The Supreme Court on Monday slammed the Delhi government for expressing its inability to contribute funds for construction of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project and directed it to furnish details of funds spent on advertisements in the last three financial years.

The funds were meant for construction of the RRTS stretch that will connect the national capital with Rajasthan and Haryana.

A bench comprising Justice S K Kaul and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia directed the AAP government to file an affidavit enumerating details of funds within two weeks.

The direction came after the counsel for the Delhi government told the bench that there was paucity of funds and expressed inability to provide monetary assistance.

“You want us to get into what funds you are spending where. All funds for advertisement shall be diverted for this project. You want this kind of order? You are asking for it,” the court said.

“The Delhi government has expressed its inability to contribute funds for common project. Since paucity of funds is an impediment in this project, we call upon the NCT of Delhi to file an affidavit setting forth the funds utilised for advertisement as the project is of national importance. Details may be furnished for last financial years,” the bench said.

Praful Patel appoints Tatkare as Maha NCP chief, Ajit Pawar named legislature party leader 3

Soon after being removed as NCP working president, Praful Patel on Monday evening announced the appointment of Lok Sabha MP Sunil Tatkare as the party’s state unit chief , replacing Jayant Patil, and Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar as its legislature wing leader.

Earlier, NCP president Sharad Pawar sacked Patel and Tatkare, both MPs who have sided with Ajit Pawar in his rebellion, from the party.

Patel, a Rajya Sabha MP who was named NCP working president last month, told a press conference here he had informed Patil to hand over the charge to Tatkare.

Patel said Ajit Pawar will be the NCP’s legislature party leader.

”Today is Guru Purnima; we all wish that Sharad Pawar continues to bless us,” said Patel Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who was present at the press meet, said he enjoyed the support of ”maximum” NCP legislators and said he has given a letter to the Assembly Speaker, seeking disqualification of party MLAs Jayant Patil and Jitendra Awhad from the House.

Ajit Pawar said the party and MLAs were with him and the notice for disqualification against him and the eight newly sworn-in ministers was meaningless.

The deputy CM said he had the party with him and also its symbol (clock).

”Whatever we are doing is in the interest of the party. We will strengthen our party further, ” he said.

Asked who was the NCP’s national head, Ajit Pawar shot back, ”The party national president is Sharad Pawar. Have you forgotten?” He said the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly is appointed by the Speaker and not by a party functionary.

In other appointments announced by Patel, Rupali Chakankar has been named chief of the NCP’s state women’s wing, while MLC Amol Mitkari and Anand Paranjpe will be spokespersons. Suraj Chavan has been appointed the party’s youth wing president in Maharashtra.

RBI says 76 pc of Rs 2000 notes returned to banking system 5

About 76 per cent of the Rs 2000 banknotes have returned to the banking system since the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in May decided to withdraw the high-value note from circulation. The total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023 – when the RBI decided to withdraw the note.

The total value of Rs 2000 banknotes returned to the system after the announcement on May 19 is to the tune of Rs 2.72 lakh crore, RBI said Monday, citing data received from banks. Hence, banknotes in circulation now stand at Rs 0.84 lakh crore.

“Data collected from major banks indicates that out of the total banknotes in Rs 2000 denomination received back from circulation, about 87 per cent is in the form of deposits and the remaining around 13 per cent has been exchanged into other denomination banknotes,” RBI said on Monday in a statement. People are requested to utilise the next three months to deposit or exchange their Rs 2000 banknotes to avoid any rush at the last moment.

People can exchange or deposit their Rs 2,000 notes in bank branches and regional branches of RBI. A non-account holder also can exchange Rs 2000 banknotes up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time at any bank branch. September 30 has been decided as the last date for the purpose of completing the exercise in a time-bound manner and to provide adequate time to the public. RBI may later revisit the September deadline based on the situation going ahead.

On May 19, the RBI decided to withdraw the Rs 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation but said it will continue to remain as legal tender. However, RBI has advised banks to stop issuing such banknotes with immediate effect. The Rs 2000 denomination banknote was introduced in November 2016 under Section 24(1) of the RBI Act, 1934, primarily to meet the currency requirement of the economy in an expeditious manner after the withdrawal of the legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes in circulation at that time.

The objective of introducing Rs 2000 banknotes was met once banknotes in other denominations became available in adequate quantities. Therefore, the printing of Rs 2000 banknotes was stopped in 2018-19.

NCP moves disqualification petition against 9 MLAs after Ajit Pawar's revolt 7

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has moved a petition before Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, seeking disqualification of Ajit Pawar and eight other MLAs who have taken oath as ministers in the Eknath Shinde-led government.

Jitendra Awhad, whom the NCP has appointed leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly after Ajit Pawar joined the ruling alliance, delivered the petition at Narwekar’s residence late Sunday night, as per sources.

When contacted, Narwekar’s office confirmed the petition has been received.

The NCP’s disciplinary committee has also passed a resolution to disqualify the nine legislators. The committee chief, Jaiprakash Dandegaonkar, submitted a report to NCP president Sharad Pawar late Sunday evening after passing the resolution.

“These actions of the nine MLAs call for immediate disqualification as not only are such defections ipso facto seriously damaging to the party but also that if allowed to continue as members, there is a very real likelihood that they will continue to try and undermine the interests of the party,” the resolution said.

The fact that these defections were done in such a secretive manner, ”without the knowledge or consent of the party president”, amounts to desertion of the party which in turn invites disqualification, it said.

“We take cognisance of the same and direct appropriate steps may be taken in accordance with the party constitution and rules as also the tenth schedule of the Constitution of India. As per the procedure, party president Sharad Pawar has been informed and consulted for the same,” the resolution said.

Maharashtra NCP president Jayant Patil on Sunday said his party has moved the disqualification petition against Ajit Pawar and eight others.

He said an e-mail has also been sent to the Election Commission of India informing that the rank and file of the NCP is with party chief Sharad Pawar.

The party founded by Sharad Pawar in 1999 suffered a vertical split on Sunday after his nephew Ajit Pawar broke ranks and joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government as deputy chief minister.

Eight other NCP MLAs, including staunch Sharad Pawar loyalists like Chhagan Bhujbal and Dilip Walse Patil, were made ministers.

Patil said these MLAs ”cannot be called traitors as their betrayal has not yet been proved”.

”Many are in touch with us,” he added.

NCP leaders had hint of BJP's 'intention' to break party, but were unaware of Ajit Pawar's move: Rohit Pawar 10

NCP MLA Rohit Pawar, the grandnephew of party chief Sharad Pawar, on Monday claimed senior leaders had an inkling of BJP’s ”intention” to break the party, but were clueless about Ajit Pawar’s swift move to join hands with the ruling alliance.

Speaking to reporters in Maharashtra’s Pune city, Rohit Pawar said he is firmly with NCP chief Sharad Pawar.

On Sunday, Ajit Pawar led a vertical split in the NCP to become the deputy chief minister, shocking his uncle Sharad Pawar, who founded the party 24 years ago.

Eight NCP leaders were also sworn in as ministers in the Eknath Shinde-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

Reacting to the developments, Rohit Pawar, the grandson of Sharad Pawar’s elder brother Appasaheb Pawar, said, “We had no clue of Ajit Pawar joining hands with BJP. But the BJP was keen on breaking the NCP. We knew this much.” ”However, going by all these developments, we wonder whether people like me made a mistake by joining politics,” he added.

Asked about Ajit Pawar’s move, the legislator said he is emotional towards him as he is his uncle. ”He (Ajit Pawar) has helped me in his personal capacity also. However, politically, we all are with party chief Sharad Pawar,” he said.

Rohit Pawar also said if put to test, Sharad Pawar will have a larger acceptance as the leader of people.

In the wake of nine NCP leaders, including Ajit Pawar, joining the Eknath Shinde government, party chief Sharad Pawar has convened a meeting on July 5 in Mumbai to discuss the developments and the future course of action.

“The state has a history of struggle and perseverance. We will continue to do so,” Rohit Pawar said.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)’s senior leader Ajit Pawar on Sunday joined Eknath Shinde-led government in Maharashtra and took oath as the deputy chief minister of the state. In a dramatic turn of events, Pawar, along with nine MLAs, reached Raj Bhawan to meet Governor Ramesh Bais.

According to sources, MLAs accompanying Ajit Pawar to Raj Bhawan were upset with NCP supremo Sharad Pawar’s ‘unilateral’ decision to share the stage and ally with Rahul Gandhi at the opposition unity meet in Bihar’s Patna last month. Pawar was later administered oath as the second deputy chief minister of Maharashtra.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was also present on the occasion. Earlier, a meeting of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders was called at the residence of NCP leader Ajit Pawar on Sunday and later Ajit Pawar along with other party leaders reached the Raj Bhavan.

Police granted permission to ‘Quran burning protest’ outside a mosque in Sweden

Police granted permission to 'Quran burning protest' outside a mosque in Sweden 14

In spite of worldwide uproar over Quran burning, Swedish authorities approved burning of Islam’s holy book outside of a mosque on Sodermalm island of Stockholm on July 28. In a decision that may risk its NATO bid before the bloc’s key summit in July, Sweden granted permission to burn the Quran ahead of Eid. Swedish police have given the go-ahead for a small demonstration to take place outside a Stockholm Mosque at which the organisers said they would “tear up the Quran and burn it”, which could further complicate Sweden’s bid to join NATO. A series of protests in Sweden against Islam and for Kurdish rights have heightened tensions with Turkey, whose backing Sweden needs to gain entry to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Turkey in late January suspended talks with Sweden on its NATO application after Rasmus Paludan, leader of Danish far-right political party Hard Line, burned a copy of the Quran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. The protest was triggered after a 37-year-old Iraqi citizen named Salwan Momika living in Sweden trudged on the Islamic holy book and set several pages ablaze. Swedish people are quite okay with the anti-Islam activists that burning the Quran which caused violent protests in Sweden. Hijab, niqab, halal dietary restrictions, Islamic religious leaders, fatwas, Islamic schools that separate boys and girls, private Islamic family courts, Islamic organizations and political parties, demand for more mosques, distrust or thinly veiled contempt for the host country’s culture, problems with the host country’s public schools and childcare services, and resistance to adaptation, sometimes stated proudly and outright. Meanwhile liberal parties giving extra importance to Muslim immigrants and eyeing the Muslim vote, these things are reasons for such provocations.

Not to mention riots over prophet cartoons and perceived blasphemy, accusations of Islamophobia, seeking to control free speech so Muslim sensitivities won’t be hurt in Sweden. Moreover, there are no laws against such acts in Sweden (nor, of course, against burning Bibles, flags), perhaps this is the reason there was no legal recourse to be taken.

The riots were started by known troublemakers and petty offenders. There was no religious element, they just seized an opportunity to make trouble. Local police had been engaging with local imams well in advance, the local Muslim community was well aware that the police were aware of the situation, and was committed to not rising to this deliberate provocation. Swedish laws also specifically forbid the government to get involved in law enforcement and freedom of speech matters. Swedes did not vote for right–wing parties, cut down immigration, close Islamic schools, etc. because they are fundamentally racist.

The original organizers of this event were Rasmus Paludan, a Danish far-right provocateur, and Dan Park, a Swedish far-right provocateur. Rasmus Paludan is known for burning the Quran several times in Denmark, explicitly to anger Muslims, and Dan Park is known for having drawn the prophet Muhammad, explicitly to anger Muslims. After they had their permit request denied for security reasons, and Rasmus Paludan received a two-year ban of entry to Sweden, unnamed far-right activists went to a suburb called Rosengård and filmed themselves burning a Quran and posted the video online. The only purpose was to anger Muslims.

'Satyaprem Ki Katha': Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani embrace love in new song 'Le Aaunga' 16

Amid the success of ‘Satyaprem Ki Katha’, the makers, on Saturday, unveiled a new love song featuring the film’s lead actors Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani. ‘Le Aaunga’ is sung by Arijit Singh. The song’s video shows Kartik and Kiara romancing each other.

Sharing the song’s link, Kartik took to Instagram and wrote, “On your demand here’s #LeAaunga in @arijitsingh ‘s voice. One of my Favourite songs from the album #LeAaunga Song Out Now! #SatyaPremKiKatha IN CINEMAS NOW.” ‘Satya Prem Ki Katha’ hit the theatres on Thursday. The film opened to positive response.

As per trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the movie raked in Rs 9.25 crore on day 1 of the film’s release. “SatyaPremKiKatha puts up a healthy score on Day 1 [holiday]… Gathered speed during the course of the day, after an ordinary start in the morning shows… Evening shows, expectedly, saw very good occupancies due to glowing WOM… Thu Rs 9.25 cr. #India biz,” Adarsh tweeted.

He added, “Emerges #KartikAaryan’s third biggest opening day, after #BhoolBhulaiyaa2 and #LoveAajKal. Going forward, the numbers may decline on Day 2 [Fri], since it’s a working day, but Day 3 and 4 [Sat-Sun] hold the key… If its target audience – families – patronise the content, a strong weekend number cannot be ruled out. #Boxoffice.”

Helmed by Sameer Vidhwans, and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the film is revolved around Kartik Aaryan and Kiara’s love story. The film marks the actors’ second collaboration after the blockbuster ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, which was released in 2022. Seeing abundant love, Kiara penned a note of gratitude on Instagram. “Feeling extremely emotional reading all the reviews. Katha has been a very special character to me with a crucial message and today seeing you all give her so much love makes my heart so full,” she wrote.

‘Satya Prem Ki Katha’ also stars Gajraj Rao and Supriya Pathak.

Gujarat HC rejects bail plea of activist Teesta Setalvad, asks her to surrender immediately

The Gujarat High Court on Saturday rejected the regular bail plea of social activist Teesta Setalvad and directed her to surrender immediately in a case pertaining to the alleged fabrication of evidence to frame innocent people in 2002 post-Godhra riots cases.

The court of Justice Nirzar Desai rejected Setalvad’s bail plea and directed her to surrender immediately as she is already out of jail after securing interim bail.

As the applicant is out on interim bail granted by the Supreme Court, she is directed to surrender immediately, the court said in its order. Setalvad and co-accused and former Director General of Police R B Sreekumar were taken into custody by Gujarat police on June 25 last year and a court sent them in judicial custody on July 2 after their police remand ended.

She walked out of jail in September 2022 after being granted relief by the apex court. The Ahmedabad crime branch registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Setalvad, Sreekumar and jailed former IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt a day after the Supreme Court dismissed a petition challenging the clean chit given by a special investigation team to then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and others in the 2002 post-Godhra riots cases.

Setalvad, Sreekumar and Bhatt were accused of abusing the process of law by conspiring to fabricate evidence and frame innocent people for an offence punishable with capital punishment. While dismissing the petition filed by Zakia Jafri whose husband and former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri was killed during the riots, the SC had observed that “it appears to us that a coalesced effort of the disgruntled officials of the State of Gujarat along with others was to create sensation by making revelations which were false to their own knowledge.” All those involved in such abuse of process “need to be in the dock and proceed in accordance with law,” the supreme court had said.

Setalvad and other two were subsequently booked under Indian Penal Code sections 468, 471 (forgery), 194 (giving or fabricating false evidence with intent to procure conviction of capital offence), 211 (institute criminal proceedings to cause injury), 218 (public servant framing incorrect record or writing with intent to save person from punishment or property from forfeiture), and 120 (B).
