question Hour, which went on for around 15 minutes.

As the din continued, Mahajan adjourned the House till noon.

Arun Gawli shocked with Dayanand Salian’s arrest

LEADDayanand Salian alias Pujari, a member of the Arun Gawli gang, who was missing after getting bail in the murder case of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s brother-in-law Ismail Parkar 22 years ago, was arrested by the Unit-7 of Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch after a trap was laid for him at Kanjurmarg in eastern suburbs. Now that Pujari has been arrested and if he testifies against Gawli, as in the capacity that his statement points out the involvement of Gawli in the murder of Ismail Parker, many political Pandits suspect that this arrest might be a well-planned agenda against Arun Gawli’s political plan during 2019.

Unit-7 police told media that Pujari was arrested in 1993 and got bail in 1996. He then fled the city and went to Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, where he had been working as a cook in dhabas and restaurants under a fake name. He was apprehended on his way to meet his parents with whom he hadn’t been in contact since absconding. Crime Branch police official on the condition of anonymity told AV, “The gangster was arrested on the tip of a D-Company gang that is active in UP. Otherwise, this arrest wouldn’t have been possible. There are speculations that this surprising arrest ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections, may be to weaken Arun Gawli’s stand during 2019 elections.”

Pujari was wanted in serious crimes like murder and attempt to murder carried out at the behest of the Gawli gang. He was arrested by the Nagpada police in connection with the 1991 murder of Ismail Parkar, Ibrahim’s brother-in-law. Ismail Parkar was the husband of Haseena Parkar – Ibrahim’s sister, who recently died of heart attack. Gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli is under life imprisonment in the murder case of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar and has been serving the sentence since August 31, 2012. His party, Akhil Bharatiya Sena (ABS), meanwhile, holds on to a corporation seat for three terms while losing another in 2017 elections after two terms with the defeat of Vandana Gawli, his sister-in-law.

Arun Gawli’s long absence of eight years has already curbed the prospect of growth of the party. However, his daughter and ABS corporator Geeta Gawli, has managed to acquire the post of the Chairman of the Civic Health Committee and also a membership of the Civic Standing Committee. Facing competition from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen, ABS is still trying to hold on to its stronghold in Central Mumbai. Speaking about the arrest of Dayanand Pujari, Geeta Gawli told AV, “The arrest of Dayanand Pujari has nothing to do with Arun Gawli. This would not affect our party or Gawli’s political career. Hence, there should not be any controversy made over it.”

In the last elections held in 2017, the ABS led by Geeta Gawli chose to support the BJP and won a single seat in the election, that of corporator Geeta Gawli herself, even after launching candidates in around 24 constituencies. Though Geeta Gawli claimed later, had the Shiv Sena supported her earlier, the chances of winning seats would have been more. With the upcoming elections, the support of ABS might be crucial for any party to win, as the rise of Arun Gawli the politician can be alluded to the his native roots, which had earned him a popularity in the Marathi community as he won his membership to the Legislative Assembly in 2004. With his Robin Hood-like image, Gawli and ABS might still make a comeback. In such circumstances, the arrest of Pujari holds lots of political significance. With the arrest of Pujari, the murder case of Ismail Parker can be re-opened and if Pujari becomes an approver and stands against Gawli, it is going to be tough for the Don-turned-politician to make a comeback, as Criminal Lawyer and Political Analyst Pankaj Jadhav points out, “Arun Gawli has already been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Corporator Jamshandekar case, now if Pujari gives his statement stating Gawli’s involvement in Ibrahim Parker’s murder, then Gawli will face trouble in the court trials and probably, if we look into the political scenario, this arrest may have been made at this time to create obstacles in Gawli’s political plans for 2019.”

As such speculations are doing rounds, MNS leader Prakash Pawar thinks these cannot affect the erstwhile underworld’s “Daddy’s” political repute. In a conversation with AV, Prakash Pawar says, “Since Dayanand Pujari has been arrested after so many years, there would hardly be any connection between him and Arun Gawli. The gang wars have been a thing of the past. Many things have changed. I don’t think any of his statements will have any impact on Arun Gawli’s political career. But since the elections are nearby, Arun Gawli might face a bit of problem since the people who want to make political gains from such topics in times of election will try to do so.”

Nonetheless, only time can say about Gawli’s stand in the upcoming elections which majorly depends on the statement of Pujari.
