Olympian Neeraj Chopra wins second straight Diamond League title in Lausanne 3
Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra clinched the prestigious Diamond League title for the second consecutive time by throwing his spear to 87.66m on Friday but the coveted 90m mark eluded the star Indian javelin thrower yet again. Coming back from a one-month injury lay-off, Chopra’s title-winning performance at the Lausanne leg in challenging conditions was below his own top-10 efforts but he still stamped his authority in the prestigious One-day meet.
The 25-year-old Chopra, who had skipped three top events due to a muscle strain he sustained last month, had won the season-opening Diamond League in Doha on May 5 with his fourth career-best throw of 88.67m.
Chopra, who usually produces his best in early rounds, had to wait till his fifth attempt to lead the field. He was at the second spot till the end of the fourth round.
”I was feeling a bit nervous coming back from an injury. It was a bit cold here tonight. I am still far from my best, but I feel it is getting better,” Chopra said after his win.
It was a cloudy day with the temperature during the men’s javelin throw event recording 17 degree celsius and humidity at 78 percent. ”I am relieved it is coming together well for me. A win is a win and I will take that happily.” Chopra began with a foul and then had 83.52m and 85.04m throws. He had another foul in the fourth round before coming up with his title-winning throw of 87.66m next. His sixth and last throw was 84.15m.
Germany’s Julian Weber was second with a best throw of 87.03m, while Tokyo Olympics silver medallist and season-leader Jakub Vadlejch (SB: 89.51m) of the Czech Republic was third with an 86.13m effort.
Reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, who has been struggling for form, was fifth with a best throw of 82.23m.
Chopra had won the Lausanne leg in August last year also for his maiden Diamond League title. A month later, he became the first Indian Diamond League champion after winning the 2022 grand finale in Zurich.
The Indian superstar, who has a personal best of 89.94m, cemented his top spot in the Diamond League standings with 16 points, followed by Vadlejch (13 points) and Weber (12 points).
Following the Lausanne event, men’s javelin throw will also be a part of the roster in the Monaco and Zurich legs on July 21 and August 31 respectively before the Diamond League grand finale in Eugene, USA, on September 16-17.
On May 29, Chopra had issued a statement, informing about his injury. He pulled out of the FBK Games on June 4 at Hengelo (the Netherlands), Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland on June 13 and Ostrava Golden Spike meet in Czech Republic on June 27. All the three meets were World Athletics Continental Tour gold events. But he did not miss any Diamond League competition as the subsequent legs in Rabat, Rome, Paris and Oslo did not have men’s javelin events on the roster.
In the men’s long jump, India’s Murali Sreeshankar finished fifth with a below-par jump of 7.88m which he achieved in the third round.
The 24-year-old Sreeshankar, who had clinched the third spot in the Paris leg on June 9 for his maiden Diamond League podium finish, had produced a career-best 8.41m during the National Inter-State Championships in Bhubaneswar earlier this month.
LaQuan Nairn of Bahamas, who beat Sreeshankar for the gold in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, took the top spot with a third-round jump of 8.11m.
Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece was second with 8.07m effort while Yuki Hashioka of Japan was third with a jump of 7.98m.
Japanese journalist barred from entering Hong Kong without clear reason 5
Japanese journalist was barred from entering Hong Kong without a clear reason and was sent back to his country, a Japanese newspaper reported, raising concerns over the city’s shrinking press freedoms.
The Japan Times, a prominent English-language newspaper, reported Friday that a freelance journalist was taken by officials to a room after arriving at the city’s airport Thursday evening. Yoshiaki Ogawa, known for his coverage in the financial hub, was later interviewed for around an hour, it said.
Ogawa said officials only told him that he could not be granted permission to stay in the city and he was sent back to Tokyo on Friday, the report said. It ”truly made me feel how Hong Kong has changed … this would have been unthinkable before,” Ogawa was quoted as saying in the report.
In an email reply to the Associated Press, the Immigration Department in Hong Kong did not confirm the events and refused to comment on individual cases. It added the department acts in accordance with the laws and policies in handling each immigration case. The entry denial has raised concerns over the erosion of Hong Kong’s press freedom, which was once a hallmark of the former British colony.
Hong Kong returned to China’s rule in 1997 and was promised the right to retain its Western-style freedoms for 50 years after the handover, but its press scene drastically shrank after the enactment of a Beijing-imposed national security law in 2020. The law was introduced after the pro-democracy protests in 2019 and has prosecuted many leading Hong Kong activists, including Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily, and other top management staffers at the newspaper. The Japan Times said Ogawa has been closely following Hong Kong issues since 2014 and covered the 2019 movement but he did not plan to write anything about the city during his trip.
Media rights group Reporters Without Borders tweeted Friday it was appalled at Ogawa’s ordeal. Hong Kong was ranked 140th out of 180 countries and territories in the group’s latest World Press Freedom Index released in May. The watchdog said the city has experienced an unprecedented setback since 2020, when the security law was introduced.
In January, the Hong Kong Journalists Association reported that Japan-based photographer Michiko Kiseki was denied entry to the city in late 2022. The association said she had covered the 2019 protests and was grilled by authorities about her exhibition in Japan.
26 passengers charred to death after bus catches fire on Samruddhi Expressway; 8 others survive 7
At least 26 passengers were charred to death after the bus they were travelling in caught fire after hitting a divider following a tyre burst on the Samruddhi Expressway in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district in the wee hours of Saturday, police said.
The private bus was on its way from Nagpur to Pune when it rammed into a divider around 1.30 am at Pimpalkhuta village near Sindkhedraja in Buldhana, around 134 km from here, they said.
Eight others, including the bus driver and its cleaner, survived the tragedy as they managed to come out of the burning vehicle through broken windows, the police said, adding that the driver was being interrogated and the process of arresting him was underway.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ordered a probe into the accident and announced ex-gratia of Rs five lakh for the families of each deceased.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the bodies of the deceased were charred beyond recognition and if the identity of the victims is not established, then DNA testing will be conducted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other leaders expressed grief over the loss of lives.
Talking to PTI, Buldhana Superintendent of Police Sunil Kadasne said, ”There were 33 passengers in the bus, of whom 25 were charred to death. The other eight passengers were taken to a nearby hospital and are safe.” As per the preliminary information, a tyre of the bus burst and the vehicle hit a pole before colliding with a divider and catching fire, he said.
The bus belonging to Vidarbha Travels had left Nagpur for Pune at 4 pm on Friday. It stopped at Karanja in Yavatmal district for dinner but met with the accident some time after it resumed the journey, the police said.
”After hitting the divider, the bus fell on its right side with the entry/exit door of the bus facing the sky. Within minutes, the vehicle caught fire. Some of the passengers were able to come out of the broken windows from the rear side,” a senior police official from Buldhana said. One of the survivors of the ill-fated bus said he and a few others managed to come out of the burning vehicle by breaking its rear window. ”A tyre of the bus burst and the vehicle caught fire immediately. The blaze spread in no time. A passenger sitting next to me and I managed to escape by breaking the rear window,” he said.
A local resident, who rushed to the site, said the people who could come out of the bus later told him that they sought help from other vehicles on the highway, but nobody stopped.
CM Shinde spoke to Buldhana district collector and SP and took stock of the situation, a statement issued by the chief minister’s office said.
A medical team and the fire brigade personnel stationed on the expressway reached the spot and started the rescue work. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, it said.
Shinde termed the accident as ”unfortunate” and stressed the need for drivers on the expressway to exercise caution while driving. In a tweet, PM Modi said, ”Deeply saddened by the devastating bus mishap in Buldhana, Maharashtra. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to the affected.” Home Minister Shah described the accident as heartbreaking. ”In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident,” he tweeted in Hindi.
Union minister Nitin Gadkari said in a tweet that the death of passengers in the accident was very unfortunate, painful and tragic. Deputy CM Fadnavis condoled the death of passengers and said the injured ones are out of danger. ”…As per preliminary information given by the Buldhana SP, the bus belonging to Vidarbha travels hit a pole and then the diesel tank burst, then it caught fire,” Fadnavis said.
Talking to reporters, he said a smart system is being installed on the Samruddhi Expressway to prevent accidents. ”The system will check the speed of vehicles and alert them. But it will take some time. Till then, we will have to create awareness among drivers at the toll booths on what precautions need to be taken to prevent accidents at night,” he said. ”The bodies of the accident victims are charred beyond recognition. They would be handed over to the families after the identity is established. But in case the identity is not established by any other means, then a DNA test will have to be done,” he said. Brushing aside criticism about the poor quality of construction of the expressway, he said, ”Only vehicle error and human error have been noticed in the accidents that occurred on the expressway so far,” he said.
PM Modi had inaugurated the 520-km-long Phase-1 of the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg in December last year. Officially named as ‘Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg’, it is a pet project of Fadnavis.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar expressed grief over the tragedy and said the government needs to take steps to curb the speed limit of private vehicles.
”The government should take immediate steps to prevent accidents,” he said, adding he had expressed concern over the number of accidents on the expressway just last week.
Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Ajit Pawar said with the bus accident, the issue of security of vehicles and passengers has once again come to the fore.
The government needs to work on emergency measures to prevent such accidents. The spate of accidents on the expressway continues due to the bad quality of the expressway and human errors, he said.
After constant investigations, the CBI found that Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer and Additional Commissioner of Customs and GST, Sachin Sawant, has amassed huge assets in his name, in the names of his wife, father and mother and incurred huge expenditure, disproportionate to the tune of Rs. 2.45 crore to their legal sources of income. The agency also suspects that a BMW car and another vehicle owned by Sawant through benamidars. The ED joined the probe to trace the money trail. Sachin Sawant, an Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer and Additional Commissioner of Customs and GST, has come under scrutiny following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a corruption and disproportionate assets case. Sawant’s arrest has raised questions about his background and alleged involvement in illicit activities.
Sawant, a member of the 2008 batch of IRS officers, has had a different career within the government. He served as the deputy director of the ED in Mumbai Zone 2 between 2017 and 2019, during which time he was responsible for overseeing financial investigations and enforcing laws against money laundering and economic offenses. In 2020, Sawant resumed as officer on special duty to a senior minister in the Maha Vikas Aghadi Government government, further coagulating his position within the government hierarchy. However, his career took a different turn when he joined the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department in Lucknow.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) initiated a disproportionate assets case against him based on a corruption complaint. The investigation revealed a significant increase in the assets of the Sawant family from Rs 1.4 lakh in 2011 to Rs 2.1 crore in 2022, raising suspicions about the source of these funds. The ED’s search operation at Sawant’s residences in Mumbai and Lucknow, as well as the homes of his relatives, resulted in his arrest. The probe uncovered a questionable transaction involving the purchase of a flat in Navi Mumbai. The flat was registered in the name of a company called Seven Hills Constrowell India, where Sawant’s father held a position as a director. It was discovered that funds for the purchase were routed through multiple loans, personal accounts, and current accounts belonging to Sawant’s family. Additionally, a substantial amount of cash, around Rs 1 crore, was allegedly involved in the acquisition.
Further investigations revealed that Seven Hills Constrowell India had its registered office in a modest chawl in Dadar (East), and the company filed only one income-tax return in 2018-19, indicating a negligible income and a loss of Rs 6,800. Curiously, the mobile number provided in the income-tax return was linked to Sawant himself. He was brought to Mumbai from Lucknow after his arrest, the sources said, adding that he will be produced before a court in Mumbai. When Sawant was posted as the deputy director of the ED’s Mumbai Zone 2 unit, he investigated a diamond trading company for illegally diverting and remitting over Rs 500 crore. One of the accused arrested in the case claimed Sawant demanded a bribe and went to the Central Bureau of Investigation, following which an FIR was registered. Now Sachin Sawant has been arrested and he is in Mumbai police custody.
Pawar did not agreed to form government with the BJP in 2019 11
The Nationalist Congress Party on Thursday accused Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of trying to garner publicity by “misusing” NCP president Sharad Pawar’s name to outshine CM Eknath Shinde.
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Fadnavis in an interview to a TV channel recently claimed Pawar agreed to form government with the BJP in 2019 and then backed off after three-four days.
Reacting to the deputy CM’s claim, NCP national spokesperson Clyde Crasto in a statement said, “After being subdued by Eknath Shinde in advertisements in the past few days, Devendra Fadnavis is now trying to garner publicity on his own, he is therefore misusing the name of Sharad Pawar in interviews, to gain free publicity and outshine Eknath Shinde.”
Fortnite – Alleged game of jihad was big TRP for main stream media channels 13
These days we hear different kinds of Jihad and the most famous of them is love jihad. But in reality, there are four types of jihads: jihad with one’s heart (bil-qalb), with one’s tongue (bil-lisan), with one’s hand (bil-yad), and with a sword (bil-sayf). Some translate Jihad as what you do to get close to your creator. Since there are a billion Muslim in the world there are a billion verses of Jihad. Some would say teaching the Quran, some would say living as a good Muslim, some saying helping the poor, some saying respecting elderly, some saying putting your life at risk for your religion and Allah, some say earning clean money for your children. In recent times some people invented Thook Jihad (saliva Jihad) Naukari Jihad (Job Jihad) and the latest one is Game Jihad. This is one computer game where you shoot at other players.
It has cartoon style graphics and large battles that make it easily accessible, and it is available on multiple platforms, including console, PC and mobile. This game is called Fortnite, and it is a survival game where hundreds of players fight against each other to be the last one standing. It is a fast-paced, action-packed game, not unlike The Hunger Games, where strategic thinking is a must in order to survive. There are an estimated 125 million players on Fortnite. Players can spend real money to upgrade the equipment of the looks of their characters, and access some additional functions. A combination of the simple gameplay, cartoon graphics and being free make it popular, especially with younger gamers.
In the recent past, The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) wrote to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) to initiate an enquiry against “Fortnite” and instant messaging social platform “Discord” for their alleged involvement in religious conversion of a minor boy in Ghaziabad. The Commission took action when they came across a news article, wherein it has been informed that two men including a Caretaker of a Mosque in Ghaziabad and a man from Mumbai were involved in religious conversion of a minor boy through this online gaming platform, “Fortnite”.
On 6th June there was a news report on Aaj Tak by Sudhir Chaudhary who instilled fear and rage about “gaming jihad” – a new and sinister menace. He said that the young Hindu boys are allegedly “converted” online. Chaudhary also mentioned that the two of the boys were from Ghaziabad and one each from Faridabad and Chandigarh were lured to believe that by memorising the ayats of the Quran, they can win online games, that by adopting Islam, miracles will happen in their lives. Like the movie “The Kerala Story” conversion figures were given 32000 and later on clarified and corrected to 3, here also Sudhir Chaudhary gave figures of some thousands, which are imaginary. Possibly that was for his TRP kick.
The news was covered by all right-wing inclined channels and one channel went to the extent of stating that the game itself is teaching how to shoot or kill, like Pakistani militant training. The prime-time debates went on discussing this new found Jihad for days and months but there was lack of authenticity.
Two years ago, a boy called Rohan, had supposedly bought some “computer parts” from a Muslim man called Baddo in Mumbra, Mumbai. He had initially met Baddo through an “online game” but there is no clarity on how. Baddo (30) is the key accused in the conversion racket. Baddo aka Shahnawaz Maqsood lives in Maharashtra and is currently on the run. They were friendly and allegedly talked a lot online. Rohan subsequently began showing an interest in Islam, even finding a mosque in his neighbourhood to attend. Upset, Rohan’s father filed a police complaint against this unnamed Mumbai person for “influencing” his son. The Ghaziabad police then filed an FIR in the case. The police alleged Baddo was the head of a sprawling conspiracy to lure Hindu boys on gaming apps and convert them to Islam.
The other teenager’s parents told one news portal that her son had never interacted with Baddo, let alone been a “victim of jihad”. Instead, her son’s phone number was mentioned in the FIR because his number was found on Rohan’s mobile phone. The parent also said it was Rohan, not a mysterious Muslim man online, who tried to coax her son into showing an interest in Islam. The parents also said that the media has lied about her son and this entire saga.
This alleged conversion racket started during the Covid-induced lockdown in 2020 when schools were shut and teenagers exposed to online classes. This is when the minors from Faridabad, Ludhiana, Ghaziabad virtually met Baddo at a gaming platform called Fortnite. The first alleged conversion that came to light was of the Jain boy from Ghaziabad. During his visits to the Ghaziabad Jama Masjid, he came in touch with Abdul Rehman, alias Nanni. Nanni and the minor would exchange WhatsApp texts discussing how to be a good Muslim. In one such conversation Nanni encouraged the minor to have a strong devotion to Allah. Rehman alias Nanni, a masjid committee member was arrested on 4 June. However, no connection between Baddo and Nanni has yet been established by the police.
Fortnite was released in 2017 and won the Kids choice favourite video game award in 2021. The game is played by four players as a group that is tasked with fighting off zombie-like creatures and building fortifications. The messaging app Discord is a popular chat service used by gamers. A huge majority of these kids get addicted to Fortnite, playing more than 6 hours at a time. The toxicity you get is high. Most of it comes from curious and adventurous pre-teens. For whatever reason people may hate Fortnite, but it’s not going to go away anytime soon. Even if Apex Legends becomes more popular, Fortnite’s unique gameplay will keep a decent player base engaged, like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Minecraft have in the past.
In this entire saga, the three boys allegedly getting infatuated towards Islam made headlines but none of these broadcasters tried reaching the depth of the story. I don’t promote even one such conversion but also don’t support baseless statistics and panic presentations. Police are investigating the matter, let us wait for the truth to be revealed.

Rains lash Mumbai and suburbs; 1 person killed in tree fall incident 15
A 22-year-old person was killed and another one injured on Thursday after a tree fell on their hut in Mumbai as moderate to heavy rains lashed the city and its suburbs in the last 24 hours, officials said.
This is the third death here in two days in tree fall incidents amid rains.
On Wednesday, two persons were killed in separate tree fall incidents in Mumbai’s western suburbs.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued an ‘orange alert’, forecasting heavy to very heavy rains on Thursday in six Maharashtra districts – Palghar, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Nashik.
The IMD issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Mumbai, predicting relatively less intense showers on Thursday.
According to civic officials, no major water-logging was reported since early Thursday morning in the city and suburbs as the rain intensity reduced after an overnight heavy spell.
Bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) were running without any diversion in the morning, they said.
Suburban services on the Central Railway and Western Railway were normal though the trains were running a few minutes late, the officials said.
At around 2.30 am on Thursday, a huge banyan tree got uprooted at the Indu Oil Mill compound in Byculla area and fell on a hut, trapping a few persons inside, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
After getting a call, fire brigade personnel reached the spot, cut the tree branches and brought out two injured persons from the hut.
Both of them were rushed to the nearby JJ Hospital where doctors declared one of them, Rehman Khan (22), as ”brought dead”, the official said.
The condition of the other person, Rizwan Khan (20), is ”stable” and he is undergoing treatment, he said. Moderate to heavy rains lashed parts of Mumbai and its adjoining areas in the last 24 hours.
A civic official said the IMD has predicted ”moderate to heavy rain in the city and suburbs with very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places” in the next 24 hours. In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Thursday, Colaba in south Mumbai received 148 mm rainfall, while Santacruz in western suburbs recorded 121.6 mm rainfall, according to the IMD, Mumbai.
As per the BMC, the island city, eastern and western suburbs received an average 93 mm, 127 mm and 123 mm rainfall, respectively, in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Thursday.
The IMD Mumbai measures rainfall at its observatories located in Colaba and Santacruz, while the civic body has its own automatic rain gauges installed at several locations in the city and suburbs.
An IMD official here said seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai and neighbouring areas received ”extremely heavy” rainfall in the past 24 hours.
Four of these lakes, Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa and Bhatsa, located in neighbouring Thane district, recorded 144 mm, 137 mm, 109 mm and 137 mm rainfall, respectively.
Vihar and Tulsi lakes in Mumbai received 159 mm and 235 mm rainfall, respectively, while the Upper Vaitarna lake in Nashik district recorded 122 mm downpour, the official said.

2 persons arrested, juvenile nabbed for sexual assault of girl in Delhi 19
Two persons were arrested and a juvenile was apprehended for allegedly sexually assaulting a girl in northwest Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy area, police said on Thursday.
On Tuesday, police got a call complaining that the girl was sexually assaulted.
All the four accused were identified and three of them, including a juvenile, were nabbed. One accused is absconding and efforts are underway to apprehend him, police said. A case was registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
The two arrested accused have been identified as Bobby (19) and Rahul (20), both residents of the Shahbad Dairy area, police said. Apart from these three, two juveniles have also been apprehended in Section 21 of the POCSO Act for failing to report the commission of an offence, they added.
