IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack 2

The recent web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack has sparked controversy, particularly regarding its portrayal of the hijackers involved in the real-life 1999 incident. In response to the criticism, Netflix India updated the series’ opening disclaimer to include both the real names and code names of the hijackers. While the series has been praised by critics and features a stellar cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, and Arvind Swamy, it has faced backlash from right-wing groups and sections of social media.

The controversy stems from the series’ decision to refer to the hijackers by seemingly generic names like Bhola, Shankar, Doctor, Burger, and Chief. This has led to accusations of “whitewashing,” as in reality, the hijackers were Muslim terrorists from Pakistan. Many critics argue that using codenames instead of explicitly identifying them as Muslims distorts historical truth. Some social media users have even called for a boycott of the show, claiming it intentionally downplays the religious and national identities of the terrorists involved. While the series is fictionalized, the decision to present the terrorists with ambiguous names has been seen as problematic by some, who believe it undermines the gravity of the event and misleads viewers.

In response to the backlash, Netflix agreed to update the series’ disclaimer to include the real names of the hijackers. This decision followed a meeting between Netflix representatives and officials from the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry, after concerns were raised about the alleged misrepresentation of facts in the series. Critics had expressed frustration, accusing the show of distorting historical events. The I&B Ministry’s involvement reflects the seriousness of the concerns, as many argued that the series downplayed the religious and national backgrounds of the terrorists involved in the 1999 Kandahar hijacking, a highly sensitive event in India’s recent history.

By updating the disclaimer, Netflix aimed to address these concerns and provide more clarity about the real individuals involved, while maintaining the creative elements of the series. However, the controversy underscores the ongoing tension between creative freedom in entertainment and the portrayal of historically significant events in a way that satisfies all sections of society.

On December 24, 1999, Indian Airlines Flight IC 814, a regularly scheduled passenger flight, was hijacked while en route from Kathmandu, Nepal, to New Delhi, India. The aircraft had 190 people on board, including 179 passengers and 11 crew members. The crew consisted of Captain Devi Sharan, First Officer Rajinder Kumar, and Flight Engineer Anil Kumar Jaggia.

Among the passengers were foreign nationals, one of the most notable being Roberto Giori, the then-owner of De La Rue Giori, a major player in the global currency-printing business at the time. The presence of such a high-profile figure added an extra layer of international concern to the already tense hijacking situation.

The hijacking, carried out by five armed terrorists, led to a week-long standoff, with the plane being diverted to multiple locations before eventually landing in Kandahar, Afghanistan. This incident became one of the most significant and traumatic events in India’s aviation history, drawing worldwide attention and leading to intense negotiations between the Indian government and the hijackers.

The flight carried five members of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) among the passengers. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the five perpetrators were later identified as Pakistani nationals: Ibrahim Athar (from Bahawalpur), Shahid Akhtar Sayeed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor Mistry (all from Karachi), and Shakir (from Sukkur). The hijackers used the code names Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola, and Shankar, respectively, to refer to themselves.

At the time of the incident, Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was traveling. He was only briefed about the hijacking after landing in Delhi, at which point he called an urgent meeting to address the crisis. This delay in communication and the mobilization of key agencies has since been criticized, as it may have contributed to the challenges in managing the situation effectively.

Inside the aircraft, passengers later recounted the terrifying experience. The hijackers ordered the crew to remove the food that had been served, separating male passengers from women and children. They blindfolded the men and threatened them with explosives, creating an atmosphere of fear and panic. The hijackers made it clear that any resistance or lack of cooperation would lead to violent consequences, heightening the tension during the early stages of the hijacking.

Following the hijacking of Flight IC 814, Indian Airlines immediately suspended all flights to and from Kathmandu, Nepal, as a precautionary measure. The suspension lasted five months, with services only resuming on June 1, 2000, after Nepal assured India of enhanced security measures at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. Nepal agreed to install an additional X-ray machine for screening passengers and allowed Indian security personnel to conduct a final check of all passengers before boarding.

In response to growing concerns about aviation security, the responsibility for security at Indian airports was transferred to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in January 2000. This shift aimed to strengthen safeguards and prevent similar incidents in the future. The aircraft involved in the hijacking was eventually returned to Indian Airlines and continued to serve in the airline’s fleet for several more years. However, it was ultimately retired and scrapped in December 2013. This marked the end of the physical legacy of one of India’s most traumatic aviation events, though the memories of the incident continue to resonate. After nearly eight years of litigation, a special court in Patiala sentenced the three accused to life imprisonment on February 5, 2008.

Over 7.8 Million EPS Pensioners to Enjoy Unrestricted Pension Access from Any Bank, Anywhere Starting January 1, 2025 4

On Wednesday, the Central Government sanctioned the implementation of the Centralised Pension Payments System (CPPS), an initiative poised to benefit upwards of 7.8 million individuals enlisted in the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS), administered by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Labour and Employment, heralded a transformative era, affirming that EPS pensioners will be empowered to receive their pension from any banking institution, at any branch, across the expanse of India, commencing January 1, 2025.

The ministry further elucidated that pensioners would no longer be encumbered by the need to physically visit bank branches for verification processes at the onset of their pension. The pension will be promptly credited upon its release, thus enhancing convenience and accessibility.

Moreover, the EPFO anticipates a notable reduction in the costs associated with pension disbursement, owing to the transition to this novel system.

“The sanctioning of CPPS heralds a pivotal stride in the modernisation of the EPFO. By facilitating pensioners to draw their pensions from any bank, at any branch, across the country, this initiative surmounts long-standing challenges faced by pensioners and ensures a streamlined and efficacious disbursement framework,” remarked the minister.

In subsequent phases, the government plans to migrate towards the Aadhaar-based Payment System (ABPS).

The CPPS embodies a paradigm shift, instituting a nationwide, centralised infrastructure for pension disbursement through any banking institution, at any branch across India.

Leveraging cutting-edge IT and banking technologies, the CPPS is set to deliver a more efficient, seamless, and user-centric experience for pensioners.

This centralised system will also guarantee the disbursement of pensions nationwide without necessitating the transfer of Pension Payment Orders (PPOs) from one office to another, even if a pensioner relocates or switches their bank or branch.

This development is expected to offer substantial relief to pensioners who return to their hometowns post-retirement.

Last month, the Union Cabinet, under the stewardship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, endorsed the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) for government employees. This scheme is designed to provide a guaranteed minimum pension and family pension, benefiting approximately 2.3 million Central government employees.

Rahul Gandhi Confident of Congress-NC Alliance Victory in J&K Elections 6

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi declared on Wednesday that the Congress-NC alliance will form the next government in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking at an election rally in the Sangaldan area of Ramban district, Gandhi criticized the BJP for spreading hate and fear across the country. He assured the crowd that the Congress, in alliance with the National Conference (NC), would counter this divisive agenda with love, honor, and respect.

Campaigning for Congress candidate Vikar Rasool Wani in the Banihal constituency, Gandhi remarked, “This place is so beautiful that I don’t want to go to the second poll meeting. I want to spend a few days with you here.”

Gandhi accused the BJP and RSS of spreading violence, but promised that the Congress would overcome this with a message of unity. He emphasized that the battle is between two ideologies: one of fear, hate, and violence, and the other of love and unity. “We walked 4,000 km from Kanyakumari to Kashmir to spread this message,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that Modi’s demeanor has changed from confident to subdued. He stressed that statehood for J&K, taken away under BJP rule, would be restored under a Congress-NC government. “J&K is ruled by a king, but we will restore your statehood and your rights,” he assured the people.

The Congress and NC have formed a pre-poll alliance, with NC contesting 52 seats and Congress 31 out of J&K’s 90 Assembly seats. The alliance aims to pressure the BJP into restoring statehood to J&K and address the region’s high unemployment and other pressing issues.

Central Railway Dismantles 4 Colossal Billboards and Curtails the Dimensions of 14 Others 8

Following the tragic incident involving a billboard collapse in Ghatkopar, Central Railway has proactively dismantled 4 colossal hoardings and significantly curtailed the dimensions of 14 others, in adherence to the Supreme Court’s directive. In contrast, Western Railway has yet to disclose any corresponding actions, citing ambiguity in the requested information.

RTI Activist Anil Galgali sought clarity from Central Railway regarding the enforcement of the Supreme Court’s orders. In response, B Arun Kumar, the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Central Railway, provided a detailed account of the actions executed. Among the 18 hoardings listed, 4 have been permanently eradicated. These include hoardings at Sandhurst Road (3200 ft) and Chunabhatti (3200 ft), with one in Tilak Nagar (1598 ft). M/s Roshan Space had two hoardings removed, while M/s Pioneer and M/s Alakh had one each eliminated.

The hoardings subjected to dimensional reductions are located in Wadi Bandar, three in Byculla, five in Chunabhatti, three in Suman Nagar, and two in Tilak Nagar. The total of 14 hoardings reduced in size includes seven owned by Devangi Outdoor, two by M/s Roshan Space, two by M/s Zest Enterprise, and one each by M/s Wallop, M/s Kothari, and M/s Nucleseats.

Western Railway’s Ambiguity

When questioned about the implementation of the Supreme Court’s order, Saurabh Kumar, the Public Information Officer of Western Railway, refrained from providing specifics, attributing the lack of response to unclear inquiries.

Anil Galgali has voiced satisfaction with the measures undertaken by Central Railway, asserting that such proactive steps will help prevent future tragedies akin to the one that occurred in Ghatkopar.

ST Employees Accuse Gunaratna Sadavarte of Being a Puppet 10

Ahead of Ganeshotsav, the State Transport (ST) Employees Association has announced an indefinite strike. Since Monday, ST employees have begun a statewide protest, demanding that their salaries be equal to those of state government employees. The union is also calling for immediate action on various issues, including financial matters and privatization, before the Legislative Assembly’s code of conduct is imposed.

ST Workers’ Demands: The dissatisfaction among ST workers stems from unresolved financial and operational issues. A joint action committee, comprising various organizations within the ST Corporation, is pushing for:

  • Salaries equivalent to those of state government employees
  • Implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission
  • Resolution of discrepancies in previous salary increases
  • Payment of arrears for dearness allowance
  • Correction of errors in previous contracts
  • Revisions to disciplinary procedures and their application
  • Extension of the medical cashless scheme to all employees

Ganpati, one of Maharashtra’s most celebrated festivals, is particularly significant in the Konkan belt. MSRTC had planned to deploy 5,000 extra Ganpati special buses from September 3-7, serving routes from Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar. However, if the strike continues, passengers with bookings to travel for the festival may face significant difficulties.

The strike has notably impacted bus depots in Pune, Satara, Sangli, and Nashik, affecting overall bus and passenger movement. MSRTC, one of the largest public transport corporations in the country, operates approximately 15,000 buses and employs 90,000 people. With over 6 million passengers daily, MSRTC buses are considered a lifeline for Maharashtra. The State Transport Corporation’s state-level trade union executive held a meeting on August 14 and gave the state government until August 27 to accept the pending demands of the workers. Then, on August 28, the district-level executive of the workers staged demonstrations and warned that ST Corporation workers would go on strike from September 3. However, as the state government did not address the workers’ demands, it adversely affected the day-to-day operations of the ST Corporation. On Friday, traffic was disrupted in many places. As of 8 am today, 96 out of 251 ST stations across the state are completely closed. Traffic is partially running in 82 depots, while operations are running smoothly in 73 depots.

During the Maha Vikas Aghadi government’s tenure, opposition figures accused Gunaratna Sadavarte of being a puppet used to stir unrest in the state. Sadavarte, who claimed to represent the thousands of MSRTC employees on strike since November 2021, garnered significant attention after MSRTC workers protested outside NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s residence in Mumbai. Although Sadavarte was not at the protest, he was detained for questioning about his role in inciting the workers. Now, with a new government in place, ST bus workers continue to push for their rights. However, Sadavarte has changed his position, advising MSRTC employees to halt their protests and wait for their demands to be addressed. This shift has exposed Sadavarte’s double standards and raised questions about his true intentions. However, the advocate is increasingly alleged to be the one leading the strike at the behest of opposition parties in the state. On Friday, he is said to have made provocative statements leading to the protest getting out of hand. In 2018, the Maharashtra government granted reservation to the Maratha community under the ‘Social and Educational Backwardness (SEBC)’ category. However, Sadavarte argued in the Supreme Court that this reservation was unconstitutional and should not be upheld. On May 5, 2021, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court unanimously revoked the reservation granted to the Maratha community under the SEBC category.

In the meantime, MSRTC employees, numbering over 90,000, have been on strike since November 2021. On Friday afternoon, they held a dramatic protest outside ‘Silver Oak,’ the residence of NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Pedder Road. The protesters, including many women, accused the veteran leader of failing to support their cause. During the protest, demonstrators shouted slogans, and some even threw footwear at the residence in their frustration.

Gunaratna Sadavarte has been exposed for his apparent double standards and conflicting roles. While aligning himself with the ruling government, he accused opposition leaders Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray of instigating the State Transport (ST) bus strike. Sadavarte pointed out that these opposition figures allegedly promised to support those who create unrest. He further claimed that members of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (the opposition coalition) are gradually starting to take steps in this direction. Sadavarte emphasized that no one will receive any percentage of the spoils or benefits, implying that the opposition’s efforts to create unrest would be in vain.

Sadavarte also mentioned that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had been planning to announce the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission during the Dussehra Mela, a move that would benefit government employees. However, according to Sadavarte, certain organizations intervened and halted the agreement that could have led to the announcement. He emphasized that despite leading a group of 65,000 employees, the organizations led by MLAs Padalkar and Pavaskar did not participate in the strike. The key issue, according to Sadavarte, remains whether the employees of the MSRTC will ever receive justice, given the political infighting and stalled decisions. In essence, Sadavarte is portraying himself as a leader striving for employee welfare while accusing the opposition of creating unrest and obstructing progress for political gain.

Dombivali Man Scammed Out of Rs 4 Lakh in Fake Foreign Currency Exchange Scheme 14

In a recent incidence in Dombivali, Maharashtra’s Thane district., a 51-year-old wholesale medicine supplier fell victim to a sophisticated scam that cost him Rs 4 lakh. The con artist promised to exchange his money for foreign currency, only to disappear with his cash, leaving behind nothing but blank papers.

The victim, a resident of Dombivali, was approached by three individuals who claimed they could exchange his money for 700 dinars. The offer seemed legitimate, especially since it was made through an acquaintance. The scammers proposed to exchange Rs 12 lakh for the foreign currency, a deal that would have appeared highly lucrative to anyone unaware of the trap.

The Fraudulent Transaction: How the Scam Unfolded

On August 31, around noon, the victim met the trio at Nilje in Dombivli East. The scammers reiterated their offer to provide 700 dirhams in exchange for Rs 12 lakh. Trusting them, the victim handed over the first installment of Rs 4 lakh. The scammers then gave him a bag, allegedly containing the Dinars, and left the scene.

It was only after the scammers had left that the victim realized he had been duped. Upon opening the bag, he found it filled with blank papers instead of the promised foreign currency. In a state of shock, he attempted to contact the perpetrators, but all efforts proved futile. The harsh reality set in, leading him to file a complaint with the local police.

Legal Action and Investigation

Following the complaint, the Thane police registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the police are actively pursuing leads to track down the culprits.

Tragic Incident in Haryana: Class 12 Student Aryan Mishra Mistaken for Cattle Smuggler, Shot Dead by Vigilantes 16

In a heart-wrenching incident that has sparked outrage in Haryana’s Faridabad, a 19-year-old student, Aryan Mishra, was allegedly shot dead by a group of cow vigilantes who mistakenly identified him as a cattle smuggler. The tragic event occurred on the night of August 23, near Palwal, and has since led to the arrest of five men, who are currently in judicial custody.

Victim’s Identity and Incident Overview

Aryan Mishra, a Class 12 student enrolled in an open school in Faridabad, became an unintended victim of an aggressive chase by cow vigilantes. The incident unfolded when Aryan left his home late at night to join five friends in an SUV for a casual drive. According to the police, the vehicle in which Aryan and his friends were traveling became the target of a misguided vigilante operation led by Anil Kaushik, the head of an organization known as “Live for Nation,” which promotes cow protection.

The Night of the Incident: Misidentification and Fatal Chase

On the fateful night of August 23, Anil Kaushik, along with his associates Varun, Saurabh, Krishan, and Adesh, reportedly received information about suspected cattle smugglers in the area. The tip-off mentioned a Renault Duster, which closely resembled the SUV Aryan and his friends were in. Acting on this information, the group decided to intercept the vehicle, leading to a high-speed chase that ended in tragedy.

During the pursuit, shots were fired at the vehicle. Two of those bullets struck Aryan Mishra, fatally wounding him. Initially, Aryan’s family was unaware of the involvement of cow vigilantes, suspecting instead that the attack was related to some enmity involving one of Aryan’s friends.

Legal Proceedings: FIR and Arrests

Following the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of murder, rioting, and violations under the Arms Act. The police investigation quickly turned up crucial evidence, including CCTV footage, which confirmed the involvement of the cow vigilante group. As a result, the five accused men were arrested and placed in judicial custody.

Father’s Heartfelt Account: The Last Moments of Aryan Mishra

In a statement to the police, Aryan’s father, Siya Nand Mishra, recounted the harrowing moments that led to the discovery of his son’s death. He explained that Aryan had left home without the family’s knowledge to join his friends Harshit Gulati, Sujata Gulati, Shanky, Sagar Gulati, and Kirti Sharma in Harshit’s Renault Duster. At approximately 3:30 am, Harshit’s father arrived at their home, urgently requesting the family to go to Palwal. Although the reason was unclear at the time, Aryan’s brother Ajay quickly accompanied Harshit’s father on a Scooty towards Palwal.

Shortly after, Ajay returned home with grave news, urging his father to head to B K Hospital immediately. Upon arrival, they were instructed to proceed to SSB Hospital, where Aryan was being treated. It was there that Aryan’s father learned the devastating truth—his son had been shot, and two bullets had struck him.

Community Outcry and Demands for Justice

This tragic case has ignited a firestorm of emotions across the region, with community members and activists calling for stringent action against the vigilantes. The incident has highlighted the dangers of mob justice and the urgent need for a more robust legal framework to prevent such tragedies.

As the investigation continues, Aryan Mishra’s family and the wider community are seeking justice for the young man whose life was cut short by an act of mistaken identity. The case serves as a stark reminder of the perils of vigilantism and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives.

Bengal Assembly Passes 'Aparajita Bill' Seeking Death Penalty for Rape Convicts 18

The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday passed the Aparajita Woman and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, which seeks the death penalty for those convicted of rape and murder, or in cases where the rape victim is left in a vegetative state. The bill was approved through a voice vote, with the BJP legislative team refraining from seeking a division in the vote as promised.

The bill introduces amendments to key provisions under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who actively participated in the debate, emphasized that the passing of this bill is a significant achievement for her government. She criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his inaction, stating, “It is a matter of shame that the Prime Minister could not do what our government did.”

In her speech, Banerjee urged the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister to resign, citing their failure to protect women in the country. The bill was introduced against the backdrop of nationwide protests following the rape and murder of a woman doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Banerjee called for swift justice from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is currently probing the case. She also urged the state Governor to expedite the clearance of the bill so it can be sent to the President’s office for final approval. “Once the bill receives Presidential assent, it will be our responsibility to enforce it effectively,” she added.

The Chief Minister also criticized BJP legislators for remaining silent on similar cases of rape and murder in BJP-ruled states, highlighting the Unnao case as an example. She pointed out the hypocrisy in their actions, noting, “When you speak of an event in West Bengal, will you not speak about what happened at Unnao? It is a matter of shame that the accused legislator in the matter was garlanded.”

CM Shinde Advocates E-Governance for Transparent and Efficient Administration 20

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday strongly advocated for the widespread adoption of e-governance, emphasizing its vital role in improving public service delivery and fostering trust in the administration. Speaking at the inauguration of the 27th National Conference on e-Governance titled ‘Developed India: Safe and Sustainable e-Service Delivery,’ CM Shinde highlighted the swift implementation of the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana as a testament to the benefits of e-governance.

He noted that through the use of e-governance, the state government was able to deposit two instalments of Rs 1,500 each directly into the bank accounts of eligible women beneficiaries in record time. “E-governance is not merely a technological advancement but a medium to change the mindset of people, leading to greater transparency and trust in the administration,” Shinde said.

The Chief Minister further pointed out that e-governance has simplified property registration processes across Maharashtra, allowing transactions related to buying and selling houses to be completed smoothly online. Shinde credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s principle of “minimum government, maximum administration” as a guiding force behind the state’s aggressive e-governance initiatives.

He also revealed that the Chief Minister’s Secretariat has fully transitioned to an e-office system, with plans to extend this to all ministries. Shinde emphasized that all services under Seva Adhikar in Maharashtra are now available online, reducing administrative delays and making the system more responsive to citizens’ needs.

In addition, Shinde announced the establishment of a central registration centre at the Mantralaya entrance, which has streamlined letter acceptance and saved citizens’ time. He also disclosed plans to develop a data centre hub in Navi Mumbai to further support these digital initiatives.

“Maharashtra is leading the way in implementing e-governance, with an information technology policy and plans to integrate artificial intelligence in various sectors like industry, agriculture, and health,” the Chief Minister stated. He underscored the government’s commitment to making administration more citizen-centric, inclusive, and efficient.

In a significant move towards enhancing governance, CM Shinde announced the renaming of the General Administration Department from ‘Administrative Reforms, Structure and Procedures’ to ‘Administrative Innovation, Excellence and Good Governance.’
