Five reprobates including NCP leader arrested for threatening Sanjay Raut; all allegedly linked to MLA Sunil Raut 2

Sunil Raut, an MLA from the Shiv Sena UBT, ran into trouble after his friend and a NCP leader were arrested for threatening his brother and Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut. The conspiracy to increase Raut’s security is thought to have been hatched by NCP activist Mayur Shinde, who has a history of criminal activity, according to the police. Since the BJP-Shinde government has come to power, police security cover for the MP has been reduced. The BJP and MNS have criticized Raut and demanded that the police look into his involvement in the conspiracy in the wake of the arrests.

In the past week, Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, and Raut both reported receiving threats on the same day. The complaint claims that Raut received a threat to be shot from an unknown caller if he did not personally answer his calls. The caller further threatened Raut with being “sprayed with bullets” if he did not stop his “morning loudspeakers” (i.e., press conferences) within a month.

According to an investigation, the two people who called the Raut brothers did so while intoxicated. Using technical assistance, Kanjurmarg police were able to link the calls to two individuals: Rizwan Ansari (26), an auto driver, and Shahid Ansari, an interior designer. Along with them, two other suspects were detained: Munna Mohammed Mustaq Shaikh, a Dharavi resident, and Akash Patel, another auto driver. They identified an NCP activist named Mayur Shinde during questioning who allegedly knew Raut’s brother and gave them the order to place these calls.

Shiv Sena UBT Vinayak Raut MP said, “It is not a call or drama; if it had been fake, then there wouldn’t be any complaint registered against threat calls.”

Gopal Shetty, a BJP MP, stated, “They are only trying to gain political mileage as it showcases fake drama by the ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’ as they are opposed to the current government of the state.”

“It is a complete foul play created by ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’ to gain sympathy in front of the people and gain police protection on purpose,” BJP spokesperson Bhalchandra Shirsat said.

The accused should be punished in accordance with the law, regardless of the political party, according to Sachin Sawant, a spokesperson for the Congress, and if someone has broken the law, they will be punished.

A UBT Shiv Sena member told Afternoon Voice, “This can be another conspiracy to attack the Raut brothers. This government has already harassed Sanjay Raut and lambasted the investigating authorities. Suni Raut is a politician, and any Maha Vikas Aghadi leader can be seen with each other in a photograph. By using photo evidence, some people are creating narratives that suit their agenda. But soon the truth will come out.”

An investigating police officer said, “We came to know that NCP’s Mayur Shinde, who has a few criminal cases, allegedly asked auto drivers in his area to issue threats to Raut. We have arrested five people, but the question is whether the threat complaint lodged by Raut is honest,” said an officer. We are probing this matter further and will soon reach a conclusion.”

BJP MLA Nitesh Rane condemned Raut for supposedly using deceitful means to get more police security. “Who is Mayur Shinde? He is a supporter of Sunil Raut (Sanjay Raut’s brother). A complaint under Section 420 should be filed against Sanjay Raut. Sanjay Raut and his brother Sunil Raut are so dubious; they orchestrated threats by their own workers. By telling lies like this, they walk around with police protection,” Rane said.

BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule said “the complaint of a threat was a deliberate attempt to defame the home department and deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who handles it. BJP MLC Prasad Lad said Raut must be arrested for misleading the people, government, and police. “The manner in which Mayur Shinde was arrested, the alleged threats to Raut, and Shinde’s links to the underworld all must be investigated, and criminal charges must be filed against Raut,” he said.

Afternoon Voice attempted to reach MLA Sunil Raut for comment on the matter, but he refused to respond to our questions.

"I am shocked…law and order situation in Manipur has totally failed": Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh after mob torches his house 4

Union Minister Rajkumar Ranjan Singh on Friday expressed anguish at miscreants torching his residence in Imphal’s Kongba area on Thursday night and said the “law and order situation in Manipur has failed”.

Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, who is Minister of State for External Affairs, said he had constructed his house with prayers and was unable to understand why it was targeted.

“Someone tries to vandalize it, demolish, I feel shocked. I never expect such kind of attitude and activities from my fellow citizens of this state. I pray to God also not to happen again. This is the second time, the first time, I anyhow convinced them and the security protected…. that was in early evening. This time yesterday it was late night, around 10:30. Everything was normal, suddenly crowds of people came and attacked, I was told,” Singh told ANI.

The minister, who is in Kerala, said when the house was on fire, the fire brigades could not enter the place as people created blockages.

“I do not know why they are attacking. There is no reason. In the whole process, I am trying to bring the peace, negotiating…my senior ministers and colleagues to bring normalcy in the state. In the meanwhile, this kind of unwanted incident happened. If my sons and daughters and family happens to be here…that burning and throwing of petrol, it seems to attempt on my life also,” he said.

“Law and order condition in Manipur is a total failure. The existing government could not maintain peace that’s why the central government has sent a lot of protections and Rapid Action Force. I don’t know how the state mechanism is failure, I feel like that,” he added.

The minister had told ANI earlier that about 50 miscreants had attacked his house.

“It is extremely sad to see what happened last night. I was told that more than 50 miscreants attacked my home. Damage has been done to the ground floor and the first floor of my residence. Neither me or anybody from my family was present during that time. Thankfully, nobody got injured.”

The minister said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had called him and he informed that he was out of the state.

Singh hails from the Meiti community and has been making efforts for restoration of peace in Manipur which has witnessed ethnic violence.

“An eye for an eye will make the whole world go blind. Violence doesn’t help any cause. Those who are indulging in this violence are doing a huge disservice to the nation. It also reflects that they are enemies of humanity,” Singh told ANI.

Nine people were killed while more than 10 were injured in fresh violence in Manipur on Wednesday.

The state government has further extended shutdown on internet in the state up to June 20.

On Wednesday, miscreants tried to burn down the official residence of Manipur minister Nemcha Kipgen in Imphal West. His home was partly burnt.

Violence gripped Manipur on May 3 after clashes erupted during a rally organised by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the demand for the inclusion of Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list.

Olympic medallist Wrestler Sakshi Malik, who has been a part of the protest with other grapplers against the outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, said on Friday that the filed chargesheet has the WFI chief’s name.

However, she said that there is “a lot of pressure” on the minor’s family. “He (Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh) has been named in the chargesheet submitted by police yesterday. In the minor’s case, it is clear that there is a lot of pressure on the family. We will decide on the further course of action after our remaining demands are met by the government,” Sakshi Malik said.

On Thursday, India’s ace wrestler Sakshi Malik had said that grapplers’ lawyer has filed an application to get the chargesheet then accordingly the next step will be decided. The wrestlers had halted their protest till June 15 after being assured by Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur that the chargesheet in the case will be filed by June 15.

“The chargesheet clearly states that he is guilty but our lawyer has filed an application so that he gets his hands on the chargesheet at the earliest so that we can find out the charges. After that, we will see whether those charges are correct or not. Our next step would come once we see everything – whether the promises that were made are being fulfilled or not. We are waiting,” wrestler Sakshi Malik told ANI. Delhi Police on Thursday filed a chargesheet in the FIR against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on the complaint of protesting wrestlers. The chargesheet has been filed under sections 354, 354D, 345A & 506 (1) of IPC, Special Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava said.

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) announced to hold elections on July 6 amid the ongoing protest by wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the newly-appointed returning officer for WFI elections Mahesh Mittal Kumar in a statement. Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat along with other wrestlers had been on a protest in the national capital since the beginning of this year in order to press for the arrest of the Brij Bhushan over allegations of sexual harassment.

Uttarakhand communal violence: State BJP claims situation normal 7

The state government describes the situation as normal despite the racial unrest occurring in Purola, Uttarakhand, where right-wing protestors are marching in opposition to the Muslim community. Soon after the kidnapping of a young girl on May 26 by two men, this incident made headlines. Those two men, Jitendra Saini and Zahid Malik, were detained shortly after the police investigation.

Former BSP MLA Shahzad stated, “The situation has gotten worse as it appears the BJP is deliberately targeting the community to foster hatred and violence. Criminals should be punished in accordance with the law, but the average person should not be harassed or singled out. The state government is not attempting to restore law and order, but it is possible if the central government so chooses.

“Some political entities are trying to politicize this issue as common people only want peace in the state, and intentionally targeting communities and creating violence should not be done in the state,” social activist Renu Singh said.

The phrase “Love Jihadis should vacate their shops and leave before the Mahapanchayat held on June 15” was written on numerous posters that were hung on the storefronts after this incident was widely branded as “Love Jihad.”

Although some right-wing organizations had called for a “Mahapanchayat” to address the “Love Jihad” issue, the panchayat was not held. Some people in Uttarakhand claimed that intentional communal violence had been started, despite the fact that only the offender should be held accountable for the crime. Communities are being targeted, and some activists claimed that the state’s citizens are being used as political pawns, which is contrary to their expectations of peace.

Sanjay Dobhal, an independent MLA, stated, “In my view, only those who committed the crime should be punished in accordance with the law, and everyone else should not be involved in the matter.”

Suresh Singh Chauhan, a BJP MLA, stated that “some people might be paid for this kind of activity to disrupt the law and order situation by some political people and create communal tensions between the communities of people in Purola as the police is working to maintain the law and order situation in the state.”

As the situation in the area has gotten worse, Congress MLA Furkan Ahmad stated, “We do not want any communal tensions, and we expect everyone to stay together peacefully.”

Was Senthil Balaji’s arrest politically motivated?

Was Senthil Balaji's arrest politically motivated? 9

Amid heavy security and patrolling, Tamil Nadu’s Electricity Minister Senthil Balaji was admitted to Omandurar government hospital in Chennai. After the arrest, Balaji complained of chest discomfort, and his medical check-up was done. The ED believes that he is the “prime suspect” in the cash-for-jobs case and informed a local court that he “misused” his office for illegal gratification and “engineered” a job racket scam in the state transport undertakings during 2014–15 with purported bribes paid by candidates through his associates.

Balaji was sent to judicial custody until June 28. After an 18-hour interrogation and multiple searches across different parts of Chennai and Tamil Nadu, Balaji was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday. Balaji tried his level best to avoid arrest, but the ED was determined to cage him for further investigations. Calling him the “prime suspect” in the cash-for-jobs case, the federal probe agency also stated in its custody papers that alleged unaccounted cash deposits worth about Rs 1.60 crore were made in the bank accounts of Balaji and his wife.

The case is linked to a job-for-cash scam in the state’s transport department, which allegedly occurred during Balaji’s tenure as transport minister in the AIADMK regime from 2011–16. The case was booked in March 2021, on the eve of the Assembly elections, when Chennai police filed a chargesheet against Balaji and 46 others, which included senior retired and serving officers of various transport corporations. The charges related to a recruitment scam that shook the state in 2014–15.

Balaji, along with his brother R V Ashok Kumar, PA B Shanmugam, and a person identified as M Karthikeyan, “contrived” with the managing directors of all state transport undertakings (STU) and other officers of transport corporations to obtain “illegal gratification” from candidates to recruit them as drivers, conductors, junior assistants, junior engineers, and assistant engineers in the transport corporation (during 2014-15). The ED said that the alleged unaccounted cash deposits worth about Rs 1.60 crore were made in the bank accounts of Balaji and his wife.

In every state other than BJP, leaders were caught in the trap of the ED and CBI; they were raided and arrested; some see this arrest as a political vendetta. Every regional political party has faced such a situation. It has become a small price they pay for being in politics. Balaji’s medical reports show that he has three main arteries blocked and needs bypass surgery. There is an “escalation in targeting” of opposition leaders. Central agencies were first “weaponized” in J&K and later replicated in the rest of the country. The ED raids are not just limited to Tamil Nadu but have happened in Maharashtra and Karnataka as well.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPI general secretary D Raja, and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah slammed the BJP over Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji’s arrest. Kejriwal and Raja said opposition-ruled states were being targeted by central probe agencies like the CBI and ED. ED and CBI are not going after corrupt people anymore; all corrupt people are getting refuge in the BJP, and agencies attack those who are not part of the BJP.

D. Raja, meanwhile, pointed out that the raid took place a few days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed the BJP would win 25 Lok Sabha seats during a visit to Tamil Nadu. “After the Karnataka elections, the discontent of people against the BJP is visible, and the BJP has become desperate. That is why they are doing unconstitutional things. The BJP can try hard to harass their opponents, but there is no political scope for them in Tamil Nadu.

Shiv Sena ad controversy: "In a family, brothers fight," says BJP state chief Bawankule 11

Days after Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena came under fire after a front-page newspaper advertisement that featured Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, but not his deputy, Devendra Fadnavis, State BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Thursday said that in a family, brothers can also have differences and fights.

Downplaying the incident, Bawankule said, ” In a family, two brothers also fight. So, differences might occur. Now that the advertisement has come and everything is clear, I think we should close this matter,” said Bawankule.

A front-page advertisement issued by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena in newspapers across Maharashtra stoked a political controversy on Tuesday as it featured pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the chief minister, leaving out deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. The advertisement claimed that a survey had revealed that more people in the state preferred Shinde for the CM’s post than Fadnavis. Soon after the advertisement created waves in political circles, the BJP-Shiv Sena government has released an advertisement featuring both leaders.

On Tuesday, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar slammed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena over the advertisement featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. the BJP-Shiv Sena government has released an advertisement featuring both leaders.

He stated that the poster didn’t feature Shiv Sena’s stalwarts like Balasaheb Thackeray and Anand Dighe. “Till date, in my political career, I have not seen this kind of advertisement which I saw in today’s newspapers. PM Narendra Modi and CM Shinde’s photos were there in the advertisement,” Pawar had said.

He added, “They (Shiv Sena) say that they are the soldiers of Balasaheb Thackeray, whereas Balasaheb Thackeray’s and Anand Dighe’s photos were missing from the advertisement.” BJP member Praveen Darekar said that the Sena’s ad “was not right”, while Sanjay Raut of the Uddhav Sena alleged Shinde’s camp had forgotten Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray.

‘Stand with Trump’ becomes rallying cry as Republicans amplify attacks on US justice system

Moments after Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to federal charges that he hoarded classified documents and then conspired to obstruct an investigation about it, the Republicans in Congress had his back.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy dashed off a fundraising email decrying the “witch hunt” against the former president and urging donors to sign up and “stand with Trump.” The Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell steered clear of criticising the former president or assuring the nation justice will be impartial, refusing to engage in questions about the unprecedented indictment.

And at a public meeting in the Capitol basement, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene compared the case against Trump to the federal prosecution of people at the January 6, 2021 insurrection, suggesting in both instances it was the Justice Department, not the defendants, under scrutiny.

The mounting legal jeopardy Trump finds himself in has quickly become a political rallying cry for the Republicans, many of whom acknowledged they had not fully read the 49-page federal indictment but are rushing to stand by the indicted former president, adopting his grievances against the federal justice system as their own.

It’s an unparalleled example of how Trump has transformed the Republican Party that once embraced “law and order” but is now defending, justifying and explaining away the grave charges he faces with multiple counts of violating the Espionage Act involving some of the country’s most sensitive national security secrets.

At the same time, Trump is rewriting the job description of what it means to lead a major American political party. Making another run for the White House, Trump is attacking the bedrock system of US justice that is foundational to democracy and molding an emboldened generation of Republican members of Congress to follow along.

“Stand with Trump,” tweeted Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, the fourth-ranking House GOP leader.

“I will be standing right next to President Trump tonight in total support,” tweeted Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama before he dashed to join the former president at his private Bedminster golf club for a campaign event after the federal court hearing.

“I stand by him right now,” said Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., outside the Capitol. “Ten toes down.” Despite two impeachment trials, state charges of hush money payments to porn star, a pair of probes into Trump’s efforts to undo the 2020 election and now the deepening federal case over his classified documents, Trump has shown an exaggerated ability to not just withstand legal scrutiny but to thrive off it.

As Trump’s defenders in Congress see it, he will be rising politically, precisely because of all the investigations against him. Republicans in Congress are working strenuously to reframe the historic indictment of a former president as an unfair political persecution rather than stark federal charges of wrongdoing.

“I’ve been pretty clear on this all the way through: I think the country is very frustrated, when you don’t feel like there’s equal justice.” McCarthy told reporters at the Capitol.

“This president hasn’t even been out of office for four years, but you’re holding him to a standard you’ve never held anybody else to.” It’s an approach that echoed through the halls.

Republican Rep. Kat Cammack of Florida said the case smacks of a “two-tier” justice system, adding that constituents tell her they “never in a million years would have voted for Trump, but this is insane.” “A bogus investigation,” said Donalds.

“Political hit job,” said Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri, who said he did read the whole indictment.

Republican Sen. JD Vance of Ohio said Trump is merely the “latest victim” of the Justice Department. He announced he would be blocking all DOJ nominees unless the attorney general changes course.

“If Merrick Garland wants to use these officials to harass Joe Biden’s political opponents, we will grind his department to a halt,” Vance said in a statement.

Republicans also see the federal case against Trump as a winning political strategy — a way to motivate aggrieved voters to the polls in 2024 elections, when the House and one-third of the Senate will be up for another term alongside the presidential nominees.

House Republicans were fundraising off the indictment, and the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, Rep. Richard Hudson, joined Trump on the plane from a campaign rally in Georgia to one in North Carolina over the weekend where the congressman introduced the former president on stage.

“A lot of people are going to vote,” Trump told the Bedminster crowd later Wednesday evening. “They know what we’ve gone through.” The details of 37 counts against Trump in indictment are vivid. The prosecutors laid out explicit evidence how they allege Trump knowingly stored highly sensitive national security documents at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida and then schemed to provide false information to investigators who tried to retrieve the government papers.

Trump could face a potentially lengthy prison sentence, if convicted of the charges.

Some Republicans acknowledge that Trump’s hoarding of the documents — in dozens of boxes in the bathroom, on a ballroom stage and spilled in a storage room – was problematic. Prosecutors said the papers included material about nuclear programs, defence and weapons capabilities, among others, some of the most secret information the US government owns.

Sen. Marco Rubio, the Republican chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Trump should have never stored the documents at his home, but said he suggested there was no real harm done since Trump didn’t appear to give away the documents to China, Saudi Arabia or other countries.

Rubio was more worried the indictment of Trump will “release a fury” across a politically divided nation.

Few voices in Congress dared to publicly raise serious questions, concerns or criticism about Trump’s behavior.

“The real question is, why did he do it?” said Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, the only Republican senator who voted twice to convict Trump in the impeachment trials. “Why should the country go through all this angst and turmoil when all he had to do is turn in the documents when asked?” Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said of what she’s seen in the indictment, “it looks pretty damning to me.” About the same time Trump was pleading not guilty to the charges, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida was leading a panel discussion with Greene and others about the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol by a mob of pro-Trump supporters trying to challenge and overturn Biden’s election.

Greene opened her remarks saying it was “heavy on my heart that we’re doing this today.” She compared the two historic moments in US history — ”when President Trump was being arraigned all because of the weaponised government that has been weaponised against each of you.” Trump had encouraged the mob to go to the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and fight for his presidency as Congress was certifying the election won by Biden. Some 1,000 people have been charged by the Justice Department in the Capitol riot, including members of extremist groups convicted of sedition.

Many of those defendants were backing Trump’s claims of a stolen election. But the states certified the results, and experts and judges said the election wasn’t rigged – he just lost. Five people died in the siege of the Capitol, including Trump supporter Ashli Babbitt who was shot and killed by Capitol Police.

Greene and the others draw a through-line between the prosecutions of Jan. 6 attendees and the case against Trump as evidence of a “weaponisation” of the justice system.

“It all started on the day, on January 6, when we were just doing our constitutional duty to object” to Biden’s election, the congresswoman said.

Asked afterward if they were trying to rewrite January 6 history, Gaetz a top Trump ally said: “We’re trying to correct history.” Across the Capitol at his weekly press conference, McConnell, the Republican leader of the Senate, declined to use his position to take sides.

Questioned about Trump’s indictment he said: “I’m not going to start commenting on the various candidates we have for president.”

‘I’m gonna be 53 when the last ‘Avatar’ comes out”: Zoe Saldana on sequel delays

‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ actor Zoe Saldana has reacted to the delay of three upcoming sequels to ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’. Taking to her Instagram stories, the actress made a reference to the recently revealed news that the three scheduled sequels to ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ from last year have been postponed.

“Great! I’m gonna be 53 when the last avatar comes out,” Saldana, 44, jokingly wrote above the news headline, adding an emoji of a shocked face, reported People. “I was 27 when I shot the very first @avatar movie,” she added with a bespectacled disguised face emoji.

As per People, Disney, the distributor behind the hit sci-fi franchise, announced Tuesday that Avatar 3 will arrive in theaters Dec. 19, 2025; Avatar 4 on Dec. 21, 2029; and Avatar 5 on Dec. 19, 2031, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. Saldana has played Neytiri, a bow-and-arrow-wielding Na’vi warrior, and mother in James Cameron’s Oscar-winning ‘Avatar’, released in 2009 and is still reportedly the world’s No. 1 highest-grossing movie of all time (not adjusting for inflation). That first installment began filming in 2007.

If ‘Avatar 5’ will serve as the franchise’s finale and its purported 2031 release date hold, the entire on-screen series will span 22 years. As per People, following the news of the delays, producer Jon Landau tweeted that each film in the Avatar franchise “is an exciting but epic undertaking that takes time to bring to the quality level we as filmmakers strive for and audiences have come to expect. The team is hard at work and can’t wait to bring audiences back to Pandora in December 2025.”

Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully, the film’s protagonist, won’t be the narrator of subsequent tales, according to writer-director James Cameron, who also hinted at this while keeping production and story details under wraps. He said that Lo’ak, Jake’s teenage son who was first mentioned in The Way of Water, will serve as the narrator in Avatar 3 instead. Lo’ak is played by Britain Dalton. In a behind-the-scenes featurette for Avatar: The Way of Water, Saldana and Worthington discussed how much had changed in the years between filming the original Avatar and its sequel, including becoming parents — just like their on-screen characters, reported People.

“Something really special happened when we reunited for Avatar 2,” said Saldana, adding that the sequel’s “stakes are higher” because it’s centered on a Na’vi family. (Saldana shares twin sons Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio, 8, and son Zen Anton Hilario, 6, with husband Marco Perego-Saldana.) “Zoe and me were always just very close, and that gave us absolute freedom to bounce off each other and just enjoy the ride,” said Worthington.

Saldana also told PEOPLE how she prepared to play Neytiri again after years between filming Avatar and its sequel. “It did take a little more time for my body to assimilate, to return to some of the exercises and the practices,” she said. “I’m proud of the fact that [Cameron] has lost bets of whether or not I can hit a mark [with my archery]. I think the first time was a hundred bucks?”

Attempt to seek fresh public opinion on UCC shows Modi govt's desperation for continuing with its polarisation agenda: Cong 15

The Congress on Thursday said the Law Commission’s latest attempt to seek fresh public opinion on a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) represents the Narendra Modi government’s desperation for continuing with its agenda of polarisation and diversion from its failures.

In a statement, Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh said it is strange that the Law Commission is seeking a fresh reference when it acknowledges that its predecessor, the 21st Law Commission, had published a consultation paper on the subject in August 2018.

Ramesh said no reasons have been given by the Law Commission on why the subject is being revisited except for vague references to ”the relevance and importance of the subject and also, various court orders”.

”The real reason is that the 21st Law Commission after carrying out a detailed and comprehensive review of the subject observed that it is ‘neither necessary nor desirable at this stage’ to have a Uniform Civil Code.

”This latest attempt represents the Modi government’s desperation for a legitimate justification of its continuing agenda of polarisation and diversion from its glaring failures,” he said.

The Congress leader said in a press note on June 14, the 22nd Law Commission of India notified its intention to examine various aspects of a UCC.

This was being done, the press note clarified, on a reference sent by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Ramesh noted.

He also cited what the 21st Law Commission, appointed by the Modi government itself, had said in paragraph 1.15 of its 182-page ”Consultation Paper on Reform of Family Law” submitted on August 31, 2018.

”While diversity of Indian culture can and should be celebrated, specific groups or weaker sections of society must not be dis-privileged in the process. Resolution of this conflict does not mean abolition of all differences. This commission has therefore dealt with laws that are discriminatory rather than providing a uniform civil code, which is neither necessary nor desirable at this stage. Most countries are now moving towards recognition of difference and the mere existence of difference does not imply discrimination, but is indicative of a robust democracy,” Ramesh said, quoting from the report.

The former Union minister said the Law Commission has produced an enviable body of work over the decades on numerous issues of national importance.

”It should be mindful of that legacy and remember that the interests of the nation are distinct from the political ambitions of the BJP,” he said.

The Law Commission on Wednesday said it has decided to look at the need for a UCC afresh and seek the views of various stakeholders, including members of the public and religious organisations.

Earlier, the 21st Law Commission, the term of which ended in August 2018, had examined the issue and solicited the views of all stakeholders on two occasions on the politically sensitive matter of a UCC.

Shiv Sena ad controversy: Opposition dub it "power struggle within the coalition" 17

A full-page advertisement that appeared in major newspapers in the state on Tuesday cited a survey that showed Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ahead of Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis in popularity. It did not feature Fadnavis’s photo, while its tagline read “Modi in the country, Shinde in Maharashtra.”

Opposition leaders dubbed it a “political drama” and a “power struggle within the coalition,” and they raised a slew of questions, including why the survey was conducted, how many people took part, and how the calculation was done. How could they have only considered CM Eknath Shinde as the preferred candidate for Chief Minister of Maharashtra?

The advertisement in the newspaper mentioned that CM Eknath Shinde gained around 26% for the post of CM, while Dy CM gained around 23% for the post.

Uddhav-faction Shiv Sena took a jibe in their mouthpiece Saamana over the advertisement and said, “The Shinde group has become a slave of the rulers of Delhi. It has stooped so low that Balasaheb Thackeray’s picture was removed due to the fear of Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. How can such timid people call themselves the Shiv Sena and inheritors of Bal Thackeray’s legacy?”

“The Shinde-Fadnavis alliance is spreading a complete conspiracy,” UBT Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant told Afternoon Voice. “The important question here is: which agency did this survey, and is that agency authenticated? “If they are so popular in the state, why haven’t there been any BMC polls yet?”

“It is the lowest level of politics seen in the state,” said veteran Congress leader Ratnakar Mahajan. “The political campaign that has begun by these political parties and the current government of the state should showcase the details of the agency and the details of the survey, like methodology and what questions were asked, and a sample of the survey should be shared with the public, and if 26% are in favor of the Shinde government, then 74% are against it.”

When asked how they see political changes in the Shinde-Fadnavis government alliance after the state newspaper advertisement, NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto said, “they have become so hungry for power and position in the state, which has caused internal issues in the present government that could be a problem in the state.”

“People are creating political controversy unnecessarily because the advertisement and survey were done by an independent agency, and the percentage of the survey was shown to depict the current government’s strong alliance, and ministers of the state are working hard with a lot of efforts to ensure people give votes to PM Narendra Modi in the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls,” said Krishna Hegde, spokesperson of the Shiv Sena’s Shinde faction.
